2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

Coast Guard had an outstanding season last year as the

Bears fi nished 19-7 overall and 14-6 in the New England

Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). It

was the fi rst winning season since the 2007-’08 season.

The season did end on a bitter note as the Bears were

knocked out of the NEWMAC tournament in the fi rst

round by eventual champion sixth-seeded Springfi eld,

a team Coast Guard beat twice during the regular

season.

The Bears return eight players and three starters

including their top two scorers in junior guards Torie

Sutherland, a second-team All-conference selection last

season, along with Meghan Fornaro, who both started

all 26 games last season.

Sutherland led the Bears with 11.7 points and was

second with 6.7 rebounds and 33 three-pointers last

season. She also shot a team-high 37.4 percent from

the fl oor. Fornaro was second on the team in scoring

(10.8), assists (84), steals (48) and was third on the team

with 4.9 rebounds per game and 28 three-pointers.

“I expect Torie and Meghan to step up even more now

that they are juniors. A lot will fall on them and the

style of basketball that we play will be geared toward

them and I expect them to have big seasons for us,” said

Coast Guard head coach Alex Ivansheck in her third

season.

Senior Alexi Howland (7.1 ppg.), who averaged 25

minutes per game last season is also back and will

contribute in the back court.

Senior Leigha Steinbeck, who returns from an injury,

and sophomore Amanda Roy are also back and will

battle for time at the guard spots.

Senior Jamie Waterman (4.5 ppg./3.9 rpg.), who started

all 26 games last season, returns in the front court

along with senior Dani Knox (7.6 ppg.), who led the

Bears with 7.4 rebounds per game as she came off the

bench in all 26 games averaging 28 minutes per game

last year. Sophomore Jacque Tousignant also returns in

the front court.

The Bears welcome a trio of freshmen led by six-foot

forward Gill Gerton, who is expected to make an

immediate impact this season. She is joined in the

freshmen class by guards Jill Bray, who is expected to

see quality time in the back court, and Aimee Sinks,

who has been slowed by an injury in the preseason.

“We are going to be very fl exible with our lineups

this year, we have the ability to go big or go small

depending on the situation, something that we have

not been able to do in the past,” said Ivansheck

Coast Guard will open the season at the Skidmore

Invitational and take part in the Land of Magic Classic in

Daytona Beach, Florida over the holiday break

“We are looking to build on last year and advance

in the NEWMAC tournament this season. We have a

more diffi cult schedule with the additions of a pair of

tournaments which will surely help us down the road

with our NEWMAC portion of the schedule.”

REAR ADMIRAL SANDRA L. STOSZACADEMY SUPERINTENDENTFOURTH YEAR

Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz assumed the duties of the 40th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New

London, Connecticut, June 3, 2011. She reported to the Academy after serving as the Director of Reserve and Leadership at

Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. There she was responsible for developing policies to recruit, train and support

approximately 8,100 Coast Guard Reservists.

Rear Admiral Stosz is a surface operations offi cer with 12 years at sea, including command of two cutters – an icebreaking

tug on the Great Lakes and a medium endurance cutter that patrolled North Atlantic and Caribbean waters. She and her

crews executed many of the Coast Guard’s 11 missions such as drug and alien migrant interdiction, fi sheries enforcement,

search and rescue, polar and domestic icebreaking and ports and waterways security.

Between sea duty tours Rear Admiral Stosz specialized in personnel and resource management and program review. She

served tours of duty as Chief of Offi cer Assignments and as Program Reviewer and Acquisition Funds Coordinator for Coast

Guard major systems acquisitions, including the 225-foot buoy tenders and 87-foot coastal patrol boats. She broadened her

experience as the Secretary of Transportation’s military assistant and years later as the Commandant’s executive assistant.

She has served as Commanding Offi cer of the Coast Guard’s recruit training center in Cape May, New Jersey and as Director of

Coast Guard Enterprise Strategic Management and Doctrine where she was responsible for aligning enterprise level strategic

and management functions with the Commandant’s strategic intent.

Rear Admiral Stosz graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in Government.

She was awarded a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University’s J. L. Kellogg Graduate School

of Management in 1994. In 2000 she completed an executive fellowship in national security through the MIT Seminar XXI

program, and she earned a Master of National Security Strategy from the National War College in 2004. In 2009 she attended

the Navy’s Executive Business Course at University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler business school.

Rear Admiral Stosz’s personal awards include three Legion of Merit Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast

Guard Commendation Medals and two Coast Guard Achievement Medals.

TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFOURTH YEAR

Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its fi rst-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising eff ort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt ESPN 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000 annually.

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication eff orts.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

ALEX IVANSHECK HEAD COACH [email protected] SEASON

Alex Ivansheck is in her third season at the United States Coast Guard Academy after being named the head coach in June of 2012. In her fi rst season led the Bears back to the NEWMAC tournament for the fi rst time since the 2009/10 season.

She has increased the team’s win total in each of her fi rst two seasons at the helm posting 10 in 2012/13 and 19 in 2013/14 and enters this season with a career mark of 29-22. The ten victories posted during the 2012/13 season were the most since the 2007/08 team recorded 25 on their way to the ECAC New England Championship.

Ivansheck spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at Ithaca College where she helped the Bombers post a 116-50 record, including a 81-11 mark in Empire 8 games. Ithaca made three NCAA playoff appearances, won four conference regular-season titles and two postseason tournament championships and recorded the league’s fi rst 16-0 record ever in any sport during her time there.

She is no stranger to Southeastern Connecticut, growing up in Salem and graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 2000. While at NFA, she played for legendary coach Bill Scarlata and won a pair of Class LL state championships while the team qualifi ed for the ECC and state championship in each of her four seasons on the basketball team. Ivansheck was also a four-year member of the cross country team that participated in both the state and New England Championships for four consecutive seasons.

Prior to arriving at Ithaca, Ivansheck spent the 2005-06 season with the women’s basketball staff at William Smith, where she helped the Herons to a second round of the NCAA playoff s. William Smith fi nished 22-8 and won the Liberty League’s regular-season and championship tournament titles.

Ivansheck played at Ithaca from 2000 to 2005 (an injury sidelined her for all but fi ve games of her senior season; she received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA and played a fi fth season while pursuing a master’s degree). A point guard, she helped the Bombers to a record of 109-28 during her career, with NCAA playoff berths each season. Ithaca won Empire 8 titles in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In her career, Ivansheck scored 567 points and pulled down 309 rebounds. Her career totals of 333 assists and 253 steals are both fourth on the program’s all-time lists (she was third in both categories after fi nishing her career). She received honorable mention to the Empire 8 all-star team in 2002 and 2005.

She interned with the Women’s Sport Foundation as an undergraduate at Ithaca. Ivansheck earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management, with a minor in coaching, in 2004 and received a master’s degree in business administration in 2005 at Ithaca. Ivansheck will also serve as an instructor in the Academy’s Health and Physical Education program.

JESSICA FARLEYASSISTANT COACHFIRST SEASON

Jessica begins her fi rst season as a member of the Bears coaching staff .

She was a graduate assistant at her alma mater Ithaca for the 2012-’13 season as year in which the Bombers won a school-record 27 games, won a the conference championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.

Farley, who graduated with degree win Exercise Science and earned a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from Ithaca, was a three-year starting guard for the Bombers as the team won an Empire 8 championship while current Coast Guard head coach Alex Ivansheck was an assistant coach.

The Bombers had a then school-record 24 wins during her senior season while in her sophomore season, the team fi nished a perfect 16-0 in Empire 8 play for the fi rst time.

Farley was an honorable mention All-conference selection as a senior as she led the Bombers with 90 assists and 66 steals and fi nished among Ithaca’s career leaders in both categories (seventh with 246 assists and eighth with 194 steals) as well as in three-point baskets (ninth with 77).


SCOTT HAWKASSISTANT COACHFIRST SEASON

Scott begins his fi rst season as member of the Bears coaching staff bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience from all levels of basketball.

He was an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun for ten seasons (2003-2012) as the team made numerous playoff appearances and won a pair of Eastern Conference Championships.

Prior to coaching in the WNBA, Hawk won both a boys and girls basketball state championship as a head coach. He was head coach at Omaha Cathedral High in Nebraska from 1985-1990 winning a Class C state championship and earning Coach of the Year honors in 1986. Hawk was head girls basketball coach at Omaha Creighton Prep from 1990-2003 leading the team to a Class A state championship and earning Coach of the Year honors in 1994.

Hawk was also head girls basketball coach at Bellevue West High in Nebraska from 1999-2003 where he turned a team that had never had a winning record in 22 years to a team that went 20-2 and earned a spot in the state tournament semifi nals.

He is a graduate of University of Nebraska Omaha with a degree in Education before earning a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Lesley University.

CATHERINE LEWISASSISTANT COACHSECOND SEASON

Catherine is in her second season as a member of the Bears coaching staff .

She graduated from Ithaca in May with a degree in Athletic Training. She was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team which made three NCAA tournament appearances during her four years including a trip to the Sweet 16 last season.

Lewis started eight games for the Bombers last season and was the women’s basketball All-Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year honoree. She was part of three Empire 8 tournament championship teams during her days at Ithaca.

Catherine, who played for current Coast Guard head coach Alex Ivansheck for three seasons at Ithaca is a 2009 graduate of Wheeler High School in North Stonington, Conn. She was a three-time All-league selection, earning fi rst-team All-league honors during her senior season. She was a two-year captain and team MVP as both a junior and senior. Catherine was also a four-year member of the soccer team.

SHANNON NICKELSATHLETIC TRAINERTHIRD SEASON

Shannon is in her third season as an assistant athletic trainer at the Coast Guard Academy.

She is originally from Florida and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Fla. in 2010.

Following West Florida, she received a graduate student position at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. While getting her Master’s, Shannon worked with a nearby D3 college (Marietta College) and was the supervising athletic trainer for women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s indoor & outdoor track teams.

Also while in school she completed a thesis titled “Validation of Physical Activity as a Functional Outcome Measure Following a Concussion”.

Shannon received a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training in June of 2012.

She currently resides in Rocky Hill, Conn.

BRITTNEY ZIMMERMANSTUDENT ASSISTANT COACH

Brittney played two seasons at Delaware Valley College before enrolling at the Coast Guard Academy and played her fi nal season of college basketball last season .. had a career-high 29 points for Delaware Valley vs. Wilkes on 1/31/09 ... grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds vs. Penn State Brandywine on 11/29/08 ... started all 24 games for the Bears in the 2011-12 season and was second in scoring (10.1) and led the team with 71 assists and 34 three-point fi eld goals ... she tied her career-high of nine assists in a win over Mitchell on 11/21/11 ... missed all of the 2012-13 last season with an injury. A Goverenment major she is on the Deans List.

Alexi appeared in all 26 games last season and averaged 25 minutes per game while leading the team shooting 79.4 percent from the foul line (50-63) ... she scored a career-high 24 points at Merchant Marine during her freshman season and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds twice during that season. A Management major, she is a member of the Regimental Commanders List.
