SEASON PREVIEWSEASON PREVIEW

2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW

The Coast Guard women’s basketball team looks to improve on a season that saw them reach the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifi nals for the fi rst time since 2007-08 season and win 19 games for the second year in a row.

Fourth year head coach Alex Ivansheck has built a strong program having winning seasons in back to back years for the fi rst time since 2001-02 and 2002-03 years.

This year’s team is led by the experienced and talented senior duo of Meghan Fornaro and Torie Sutherland.

Fornaro, who was fi rst team All-NEWMAC last season, led the team with 16.6 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. Fornaro is 37 points away from becoming the seventh player to score 1,000 points in Coast Guard women’s basketball history. She is in the top ten in four statistical categories at the Coast Guard: ninth in points (963), eighth in assists (219), eighth in steals (157), and ninth in 3-pointers (107).

Sutherland, who was second team All-NEWMAC for the second time in her career last season, was fi rst in rebounds with 8.6 boards which was also fi fth in the NEWMAC and second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game.

“Torie and Meghan have had a lot of experience over the past three years, so we will be counting on them on the court this season,” said Ivansheck. “Between the two of them, I will look to them to create plays this season as they have played together the longest on the team. “

In the junior class, Amanda Roy returns looking to add depth at the guard position and be a valuable shooter in reserve for the Bears. Joining the team this season is Bekah Muller. Through the preseason Muller has been a force on the boards for Coast Guard and will be a strong defensive presence for the Bears this year.

In the sophomore class Gill Gerton, Jill Bray, and Michelle Hernandez return to the team tallying valuable minutes in their fi rst year at the Academy. Gerton led the team in blocked shots with 32 and was

tied for second on the team with 5.3 rebounds per game. Gill had three double doubles last season and in the last four games of the season she scored in double fi gures.

Bray saw time in 22 games last season and will be another skilled shooter for the Bears. Hernandez adds depth at the guard position and will come off the bench to be an asset on defense and push the pace of the Coast Guard off ense.

Joining the team for her fi rst year is sophomore Amanda Klawinski. She is a team fi rst player who has shown a strong work ethic this preseason.

Ivansheck is bringing in her largest freshman class this season with fi ve athletes joining the program: Micaela Martinelli, Kristina Bynum, Jayla Joyner, Shelby Threlkeld, and Johanna Moolenaar. All fi ve players will look to make an immediate impact on the court this season.

The Bears open up their season fi nishing out the fi rst semester on the road with early season NEWMAC games against Clark, Smith and Wheaton. The team will then travel to play in a tournament in Puerto Rico over the holiday break with games against Simpson and Gustavus Adolphus before they return to school in January for the heart of their conference schedule.

“We have four team values we are stressing this season,” commented Coach Ivansheck. “Selfl essness, discipline, trust, and passion, and this does not only pertain to the court. I want the players to take these values and apply them to their entire life. The team is defi nitely coming together around these values, and I am looking forward to this season.”

The last two seasons Coast Guard has won a combined 38 games and will look to add to that success this season with a blend of veteran leadership and talented youth. The Bears open up their season on the road against Westfi eld State at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on November 14th at 2:00 pm.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFIFTH YEAR

Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fi fth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas.

In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, he oversaw a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization, the CGA Bear Club, as an annual giving entity to fund athletics “margin of excellence” projects and initiatives.

Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department now conducts an annual women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium), which features prominent national leaders in women’s athletics for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England.

He has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships, established a Faculty Affi liate program, began the annual Celebrate New London football game initiative and was the driving force in the men’s basketball teams appearance in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPNU last season.

Prior to the Academy Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball

programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation during the 1998-99 academic year.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982..

ALEX IVANSHECK HEAD COACH [email protected] SEASON

Alex Ivansheck is in her fourth season at the United States Coast Guard Academy after being named the head coach in June of 2012. In her fi rst season led the Bears back to the NEWMAC tournament for the fi rst time since the 2009/10 season.

She has increased the team’s win total in each of her fi rst two seasons at the helm posting 10 in 2012/13 and 19 in 2013/14 and enters this season with a career mark of 29-22. The ten victories posted during the 2012/13 season were the most since the 2007/08 team recorded 25 on their way to the ECAC New England Championship.

Ivansheck spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at Ithaca College where she helped the Bombers post a 116-50 record, including a 81-11 mark in Empire 8 games. Ithaca made three NCAA playoff appearances, won four conference regular-season titles and two postseason tournament championships and recorded the league’s fi rst 16-0 record ever in any sport during her time there.

She is no stranger to Southeastern Connecticut, growing up in Salem and graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 2000. While at NFA, she played for legendary coach Bill Scarlata and won a pair of Class LL state championships while the team qualifi ed for the ECC and state championship in each of her four seasons on the basketball team. Ivansheck was also a four-year member of the cross country team that participated in both the state and New England Championships for four consecutive seasons.

Prior to arriving at Ithaca, Ivansheck spent the 2005-06 season with the women’s basketball staff at William Smith, where she helped the Herons to a second round of the NCAA playoff s. William Smith fi nished 22-8 and won the Liberty League’s regular-season and championship tournament titles.

Ivansheck played at Ithaca from 2000 to 2005 (an injury sidelined her for all but fi ve games of her senior season; she received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA and played a fi fth season while pursuing a master’s degree). A point guard, she helped the Bombers to a record of 109-28 during her career, with NCAA playoff berths each season. Ithaca won Empire 8 titles in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In her career, Ivansheck scored 567 points and pulled down 309 rebounds. Her career totals of 333 assists and 253 steals are both fourth on the program’s all-time lists (she was third in both categories after fi nishing her career). She received honorable mention to the Empire 8 all-star team in 2002 and 2005.

She interned with the Women’s Sport Foundation as an undergraduate at Ithaca. Ivansheck earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management, with a minor in coaching, in 2004 and received a master’s degree in business administration in 2005 at Ithaca. Ivansheck will also serve as an instructor in the Academy’s Health and Physical Education program.
