Mr Robert Wells is Deputy CEO of the Sax Institute. The Sax Institute is funded by the NSW Ministry of Health to strengthen public health and health services research and increase its impact on policy. Robert works with senior levels of government and the NGO sector to build links between policy development and health system improvements and research evidence. He oversees the management and development of research assets including the 45 and Up Study and the SecureUnifiedResearchEnvironment(SURE),whichprovides capacity for researchers to access linked patient data for research purposes.

Mr David Butt was appointed CEO of the National Mental Health Commission in January 2014. David has 30 years of experience in the health system, much of it at CEO and Executive level. David was Deputy Secretary of the Australian Department of Health from August 2011, head of Rural and Regional HealthAustralia,andtheCommonwealth’sfirstChiefAlliedHealthOfficer.Thisfollowed15yearsasCEOof three major health system organisations: Chief Executive of Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Health and Community Care, National CEO of Little Company of Mary Health Care (the Calvary group – one of Australia’slargestnotforprofithospitalsandhealthservices providers, operating a range of public and private hospitals, aged care facilities and home care), and CEO of the Australian General Practice Network. Prior to this David worked as an executive in a number of positions in Queensland Health, including as Executive Director of Policy and Planning and for a brief time as Regional Director of Peninsula and Torres Strait health region. David is also a former Chair of the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council (AHMAC).

Dr Rosemary Korda is a Fellow at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health. She is an epidemiologist with extensive experience in the analysis of large complex data sets, including longitudinal survey data and linked administrative health data. Current research includes studies on obesity and the risk of and costs of hospitalisation; inequalities in health and healthcare; and time scarcity and health. In addition to her research, she has a major role in curriculum development and teaching in post-graduate epidemiology and biostatistics courses at the ANU. She is currently a member of the Medical Services Advisory Committee Evaluation Sub-Committee of the Commonwealth Department of Health Ageing, the National Heart Foundation Health Equity Advisory Group and the ACT Medicare Local Population Health Reference Group.

Speakers

Associate Professor Freddy Sitas joined Cancer Council NSW in 2003 as Director of Cancer Research Division. Previously, Freddy headed the South African National Cancer Registry, and was awarded a Readership in Epidemiology by the University of the Witwatersrand. Freddy was appointed Director of the Cancer Research Division at Cancer Council NSW in 2003. The Division focuses on local and international causes and consequences of a cancer diagnosis. He holds Associate Professor positions at the Schools of Public Health at the Universities of Sydney and of New South Wales. His interests include setting up large epidemiological infrastructure studies, such as the national study on smoking on the South African deathcertificateandtheJohannesburgCancerCaseControl Study. He is the Principal Investigator of the Cancer, Lifestyle and Evaluation of Risk (CLEAR) study, and one of the founding members of the 45 and Up Study.Hehasascientificinterestintheroleinfectionsand tobacco play in causing cancer, with special projects on skin, cervical and oesophageal cancer. In September 2013, he was awarded the AG Oettlé Memorial Medal for his contribution to cancer research.

Professor Emily BanksistheScientificDirectorofthe Sax Institute’s 45 and Up Study and a Professor at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University. Emily is a medically trained epidemiologist and her work to date has focused on large scale cohort studies (including the UK Million Women Study), women’s health, healthy ageing and pharmacoepidemiology. She is a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine and Chair of the Advisory Committee on the Safety of Medicines.

Mr Mark Bartlett is an epidemiologist with experience in infectious diseases and the design and establishment of large scale studies. Since 2012, Mark has been based at the Sax Institute as an epidemiologist managing the Analysis for Policy program, aimed at assisting policyagenciestodefineandimplementresearchstudies using the 45 and Up Study to inform priority policy questions. Mark’s previous posts include as a senior pharmacoepidemiologist and team leader with the National Prescribing Service (NPS: MedicineWise) where he was responsible for a team of statisticians analysing PBS and MBS data for prescribing and referral trends and associations, as well as senior management positions in local and state-wide public health services, including Director of two NSW public health units; and Surveillance Manager of the Communicable Diseases Branch in the NSW Department of Health.
