Once again it is my pleasure to share a few

words about the continuing growth and suc-

cess of the Nordic Heritage Museum. Each year

we move closer to realizing our goal of a new

facility. It is through hard work and the enduring

Nordic spirit that we will succeed.

The Museum’s achievements can only be attrib-

uted to the wonderful support of our members,

volunteers, trustees, and staff. This past year we

have successfully exceeded our budgetary goals,

increased our membership and attendance, and

enhanced the quality of our exhibitions and

programs. We also saw another record year for

our special events.

Our exhibitions received substantial press cover-

age and critical acclaim, including encouraging

reviews of Danish Modern: Design for Living,

Tod Gangler’s The Color of Time, and Imaging

the Arctic in the Seattle Times. Gray Magazine

highlighted Danish Modern. KING 5’s Evening

Magazine aired a feature on Tod Gangler and

The Color of Time, and fi lmed a feature about

Viking Days at the Museum. The Museum was

featured in Where Magazine, on Nancy Guppy’s

ArtZone, and in the Ballard News-Tribune,

among much more print, broadcast, radio, and

online coverage. With each success, we continue

to build on the inevitability of a new home.

The Capital Campaign continues to be a major

focus of the Board’s efforts. We have only $16

million of $45 million left to raise, allowing us

to stay on schedule to achieve our goal of a

new Museum on Market Street. I do want to

share with you, however, a sense of urgency to

receive these funds. As you know, the Museum

is currently housed in a building owned by the

Seattle Public Schools. The Seattle School Board

has notifi ed us that they want the building

back so that they can remodel and again open

it as a school. Staff are currently in negotiations

regarding a date, but as of now, the School

Board is talking about the middle of 2017.

So as not to delay our construction plans it is

very important that we fi nalize our pledges.

We need to secure $12 million by end of this

year and fi nish 2016 with $4 million more,

or the Museum will be left without a home. I

know that we are all anticipating the day that

we can open our new doors. This will require

those who have not yet made a contribution,

or pledge, to please come forward—and be

generous.

The Nordic Heritage Museum is a critically im-

portant cultural organization in our community,

and it is only with your continued support that

we will survive. I personally thank each and ev-

ery one of you who have already made a gift to

the campaign, and look forward to sharing my

gratitude with those of you who will be making

a gift in the coming year.

From the Treasurer

Hans Aarhus

The Museum continued to expand its operations

in 2014, as we continue to look forward to a

new facility on Market Street. The Museum grew

its operational revenue from $1.60M in 2013 to

$1.72M in 2014, and actual net income outper-

formed projections by an impressive $105.5K.

Our Auktion and Yulefest generated record num-

bers in attendance and revenue, outperforming

2013 net revenues by $44K and $15K, respec-

tively. Total special event income totaled $508K

in 2014. Revenue from program fees totaled

$137.7K, outperforming last year by $77K.

Earned revenue from program fees, facility and

rental income, Museum Store sales, admissions,

interest, and membership fees totaled $815.9K,

approximately 47% of a total income. Contrib-

uted revenue from donations, grants, and special

events totaled $907.4K, 53% of total income.

The year saw several substantial gifts to the Muse-

um Capital Campaign, including a $1 million gift

from Kaare and Sigrunn Ness, $250,000 from Su-

san and Jon Hanson, a $250,000 pledge from Earl

and Denise Ecklund, $100,000 from Patricia and

Robert Charlson, $50,000 from the Albert Victor

Ravenholt Fund, $25,000 from Egon and Laina

Molbak, $15,000 from Maria Staaf and William

Jones, and a $10,000 pledge from Tor and Ingrid

Tollessen. A special thanks goes out to Allan and

Inger Osberg who, in addition to their previous

gifts, created a matching fund of $1 million. We

have already received over $400,000 in matching

gifts from donors who took the challenge.

The hard work and fi scal diligence of our staff and

volunteers continues to yield positive, responsible

fi nancial results, and the Museum closed 2014

with a cash position of $3.733M.

The Museum enters 2015 in a strong position as

we look to an ambitious year of programming

for the current facility and fundraising for our

new home on Market Street.

2014 was another successful year at the Nordic

Heritage Museum. Thanks to our core base of

members, our hardworking Board, our enthusi-

astic volunteers, and our tireless staff, we once

again presented diverse exhibitions, high-quality

programming, and fantastic mission-driven

events. Our institutional reach continued to ex-

pand, and our fi nancial performance kept us on

track to move into our new home in 2018.

This year we hosted a variety of exhibitions,

beginning with Pull, Twist, Blow—Transform-

ing the Kingdom of Glass, which showcased

contemporary glass art in Sweden, followed by

Danish Modern: Design for Living, which

highlighted modern furniture and housewares

designed in Denmark after World War II. We were

thrilled to be able to explore the changes in our

own neighborhood through the photography of

Tod Gangler in The color of Time: Ballard from

Dusk to Dawn, and we fi nished the year with

Imaging the Arctic: communicating climate

science through Art, an interdisciplinary exhibit

exploring the impact of climate change on West

Greenland’s ecology and culture.

One of our most successful events this year was

October’s Nordic Knitting conference. We also

celebrated the fi fth year of our Nordic Lights

Film Festival, which featured award-winning

fi lms from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and

Sweden. The 2014 Northern Lights Auktion

was a huge success, from both a fi nancial and

guest experience perspective. Our annual Viking

Days and Yulefest weekends were enjoyed by

thousands.

The Museum received tremendous fi nancial sup-

port from our members and patrons, and also

benefi ted from the generosity of a number of

funders, partner organizations, and foundations.

Special thanks to Scan|Design Foundation by Inger

& Jens Bruun, Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Founda-

tion, 4 Culture, ArtsFund, Seattle Offi ce of Arts

& Culture, and Washington Humanities for their

continuous support.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank

the Museum Board of Trustees, our donors, vol-

unteers, and staff for their tremendous support of

this organization. As we look ahead to 2015, an

exciting variety of programs and exhibitions are in

development, and as always I look forward to see-

ing you here at the Nordic Heritage Museum.

Visiting Exhibitions & Accompanying Programs

Visiting exhibitions in 2014 at the Nordic Heri-

tage Museum furthered the Museum’s mission

to share the richness and diversity of Nordic and

Nordic-American art, history, and culture.

Pull, Twist, Blow – Transforming the King-

dom of Glass (12/13/2013–04/26/2014),

organized by the Glass Factory in Boda, Sweden,

showcased contemporary glass art in Sweden

and how young, innovative artists are address-

ing the new potential in glass throughout the

Nordic region. Each of these young artists was

invited to connect themselves with the history

of the Kingdom of Glass by selecting objects

from the Glass Factory’s large glass collection as

a reference in relation to their own work. These

inspiration pieces were displayed alongside the

contemporary pieces.

Pull, Twist, Blow provided several program-

ing opportunities among them a lecture with

participating artist Ingalena Klenell and a lecture

with Walt Liebermann followed by a traditional

hyttsill (hot shop herring) meal.

Danish Modern: Design for Living

(05/16/2014–08/31/2014) highlighted modern fur-

niture and housewares designed in Denmark after

World War II. The exhibition explored the inspira-

tion behind these now classic designs, and their

introduction to mid-century American consumers.

The exhibition was organized by the Museum of

Danish America, Elk Horn, Iowa. To complement

the exhibition, Curatorial staff put together a

display of mid-century objects from the Museum’s

permanent collection, representing modern design

from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Danish Modern: Design for Living generated

many successful tours and programs. In partner-

ship with PechaKucha Seattle, the Museum host-

ed over one hundred people at an event called

PechaKucha: Living Loving Nordic Design.

Using PechaKucha’s trademark 20 slides x 20 sec-

onds format, the event brought together a wide

array of presenters who examined Nordic design.

Among the speakers were Peter Cohen, Dane F.

Jensen, Vicky Rova Mueller, and Rich Franko.

A fourth annual PechaKucha is planned for

April 16, 2015.

Another successful partnership was a Doco-

momo WEWA night at the Museum. Together

NorDIcHErITAGEMusEuM

with Docomoma WEWA (Documentation and

Conservation of the Modern Movement in West-

ern Washington) and the design store Inform

Interiors participants were presented short talks,

exclusive Danish furniture and a chance to view

the exhibit.

The color of Time: Ballard from Dusk

to Dawn, Photographs by Tod Gangler

(09/19/2014–11/09/2014) presented photog-

rapher Tod Gangler’s newest body of work.

Wandering through Ballard from dusk to dawn,

Gangler has been collecting views and visions of

Ballard as it appears in the 21st century, bring-

ing these images to light through 19th century

techniques. Many of the places pictured in the

photographs had already disappeared by the

time the exhibition opened, gone in the wake of

Seattle’s expansion and Ballard’s building boom.

A community-building event in conjunction

with Tod Gangler’s exhibit Color of Time drew 125

people to an evening with local artists, musicians,

urban farmers, distillers and more. The event

included short talks, food, demonstrators, music,

and a special viewing of the exhibit led by Gan-

gler. A lecture by Tod Gangler on the history of

photography also accompanied the exhibit and

was well received.

Home sweet Home (09/12/2014–09/30/2014)

complimented The Color of Time exhibition. This

art installation created by French artist Laurence

Landois, was inspired by the story of Edith Mace-

fi eld, who famously turned down an offer of $1

million to sell her home in Ballard to make way

for commercial development.

odin’s Eye (10/10/2014–11/19/2014) show-

cased the work of eight artists, both Icelandic

and American, all exploring themes from Norse

mythology. Each artist was inspired by the leg-

ends of the Norse gods and goddesses, and their

6

dramatic, humorous, and often bizarre tales.

Artists included were Pandora Andre Beatty, In-

gibjörg Birgisdóttir, Kristin Ragna Gunnarsdottir,

Gunnella, Sindri Már Sigfússon, Michael Linton

Simpson, Derek Weisberg, and Lulu Yee.

Imaging the Arctic: communicating climate

science through Art (12/12/2014–02/22/2015),

an interdisciplinary exhibit, explored the impact

of climate change on West Greenland’s ecology

and culture through the work of three women:

marine mammal biologist Dr. Kristin Laidre,

expeditionary artist Maria Coryell-Martin, and

Finnish photographer Tiina Itkonen. The exhibit

is centered around the impact of climate change

in the Arctic and sea ice loss on narwhals and

polar bears. These iconic species of the Arctic are

highly adapted to the extreme polar environ-

ment, and are also an integral part of Greenlan-

dic culture as subsistence resources.

Permanent ExhibitionsUpgrades to The Dream of America exhibition

were completed in early March, thanks to a grant

from Scan | Design Foundation. This was the fi rst

time that the exhibition had been updated since it

was installed in 1986. Throughout the exhibition,

text and storyline were edited and streamlined

and photographs and artifacts from the Muse-

um’s collection were added to highlight personal

stories. Faded and damaged photographs and

labels were replaced, and there were improve-

ments to the lighting. A small theater area was

added where visitors can watch excerpts from the

fi lm The Letter from America.

In the Fishing Gallery, two new video displays

showcase historical footage of commercial

fi shing practices, offering visitors a chance to

experience the sights and sounds of the halibut,

salmon, and king crab industries. Special thanks

to Einar Pedersen for generously supporting this

project produced by John Sabella.

Programs in 2014

The Museum offered a diverse range of educa-

tion opportunities and programs in 2014. These

included children’s and Youth programs,

craft school, Adult Education and Public

Programs, docent led exhibition tours, film

screenings, concerts, lectures, book talks, and

collections-related work.

Children’s and Youth ProgramsIn 2014, more than 3,600 children participated

in educational programming offered by the

Museum. The school tour program, which leads

groups on guided tours of the Dream of America

exhibit, as well as accommodating self-guided

school groups, brought in 1,463 children to the

Museum on 65 tours. The four outreach trunks

(Immigrants, Nordic Folk Art, Trolls/Norse Gods,

and Vikings) were used by over 800 children

throughout greater Seattle.

Special programs for children and families served

another 1,345 children. These programs included

Viking Days and Yulefest where children’s craft

projects, visits with Santa, Nordic folk music, and

dancing were available. The LEGo workshop

was well-attended, as was the annual Pippi

Longstocking pancake breakfast, syttende

Mai, the Museum’s summer camp program,

and a return of the popular Moomin Mania.

Workshops also took place directly related to

temporary exhibitions at the Museum. Another

500 people were exposed to the Museum at the

Bellevue Arts Museum Family Day/Cultures of

the World in January.

The Nordic stories monthly preschool reading

program continued to be a great success in its

seventh year, with an attendance of 208 children

and 154 adults. The local children’s Scandinavian

dance group Barneleikarringen continued to

practice at the Museum in 2014, performed at

several Museum events. The program expanded

its offering last year by developing a new music

component.

Craft School and Adult Education Programs

craft school had a successful year. Attendees

took part in classes on woodcarving, rosemaling,

cooking, embroidery, glass art, caring for heir-

loom photographs, mead-making, beer tasting

and Nordic drinking songs, and woven Christmas

hearts.

The Nordic Knitting conference also was larger

and more successful than ever before. Over 400

people came to the event, which featured Nor-

wegian sensations Arne and Carlos as headliners

leading a world-class team of knitting and spin-

ning teachers: Susanna Hansson, Judith MacKen-

zie, Mary Jane Mucklestone, Laura Ricketts, Cirilia

Rose, and Dianna Walla. Attendees took part in

over 30 classes and workshops; a silent auction; a

happy hour; and a banquet with keynote address.

A group of fi ve vendors joined the Museum Store

to provide a “marketplace” for attendees.

The Nordic American Voices oral history

project celebrated its fi ve-year anniversary and

completed its 400th interview. Voices of Ballard

and Beyond, the book produced by NAV, contin-

ues to be a top item in the museum shop, and

the program’s award-winning documentary on

World War II in Norway and Denmark went into

its second printing.

Public ProgramsIn 2014, more than 2500 people attended public

programs offered by the Museum. Tours and

lectures with visiting artists were among the

successful programming accompanying exhibi-

tions. Additionally, the Museum hosted four book

talks by authors of recent publications on Nordic

culture and history. Highlights included Jim Cole,

who presented his impressive book Drawing on

Our History. Co-produced by the Museum, Cole’s

drawings and essays make up this beautiful book

about boats and ships.

In January, the Museum presented the fi fth

annual Nordic Lights Film Festival, a partner-

ship between the Museum, the fi ve Nordic fi lm

institutes, and the Seattle International Film

Festival (SIFF). Three days of feature, short and

documentary fi lms from all the Nordic countries

drew record crowds. Opening night featured a

fi lm from Greenland, Inuk. The director and cast

were present for the screening and participated

in a Q&A after the screening. Producer Pancho

Kohner attended the sold out screening of his

Norwegian fi lm, Victoria. Over the three-day

festival 728 people attended.

soup and cinema continues to grow. The pro-

gram, which includes a soup lunch and Nordic

movie at lunchtime, drew 472 people over the

year, a 40% increase over last year’s attendance.

Other movie screenings included the documen-

tary on Anders Zorn which was attended by the

movies director and producer Joshua V. Hassel.

In addition to the very popular Mostly Nordic

chamber Music series, the Museum presented

two concerts. Norwegian musicians Skogen Säll-

ström and Knut Erik Jensen performed a concert

Arctic Memoirs. The Novus Project, a consortium

of musicians comprised of members of Seattle

Symphony, members of the Pacifi c Northwest Bal-

let orchestras, and other talented local musicians,

played works by Norwegian composer, Edvard

Grieg and Danish composer, Carl Nielsen.

CollectionsThe collections department was busy this last

year, working to improve the focus of our

permanent collection and library. Working with

our many exceptionally dedicated volunteers,

we were able to hone the library collection and

improve access to books and other research

material. During calendar year 2014, the Museum

acquired 531 objects. The cataloging of these

new acquisitions is almost complete. We have

also made a great deal of headway on document-

ing a backlog of items from years past. While all

this behind the scenes activity was going on, we

also fi elded 102 research requests throughout the

year—the Gordon Tracie Library continues to

be a wonderful resource for scholars of folk music

and dance, and the archives, fi ne art, and 3-D col-

lections were all utilized. The Nordic American

Voices oral History Program has continued its

important work toward recording the personal

and compelling stories of Nordic Americans in our

community. Since 2009, the program has cap-

tured 442 interviews. These interviews represent

excellent source material that will be valued for

years to come.

Development in 2014

The Museum’s fundraising efforts continued to

see strong support and good results in 2014.

Whether you are a member of the Museum,

a Nordic Legacy Circle member, an Annual

Campaign donor, Capital Campaign supporter,

attendee at a special event or program, your

generosity truly makes a difference at the Nordic

Heritage Museum. Thank you!

2014 saw an increase in special event, general

membership, and grant revenue, but a drop in

gifts to the Annual Fund. Clearly the focus on

Capital Campaign donations explains that dip.

Fundraising efforts for the Capital Campaign

received a boost from Allan and Inger Osberg’s

generous one million dollar match pool, but

much work remains to complete the $45 million

project, with almost $29 million raised to date.

If you are waiting until a critical moment to

make a gift, the time is now. Please contact Jan

Woldseth Colbrese, at 206.789.5707 ext. 39 to

make your contribution.

development

Special Events2014 also saw record attendance, revenue, and

sponsorship at our fundraising events—thanks

to the efforts of volunteers and staff. Highlights

included a very profi table Northern Lights

Auktion in the spring, the addition of run

Like a Viking 5K race to Viking Days, and the

introduction of an outdoor tent to Yulefest in

the winter. These events not only contributed

to general operations, but also broadened the

Museum’s audience.

At the 29th Annual Northern Lights Auk-

tion, the Nordic Heritage Museum was host to

a sell-out event. Held Saturday, May 10th at the

Seattle Grand Hyatt, the Auktion was the cul-

mination of months of planning by the Auktion

Committee, led by Co-Chairs Donna Pederson

and Linda Christenson. During the champagne

reception, attendees bid on a wide array of

silent auction lots including hand-crafted

furniture, travel packages, wine, and Nordic

spirits.

Guests enjoyed a four-course dinner during the

live auction, which featured get-away packages,

themed dinners, and even a safari in Africa.

Highlights for the evening included a tribute

to Einar and Emma Pedersen and a successful

showing of paddles raised for our Annual Fund-

A-Need. Finally, new and increased sponsorship

not only helped the Auktion exceed its goal but

also strengthened the Museum’s relationships

with local and national businesses.

The 32nd Annual Viking Days featured the

crowd-pleasing Viking Encampment, tradi-

tional music on three stages, Swedish Pancake

Breakfast, Viking Grill, Valhalla Beer Garden, and

Nordic Food Hearths. Saturday morning also fea-

tured for the fi rst time, the run Like A Viking

5K. The run provides opportunities to create

new relationships as well as increase awareness

of the Museum. Over the course of the weekend

of August 16 and 17, attendees enjoyed demon-

At the 40th Annual Yulefest held November 22

and 23, a large tent was erected in the parking

lot allowing additional space for patrons, ad-

ditional vendors, a new café, and an expanded

Bodega bar. A record number of attendees got

an early start on their holiday shopping, patron-

izing of local and regional merchants and stop-

ping for lunch at the Nordic Café or for a snack

at the Kaffestuga on their way to visit Santa.

Music also fi lled the festival, with performers,

on three stages. Overall the event saw increases

in revenue, and set a new attendance record by

attracting approximately 8,000 people.

with a presentation by Heather Burpee, from the

UW’s Department of Architecture, on Sustainable

Architecture and potential green solutions for

our new building. The President’s Club members

were invited to a special preview with Finnish

photographer Tiina Itkonen, expeditionary artist

Maria Coryell-Martin, and marine mammal biolo-

gist Dr. Kristin Laidre and were able to discuss

with them their artistic and scientifi c work in

Greenland for the exhibit Imaging the Arctic:

Communicating Climate Science through Art.

For more information about becoming a Member

at the Museum or to give the gift of member-

ship, contact Kiersten Bowers at 206.789.5707

ext. 24 or [email protected] for more

information about the President’s Club Circles

contact Katy Ahrens at 206.789.5707 ext. 33 or

[email protected].

Members of the President’s Club Gold Circle, Silver

Circle, and Bronze Circle are listed on page 15.

Nordic Legacy CircleThe members of the Nordic Legacy Circle have

indicated to the organization that the Museum

has been included in their estate planning, and

we thank them for their generous intentions.

Making a planned gift to the Nordic Heritage

Museum ensures that the Museum will thrive

well into the future. Members of the Nordic

Legacy Circle took part in the President’s Club

2014 luncheon and summer party.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the

Nordic Legacy Circle there are a number of ways

to include the Museum in your estate plans.

Most commonly planned gifts are made through

a bequest, which may include cash, securities,

and real estate or retirement plan distributions

and life insurance proceeds. Any donation or

planned gift you make to the Museum may

remain anonymous if you prefer.

For more information about planned giving or your

intent to include the Museum in your estate plan-

ning, call Jan Woldseth Colbrese at 206.789.5707

ext. 39 or email [email protected].

Volunteers

of the Volunteer Program for our existing volun-

teers. Volunteers took advantage of numerous

opportunities throughout the year to enhance

their engagement with the Museum, demon-

strate leadership, and build community. Current

volunteers wrote articles and were featured in

our volunteer newsletter, the Viking Bugle. Eight

volunteers completed the Docent Training Pro-

gram this fall and have all have begun to share

their new skills by leading tours of our exhibits.

The following distinguished volunteers were hon-

ored with the Director’s Award at our spring Vol-

unteer Appreciation Dinner and Awards Ceremo-

ny: Marianne Kolden and Anne Willott, Michelle

Eastman, Chris Hardy, Barbara Jeniker, Ashley Rus-

sell and Rich Johnson. Ron Hornung was awarded

Volunteer of the Year for his continuing leadership

and dedication on the Thursday Crew.

volunteers

For nearly 35 years volunteers have been the

heart and soul of the Nordic Heritage Museum,

and they continue to play a vital role in the

Museum’s success. Over 400 volunteers sup-

port every area of the Museum. They provide

meaningful experiences for visitors, offer invalu-

able support for our major fundraising events,

capture and share the most compelling stories in

our community, serve on advisory committees,

keep our building safe and operational, and

assist staff members in every department. Their

contributions of time and exceptional talents

ensure that the Museum continues to operate

smoothly and effi ciently, and their support and

dedication enable us to fulfi ll our mission of

sharing the Nordic spirit.

In 2014 we grew our Volunteer Program

signifi cantly, adding 52 new volunteers to our

volunteer corps, including 11 Visitor Service vol-

unteers, 10 new teen volunteers, and 29 general

events volunteers. We also welcomed over 14

interns, who made valuable contributions in

the Collections, Development, Marketing, and

Operations Departments. Overall we saw a 10%

increase in volunteers recruited for our festivals.

We also worked towards improving the quality
