Thisannualreportisentitled,“LeadingtheCharge.”Itfocussesontheyearthatwas2014:andwhatayearitwasforCanada’sAngusproducersandCanadiancattlemen!Afterstickingwiththebeefbusinessformanyyears,throughthickandthin,yourcommitmentandhardworkisfinallypayingoffinexceptionalways;inwaysthatwecouldnothavedreamedof.Thereissomuchoptimismintheindustrythatitiselectrifying!Recordpricesarefinallyahappytopicofdiscussionaroundthedinnertableandaresettinganewstrideofprideinthecattlemen’sstep.

After2014weallfeellikewewillbe“LeadingtheCharge”ofgreaterproduction,strongergeneticsandrenewedenthusiasmforourcows.You,theCAAmember,arethefirst‘linkinthechain’thatmakesthisallhappen.YOUarethereasonwhyweare“LeadingtheCharge,”andwhywemustcontinuetodoso.

AsyourAssociation,wewanttosupportyouduringthisexcitinganddynamictime.Throughout2014wehaveaddedmembervaluebyexpandingourservicesforyou.BeingproactivehasalwaysandwillcontinuetobeoneofthetopprioritiesofyourAssociationandBoardofDirectors.Wehavebeenwithyoufor110spiritedyears.WithforwardthinkingwearenowembarkingonaneweratocontinuetoshowcasetheAngusbreedinwaysthatwehavenotyetseen.

EnétantvotreAssociation,nousvoulionsvousencouragerdurantcetempssidynamique.Lorsdel’année2014,nousavionsrajoutélavaleurauxmembresetaméliorénosservicespourvous.LaproactivitéatoujoursétéparmilesprioritésvaloriséesparvotreAssociationetvotreconseild’administration,dontcelavacontinuerdanslesprochainesannées.Nousétionsavecvouspour110merveilleusesannées.Enpensantàl’avenir,nousallonsembarquerdansunenouvelleèrequivamettreenvaleurlaraceAngusdemanièrequenousn’avionsjamaisvuauparavant.

President’sMessage•Corinne Gibson Wowwherehasthepastyeargone!IamlategettingthisPresident’saddresswritten.Iamcold;soakingwet,withcowshitfromheadtotoe.Wejustsetuprecipientcowsanddonors;wehave30heifersthatneedtobeAI’edinthenexthour.IamcurrentlystandinginpouringrainANDyouknowwhat?Icouldnotbehappier.Soundfamiliar?IamanAngusBreederandmylifeisoftenlikethis–hecticandcrazybutIwouldnottradeitfortheworld.So,asIthinkaboutthisPresident’saddress,IrealizehowgratefulIamformyAnguscowsandfortheincrediblygreattimesweareexperiencinginthecattleindustry.IamalsoremindedofthecommitmentofthemanyAngusbreederswhotougheditoutwhenthingswerenotsorosyandwhenstandinginthecoldwasnotsoeasy.IcannothelpbutfeelveryblessedasIwrapupmyterm.

AsItraveledthecountrythispastyearasthePresidentoftheCAA,IhavefeltanoverwhelmingprideineveryfieldofAnguscattleIpassed.IstartedoutmyyeartouringsomegreatAnguscattleintheMaritimesandasItraveledthroughthiscountry,justseeingthoseAngusmothercowsandthosemasterfulAngusbullsinthebreedingpastures,filledmewithpride.HavingbeencomparedtoanAngusmothercowmyself(perhapsabitprotectiveandeasydoing),IcannothelpbutsmileasIrealizethatthereareveryveryfewherdsinourcountry,thatarenotbackedbyAnguscows.

TheoperationandleadershipofalargebreedAssociationisacomplex,interestingandattimesdifficultjob.NeverdoubtthatyourCAAboardandyourCAAstaffaretrulydoingtheverybesttheycantoensureapositivefutureforourbreed.ServingasPresidenthasbeenbothrewardingandchallenging;butalwaysanhonor.Ihopeyouhavenoticedthattheturnaroundtimeforworksubmittedtoourofficehasbecomeminimalandveryefficient.TheCanadianAngusFoundationisflourishingandIamproudtohavebeenapartofthemanyprogramsthatassistyouthinallsectorsofourAngusindustry.Thispastyearwehavefacedchallengesaswell,suchasourinabilitytoproperlyservicetheDNAtestingneedsofourmembers.Weappreciateyourpatienceaswehavetriedtoalleviatetheseissues.

HaveIachievedallmygoalsasCAAPresident?Well,sadly,no,Ihavenot.Yousee,Iamabitspoiled,andIamquiteusedtogettingmyownway!HoweverinaBoardsituation,thatisnotalwaysthecase.Idohowever;feelgreataccomplishmentinfacilitatingthedemocraticprocessneededinanyorganization.IfeellikeIhaveallowed-evenencouraged-yourincrediblytalentedBoardofDirectorstodotheworktheyneededtodotomovetheAngusbreedandyourAssociationpositivelyintothefuture.

Ihavesincerelyappreciatedhearingfrommanyofourbreedersoverthepastyear.ThatisexactlywhatIwanted.Thehardestpartisnotbeingabletosatisfyeveryone.IcanassureyouthatyourcommentswerealwayspresentedtotheBoardandyouropinionshavemadeanimpact.Sothankyoutoallmyfellowbreeders.

Positivity,Optimism,TeamWorkandSolutionFocusedThinkingisthewaytoensurefuturesuccess...

1. Let’s celebrate what we already have. ThegreatestandmostabundantbreedofcattleinCanada.AverystrongAssociationthatisnotafraidofmakingcontroversial,harddecisionsifneededtomoveusevenfurtherahead.AnenviableyouthfactorofyoungAngusbreedersbackedbyanAssociationthatfullysupportsthatyouth.AdedicatedstaffandmanagementofourAssociationwiththegoalofprovidingthebestcustomerserviceintheindustry.MostimportantlythecommitmentofincredibleAngusbreederslikeyourselves,whoaretrulythelifebloodofthisbreed’ssuccess.

2. Let’s Focus on Working as a Team to Build the Future.Weneedeverymembers’inputandyes,wealsoneedyourcriticism.Butratherthanjustcriticizepleasetrytosuggestpossiblesolutions.Weneedeveryoneworkingtogethertoreallyensureapositivefuture.Now,thatdoesnotmeanwewillalwaysagreeoralwaysgetourownway,butitdoesmeanwewillalwaysworktowardsthecommongoalofastrongAngusbreedandAssociation.

3. Let’s Remember What Really Matters. ThetruevalueofFamily,Friends,FaithandoursharedloveoftheAngusbreed.AswegatherthisJunetocelebratethispastyearinAngus-let’srememberthatweareallapartofan“Angusfamily”andthattrulyissomethingthatmatters.

Thisannualreportfocuseson‘theyearthatwas’2014.LastyearwasagreatoneforCanada’sAngusproducers,andCanadiancattlemen.Finally,ourconfidenceincowspaidoffinanexceptionalway.Ourconfidenceandcommitmenthasbeenlong-termthroughsomevery,very‘lean’years…butafter2014weallfeellikewewillbe,“LeadingtheCharge”ofgreaterproduction,strongergeneticsandrenewedenthusiasmforourcows.

Basedonourpresenteconomicstate,withabeliefsteepedinthesustainabilityofourmarketforsomeyears,yourCAABoardofDirectorshasplannedforourfuture.YourCAAcouldn’tbemoreexcitedaboutourcollectivefuture.Pleaseacceptthefollowingreviewof2014withalistofourhighlights.

Priortoreviewingourhigh-points,however,Iapologizetoyouforourmostsignificantchallengeofthepastyear,theworstsituationwe'veexperiencedinrecentmemory:issueswithservicesregardinggenetictesting,primarilytheachievementofparentageverification.Itwasacompletedisasterfortoolongaswecontinuallyfoundourselvesfailingyouintheprovisionofthisessentialservice.Icanandwillneverbeabletosaythisenoughnorwithadequateemphasis:THANKYOUforyourpatienceandunderstandingthroughthebetterpartof2014.Fromthepast,however,welearnhowtomoveforwardandIamproudtosayourturnaroundtimenowonDNAtestingisasquickasithaseverbeen.

10)As a member and industry educational and networking opportunity, our initiative with Certified Angus Beef (CAB) LLP, Carcass101,hadbeenagoalforanumberofyears.WeofferedthefirstintakelastJuneandaresatisfiedandinspiredbytheoutcomeandevaluations.9)February 1st, 2014 we commenced mortgage payments on your new national headquarters. Webudgetedforitandwereconfidentwecouldaffordthesepaymentswithoutimpactingourmonthlycashflow.Iamsoproudtobeabletosaythat,attheendofthisfirstyearofanadditional$22,185.17paymenteachmonth,yourCAAmanagedthenewexpensewithouttakingfromreservesorasingledollarfromourline-of-credit.8)In early 2014 we started offering EPD-blending which gives us daily updates based on submitted data for every animal in the CAA Herd Book.Weheardyourinputthattwoorthreeevaluationseachyearwerenotcurrentenough,particularlywhenourfriendsintheAmericanAngusAssociationhaveaweeklyupdate.Ournew'inhouse'capabilitytogeneratenotonlydailyEPDsbutgenomically-enhancedEPDs(GE-EPDs)ensuresourmembers'informationistrulycurrent,even'cuttingedge'basedonTODAY'Sdata.7)I include this every year, but here it is once again... the 2014 National Convention. Onenotabledifferencein2014,andarealhighlight,wasthenumberof"YoungBreeders"inattendanceaswellasthenumberofhonouredguestswewereabletocelebrate.6) Undertaking the Female Longevity and Sustainability Project,withunprecedentedsupportfromProvincialAssociationsandtheCanadianAngusFoundation.Thisprojectcomesaboutfrommemberdemandfortheneedtoassurestructuralcorrectnessthroughthecreationofobjectivestandardsinhoof,leg,udderandteatphenotypeandtheirheritablegeneticpredictor.Wecompletedtheinitialphaseofthisprojectandarelookingatvariousgrantandpartnershipopportunitiesforthegenetictestingphase.Wewillbeworkingonthisprojectforyearsyet,andaresoproudwhenwecantakerequestsandfeedbackfromthemembershipandworktowardsthecreationofnewmembervaluebasedonyourideas.5) The continued success of the Foundation's "Building the Legacy" sale,whichbroke$120,000indonationslastyear;whothoughtjust3yearsagothatwe'dtriplethedonationfromthe1stto3rdsale?!Thegenerosityofourmemberscontinuestohumbleandamazemeandweowesuchadebtofgratitudetoallthedonorsofsemen,embryos,experiences,goodsandservices.Ofcourse,weneedto'tipourhats'tothosewhodonatea'PickoftheHeiferCalfCrop'eachyearlikeWilbarCattleCo.,SouthViewRanchandYoungDaleAnguswhojointheesteemedrankswithpastdonorLLBAngus.ThesefolksINSPIREusandwejoyfullyandrespectfullyrecognizetheircontributiontothefutureofourbreed.

4)In September, 2013, CAA President Elect Corinne Gibson demanded that we improve turnaround time on member work submitted by mail, fax, e-mail and drop-ins. YourCAA’straditionalbackloginJuly,August,SeptemberandOctoberwasinthe20-30dayrange,or4-6weeksbehindwhentheworkfirstarrived.AtCorinne’surging,IpledgedaturnaroundtimetotheBoardofDirectorsthatwasvastlylessthanwe’dachievedhistoricallyand,infact,evenlessthanourstandard‘10workingdays’,ortwoweeks,formostoftheyear.Withoneexception,wemetmystatedobjectivethrough2014.Saveforourdelaysandchallengesduetoparentagetesting,IamsoveryproudofthereducedturnaroundtimethatourMemberServiceTeamhasprovidedwithtopshelfservice.WhenwesurveyedyourCustomerSatisfactionlastfall,youratedan87.3%‘Satisfied’resultandIamveryproudofthislevel.Knowingthat10%indicatedourcustomerservicemustbebetter,wewillspend2015workingtobetterserveyouandalsoincreasethenumberof‘HighlySatisfied’members. 4)En septembre 2013, le Directeur du CAA Corinne Gibson a exigé que nous améliorons le délai d’exécution des travaux de membre soumis par courrier, fax et courriels.L’arrièreenjuillet,août,septembreetoctobreaétéde20à30jours,ou4à6semainesderetardlorsquelestravauxsontarrivéspourlapremièrefois.J’aipromisundélaid’exécutionauConseild’administrationquiaétéconsidérablementmoinsquenousavionsatteinthistoriquementetencoremoinsquenosstandardsde10joursouvrables,oudeuxsemaines,pourlaplupartdel’année.Avecuneexception,nousavonsrencontrémonobjectif.Lorsquenousavonssondésurvotresatisfactiondelaclientèlel’automnedernier,vousavezdonnéunrésultatde87,3%«satisfaits»etjesuistrèsfierdeceniveau.Sachantque10%ontindiquénotreserviceàlaclientèledoitêtremieux,nousallonspasserl’annéeprochaine,entravaillantpourmieuxvousserviretégalementd’augmenterlenombredemembres«trèssatisfaits».

During2013,theBoardofDirectorsapprovedacontributionof$75,000totheinternallyrestrict-edfund.TheinternallyrestrictedamountsarenotavailablewithouttheapprovaloftheBoardofDirectors.TheBoardofDirectorsapprovedtheuseof$167,000ofthefundin2013fortheconstructionofthenewofficebuilding.

During2013,theBoardofDirectorsresolvedtorestrictanamountequalto1%(previously3%)ofthatyear’sregistrationrevenues,consistingofregistration,membershipsandtransfers,forthenextthreeyearsbeginningin2014.In2014thiswasamendedbytheBoardofDirectorstorestrictanamountequalto1%ofthatyear’sregistration,membershipandtransferrevenuesuntilsuchatimethatthefundisequalto15%ofgrossannualrevenue.Subsequenttoyearend,ares-olutionwaspassedtowaivethe1%requirementuntil2015.Accordingly,therewerenotransferstointernallyrestrictedfor2014.

7. Canadian Angus Foundation Inc.:TheCanadianAngusFoundationInc.(the“Foundation”)isincorporated,asacorporationwithoutsharecapital,undertheCanadaCorporationsAct.TheFoundationoperatestoreceivedonationsforpurposesoffundingscholarshipsandthepreservationofAssociationarchives.

TheFoundationisaregisteredcharityundertheIncomeTaxActandaccordinglyisexemptfromincometaxes,providedcertainrequirementsaremet.TheAssociationexercisescontrolovertheFoundationbyvirtueofitsstatusasthe‘singlemember’oftheFoundation.Assuch,theCAABoardofDirectorsannuallyapprovestheelectedFoundationBoardofDirectors.

TheaccountsoftheFoundationhavenotbeenconsolidatedinthesefinancialstatements.

ThefinancialinformationoftheFoundationasatDecember31,2014aresummarizedasfollows:

Inaccordancewithdonorimposedrestrictions,$243,135(2013-$209,964)oftheFoundation’sassetsaretobeusedtoprovidescholarshipstojuniorcandidatesandotherjuniorprogramming.

RegionalPresident’sReportBritish Columbia President ReportAs2015cameinwehaveembarkedintounchartedwaterwithcattlepricesthehighesttheyhavebeeninrecordedhistory.Bullsalesremainedstrongthroughouttheseasonanddemandforfemalesareatthestrongestlevelsinhistory.TheBCAngusAssociationinthepastyearhashadmanyoutstandingeventstakeplace.Showswerewellattendedandinterestinthebreedhasbeenoutstanding.Ofcoursenoboatfloatswithoutthehelpofalotofpeople.ImustsaytheBoardofDirectorsoftheBCAngusAssociationhasbeenoneofthefinestgroupofpeopleapersoncouldeverworkwith.Ourfieldman,JackBrown,hasbeendoinganoutstandingjobattendingsalesandeventsacrosstheprovinceandhasdoneagreatjobatkeepingourbreedfrontandcentretocommercialCattlemenprovincewide.

Thisyearhasalsohadsomelowpointsaswellwiththepassingofour50yearmemberandHonoraryPresidentMr.FrankStrimbold.FrankwasapioneerbreederandagreatmanwhodedicatedhislifetotheAngusbreedanddiditwithdignity.Hewillbemissedbyeveryonewhoseliveshetouched.Wealsohavesome25yearAngusmembersthisyear:RogerandSueTaylor(RSTAngus)PrinceGeorge;HermannandSandraSeggewiss(GlencroftAngus)Lumby.Sometimeduringthecourseoftheyearwewillhavetobesuretoformallyrecognizethesepeople.WemaynothavethelargestmembershipinCanada,butthepassionourbreedershaveforthebreedissomethingtobehold.

Alberta President Report Withthestrengthoftheindustryonthemonetarysidebeingexceptionalthisfallitislookingliketheoutlookforthisgreatindustrywillcontinueintotheforeseeablefuture.InwritingthisIhopethatyouallarewinteringwellandyourprojectsareallgettingcaughtupandcalvingthathashappenedhaswentwellandthecalvingtocomecontinuestogowell.Angusisbecomingamoreandmoreknownnameintheaverageconsumerhousehold,andtheeverydayconsumerisrelatingAngustoQuality.Forthiswearethankfulfor.

TheAAAboothvisitedmanyeventstopromotetheAngusadvantagetoproducersandconsumersalike.WehaveagreatBoardinmyopinionandI’mgratefulfortheopportunitytogettoworkwithmanyofthesegreatmindswhoIfeelareanassettothebreed.TheAAABoardofDirectorsareconstantlyworkingatwaystokeeptheAngusbrandtoponthemindsofconsumers,aswellascomingupwithwaystohelptheproducerspromotetheirproduct.TherearefantasticAngusgeneticsacrossCanada,thiswiththediligentworkoftheproducerswillkeeptheAngusbreedsteadilyimproving.It’sveryimportantweallworktogetherandcontinuetoconstantlyfocusoureffortsonkeepingAngusasthenumberonebreedandIfeelourBoardistakingmeasurestocontinuethiseffort.Greatpeoplewithafantasticproductbeingdiligentwithintheindustryallowsthebreedtocontinuewiththestatusofsuperiorqualityitisknownfor.ThistimeintheindustryisexcitingandthefuturelooksgreatfromallaspectsofthevaluechainandaswemoveforwardwewillcontinuetopromotetheAngusbreedasbestsuitedtoexcelateverylevel.

Saskatchewan President ReportTheSaskatchewanAngusAssociationhadaverybusyandextremelyproductiveyearin2014.AnexcellentnewBreederDirectorywasproducedinthespring-thankstoeveryonewhoparticipated.WehostedtheannualConventionfortheCanadianAngusAssociationthisyearinMooseJaw.ItwasverywellattendedandIthinkeveryonehadaveryfuntime.TheRancherEndorsedDaywasveryinformativeandhadsomegreattoursandspeakers.WehostedtheSaskatchewanAngustourintheSwiftCurrentareainAugustwherethelocalbreedersshowedusagreatdealofhospitalityandgoodfellowshipwithallourbreeders.Itwasverywellputonandthelocalbreedersdeserveahugepatonthebackforajobwelldone.Theyshowedusagreattimeaswellasagreatsetofcattle.

OurGoldShowswereheldduringtheLloydminsterStockadeRoundup,whichwasanexcellentevent,aswellasatCanadianWesternAgribitionwherewealsohostedtheNationalShow.Verygoodsetofcattleattendedboththisyear.TherewasagreatcrowdwatchingtheNationalandtheatmospherewaselectricwhenthechampionswerebeingselected.TheAssociationsponsored‘MasterpieceSale’wasexcellent,aswasthe‘Power&PerfectionSale’,oneheldthedaybeforetheshow,andonethedayafter.

WiththisbusyyearahugethankyougoesouttoallthosewhositontheBoard,allthosewhovolunteeredfortheConventioncommitteeandhelpedoutattheNationalShowandBelindaformakingallthisrunsosmoothly.

Manitoba President ReportTheManitobaAngusAssociationanditsbreedershavecompletedanothersuccessfulyear.AgDayscontinuestobeagreatplacetohaveourboothtoconnectwithalargenumberofpeopleinashorttime.IthasbeenagreatassettohaveCAA’sCherylHazenbergpresentatthiseventtosellthegreenRancherEndorsedAngustags.ThebullsaleswerestrongandtherequestforAngustokensfor4-HerswithAngusinfluencedcalvesheldsteady.

WeheldourAnnualSummerGoldPenShowinconjunctionwithShowdowninVirden.Althoughwecontinuetobedisappointedinthespectatorturnout,thenumberandqualityofcattlewasgreat.Wewouldliketothankallthevisitorswhotookthetimetobringthecattleout.Consideringmanyofthefloodedroadshadjustopenedthedaybeforetheshow.Severalofourmembersvolunteeredat“Showdown”andenjoyedseeingourJuniorstakepartinsuchagreatevent.Itwasahugesuccess.

Throughoutthefall,theMAAsponsoredcoffeeattheRancherEndorsedAngustagfeedersales.ThisyearitwasfuntobeapartofseeingallofthosesmilingfacesattheAuctionMarts,withsellersreceivingrecordpricesfortheircalves.InNovemberwehostedaverysuccessfulAngusGoldShowinconjunctionwithMLE.Thenumberswereupandthequalityofcattlewasexcellent.Thankstotheorganizingcommittee.ThiswasfollowedbyourKeystoneKlassicRed&BlackAngussaleinearlyDecember.Thisyearwasthehighestaverageinthehistoryofthesale,whichisadirectresultofthehighqualityofcattleselected.

ThispastyearwehavecontinuedtoseecommercialproducerssellofftheirherdsinManitoba,takingadvantageofthehighprices.Wehopethattheupswinginthecattlepricesmayenticesomenewbreedersintothebusiness.Welookforwardtotheyearaheadwithrenewedhopeandanticipationofabrightfutureintheindustry.AsanAssociationwewillcontinuetoworkhardforourmembership,inthepromotionofthesegreatcattle.WeappreciateallofthevolunteerhoursputinbyeachoftheBoardmembersandthesupportoftheAngusbreedersacrossManitoba.

RegionalPresident’sReport(cont.)Quebec President ReportThepastyearwasoneoftryingtorebuildparticipationbythemembershipinallofouractivities.MostoftheBoardmemberswerecalledupontorepresentourAssociationatthevariousactivities,bothpurebredandcommercial.Clearly,itcannotbeexpectedthatthePresidentandacoupleofclosefriendsorpartnersshouldrepresenttheAssociation,butthateachmemberbeanambassadorforAnguscattle.Inaddition,ourrepresentativeCynthiaJackson,wascalledupontoworktowardbecomingthefaceofourAssociationasshecanadvancethepreferenceforAngusasabenefitforthebreedingeneralandnotjustforaparticularherd.

MembersfromthesouthofQuebecwereparticularlyactiveandtheypresentedalargepartofthecattleatExpoBoeufinVictoriaville,oneofourGoldShows.TheGoldShowatShawvillesawmostoftheparticipantsfromOntariowiththecloseproximitytothebreedersinEasternOntario.IhopethatmoreQuebecAngusbreederswillbepresentthisyear.

TheQuebecAngusfinancialpositionhasbeenstrongforthepastsevenyearsdespitesomeclaimstothecontrary,andthishascontinuedin2014.EveryeffortneedstobemadetocontinuetopromoteAngusforthebenefitofallourmembershipandtohelpdevelopthebestmarketforQuebecAngusbullsandfemales.

Maritime President ReportTheMaritimeAngusAssociationhadanotherverysuccessfulyear.ThefielddayinJunehostedinNBwasasuccess,andthankyoutotheBoothandOultonfamiliesfororganizing.TheCAAPresident,CAAambassador,andCEOwereabletotoursomefarmsaswellwhiletheywereontheEastCoast.

TheGoldShowsintheMaritimesinthesummerandfallhadstrongnumbersonceagain.Charlottetown,Halifax,andSussexwerethehosts.ThePEIFuturitywasverysuccessful,aswellastheinauguralNBfuturityattheSussexBeefExpo.The‘AngusinAction’salethispastfallsawqualitypurebredandcommercialAngusfemaleentries,andthebiggestcrowdinrecentyears.Itisturningintoagreatallbreedssaleday.

InlateFall,DaleBlackwashiredasthenewfieldmanfortheMaritimeAssociation.ThisisthefirsttimetheMaritimeshavehadaccesstoourownfieldmanintheregion.TheAssociationlooksforwardtoworkingwithDaleindevelopingtherolehecanplayinpromotingAngusgeneticsincommercialherds.

Canadian Red Angus Association CanadianRedAngusPromotionSocietyhadanothergreatyearin2014.Weworkedtomaintainourservicestomemberswiththebullsalepromotioncampaign,whichhelpsmemberspromotetheirbullsales.Wecontinuetoofferaheiferbursarytojuniors,tohelpthemwiththepurchaseofaRedAngusheifer,aswellasawarding4-HmembersshowingaRedAngusorRedAngusinfluenceprojectwithacooltokenfromCanadianRedAngusPromotionSociety.OurprintadvertisingshowingthebenefitsofRedAngus,andusingthemasacrossonheifers,hasreceivedgreatresponse.WeareworkingonplanningforthefutureofCanadianRedAngusPromotionSocietyandseeinghowwecanoffermorevaluetomembers.WeplantocontinuewithoursuccessfuleventsandgrowwiththedemandforRedAngus.

CanadianJuniorAngusAssociation•ChadLorenz,CJAAPresident2014provedtobeanexcitingyearacrosstheentireindustryandinturnhadnothingshortofapositiveimpactontheCanadianJuniorAngusAssociation.TheCJAAservestoprovideleadershipanddirectionforJuniorAngusmembersacrossCanada.ThroughoutthecalendaryearwehosttwomajoreventsthatareadministeredentirelybytheourBoardofDirectorsandAssociation,beingGOAL(GuidingOutstandingAngusLeaders)conferenceinFebruaryandShowdown,ourNationalJuniorAngusshowinJuly.Wealsooperateascholarshipprogramwhichrewardsthreememberswith$4500inpost-secondaryfundingeachyear.TheCJAAofferstravelbursariesformembersacrossCanadathatwouldliketoattendGOALandcoordinatesexchangeswiththetwoJuniorAssociationsintheU.S.Inadditiontoourmainprojectitems,wehavealsoworkedcloselywiththeCanadianAngusFoundationtohelpdevelopandimplementsomeoftheirnewawardsandprograms.

MyAmbassadortermbeganinJuneof2014atNationalConventioninMooseJaw,SK.Thiswastrulyanextraordinaryeventanditwasveryhumblingtoseeourbreeders’overwhelmingsupportfortheCanadianAngusFoundationandtheAmbassadorprogramthroughouttheweek.EvencompetingasafinalistatConventionisanaspectoftheambassadorshipthatIbenefitedfromimmenselyandIamtrulygratefulforallofthecontactsandopportunitiesIgainedthroughouttheprocess.

openAngusshow.InlateNovember,ItravelledtoRegina,Saskathewan,forCanadianWesternAgribition,whereIonceagainhadthechancetobetheringstewardfortheBlackAngusshow.AttendingtheseshowsgavemetheopportunitytointeractwithseveralAngusbreederswhomIhadn’tpreviouslymet,buildinganetworkthatIwillcarrywithmeforever.

InearlyFebruary,IattendedthefirstGOALconferencetoeverbeheldinEasternCanada.Around60juniorswereinattendancefortheweekendinGuelph,Ontario,andtherewascertainlyafeelingofoptimismandenthusiasmfromall.Itwasatreattolistentoavarietyofhighqualityspeakersand,withoutadoubt;therewassomethingtobelearnedfromeachone.

Iaminhighanticipationofthisyears’NationalConventionwhereanotherdeservingsetoffinalistswillcompetetobethenextAmbassador.IamalsolookingforwardtoatriptoCharlottetown,PrinceEdwardIslandinJunefortheMaritimeFieldDay,aswellastravellinginternationallylaterthissummer.

TheAmbassadorprogramhashelpedmetoconnectandnetworkwithindustryfolksfromacrossCanadaandbeyond.IwouldliketothanktheAnguscommunityforallowingmetobeinthisrole,andforallofthesupportIhavereceivedthroughouttheyear.IcertainlyliveandbreatheAnguscattleeachandeverydayandwillforeverbeanambassadorofthisgreatbreed.ToeachandeverypersonthatsupportstheCanadianAngusFoundationandCanadianJuniorAngusprograms:pleaseacceptthemostsincerestappreciation.Icertainlywouldn’tbewhereIamtodaywithoutyoursupport!

FrankandDiannehailfromtheTopleyarea.FrankcomesfromapioneerfamilythereandDiannemovedtotheareainhighschool.Theynamedtheirfarmforthemyriadofpoplartreesinthearea.FrankandDianneweremarriedin1963andtogetherraisedtheirsixchildrenonthefarm.

ThisyearFrankisrecognizedforhis50yearsasanAngusbreeder.HerealizesthisisanhonournotaffordedalotofpeopleandheisveryproudofhisPoplarMeadowsherdanditslongevity.AthirdgenerationofAngusbreedersisgrowingupintheextendedStrimboldfamily.Allsixoftheirchildrenaremostsuccessful.

ThroughouttheyearsFrankhasservedtheAngusAssociationwell.HewasaDirectorfromthecentralinteriorformanyyearsandheservedseveraltermsaProvincialPresident.HewasalsotheBCDirectortotheCanadianAngusAssociation

MostsuccessfulpeopleareverybusypeopleandDianneandFrankarenoexception.Theywereveryactivein4-Hatthelocalanddistrictlevel.Aswellasfarmingtheybothworkedoffthefarm.DiannewasateacherandFrankdroveaschoolbusafteryearsinthewoods.TheywereactivewithcrosscountryskiingaswellandFrankwasanadvisortotheBCWinterGames.

Nottobeforgotten,DianneandFrankhaveoneofthemostbeautifulgardensinallofBC.AwalkthroughtheparklikesettingtalkingAnguscattlewithalifelongAngusenthusiastisatreat.

Alberta • Brian & Kim GeisBrian&KimGeis:Brian&Kimhavebeenlong-timesupportersofAlbertaAngusandhavehadalastingimpactontheAngusbreedinAlberta.

GeisfarmingoperationsintheBarrheadareaofAlbertacommencedin1928whengrandfatherHenryGerloffmovedtothepresentlocationofGeisAngus.In1957,DonandErikaGeispurchasedtheoriginalfarm,andthenformanyyearsmaintainedbotharegisteredandagradeHolsteinherdwithinvolvementfromthechildrenDarlene,Brenda&Brian.In1976,anewregisteredAngusherdwasestablished,withthedairyherdbeingfadedoutnineyearslater.FollowingthemarriageofBrianGeistoKimConway,aRedAngusdivisionwasalsosetupatGeisAngus.

Brian&KimalongwiththeirchildrenJenna&Robert,alongwithBrian’sparentsDon&Erika,wereinvolvedwithbringingtheGeisAngusprogramintotheirpresenthightechstateofmodernbeefbreeding.

AcceptanceoftheGeisAngusbreedingprogramiswidespread,withsalesofbothlivebreedingstock,semenfromoutstandingherdsiresandembryosrepresentingthebestoftheGeisprogrambeingpurchasedandshippedtomanypartsofCanadaandtoleadingAngusbreedersinothercountriesincludingtheUnitedStates,UnitedKingdom,Japan,Argentina,Denmark,Mexico,BrazilandthefirstRedAngusfemaleexportedtoAustralia.

SuccessoftheGeisHolsteinandAngusbreedingprograms,togetherwiththeiractiveinvolvementinthecommunity,culminatedintheGeisfamilybeingnamedFarmFamilyOfTheYearbyEdmontonNorthlandsin1982.Andthenagain,in1989,thefamilywereelectedbytheirpeersinthebusinessasAlbertaAngusBreedersOfTheYearandRedAngusBreederin1997.GeisAnguswonthe2002RBCBeefSupremeChallengeatAgribition.In2006,GeisAnguswasinductedintheAlbertaAngusAssociationHallofFameasaContemporaryBreeder.In2009theWorldAngusForumwashostedinCanada,whereBrianwaspartoftheorganizingboardandasafamilyvolunteeredthroughouttheevent.Geis’havebeenrecognizedbytheirlocalcommunitywiththeBusinessExcellenceAwardin2010andagainin2013whentheywereawardedtheConservationAward.

Evenwiththedispersaloftheirpurebredoperationin2012,BrianandKimcontinuetopromotethebreedandarestillahugepartofourAnguscommunity.

Manitoba • Darin BouchardDarinBouchardhasbeenveryactiveinthecattleindustrysincehewasaveryyoungchild.Hewasa4-Hmemberfor10yearsandthenamemberof4-HAmbassadorsfortwoyearsparticipatinginvarioustripsandfarmexchanges.HehasworkedwithmanydifferentbreedsofcattleovertheyearshoweverhisloveforAnguscattleseemedtobethestrongest.HeraisedSimmentalcattleasaboywithhisfamily,andin1985hestartedhisownherdofAnguscattle-DrylandAngusFarms-withthepurchaseoftwocowsandayearlingheifer.HethenaddedasmallgroupofRedAnguscowsthatwouldeventuallybecomethestartofDaryllLogeot’sD-BarRedAngusherd.Darin’ssmallherdgrewandpaidthebillswhileattendinguniversity.In1992hemarriedKrista(Richmond)andtheyreceived2twoblackAnguscowsasaweddingpresent!WhilelivinginVirden,DarinworkedintheoilindustryforChevronResourcesandboardedcattleatLloydandIhrosHopley’sfarm.DarinandLloydtookinmanyfairsandshowstogetherandalwaysenjoyedmeetingnewpeople.Darinparticipatedinmanycattleshowsatlocalfairs,theWinterFairandAg-ExinBrandonaswellasAgribitioninReginaandsomeshowsintheUSA,earningmanyribbonsandbanners.In1996theBouchardsmovedtoCypressRiverandcontinuedwithDrylandAngusFarmsandalsohadsomecattleinpartnershipwithKrista’sparentsandbrother-KDRAngus.Thebreedingandshowingcontinuedunderbothherds.In1993DarinjoinedtheMBAngusAssociationBoardasadirector.HesatonvariouscommitteesthroughouthisstayontheBoardandwasVicePresidentin1994,becamePresidentin1998,andlaterthatyearhehadtheopportunitytotakeovertheCanadianDirectorpositioninBlaineCanning’sabsence.DarinenjoyedhistimeontheCanadianAngusboardfrom1998untilthefallof2002whenBlainewasabletorejointheBoard.WhileontheBoardhechairedtheBrandedBeefProgramcommittee.HeenjoyedthemanyrelationshipsthathemadeattheCanadianlevel.Darinenjoyedpromotingthebreedandattendedsalesandmeetings,aswellastheManitobaWinterBeefDayscircuittakingtheAngusboothwithhim.In1995hewasco-chairoftheCanadianAngusAnnualMeetingheldinManitobaandenjoyedhostingAnguscattlemenfromacrossCanadaandtheUSA.

Saskatchewan • Larry TonerLarryTonerhasdevotedhislifetoAnguscattleandtheCanadianandSaskatchewanAngusAssociations.Itismenlikehimwhohaveleftalegacytotheirchildrenandtheirchildren’schildren.ThroughthededicationtotheimprovementanddevelopmentofourAngusbreedovertheyears,LarryhasbeenanassetinpromotingAnguscattlearoundtheworld.

LarryandDawncelebratedtheir40thweddinganniversaryJune8,2014andtraveledtoIrelandtovisitfamilyandAnguscattlefriends.Theyhavefivechildren:Colin(Pat)Toner,Leanne(Kevin)Karpyshyn,Ryan(Ashley)Toner,Mark(deceased),Jim(deceased)andeightgrandchildren:Ross,Casey&EdieToner;Marcus,James&KyleKarpyshyn,andKane&OwenToner.Larrywasa4-HmemberatHandel4-HBeefClubformanyyearsandtheleaderformanymore.Thefamilyareveryactivein4-Handthenextgenerationsarestillgoingstrongin4-Hactivitiesandshowingcattle.

Themanyagricultural,localboardsandcommitteesLarrysatonovertheyearsincludedtheAgribitionCommercialCattleCommitteewhenthenewcommercialcattlebarnwasbuilt.Inthelate70’sLarrywaselectedtotheSaskatchewanAngusBoard.OneofthemajoraccomplishmentsofthatboardwastheestablishmentoftheAngusandAnguscrossfeedersaleatMooseJaw. LarryservedontheCanadianAngusBoardin1985duringtheWorldAngusForuminEdmonton.In2005hewasfortunateenoughtobeCanadianPresident,thistimewhentheWorldForumwasinSouthAfrica.DuringtheconferenceinSouthAfricaLarryhadthehonorofinvitingtheworldtoCanadaforthe2009WorldForum.IntheinvitationLarryemphasizedtheyouththatweregoingtobeondisplayhereinCanadaandthegreathospitalityhehadplannedfortheworldtoenjoy. Larrywaslaternamedthe2009WorldAngusForum’sTourChair.Withthehelpofhiswife,Dawne,andaTourConsultingGroupoutofCalgarythisiswhatevolved:aPreForumTourwhichtraveledthroughoutAlberta,theRockyMountainsandreturnedfortheCalgaryStampedeandtheWorldForumatSpruceMeadows.LarryandDawnethenhostedthePointsEastTourwhichincludedatourofaHutteriteColony,SouthernSaskatchewanandtheTempleGardensMineralSpainMooseJaw.FromtheretheytravelednorthtowardsSaskatoon,stoppingatvarioussitesandtouringmoreAngusherds. SinceJanuaryof2009,LarryhasbeensellingcattleinsuranceacrossWesternCanada.ThroughoutLarry’scattlecareeritisthepeopleheenjoysvisitingwiththemost.Itdoesn’tmatterwhereorwhotheyare,Larryalwayshastimetoshareamomenttotalkaboutcattle

Maritimes • Jim ColodeyTheMaritimeAngusAssociationispleasedtoannouncethatJimColodeyhasbeenselectedasHonouraryPresidentoftheAssociationfor2015. JimhasbeenafamiliarfacearoundAnguscirclesformanyyears.MostrecentlyJimservedastheMaritimeDirectorontheCanadianAngusBoardofDirectorsfrom2008to2014. Jim,hiswifeHilda,anddaughterCatherinehavebeeninvolvedinourfamilyAngusoperationofBannockburnValleyFarmsincethe1970s.Whilenotmakinganappearanceintheshowringveryoften,JimcertainlyhasrepresentedtheAngusbreedandcouldalwaysbefoundringsideateveryAngusShowintheMaritimesforthepastnumberofyears.JimhasbeenatremendousAmbassadorforthebreedandforthepeopleinvolvedinthebreed.Hebroughtupconcerns,questionsandsuggestionstotheCanadianBoardfromtheMaritimes,andwasnotafraidtospeakhismind. JimhasbeenforthepastfiveyearandcurrentlystillisacurrentDirectoroftheCanadianAngusFoundationBoard.

TheMaritimeAssociationhasbeenluckytohaveJimasanactivememberintheAssociationandasarepresentativeonthenationalstage.

DarinandKrista’schildrenBradyandTaraLeehavebothbeeninvolvedinthelocal4-HclubparticipatingintheJuly1stshowformanyyearsshowingtheirAngussteersandheifers.JustliketheirDad–thecowscertainlyhelpwiththeiruniversityfund!ThecattlebusinesshasbeenagreatwaytomeetpeopleandDarincertainlyhasacquaintanceseverywherehegoesasaresult.

In2009DarinstartedhisemploymentwithSWM,aUSbasedfibercompany,situatedinWinkler.InJanuaryof2014,DarinstartedmanagingMaximTruckandTrailer’sBrandonbranch.DuetoworkcommitmentsthesizeoftheDrylandAngusherdhasdecreasedinthelastcoupleofyears,butDarinstillprideshimselfinowningafewAnguscows.

PeopleandcattlehavealwaysbeentwogreatpassionsinCorinne’slife.GrowinguponamixedfarminSouthernSaskatchewaniswhereCorinne’sinterestin,andlove,forcattlestarted.Aftermeetingherhusband,Clayton,CorinnebegantofallinlovewiththeAnguscow.TheAnguscowhasfueledCorinne’spassionandalsogivenhertheopportunitytomeetmanywonderfulpeople.

ThroughouthertermasPresidentCorinnehasgreatlyenjoyedmeetingmanynewpeoplefromalloverourgreatcountryaswellasabroad.IthasbeenapleasureforhertotourdifferentherdsandshehasnoticedtheadaptabilityofthebreedtothedifferentclimaticconditionswithinCanada.Thisadaptabilityisgreatforourbreedandalargeassetforthecattleindustryasawhole.CorinnehaslivedoutadreamthispastyearasPresident.AlongwithfellowBoardmemberstheyhavejumpedmanyhurdles,andmadenumerouschangesforthebettermentofthebreedinthefuture.

ThenumerousconversationsthatCorinnehashadwithfellowbreedershavebeenajoy.Corinnehasenjoyedtalkingtomanydifferentpeopleabouttheirissuesandtryingherbesttohelpthemsolveanyproblemsthatmayhavearose.IthasbeenapleasureforhertoshowherpassionforthebreedwitheveryoneshehasmetalongherjourneyasyourCAAPresident.

CorinnetakesgreatprideinhostingtheAGMatAngusCentralinCalgaryinJune.Itiswellknownthatshehopestoseearecordnumberofmembersinattendance,andthatthisisdefinitelyaverypossiblefeat.CorinnehasbeenextremelyhumbledandhonouredtorepresenttheAngusbreedasawholeoverthislastyear.SheisextremelygratefulforallthehelpshehashadfromherBoardmembers,theCAAstaffandherCEO,RobSmith.
