CITIZENSHIP IN ACTIONKatie Tyler, 4-H Youth Development [email protected]

Citizenship in Action

The 6th annual Citizenship in Action event will be held February 16-17, 2014 in Bismarck. The program will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday and conclude by 3 p.m. on Monday, February 17.

Youth will: learn how the state executive branch works,  have the opportunity to showcase their

citizenship projects, share ideas on how to have a greater impact in

the community, use their voices to present ideas for positive

change, and learn more about the history of 4-H and the

Extension Service in ND.

The event is sponsored by the NDSU Extension-Center for 4-H Youth Development and the North Dakota 4-H Foundation.

Registration InformationThis program is for any youth age 13 to 18 who is interested in citizenship and the political process. For every ten youth, at least one adult chaperone must accompany; counties may combine to share chaperones. Chaperones must register and pay the same fee as youth participants. If any parents are planning on attending they will be considered a chaperone and will need to register and have completed the youth protection policy process.

Registration will be Sunday, Feb. 16, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Comfort Inn, 1030 Interstate Ave. E., Bismarck.

Page 5: 2014 Extension Youth Conference - NDSU - North Dakota ... Web viewWinter Judging Events. North Dakota ... Animation. Documentary. 4-H ... that reflects personal and community-based

North Dakota 4-H - ShopTalk – February 2014

The cost per participant is $65 and is available through 4honline. The deadline for registration is February 3, 2014. With the registration fee, participants will get a free t-shirt, materials for the event, lodging, and meals during the event.

Lodging and Chaperone InformationEach county will be designated hotel rooms and are responsible for making room assignments accordingly. On February 4, counties will be sent the number of hotel rooms assigned and must turn in who will be in each room to Karla Meikle by February 12. Room arrangements should be based on two to four youth/room and assigned by age. If a county has only one participant, we will work to match them with another county.

Chaperones will not room with youth participants and will be assigned two to a room. Per our Youth Protection Policy, an adult should not share a room with one minor child who is not his/her child. Youth should room with other youth. If the situation dictates that an adult and a youth must share a room, there should be several youth present with a single adult. If a chaperone wishes to room by alone, they will be responsible for making their own room reservations at their expense.

Marketing the Event to your Local CountyA poster has been attached to this message for you to use for local marketing. All participants will receive more information regarding the schedule and dress code via email once they have registered.

EDUCATIONAL TRUNKSLinda Hauge, 4-H Youth Development [email protected]

4-H Educational Trunks

The educational trunks are a great resource for supporting the educational component of the 4-H youth development experience. They include hands-on lessons, directions and most of the necessary materials to conduct a lesson on topics related to many subject matter areas in 4-H.

Descriptions of the trunks available from Fargo can be found at http://www.ndsu.edu/4h/staff_resources/material_check_out/educational_trunks/trunk_descriptions/

Descriptions of the trunks available from Morton County can be found at:http://www.ndsu.edu/4h/staff_resources/material_check_out/educational_trunks/western_trunk_descriptions/

Trunks are housed at the Distribution Center in Morrill Hall on the NDSU Campus and in the Morton County Extension office in Mandan. You must reserve these trunks online using your Outlook calendar. Instructions for reserving a trunk can be found at: http://www.ndsu.edu/fileadmin/4h/Staff_Resources/TrunkReservations.pdf

Managing these trunks without county staff help would not be possible. These expectations must be met for counties to continue to use the 4-H trunks.

1. Inventory and reporting form must be returned with the trunk or faxed to 701.231.8568.

2. If these forms are not returned with the trunk and pieces are missing, counties using the trunk will be charged for missing items.

3. That office will be restricted from reserving future/additional trunks until the bill has been paid.

6

Page 7: 2014 Extension Youth Conference - NDSU - North Dakota ... Web viewWinter Judging Events. North Dakota ... Animation. Documentary. 4-H ... that reflects personal and community-based

North Dakota 4-H - ShopTalk – February 2014

In order to prevent your office from receiving a charge for a missing item, it will be of utmost importance that you do an inventory of the trunk when you receive it and when you return it. If something is missing when you get the trunk, please notify the Center for 4-H immediately.

Inventory sheets are available in each trunk.

If you have questions related to these trunks, please contact Holly Halvorson at [email protected] or call 701. 231.9218.

One quart is exhibited for flax, canola, grasses, small seeded legumes, millet, and seeds of similar size. Ear corn is exhibited with ten ears.

OPERATION MILITARY KIDSDiane Hahn, ND OMK Program [email protected] OMK and 4-H Military Partnerships

Operation: Military Kids has just completed 5 years of programming in North Dakota!  The OMK program has seen a number of changes over those years, with all the federal budget cuts.  But we feel fortunate that although our program has felt the impacts of this in some ways, funding has continued to be available, allowing us to continue this important work.

11

Page 12: 2014 Extension Youth Conference - NDSU - North Dakota ... Web viewWinter Judging Events. North Dakota ... Animation. Documentary. 4-H ... that reflects personal and community-based

North Dakota 4-H - ShopTalk – February 2014

Now, more than ever, collaboration with community partners is vital for the success of the program. Extension has played a major role in helping us reach ND military youth and provide opportunities for them to build life skills and increase resilience.  On behalf of the OMK State Team, I’d like to say “THANK YOU!” to all the Extension/4-H folks around the state who have supported this work in any capacity: instructing educational sessions at a day camp or other event, hosting a community event for military youth and/or families, helping with marketing, participating on the OMK State Team, providing a venue to hold a youth event, chairing or providing activity leadership at camp, or just helping the local office and community to be more aware of military youth and their needs.

Another funding resource which supporting work with military youth is the 4-H Military Partnerships grant.  This grant focuses on enhancing the presence and depth of the 4-H Club experience on the Minot and Grand Forks Air Force bases as well as working to connect geographically dispersed military youth with a local 4-H club.  We know there are over 5000 military youth (ages birth -18yrs) living in communities across ND so there are abundant opportunities in almost every county to reach out to this special population and expose them to the life-changing experience of 4-H.

Upcoming events for military youth and families:

Winter Holiday Party in Fargo, Jan. 19.  Sponsored by the local American Legion Auxiliary, special programming for youth 12 and older http://www.ndsu.edu/fileadmin/4h/OMK/2014WinterHolidayPartyMilitaryKids.pdf

OMK Red Cross Babysitting Clinic for Military Youth in Minot http://www.ndsu.edu/fileadmin/4h/OMK/2014OMKRedCrossBabysitterCourse.pdf

OMK Technology Day Camp in Grand Forks http://www.ndsu.edu/fileadmin/4h/OMK/2014OMKTechnologyDayCamp.pdf

Curriculum/ Program Descriptions

4-H Essential ElementsThis curriculum was designed to help youth development professionals understand the importance of positive development by presenting the 4-H Essential Elements as central to helping young people become competent, contributing adults. It provides a wealth of resources to 1) engage youth development professionals (e.g., 4-H agents/educators) in building the capacity of volunteers, and 2) perpetuate the Essential Elements in programs.

Navigating Romantic Teen Relationships This curriculum is an interactive educational program that assists teens in the decision making process of romantic relationships. The curriculum encourages teens to analyze and apply topics such as gender influence, relationship progression, and desired character qualities.

Are You Ready? The College Transition The curriculum, created by University of Wisconsin Extension, aims to help students and their parents plan ahead for a smooth transition for post-secondary opportunities.  This program helps high school seniors and their parents understand and manage the normal conflicts that result from this transition, increase communication skills, and create a plan for the student to use when faced with conflicts or issues.

CHARACTER COUNTS! in 4-H Youth Development                          CHARACTER COUNTS!SM is a program to strengthen the character of today’s youth and adults. It is built on the consensus that no matter how diverse our opinions, personalities and backgrounds, there are ethical principles that clearly define us at our best. CHARACTER COUNTS! (CC!) teaches the 6 pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. These principles are important because they are the foundation of the behavior expectations for youth and adults involved in ND 4-H youth development. This session will focus on how to assist 4-H leaders, parents and staff in incorporating CC! into your 4-H program.

Take a Stand This set of three 4-H curricula from Texas Extension Service, aims to teach strategies to children and teens to reduce bullying. Topics include conflict resolution, bullying, communication, etiquette, teamwork, and cultural awareness.   The curriculum is written for Grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

2014 4-H Aerospace Event

The ND 4-H Foundation, UND Department of Aerospace Science along with NDSU Extension – Center for 4-H Youth Development will once again be sponsoring the 4-H Aerospace Event which is scheduled for April 27-28, 2014 at UND School of Aerospace in Grand Forks. This program is open to youth ages 12-15 who are interested in learning more about the field of aerospace science. Youth must be accompanied by a chaperone. A brochure is being developed and will be sent to each county office.

Online registration will be available around January 15, 2014. Registration will take place through 4-H online so each county office will have to give approval for the registration. Any adult from your county that registers to come as a chaperone must go through the child protection screening procedure before they are allowed to serve as a chaperone. Counties are responsible to seeing that this is complete before the event.

Registration is limited to 75 youth and will be taken on a first-come first-served basis. Late registrations will be placed on a waiting list, if the program fills. You do not have to be a 4-H member to attend this event. When more details come out, please share this information with 4-H youth, schools and other organizations that might be interested in this event. If you have questions, call 701-231-7251 or email [email protected]

Voices of 4-H History

The 1914 Smith-Lever Act provided federal funding to the Extension Service in every state. To honor this 100 year milestone, the National 4-H History Preservation Team is leading an Oral History program to capture local success stories of Extension and 4-H.

4-H members are encouraged to interview 4-H alumni, volunteers and supporters to share their stories.

The goal of the Voices of 4-H History project is to collect information that reflects personal and community-based 4-H history and illustrates the program’s richly significant story.

We know that North Dakota has many former and current volunteers and 4-H members that have wonderful stories to tell. An example from Utah can be found at http://4h.missouri.edu/go/events/filmfest/2013/films/lareejones.htm Please encourage your 4-H members to use the 4-H filmmaking project to

North Dakota 4-H - ShopTalk – February 2014

We often get asked why 4-H’ers can’t participate in both Project Expo and Clothing Revue at the ND State Fair and the answer is because they are both scheduled at the same time. To remedy the situation, we are proposing that if a 4-H’er would like to participate in both events, they would be slotted for judging for Project Expo at 9:45 a.m. (one hour earlier than the rest of the participants) and then be able to participate in Clothing Revue the rest of the day. We are looking for feedback, so please send comments to [email protected].
