Does your family have a long history of reunions in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, possibly dating back to the Platt National Park days? Or perhaps you are a “newbie” to the peace and serenity

this Park offers. Either way, you are invited to join the Friends of the

Chickasaw National Recreation Area, or Friends of the Park, as they

are commonly known.

For the last two decades, Park Friends Groups have been created

to assist National Parks all across America. These groups support

needed park programs and projects that have been beyond the

reach of appropriated dollars, especially in these days of cut-backs.

Friends Groups are established to help “keep the park’s mission

alive”. Friends support a variety of park activities that might include

interpretive & educational programs, awareness building, fund rais-

ing, membership programs and many of the “extras” that enhance

our park.

We need your help. If you enjoy the special place that the Chickasaw

National Recreation Area is and want to see the amazing beauty and

renewing setting remain for generations to come, become a Friend.

Share your ideas for projects and join hands with other Friends to

support this great resource. Unlike many National Parks, CNRA does

not charge an admission fee for entrance. Perhaps you, your family

or group would like to join Friends of the Park in celebration of that

fact.

Annual memberships are $25 for individuals, $50 for families with

business/corporate levels available. Your dues are tax-deductible and

all funds will be used for our

local park. You will receive

a newsletter, a membership

decal and an invitation to the

annual dinner and meeting.

Membership information is

available at Sulphur Cham-ber of Commerce, 717 W. Broadway,

“I wasn’t born in the Arbuckles, but I got here as fast as I could.” That is my declaration when staking my claim to this beautiful region of Oklahoma. Growing up in this natural beauty, living in a small town with friendly folks and where everyone is your neigh-bor, is a pretty good start in life. It also means that your mama will know what you’ve been doing before you crack the screen door open!

Whether your vacation pursuit is outdoor activities, fun events and attractions or a peaceful retreat, you will find it in the Arbuckles. From north to south, this patch of God’s great earth is blessed with beautiful waters, diverse ecosystems of prairie and forest and geological formations. Lakes, rivers, creeks and springs lend to all types of water sports and serene relaxation. National, state and city parks offer family fun and historical information. The lives of the early-day Chickasaw settlers are demonstrated for all to learn about and enjoy.

South-central Oklahoma’s jewel is the Arbuckle Mountains, which are said to be a geological window into our past and a classroom to modern day students. With I-35 slicing through them, the unusual formations are laid open for all to see.

The Fun Times Magazine is created to assist you on planning and enjoying your time in this land we love. We strive to serve the visitor to the Arbuck-le Area with references to services, maps to cities and parks, listings of attrac-tions, informative stories and invitations from area businesses.

Oh behalf of the resi-dents of the Arbuckle re-gion, Welcome! We believe after you visit this gorgeous stretch of Oklahoma, you’ll agree – when God created the Arbuckles, He must have just been showing off!

A Cabin in the WoodsImagine a quiet, secluded get-away spot, hidden under a lush, green canopy of forested acres, providing you with a respite for body and mind. Sound like a dream? It is a dream you can experience at Arbuckle Valley Cabins.

These newly renovated cabins are a piece of history that has been furnished with all the modern amenities. Prior to 1960, this land was part of a Nazarene Church Camp and you can almost hear the voices echoing through this valley. The camp was abandoned and uncared for over many years, becoming overgrown. Gary Fullerton dreamed of owning it and made several unsuccessful offers. Finally, persistence paid off and he and wife Kaye became owners. It took some heavy equipment to plow through weeds and vines to see what they had purchased and discover this diamond-in-the-rough.

After years of labor and love, the rock and log cabins are providing a resting spot for guests. Large decks provide a place to enjoy the qui-et. Each cabin sleeps up to 4, has kitchenettes, satellite TV, fire pits and grills and is smoke-free. Contact the Fullertons to reserve your dream spot. 580-369-0586 or www.arbucklevalleycabins.com. u

Eat at Mama’s PlaceIf your meals consist of things coming through your car window or

some factory-to-freezer-to-microwave feasts, then you need to stop

by Mama D’s on your vacation. Darlene has been cooking in the

Arbuckle area, for many years. Her fans know that good eats flow

from her kitchen. So, do as the locals do and stop in for breakfast

or lunch.

Nouveau Cuisine is not what you will find at Mama D’s. For

breakfast, expect bacon, eggs, hash browns, biscuit and gravy or

if you are not from the south, have a piece of buttered white toast.

Heck, if you are not from the south, be adventurous and try the

biscuits and gravy! If that is not your style, have a stack of pancakes

or a made-to-order omelet.

For lunch, choices range from real hamburgers with fresh-meat

patties and toppings that go way beyond cheese to Philly cheese

steak, BLT, a Club Sandwich and more. Order some fresh, hand-cut,

French fries that will put those frozen, fast-food sticks to shame.

Maybe a plate lunch is what you are looking for. Try hand-breaded

chicken-fried steak, meatloaf or the Cook’s Choice special.

No matter what you pick, a great meal awaits you. Mama D’s is

located inside The Fillin’ Station, where you will find hot and

cold drinks, snacks, gas (for your car, not from the food) and local

information. Stop by 1628 W. Broadway in Sulphur or

call 580-622-6606. u

Meet Friends & Catch the Game at Raina’sFolks stroll into Raina’s Sports Lounge knowing they will be met by

friendly faces and a relaxed atmosphere. This is a great gathering

place for friends to have a drink and catch the latest games.

Raina Valkoun, owner, has a special saying about her place.

“Bought by a woman, designed by a woman, for women… the men

will come!” And from looking around, she must be right. There is a

nice mix of patrons visiting, laughing, and having a bite to eat.

Speaking of a bite to eat, there is plenty to choose from coming from

the kitchen. Try wings & things, nachos, fries or onion rings. Need

more choices? Consider sliders, Edamame, jalapeno poppers or

fried pickles.

In addition to the big screens for entertainment, you will enjoy live

music on many weekend nights. Raina’s showcases some wonderful

talent, much of it local, and has a dance floor so you can work off

some of the aforementioned pub food. This is a smoke-free facility

and free wi-fi is available. You must be 21 to enter Raina’s, which is

located at 201 W. Muskogee, downtown Sulphur, 580-622-2014. u

Turner Falls Park, the oldest park in Oklahoma, has received national publicity and has served as a classroom for the naturalist. Many springs from the world famous Arbuckle Mountains form Honey Creek, which cascades down a seventy-seven (77) foot fall to a natural swimming pool, making the majestic Turner Falls the largest waterfall in Oklahoma. The park is accented with beautiful picnic areas, natural trails, caves, geological wonders and two natural swimming pools unique in nature.

The Turner Falls area has been described as one of the three geological windows into our past. The Grand Canyon and the Black Hills of South Dakota are the other two areas that hold this unique distinction.

As early as 1868, Turner Falls was known as a popular recreational area. The City of Davis operates the park and you are welcome to enjoy the 720 acres of fun in the “Heart of the Arbuckle Mountain.”

When you visit the Turner Falls area, you are exploring the natural wonder of Oklahoma. Some describe it as a diamond in the rough, while others describe it as the “Gem of the Arbuckles.”

Camping is available for those who wish to experience a closeness to one of God’s greatest gifts to nature.

Plans are never ending at Turner Falls, with the planning board working to develop even more attractions.

Visit Turner Falls Park and experience the hospitality of Arbuckle Moutain Area. The whole family will appreciate the clean and safe outdoor fun the park has to offer.

Where can you take the kids and let them work off some of that excess energy while you sit and chill a while? Sounds like a trip to Jump Around is just what you need.

One of Sulphur’s newest attractions offers great fun and activities for the younger members of the family, all in a climate-controlled setting. Large inflatables will keep them bouncing and sliding while a rock wall will have them testing out their climbing skills. A pool table and arcade will provide an opportunity for the rest of the family to join in.

Jump Around has a concession for a break in the activities or to add to that chill time for mom and dad. Private parties can be booked and would be a great addition to a family reunion weekend or birthday celebration. To check on hours of operation or other information, call 580-622-6073. Since opening in 2010, the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, OK has welcomed more than 230,000 visitors from across the world. In 2014, the cultural center was named a top national attraction by CNN Travel. The international media outlet listed the Chickasaw Cultural Center as a “must see” Oklahoma destination in the on-line article, “50 states, 50 spots for 2014,” which was posted on CNN.com/travel on January 2nd.

“To welcome 2014, CNN is offering a travel suggestion for each of the 50 states. From some of the country's most glorious national parks to arts festivals and cowboy culture, we've got you covered,” CNN Travel reporter Katia Hetter writes in the article.

The Chickasaw Cultural Center is named along with iconic destinations such as Yosemite (California), Grand Canyon (Arizona), the Boston Marathon (Massachusetts), the Jersey Shore (New Jersey) and One World Trade Center (New York).

Walk through the Removal Corridor to see the bleak journey of the Chickasaw Nation to Oklahoma. Experience their hardships at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, a space that allows visitors to follow the Chickasaw Nation's pre-Oklahoma life through today. The center, which opened in 2010 and sits on more than 100 acres of Chickasaw land in Sulphur, offers visitors the opportunity to see traditional dwellings, join a stomp dance's inner circle and taste Chickasaw

traditional foods at the Aaimpa' Café, where grape dumplings, Indian fry bread and pishofa (a dish made of hominy and pork similar to corn soup) are served.

With showcases, interactive media stations and hands-on classes, the Cultural Center has consciously departed from the traditional museum "displays-under-glass" format to provide visitors with a deep connection to Chickasaw culture. It is an interactive museum designed to allow visitors to truly experience the living history and culture of the Chickasaw people.

is located just off

Interstate 35 at exit 51,

only two miles from

another of nature’s

wonders, Turner Falls.

Exit 51 is less than two hours from the Dallas

Metroplex and about an hour south of Oklahoma City. The park has

undergone considerable renovations with new habitats, educational

programs, attractions, and animals.

A scenic drive through the animal park starts your adventure. The

park is filled with exotic animals from all over the world. Feed the free

roaming animals from the comfort of your vehicle or take a guided

tour on our safari buses (requires a minimum).

After you drive through, park your car and continue to our walk-thru

area. Here you will find an array of animals and the petting zoo. In

addition, our amusement area includes go karts, moon bounces,

bumper cars, and more. Make a stop at our reptile house for a close

look. Take in the adventures of the Gem & Fossil Mining Mill and pan

for your own treasure. If it is time for a break, why not enjoy snacks

and drinks in the walk-thru park. Afterwards, have fun shopping in the largest safari-themed gift store in the region. Featured are an in-credible array of souvenirs, handcrafted Indian artifacts, educational gifts, stuffed animals, t-shirts, jewelry and much more.

Group programs are available for school and family groups, organi-zations, fund raising events, corporate picnics, birthday parties and more. Your group outing will include a safari bus ride through the park, an all-you-can-eat cookout, outdoor recreational activities at the pavilion and time at the walk-thru park and amusement area. Groups require only a 25-person minimum and arrangements can be made through our sales and marketing department.

Admission fees vary based upon the program chosen. Our general admission price is only $16.99 for adults and $14.99 for children ages 3 to 11. Children under 3 are free. This includes both the safari drive-thru and the walk-thru and amusement area. We offer a military discount with a military ID. Seniors (over 55) save a buck on admissions. Go karts, bumper boats and moon bounce and bumper cars are seasonal and have additional charges. RV sites and cab-ins are also available. Whatever its form, water has always been the attraction at Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Freshwater springs attract a variety of wildlife. Mineral springs were once sought for medicinal qualities. Travertine Creek and Rock Creek beckon waders and swimmers. Veterans Lake calls to fishermen to test their skills. Lake of the Arbuckles, the park’s dominant feature, provides excellent motor boating, skiing, sailing, fishing, and swimming. The springs are formed when water passes through underground rock formations. The water is then forced upward through fissures in the rock layers. Some rock layers contain sulphur and bromine; water coming through these layers collects the minerals and becomes mineral water. Water passing through rock layers that do not contain these minerals remains fresh.

Archeologists believe that this area may have been inhabited for as long as 7,000 years. The ancient people called this place “The Peaceful Valley of Rippling Waters.” They believed in the healing power of the strong-smelling mineral water. The Caddos, Comanches, Chickasaws and Choctaws came later for the refreshing liquid. In 1855, the lands became part of the Chickasaw Nation.

White pioneers gradually drifted into the Chickasaw Nation and built a community in the late 1800s. A town formed around what is now Pavilion Springs and was named Sulphur. Fearing the springs might suffer from uncontrolled use, the Chickasaw Nation agreed with the Federal Government to create a national park. In 1902, 640 acres were transferred to the United States and given the name of Sulphur Springs Reservation. In 1906, the area was renamed Platt National Park in honor of Senator Orville Hitchcock Platt. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built pavilions and roads, laid out trails, engineered waterfalls, and planted half a million trees and shrubs. In 1976 Platt National Park was combined with Arbuckle Recreation Area and additional lands to create a new national recreation area in honor of the land’s longtime inhabitant: the Chickasaws. u

So, You Want To Be A Superhero?Calling all Original Superheroes! Jump out of your phone booths, kick your imagination into overdrive, and prepare to save the world... or at least get together with your fellow crusaders. Who will be the collaborator of your efforts? None other than the Toy & Action Figure Museum of Pauls Valley, OK.

The Museum will be hosting the annual International Superhero Day in October 2014 and is having one of the largest gatherings of original superheroes at one time. Batman and Spider-Man need not attend; this event is purely for one-of-a-kind, create-your-own superheroes. What would your superhero’s name be? What costume best represents you? What would your super powers be? What is your mission? Think it over, make a plan, take action and show up for a day of celebration and revelry.

Past International Superhero Day events have included a Super Style Show, Save the Baby Obstacle Course, Super Scavenger Hunt and plenty of photo opportunities. Be sure to take part in the group photo of all your crime fighting buddies. Please check for the exact date in October and registration forms. For more information, contact the Toy & Action Figure Museum at www.actionfiguremuseum.com or 405-238-6300 or drop in for a visit at 111 S. Chickasaw in Pauls Valley.

One of my favorite things to do at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is to take walks along the beautiful trails. The fresh air and the chirping birds always seem so calming and peaceful. Sometimes, if you’re quiet enough, you’ll come across a small group of deer munching on some grass, or a woodpecker thudding on a dead tree.

In the springtime, Redbuds put off hundreds of tiny pink flowers that fill the woods with vibrant color. In the fall, the trees turn a wide variety of rich hues, such as orange, yellow, and red.

There are also little streams trickling next to some of the trails, where shiny minnows gleam under the surface. On hot summer days, I like to take off my flip-flops and stick my toes in the icy water as I watch the birds flutter from branch to branch, chattering excitedly to each other.

Other times, it’s nice to just walk, listening to the rhythmic crunch of the gravel beneath my feet. There’s something almost magical about the place, with sunlight streaming through the treetops and the thick green clover carpeting the forest floor.

Sometimes, we hike up Bromide Hill, where you can look out over the land which spreads as far as the eye can see. The sky appears to be a giant blue dome that stretches overhead, never ending. Tree branches reach towards the sky, as if they want to touch the clouds.

If you’ve never seen the night sky while sitting on the shore of the lake, then I highly suggest that you put it on your list of things to do. The sun

turns into a glowing orange ball, suspend-ed just above the horizon, and the water shimmers pink and purple. As darkness starts to take over, the sky turns pitch black, and millions of stars burn brightly, illuminating the lake. It’s absolutely stunning, standing under the huge, open universe.

When you think about it, it’s really amazing how God placed every plant and animal just so, creating such an incredible and fascinating world for us to enjoy. Everything from the smallest insect to the tallest mountain, made just for you and me.

With the combination of gorgeous scenery and abundant wildlife, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is truly a wonderful place to visit. Come and see for yourself.

The Arbuckle Area is home to several running events and considering the lay of the land, that is not surprising. From the beginner, just starting to explore the challenge of racing, to the long-term “runner’s high” junkie, the diverse terrain of the Arbuckles offers something for everyone.

Listed below are a few area events with contact information. All are certified and most coincide with additional events in the community, which makes for a fun outing for the entire family. With so much to see and do in the region, plan a get-away weekend along with your run. Most of the races also have a kids run or fun run included. That is a great way to encourage fitness for the younger set and every physical activity level.

For more than forty years, East Side Liquor has been serving the residents and visitors of Murray County. Leon Frost, a life-long citizen of Sulphur, opened the store in the 70s. He was once a part of the C.C.C. that built many of the structures in the National Park and his ties to the area were always strong. It was only natural to invest in the area by growing a business.

East Side Liquor was originally located on First Street in Sulphur, currently the site of the Artesian Hotel. He operated there for several years, on the boundary of the historic downtown. But Mr. Frost al-ways had his eye on another property, across town on the west side, and at the city’s ONLY traffic light. When it finally went up for sale, he scraped together the funds and made his move. His small store grew, gained great visibility, and became known as East Side Liquor... over on the west side! Today the shop is still going strong and is operated by extended family.

East Side Liquor is the largest package store in the county. Every day is Veterans Day with a 10% discount when you present your service card. On Wine Wednesday, seniors receive 10% discount on their great selections. The store has wide range of beers for all seasons, from the light and crisp for summer to the darker, heavier autumn

choices. Be sure to look for the summer specials and items that are ice chest ready. See Randy for special orders.

On your visit to the Arbuckles, shop East Side Liquor for your pack-age store needs. Find them at 12th & Broadway, on the west side of Sulphur or call 580-622-5345. u

From formal to shabby chic, art in many forms comes to life in Sulphur’s Artists of the Arbuckles Gallery. Newly renamed the Jean Carr Gallery, the Artists’ mission is “to advance the arts and encourage creativity”. This active group is certainly capable of that.

Not surprisingly, the gallery walls are adorned with pastels, oils and water color paintings. But the Gallery goes beyond the “expected” with displays of many art forms. From time to time, you will find showings of members’ hand-made quilts or high quality photography. Other exhibits may consist of stained gourds decorated with feathers, antlers and shells. Native Oklahoma woods are also a medium used to create tree ornaments, vases and bowls. In addition, painted and decorated furniture – some antique and some unique – is occasionally showcased.

A short walk from the Gallery is the downtown plaza and a mural depicting Sulphur’s historic past. The Artists of the Arbuckles were instrumental in producing the bigger-than-life painting depicting buildings and life in the Sulphur of yesterday. Bordered on the mural are cattle brands identifying area ranches.

The Jean Carr Gallery is located at 330 W. Muskogee St. It is a free gallery open to the public, and occasional classes and shows are featured. For gallery hours, call 580-622-

6689 or 622-3214. u

RV Camping Additions in the ArbucklesThe Arbuckle Mountain area is an increasingly popular place for RV campers and those travelers have a multitude of very accommodating sites to choose from. Two additional parks are Rowdy’s RV Ranch be-tween Davis and Sulphur and T & R RV Resort near Pauls Valley.

At Rowdy’s RV Ranch, you can expect to hear the birds singing and maybe even a distant coyote in the night. Located on Shepherd Road, it is quiet and peaceful. The 13 sites have 110/30/50 amp, water, sewer, picnic tables, grills and wi-fi. At Rowdy’s, your home on wheels will be across from Chickasaw National Recreation Area’s Blue Stem Prairie region. This section is not as highly visited, which is great for wildlife watching, fishing, hiking and, in season, hunting. Two boat ramps are within very short distances. You can enjoy the quiet of the country while being close to conveniences. Long term campers receive a discount. Contact Rowdy’s at 580-622-6555 or www.rowdysrvranch.com.

If you want to be a bit further north, park your rig at T & R RV Resort near Pauls Valley. This location offers easy on & off access to I-35 at exit 70. The folks at T & R worked hard and planned well to build a park that offers guests a wide range of amenities. All sites are full hook-up and pull-thru with concrete pads. They have a shower house, laundry, cable, and wi-fi. All bills are paid and they are pet-friendly. In a short drive, you will be in Pauls Valley where you will find restaurants, shopping, muse-ums, golfing and great bass fishing…and let’s not forget the noodling! Whether passing through, enjoying a weekend visit or working in the area, T & R looks forward to your stay. Contact them at 405-331-9070 or www.trrvresortok.com. u

Groups Gather at Texoma Christian CampFrom the grounds of Texoma Christian Camp, you see the blue waters of Lake Texoma lapping the rocky shore. A short stroll through the wooded grove and you are at the water’s edge. The peace that is experienced here makes the rest of the world fall away.

T.C.C. is a very special place for people to come together, whether you are assembling for work, play or maybe a little of both. The Camp has capabilities for lodging 100 guests with heated and cooled build-ings, a commercial kitchen, and a lodge with dual fireplace. Outdoors is where this camp really shines. Gather at the pavilion, take a dip in the pool, walk nature trails or hit the outdoor game area. If you need to quiet your mind, sit a spell at the vespers area and gaze out into the lake or walk the labyrinth.

Texoma Christian Camp is well suited for family reunions, corporate retreats or just about any group gatherings. This rustic setting with all modern amenities continues to do what it has done best for many years…serve people and make memories. Bring your group and make memories at T.C.C. located outside of Kingston, OK. Contact them at 580-564-2630 or visit www.texomachristiancamp.com. u

Close your eyes. Imagine. Listen. Hear the bird’s song... so close by. The wind whistles and the sun shines through the leaves. You are far above the fields, creek, and critters below, safe in your treehouse shelter. The peace soothes your soul. Suddenly, the realization comes... you haven’t been this calm in a long time. This moment could be a reality during a stay at Rock Creek Retreat.

The business plan for Rock Creek Retreat sprouted from a long-held dream of Pam Staggs and Cara Biggs. The search for the perfect piece of land was long; the development has been longer…but quite an adventure, a test and a great joy as their vision unfolds. Now they are sharing the beginnings of their creation with guests looking for a respite.

The Retreat offers the fun of having that lofty treehouse view combined with all the creature comforts we desire as adults. Rather than climb branches, count on the sturdy staircase for access. Likewise for your exit, or you may want to try a glide on the slide or the fire pole!

Two cabins are available with decks for woodland and wildlife viewing. The smallest unit is the Flying Penny, named for its gleaming copper siding. Cozy lodging for 2 and a microwave/fridge make a sweet retreat for solitude. The Copper Cabana will sleep up to 6, offers a full kitchen, and a sitting area. Both cabins have TV/DVD but it is highly recommended that you hide them from the kids and enjoy your surroundings.

As with most tree houses, a full bathroom is not possible. Not to worry; the ladies have constructed a climate-controlled, clean and well-kept shower house with separate facilities for men and women, and all

linens furnished.

Speaking of the surroundings, Rock Creek is just outside your door and you are encircled by 100 acres of outdoor adventure. There is hiking, bird and wildlife viewing, and even an old bridge to explore, all making great photo opportunities. Join others around the fire pit in the evening.

112 Healey Rd. (1 Block North of Dougherty Store and

Hwy 110 & Healey Rd. intersection)Downtown Dougherty, America

Rock Creek Retreat is nestled in the very heart of the Arbuckle Mountains outside of the tiny town of Dougherty. The Washita River and the railroad run along the edge and played a large part in settling the burg in pre-statehood. Its storied past earned it a tough reputation but life is different here now. Quiet and secluded, not a lot goes on…and that is just how the natives like it!

You won’t find much in Dougherty; a Post Office, a Senior Citizen Center and the Dougherty Store. And, you won’t find a store like this in Dallas. You can get your gas, groceries, and a fresh deli sandwich. Sit at the table with the locals and get an ear full of gossip, politics or air your own dirty laundry. Oh, and speaking of laundry, you might as well do yours while you are here ‘cause this is also the Laundromat!

When you fall in love with Dougherty, you may want to linger a while. That is good because Rock Creek Retreat is the perfect place to slow down and rest a while. Contact them at 469-556-4903 or search Facebook for info. If you are in your RV, the Dougherty RV Park is where you want to go. Call 580-993-2735 or 580-465-3768. u

The Arbuckle Mountain Area offers year round activities and one of the most popular winter events is the Bald Eagle Watch. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area’s Arbuckle Lake and Lake Murray State Park are both excellent locations to observe these majestic, once endangered, birds in the wild.

Since 2007, Bald Eagles are no longer on the endangered list. Due to combined efforts of protection from many private citizens, elected officials, and government agencies, the eagle has come back from the edge of extinction. This increase in population allows us the privilege of viewing them in their natural state.

Migration from the north begins in mid-November until mid-March. The eagle, as with most birds, looks for water to live by. Cold weather and frozen water sources in the northern United States send bald eagles flying south. The extreme winter conditions of 2013/14 may have accounted for an increased number of sightings in the Arbuckle Area.

Eagles mate for life and the female is larger than the male. They have small numbers of young and the females tend to stay in the nest with them. There is estimated to be about 100 nesting pairs of eagles in Oklahoma.

In the Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA), there are 2 park-led Eagle Watch events each year in January. The morning begins at 9 a.m. at the Travertine Nature Center with an introduction about eagles and a short video. Then the group caravans to Arbuckle Lake. The Buckhorn Area on the east side of the lake, is said to be a great birding spot and Ranger Ron Parker says that about 200 different bird species have been spotted there.

In southern Oklahoma, the turkey vulture is often mistaken for eagles due to their size. Ranger Dan Winings says “Eagles fly with their wings flat, but vultures’ wings form a V shape.” He added that the mature Bald Eagles have white heads and tail tips.

At Lake Murray State Park, February and March of 2014 brought quite an increase in sightings. At the south end of the lake, numerous mature eagles and several small, younger birds were observed. A recent group of birders went out in a boat so they would have the advantage of 360 degree viewing. In that trip they spotted 12 eagles. The terrain

and availability of water draws the birds for long winter stays and Park Manager and Naturalist Richard Keithley says viewings and numbers of the American Bald Eagle has continued to escalate since the 1990s.

“If you want to see eagles, head straight to the dam at Lake Murray”, Keithley said. “It would be difficult not to see one.” Keithley has served at both Lake Murray and Lake Texoma State Parks. He commented that watching the eagles was quite an experience.

For more information on in-season Eagle Watches, contact the CNRA at 580-622-7234 or www.nps.gov/chic. For Lake Murray State Park

Pauls Valley, OK is a beautiful little city

nestled in the basin of the Washita River.

Established in 1857, the town grew and

prospered with the addition of the railroad

in 1887. The quaint downtown, with its

brick streets, has been named a Main Street

City and is a Nationally Registered Historic

District.

An abundance of attractions and festivals

make this town a delightful stop for visitors.

Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer makes daily

stops in Pauls Valley on its journey between

Oklahoma City and Fort Worth at the Santa Fe Depot. This 1905 structure was saved

from demolition in 1989 and has gone

from boarded up eyesore to a jewel of the

downtown and serves as the Santa Fe Depot Museum. Now housing a collection of

photos, memorabilia and pioneer artifacts,

the museum also has a steam locomotive,

coal tender and vintage red caboose just

outside.

The Toy and Action Figure Museum is a

unique opportunity for guests of all ages.

For the kids, a trip into the fantasy world of

cartoon and super hero characters is alive

and in full color. For the young at heart,

this is a blissful stroll down memory lane.

The displays show how action figures

come to be, from conception through

manufacturing. The younger set will

particularly enjoy the hands on play room.

Be sure to save time to stroll the brick

streets and get a bit of shopping in.

Several quaint shops are stocked with

all of the expected and some of the totally unexpected. Put on your treasure hunting cap and “take to the bricks” for a lovely shopping experience. If you work up an appetite, a variety of cafes and restaurants offer plenty of dishes to please.

Plan a trip to Pauls Valley. Plan on family fun and great times, but don’t plan on the ordinary. Pauls Valley... not your ordinary small town. u

Swimmers of all ages will be able to find a way to cool off in the pool’s variety of features. Children will have fun with the toddler catfish slide and find endless hours of fun on the zero beach entry pool’s water playground. The playground structure will have slides, sprays and huge tipping bucket. Teens will enjoy the body slides and the bowl slide. The bowl slide is a water ride that circles riders around 2-4 times before dropping them into an 8-foot pool of water. Other features the entire family will enjoy include a lazy river, a three lane lap pool with a diving board, plenty of shade umbrellas, lounge chairs, a picnic area and the all-important snack bar.

Peach (pech) (according to Webster’s) a round, juicy, orange-yellow fruit having fuzzy skin and a rough pit; (according to citizens of Strat-ford, OK) a very sweet treat, pure juicy joy on a hot day, the perfect accessory to lots of other foods, a fine reason to have a celebration in the middle of summer... we call it the Stratford Peach Festival!

Stratford is known as the Peach Capital of Oklahoma and specialists from Oklahoma State University have declared area peaches to be the highest quality. Today there are approximately 900 acres of peach orchards in the Stratford region. The Festival has been going on since 1976 and is the city’s main event each year. The Peach Auction is a major fund-raiser for the Chamber of Commerce and brings about some good-natured bantering.

Lots of family fun is available at the Stratford Peach Festival. For the love of everything peach, check out the food booths. Of course you will find fresh peaches, in addition to fried peach pies, peach ice cream, peach jams and the list goes on. Not to worry, the menu also includes Indian tacos, Mexican, burgers and hot dogs as well as got-to-have fair food like cotton candy, popcorn, soft drinks and snow cones. Lots of choice, lots of food…bring out the Rolaids!

If your family has never been to an old-time county fair, then check out the games section. You won’t find any electronics here. Some of these games will take some team building, like the 3-legged sack race, and some will have you in competition, like the decorated turtle race or “money in the hay” or a game of horseshoes.

Other events during the Stratford Peach Festival are the Classic Car Show, the Peach Cook-off, the Arts and Crafts Show and the Peach Judging. If you need a birds-eye view of the hap-penings, try a helicopter ride. Oh yea, move over American Idol because a great part of this festival is the Peach Idol Contest. You will enjoy some great (and some outrageously brave) live entertainment as entrants compete. Catch a seat; you won’t want to miss this.

Be sure to catch the concert this year featuring Mike Mc-Clure and Zane Williams, names that are becoming increas-ingly popular. Better come early; there is sure to be a crowd. It seems these artists have quite a following.

This year’s Peach Festival will be held on Saturday, July 19th starting with free breakfast at 7am until everyone is too tired to celebrate any more... which could be late. People never get tired of these peaches! Events are held at the Stratford City Park, which is 4 blocks east of the

Hwy 19&177 intersection to Hyden, then ½ mile south. For information, updates and registrations search www.facebook.com/stratfordokareachamberofcommerce. u

Ardmore Welcomes... The Lexington InnIn the game of lodging, a new player has come to town. Just as a scout has a good eye for potential greatness, guests to The Lexington Inn of Ardmore are applauding this contestant as an indisputable rising star.

The Lexington brand is new to Oklahoma, but not a novice. Founded in 2007, they fall into the upper midscale segment with a mission “to offer a memorable lodging experience for the business and leisure traveler with an emphasis on delighting our guests with superior customer service and conveniences.”

The owners of The Lexington Inn of Ardmore are not novices to the lodging business either. Marvin and Dora Polzien came to the area in 1973 to purchase their first property, The Guest Inn of Ardmore. In 2004, daughter Julie Brady joined them.

Visitors to the Lexington Inn sense a difference right away. Being locally owned means that the care and service offered is not usually seen in “chain” hotels. Attention to detail and amenities provided ensure a quality stay for their guests. The entire facility has undergone complete renovation in early 2014. There are 42 rooms, 11 suites and 2 fully equipped kitchenettes available. Rooms are beautifully appointed, have all new bedding and linens, flat screen TVs and microwave and refrigerator in each room. In addition, high-security RFID locks have been placed on all guest room doors. There is a pool, business center, free wi-fi, and fitness center. In the morning, enjoy a deluxe breakfast with waffles, biscuits and gravy, fruit and more... with a little something different every day.

For convenience, there is a guest laundry, always hot coffee in the lobby, the Grab ‘n Go Market, and the Inn is pet-friendly. For reservation and information, contact The Lexington Inn at 580-223-7525 or www.LexingtonInnArdmore.com. Find them at Exit 31 A off I-35, then north on east side service road (136 Holiday Dr.) u

Brews, Burgers, and Brats at Red Dirt Brewhouse“A great, relaxed atmosphere.” “Super selection of beers.” “Our family’s favorite place to eat.” “It’s Farmhouse beer, food and fun…what’s better than that?” “Where else will you find a Smothered Bratzel?” Comments like these are what you hear from the patrons at Red Dirt Brewhouse.

The Brewhouse is the place to fulfill the adage “Eat, Drink and be Merry!” Join Justin and his Red Dirt Crew for good times and great eats. Looking for fast food burgers or regular pub food? This is not your place. This is pub food with a creative twist, highlighted with items like the On Fire Burger, the Whole Pig, or the Mill Street Gumbo... a highly-guarded secret recipe.

You’ve got to have something to wash that food down and variety is the ticket at the Brewhouse. The tap wall offers 27 beers including Lagers, Ales, Stouts and so much more. The difficult chore will be choosing where to start.

So, what are you waiting for? Get to the Red Dirt Brewhouse and pull up to a table. Whet your appetite at www.reddirtbrewhouse.com, where you will also find the schedule for live music events. Find them at 24 Mill St in downtown Ardmore or call

Paradise on the Water

Lake Murray Resort Park is Oklahoma’s first state park. It is named after one of Oklahoma’s early governors, William H. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray. The park is home to Tucker Tower Museum, newly renovated and being used to tell the story of the building of the park by C.C.C. and W.P.A workmen. The new Nature Center opened in 2013 with exhibits about the water, natural and cultural history, and green living.

The land for Lake Murray Resort Park was acquired in 1933. Lake Murray Dam was completed in 1937 with Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Projects Administration labor. You can still see the original CCC stone structures scattered around the park.

In 1949, Oklahoma’s first state lodge was built at Lake Murray State Park. Today, Lake Murray Lodge is still a relaxing and comfortable getaway for the entire family. With 52 rooms and deluxe suites, the lodge offers a country inn atmosphere.

Eighty cottages are within walking distance of the lodge and have been recently renovated. Most have kitchenettes, fireplaces and color televisions, and sleep two to eight people. Three larger Heritage cottages sleep six, ten or twelve people.

Lake Murray Resort Park is Oklahoma’s largest state park with 12,496 lush, wooded acres. Lake Murray itself is 5,728 surface acres with 150 miles of state-owned shoreline. The lake offers a beautiful setting for a variety of activities.

Lake Murray Resort Park is a camper’s paradise with 468 RV and tent sites. The park also features three group camps, each with a community center with cooking facilities.

Finding fun things to do at Lake Murray Resort Park is easy. Finding time to do everything might be a problem. Several swimming and picnicking areas are marked and the lake’s beautiful water is popular among scuba divers from both near and far.

For maximum golf, Lake Murray’s beautiful and challenging 18-hole golf course features a full-line pro shop, driving range and putting green.

Lake Murray Resort Park is conveniently located off I-35 at exits 24 or 29. For information on Lake Murray’s many activities, call the park office at (580) 223-4044. Visit us on the web at www.oklahomaparks.com. u

Hours: Tue-Thu 11am-11pmFri-Sat 11am-Midnight

Walk through the doors of the Gene Autry, OK Museum and you’ll be carried away to a time when men were men, women were women and the west was truly wild. Back to a time when a singing cowboy rode in on his trusty steed, saved the day, kissed the lady, and galloped off into the sunset. No blood and guts, no sex, no R ratings. Just blissful happy endings. Those were the glory days!

The Museum, located in the old Gene Autry School building, has been open since 1990. Elvin and Flo Sweeten have gathered an awesome collection of memorabilia of the “Singing Cowboy’s” movies and music. From photos and costumes to props, old movie posters, personal items and artifacts, it’s all here. These archives will be enjoyed by everyone, from the Internet generation through those “youngsters” old enough to remember Saturday movies for a nickel.

The building also displays history of the town before and after its official name change in 1941. A decision was made to name the city after their new neighbor, a movie star that purchased ranch land to set up headquarters for his rodeo road show.

On your visit, be sure to visit the Blue Rooster Gift Shop. They offer an assortment of gifts and souvenirs, as well as antiques and collectibles. Inquire about membership to the Museum. The Museum is open March-Nov, Mon-Sat from 10am to 4pm. At 47 Prairie St., no admission but donations are accepted.

For more information, call (580)294-3047 or visit www.geneautryokmuseum.com.

A visit to the Greater Southwest Historical Museum will open a door into south-central Oklahoma’s history. The Museum is housed in Ardmore’s former Oklahoma National Guard Armory, a native sandstone building constructed by the WPA in 1936. Within these walls, you will find exhibits detailing the area’s history from the mid-1800s to the present.

The Museum tells the fascinating story of human settlement in the Arbuckles, from early Native Americans to the farmers, ranchers and townspeople who built strong communities in the region.

When you think of the days of the pioneers, an image of covered wagons, one-room schoolhouses, general stores, log cabins and a simpler way of life comes to mind. That is exactly what you will find. There are exhibits throughout the 30,000 square foot building, ranging from the Eaves-Brady Cabin, built in 1892, to one of the first electric cars used in this region.

Two other museums are located here; the Military Memorial Museum and the Carter County Genealogical Society Library. Step into history during your vacation. The G.S.H.M is open Tue-Sat from 10am-5pm. There is no admission but donations are accepted. 35 Sunset Dr., I-35 exit 31A, then 1 mile east, (580)226-3857 www.gshm.org. u

One of the most popular destinations in southern Oklahoma is the Goddard Center for Visual & Performing Arts where this is always something to keep you entertained. When the smiling staff says there is something for everyone, they really mean it. From nationally recognized musical performances, to children’s theater, art exhibitions and hands-on art classes... they really do have it all. With major support from the Oklahoma Arts Council and local underwriters, this cultural gem continues to shine brightly from the heart of downtown Ardmore.

This year’s performance season will kick off in August 2014 with Oklahoma’s own JD McPherson, a throwback to the American 1950’s with influences like Little Richard and Fats Domino. A favorite at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, McPherson was named an “Artist to Watch” by Rolling Stone Magazine. In October 2014, the Tulsa Ballet II will travel to Ardmore for an evening of beautifully choreographed dance.

The 2014 December Holiday performances at the Goddard will feature an evening of favorite Christmas music by pianist Mac Frampton followed by a children’s Christmas musical, “Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells” presented by Casa Mañana Theater out of Fort Worth, Texas.

For classical enthusiasts, guitarist Brad Richtor will perform in January 2015. For some St. Patrick’s Day fun, get your tickets for a concert by A.J Croce who is carrying on the musical tradition passed down to him from his famous music roots. To round out the season, Casa Mañana Theater will return with the children’s musical, “Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale.”

The Goddard Center is located just one block south of Main St. at 401 1st Ave. SW in Ardmore. Performance prices for the general public are $20 for adults and $10 for students. The art galleries are always free and open to the public. The Center is open Tues.-Fri. 9am-5pm and Sat. 1-4pm. The phone number is 580- 226-0909 and you will find more info on performances, exhibits and art classes at www.goddardcenter.org. u
