OUR GOAL: 70% BY 2015 Richmond’s goal is to reduce garbage by 70% and since the launch of the Green Cart program, residents have significantly stepped up their organics recycling. When compared to the same period in 2012, the amount of food scraps and yard trimmings recycling has increased by more than 61%.
This is excellent progress, and the City is building on this success with a new pilot program to expand Green Cart recycling to residents in apartments and multi-level complexes.

sierra Waste services will contact you to provide a pick up date and confirmation number.
on your scheduled pick up date only, place items at the curb before 7:30 a.m. or no earlier than 8:00 p.m. the night before.

GREEN CART TIPS Place cart at the curb by 7:30 a.m. and no earlier than 8:00 p.m. the night before to ensure pick up.
To prevent odours:
• sprinkle baking soda in your cart• Wash your can/cart regularly with mild
environmentally friendly solution• Freeze meat in newspaper or cereal boxes
until collection day• Wrap food scraps in newspaper, paper bags
or used paper towels
ensure branches do not extend beyond the top of the container. They must be less than 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter.
Use paper yard waste bags and/or Green Cans for extra yard trimmings. For program requirements visit www.richmond.ca/greencart.
hARVEST POWERRichmond was proud to be recognized by Harvest Power with a Golden Shovel Award for its environmental leadership and stewardship. The City sends its food scraps and yard trimmings to Harvest Power, located in Richmond, where these recyclable materials are composted and used by farmers, gardeners and landscapers for nutrient-rich soil. Harvest Power also extracts the waste heat from the composting process and turns it into electricity for clean energy.
Up to 2 per house

Additional Garbage Tags are $2 each

FUTURE OUTLOOKThe City will be looking at options for providing carts (similar to Green Carts) for garbage in future. Incentive-based programs may also be considered in order to promote increased recycling to meet targets for reduced waste going to the landfill.

DID YOU KNOW?Food scraps, oils and grease should never be disposed down sinks, drains or garburators as the material congeals and builds up on the inside of sewage lines, causing blockages.
