2014 Gamecocks Soccer6

Neil Macdonald begins his second season as head coach of the Jacksonville State soccer program and has already begun to lay the groundwork for the program that he envisions.

Macdonald named the third head coach in JSU’s soccer pro-

gram in February of 2013. The Gamecocks finished with a 4-13-2 overall mark, but the he saw bright spots throughout his first season on the Jax State side. The Macdonald Era got off to a good start by claiming the season opener at McNeese State. It marked the first time JSU won its season-opening contest since the 2000 season. Jax State also won Macdonald’s home debut with a 4-0 blanking of in-state foe Alabama A&M. The four goals scored in the match was a sea-son high for the Gamecocks.

His squad returned to the pitch the following Friday to do something that has not been done in three seasons – beat in-state nemesis Troy. Then-freshman Mackenzie Bellows connected on the game-winning goal in double overtime to post the 1-0 result.

After being battle tested in the non-conference slate, the Gamecocks put forth a valiant effort against Ohio Valley Conference sides. The 2013 squad dropped a tough 2-1 extra time affair to Morehead State and recorded a draw against Tennessee Tech.

Two members of Macdonald’s first JSU squad earned postseason accolades. Jackie Rush, who served as one of the 2013 captains, led by example throughout the first year of the Neil Macdonald era at Jax State. The Trophy Club, Texas-native averaged 4.32 shots per game in 2013 and scored a team-high five goals and 11 total points. A 19-game starter for the Gamecocks in the midfield, Rush was tabbed the OVC’s Offensive Player of the Week after narrowly missing a hat trick against Alabama A&M in September.

For the second-straight year, a Gamecock was repre-sented on the OVC’s All-Newcomer squad as freshman Mackenzie Bellows was voted on the team. Bellows, who came to JSU from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, quickly made an impression on Macdonald from the time she stepped foot on campus as she started all 19 matches.  The midfielder ranked third on the team in points with six after producing a pair of goals and assists.

JSU continued its string of consecutive National Soccer Coaches Association of America Women’s Team Academic Award to five consecutive years and the eighth time in the program’s history. To be eligible for the award, teams must have a team grade point average of 3.0 or better. Jax State turned in a 3.38 GPA, which was the highest among the ten in-state programs that also received the academic team honor – UAB (3.23), Alabama (3.35), Auburn (3.34), Auburn-Montgomery (3.06), Alabama State (3.34), Faulkner

(3.09), South Alabama (3.05), Spring Hill (3.24) and Troy (3.30). JSU was one of eight OVC programs to accom-plish a 3.00 or better in the classroom.

JSU also claimed the OVC’s 2013 Team Sportsmanship Award for soccer. The OVC Team Sportsmanship Award is voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports, the team awards are bestowed upon the Conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsman-ship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff and admin-istrators and fans.

Macdonald has posted a 211-150-21 record during his 16-year coaching career, which includes his first sea-son at JSU last season and the previous nine seasons at Mississippi State.

The Inverness, Scotland, native came to the United States in 1997, where he was four-year starter for Augusta State. Macdonald captained the team during his junior and senior seasons and was also a recipient of a handful of team awards, as well as one conference player of the week accolade. He played and started in every game he was eligible for during his illustrious career in Augusta, and he left the distinguished aca-demic institution as the career record holder in games played and games started.

Macdonald began his coaching career as an assistant at Iowa Central Community College in 1997, where he helped coach both the men’s and women’s soc-cer teams. In his initial season, the women finished the season as regional champions with a 9-3-1 record and featured the nation’s leading scorer at that level. The men’s team also won the regional championship with an impressive 15-4-1 record and a No. 14 national ranking.

Following a 1998 campaign that saw both the Tritons and Lady Tritons march to regional and national rankings, Macdonald was named head coach at ICCC and over the next five seasons, he would guide the men’s team to five regional championships, four times reaching the Sweet 16 of the National Junior College Association of America (NJCAA) national tournament, including his final season in 2002 when the squad advanced through to the Final Four.

Over the same five years, he led the women’s soccer team to the same success as the Lady Tritons won five consecutive regional championships, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in 2002.

During his five-year tenure in Fort Dodge, Macdonald collected an impressive 149-34-5 coaching record. At the conclusion of the 2002 campaigns, he was hon-ored with NJCAA Region Coach of the Year accolades, along with being named one of three finalists for NSCAA National Coach of the Year honors. He was also lauded with Who’s Who of America’s Teachers as well.

Macdonald joined the staff at Mississippi State in 2003 as a volunteer assistant coach and was promoted to a full-time assistant last in the year, and he helped the 2003 squad turn in a program-best 0.86 goals against average. That team finished the year 9-8-3 and record-

ed the program’s first wins over nationally-ranked teams, including a victory over No. 6 Florida.

The next season, Macdonald became head coach of the Bulldogs and became the most-successful rookie head coach in Mississippi State history, taking the team to nine victories and an SEC Tournament berth.

In 2011, MSU secured its most SEC victories since 2004, including upsets of two Top 20 teams for the first time since 2003, and the 2012 Bulldogs opened the year with an eight-game unbeaten streak, a mark that matched the 2009 squad’s 8-0 start for the best open-ing to a season in school history.

Born May 16, 1972, in Banff, Scotland, Macdonald cur-rently holds his coaching license from the Scottish Football Association. Two years ago, Macdonald returned to his home country and completed his Scottish FA UEFA “B” license, one of the top coaching decorations in international soccer.

Macdonald met his wife Jamie, a staff member at JSU as well, when both were athletes at Augusta State. The couple celebrated the birth of their first child, Colin Ross, in May, 2004, and welcomed their second son, Liam Alexander in March, 2008.

Nikki Brown begins her second season at Jacksonville State as a graduate assistant on Neil Macdonald’s staff.

After concluding a phenomenal soc-cer career at the University of North Alabama in 2012, Brown has moved to the coaching

side of the game. Brown helped organize the JSU’s camps prior to the season and played a key role in the conditioning program.

One of her biggest attributes to the program in 2013 was organizing a ‘Kick for the Cure’ initiative during one of the Gamecocks’ home matches. The “Kickin’ For A Cure” initiative brings awareness of Leukemia, a blood illness that affects over 48,000 people each year. Brown solicited silent auction items prior to the contest and raised over $1,800 in the auction and donations.

Brown, a native of Bognor Regis, England, helped the Lions to an impressive 63-16-3 record in her four seasons at the Florence, Ala. school. The four-year starter appeared in 81 matches, including 78 starts at UNA. While fighting through injuries the entire 2012 season, Brown finished with 11 points behind two goals and seven assists. Her seven assists tied for sixth in the Gulf South Conference. She was also listed sixth in the league with a .053 assists-per game average. Brown established a new UNA career assist record with 51 over a four-year time frame.

She earned First Team All-GSC distinction in 2009, 2010 and 2011, while being tabbed Second Team All-GSC as a senior. The captain of the 2012 UNA squad also nabbed All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She al garnered GSC Al-tournament hon-ors after helping lead the lions to the conference championship against West Florida.

Brown started collecting post-season accolades since her freshman season. She was named a First Team Daktronics All South Region selection three times, while also accumulating Second Team

Daktronics All-American honors from 2009-2011.

Her dedication was not left on the pitch as she excelled in the classroom as well. In 2013, she was awarded with the University of North Alabama Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award because of her work on the field and in the classroom, carry-ing a 3.77 grade-point-average as a physical educa-tion major. Her academic success also earned her Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society status and a spot on the GSC All-Academic Team.

Brown earned a spot on the GSC’s Top 10 Award for the third consecutive year in June of 2013. The GSC Top Ten awards are based on athletic, academic and extracurricular achievement during the 2012-13 academic year and recognize the top five male and top five female student-athletes as the cream of the GSC crop.

Brown’s off-campus work includes a reading initia-tive at local elementary schools, coaching a middle school soccer team and volunteering with the local Special Olympics.

She is the daughter of Malcolm and Laura Brown.

Now in its 67th year, the Ohio valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division i conference.

in May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which began competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont gave the OvC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern illinois University edwardsville joined in 2008. Subsequently, the league has shown its stability over the past decade, seeing only one member institution depart over the past 14 years.

The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. The last three commissioners of the OvC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences.

The OvC’s proud history dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. it was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles “Turkey” Hughes, the athletics director at eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by world war ii, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and evansville to form the OvC.

in the 1950s, the OvC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institu-tions to accept a black student. in 1958 Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. in 1961 Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. with racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans.

After Title iX legislation passed in 1972, women’s athletics began a rebirth on the national scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women’s sports. Recognizing the need to provide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OvC began formulating plans for women’s athlet-ics in 1975 and established women’s championships in the sports of bas-ketball, tennis and track in 1977, with cross country and volleyball added over the next four years. Those sports were initially governed by the Association of intercollegiate Athletics for women (AiAw), but the overall strength of women’s programs in the league was demonstrated by the automatic bids the OvC instantly received when the NCAA became the

governing body in 1982. The conference added women’s golf and softball in 1994 and women’s soccer in 1998.

The OvC has also produced several Olympic athletes, including Murray State’s Morgan Hicks, who was a member of the 2004 United States Olympic Rifle Team and Morehead State’s Brian Shimer who competed in five winter Olympics in bobsled (winning a bronze medal in 2002) and coached the 2010 United States bobsled team to its first gold medal since 1948. Former Morehead State football and eastern Kentucky track and field athlete Dallas Robinson competed with the U.S. bobsled team during the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics. in addition, some of the greatest players in professional sports were educated at OvC institutions. The list includes former greats such as football’s Phil Simms (Morehead State), basketball’s Clem Haskins (western Kentucky) and Bubba wells (Austin Peay) and two-sport star Steve Hamilton (Morehead State) to present-day standouts like basketball player Kenneth Faried (Morehead State), football player Tony Romo (eastern illinois) and baseball players A.J. ellis (Austin Peay) and Shawn Kelley (Austin Peay). Hamilton is the only athlete to ever play in the NCAA Basketball Championship, a Major League Baseball world Series (New York Yankees) and a NBA Championship Series (Los Angeles Lakers).

in 2007 the Conference had two teams in the NCAA women’s Soccer Tournament for the first time in league history, as former OvC member Samford earned an at-large selection while Southeast Missouri was the Conference’s automatic bid.

The playing field is not the only place where OvC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic Achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conference-sponsored sport. Since the College Sports information Directors of America (CoSiDA) Academic All-America program began, the Ohio valley Conference has had 229 student-athletes honored with the award, including 50 over the last five years (2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14).

Through the early years of the league, administrators wrestled with fan behavior due to the close proximity of the Conference members and the intense rivalries which developed. Just as it did decades ago, the OvC took the leadership role on what has become a national issue. in 1995, the OvC implemented a first-of-its-kind “Sportsmanship Statement,” a policy which promotes principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for one’s opponent. The statement has become a model for others to follow across the nation, and has answered the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics.

Additionally, the OvC annually presents the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, in honor of the former Morehead State student-athlete, coach and athletics director, to a junior or senior student-athlete with significant athletic contributions who best exemplifies the character-istics of sportsmanship and citizenship. Most recently, the Conference has also implemented the OvC institutional and Team Sportsmanship Awards, which are presented to one institution and 18 sport-specific teams voted by their peers to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct as outlined by the OvC and NCAA.

The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athlet-ics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OvC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme.

The Ohio valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. in addition, the OvC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle.

Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Belmont University, eastern illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern illinois University edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. in addition Columbus State University serves as an affiliate member for the sport of rifle.

generations of Jacksonville State fans have known their favorite team by one of the most unique nicknames in college sports. But the man they have to thank for it never thought he was making history at the time he suggested the change.

e.c. “Baldy” Wilson is credited with leading the effort to change the JSU mascot and nickname to gamecocks from the eagle owls they were known as before World War ii.

“i didn’t realize it was making history or anything like that,” Wilson said. “We were back from the great war; we didn’t sweat much. i just enjoyed living and being where i was and what i was doing. We just enjoyed being there.”

Baldy and the boys were just coming home from the war and Wilson figured a new era for the college team needed a new mascot to reflect the fiesty spirit of the players.

He had raised banty roosters as a youth, saw the way they fought and carried on in the yard and, at the urging of teammate carl Sprayberry, offered gamecocks as a choice after president Houston cole agreed to let the players change the name.

The 23-man squad approved it and eagle owl went away.

“it was a big deal, because we were the eagle

owls and who wanted to be an eagle owl?” football coach don Salls said. “That’s the biggest thing anybody could ever do to a school, get rid of the eagle owl and change the name. That’s a big deal — a big, big, big deal.”

“i played one year as an eagle owl — 1946,” Wilson said. “everywhere we went they asked us what an eagle owl was. We said we didn’t know what it was.”

The mascot wasn’t the only thing the players changed. There also was a move to switch colors from purple — which Wilson said was consid-ered an “outlaw color” at the time — and gold to the current red and white. Actually, that was something Salls wanted and it fit nicely with the fact many of the players came from high school programs that were red and white anyway.

Those who wanted the color change told Wilson if his group supported their initiative they

would support his cause. Both changes passed smoothly.

“i don’t remember anybody being opposed to it,” Wilson said. “The next thing we knew, coach Salls said you got want you want, you got the gamecocks and the red and White.”

To this day JSU and South carolina are the only two division i schools in the United States that go by the name gamecocks.

Dr. William A. Meehan begins his 16th year as President at Jacksonville State University in 2014-15, but his association with the University dates back to when he

enrolled as a first-time freshman in 1968.

Dr. Meehan completed the Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1972 and began a career in education that same year. He earned the Master’s of Science degree in Biology at Jacksonville State University in December of 1976 and returned in January 1977 to serve as an instructor in the Department of Biology. He com-pleted a Doctorate of Education in the field of higher education administration from the University of Alabama and began the role of President on July 1, 1999.

Since 1977, Dr. Meehan has served in numerous administra-tive and teaching positions at the University. Among these are Coordinator of Medical Technology Program, Director of Academic Advisement, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs and Acting Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

Dr. Meehan is well aware of the benefits of college athletics and what athletics adds to the college experience.

“I’m very proud of the fact that we have won 58 Ohio Valley Conference Championships and two Women’s All-Sports Trophies since joining the Conference in 2003,” said Meehan. “We have claimed conference titles in football, rifle, volleyball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s golf , women’s golf, softball and baseball. We have enjoyed post-season competition in many of our sports, which brings national exposure and prestige to our University.

“Our student-athletes excel, not only on the fields of competition, but also in the classroom,” added Meehan. “I’m proud to say that we have more than 130 of our student-athletes with a 3.0 grade point average or higher again last year and overall, the athletic department had a cumulative grade point overage above a 3.0.”

Dr. Meehan began a five-year term on the prestigious NCAA Board of Directors in August of 2009. The NCAA Board of Directors is the primary decision-making body in Division I, with the ultimate responsibility for the policy and direction of the divi-sion and for adopting any changes to the operating bylaws and rules of Division I. The NCAA Board of Directors is comprised of 18 Division I CEO’s, with each member serving a four-year term. Other duties of the board include establishing the budget, general policies and strategic plan for the NCAA.

Dr. Meehan began a two-year term on the NCAA Executive Committee in May of 2011 and was just one of four non-FBS President’s selected for this prestigious honor. While serving on the NCAA Executive Committee, Dr. Meehan played a part in the final approval and oversight of the NCAA’s budget; provided strategic planning for the NCAA as a whole; and acted on behalf of the NCAA by adopting and implementing policies to resolve core issues and other NCAA matters.

The NCAA Executive Committee consisted of 20 members, includ-ing 12 members of the Division I Board, two members of the Division II Presidents Council, two members of the Division III Presidents Council, the president of the NCAA and the chairs of the divisional councils.

Dr. Meehan was also selected by his Presidential peers to serve as the chairman of the NCAA President’s Advisory Group for two years, serving as chairman in 2012 and 2013. This advisory group’s primary role is to provide the perspective of the 20 conferences that do not have permanent seats on the NCAA Board of Directors. The group also reviews NCAA Division I Leadership Council and Legislative Council recommendations, provides direction on academic policies and suggests implementation methods of any appointed task force group reports.

In 2014-15, Dr. Meehan will continue his involvement in the NCAA by serving as a member of the NCAA’s Committee of Academic Performance, which oversees the process governing data collections, analysis and calculation used to determine the academic progress rate (APR), the graduation success rate (GSR) and the process governing data collection of academic performance census (APC).

Dr. Meehan has and continues to be very active in numerous organiza-tions. He has been an active board member for the area Chambers of Commerce, both Calhoun and Etowah County. He served as a mem-ber of the NCAA Presidential Task Force on the Future of Division I Intercollegiate Athletics and the NCAA Presidents Advisory Group. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Alabama. He is married to the former Elizabeth Stevens and together they are the parents of twin boys, Drew and Will, and a daughter Carol Grace.

Academic Affairs JSU seeks to be recognized as the premier regional, comprehensive institution of higher learning in the Southeast. We aspire to be noted primarily for our focus on students, the

provision of selected academic and professional programs recognized for their excellence, and a geographic and culturally diverse faculty and student body. Our educational programs are

designed to prepare students for the market-place of the future and citizenship in a world economy.

From modest beginnings, Jacksonville State University has evolved into the educational center of Northeast Alabama. The Alabama Legislature in the 1882-83 session created a state normal school when Governor Edward O’Neal signed into law a bill creating the school on February 22, 1883. Jacksonville State Normal School acquired the facilities and equipment of Calhoun College, consisting of 12 acres of land and a two-story brick build-ing. The Board of Directors elected James G. Ryals, Jr., as the first president. The school opened with three instructors: W. J. Borden, Mathematics; Eliza A. Bowen, English; and Ida J. Woodward, primary department. As stipulated in the establishing act, the Normal School administered a preparatory school for children of the town and surrounding areas. At the end of the first year, on August 15, 1884, William Mark Hames, President of the Board of Directors, reported that funds totaling

$4,751.25 had been received, including $2,500 from the state; that 25 students were enrolled in the normal school; and that 222 were in the preparatory school. The Normal School remained in operation until 1930, when it became Jacksonville State Teachers College. Five years later, the College earned regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The name again changed to Jacksonville State College in 1957 when the first graduate program—the master’s degree in elementary education—was created. On August 2, 1966, the Legislature authorized the State Board of Education to elevate the College to university status. On August 17, 1967, the Legislature established an indepen-dent Board of Trustees for the University and divested jurisdiction from the State Board of Education.
