Four years ago, I had no idea what it meant to be a Lion. I had never been to a Fish Fry and I never knew how much they did for the community. But, a friend of mine wanted to join and I said I knew a Lion who could help. Stephanie and I were voted in, we paid our dues and she had to move for work a few weeks later—I was left to navigate this club with the few people I knew. Howev-er, it wasn’t long before I helped organize Christmas Parade entrants in “the pit” with Bill Howes and Alan Chavez and pull trees at the Youth Center Tree Lot with Nikki Il-lingworth that I was hooked. I knew volunteering would make me “happy,” and every time I was around these Lions it was apparent that this group was special. They were cohesive, compassion-ate, caring, and they made it their goal to VHUYHWKHFRPPXQLW\VHOÀHVVO\DQGWLUHOHVV-O\DQG,NQHZIURPWKDW¿UVWPHHWLQJWKDWmy involvement would encompass much more than I had ever expected.

When it was suggested that I take the 3UHVLGHQW¶VSRVLWLRQRIFRXUVH,ZDVÀDW-WHUHG:KHQWKHÀDWWHU\ZRUHRII,ZDVDbit intimidated, but looking forward to the challenge. When the job became a real-ity, I cannot deny that I felt overwhelmed at times, but that’s when all of the clichés you’ve heard over the years came into play. “It takes a village.” “I’m nothing without my team.” “We don’t wring our hands; we roll up our sleeves.” Whenever I felt like I was in over my head, someone threw me a life line. I never felt alone. I always knew there was a team behind me who not only wanted me to succeed, but were deter-mined to help me do it. So, now as I look back on my year as President—on my time as a Lion, in gen-eral—did it make me happy? Let me tell you something about happi-ness. Happiness is dependent on outward circumstances, some event you experience that makes you smile. It might even make you laugh out loud! But joy is something far different. Joy comes from a place deep within your spirit. Joy radiates from within. ,WVKLQHVWKURXJKXVDQGÀRZVIURPXVDQGit cannot help but affect those around us. I am truly happy to be a Lion. It makes me happy when I think of all we have ac-complished together this year, but par-ticipating with such a wonderful group of people, working alongside my neighbors and friends, serving the community that I love and that I proudly call my home—that brings me JOY! It has been my joy to serve as your President. I will always remember what an honor and a privilege it was, and I will con-tinue to serve in any capacity I can for as long as I can. There is no greater organiza-tion than the Seal Beach Lions Club…and there is no place like home.

Seal Beach Lions have taken over the logistical support of the annual Memorial Day ceremony in Eisenhower Park chaired by Lion Aro Riley. Our club provides and sets up all the chairs, sound system and podium for the event. In addition, Lions Beverly Bonney, Dan Schmaltz, Les Shobe and Ester Ken-\RQDOOSDUWLFLSDWHGDVVSHDNHUV$ERXWLions were in the audience to hear speakers such as Congressman Rohrabacher and a gold star Mom. :LWKLQPLQXWHVRI WKHFORVHRI WKHprogram, everything was cleaned up and back into the Lions garage. It was a heart-warming ceremony.
On Monday, May 19, the 17th annual Leo community support night took place at the First United Methodist Church where our own Seal Beach Leo Club distributed it’s charity funds, provided awards and rec-RJQLWLRQDQGLQVWDOOHGWKHQHZRI¿FHUV Lion PDG Ellen conducted the Installa-

On Sunday, May 18 between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Lions pre-pared lunch for the families at the Long Beach Ronald McDon-ald House. The paninis with turkey pesto along with a nice garden pasta salad and fresh fruit was a huge success. The kids ate grilled cheese sandwiches. The Lions also made 40 lunch boxes making lunch on the go easy for the families. Lion chefs included Ashley Villarama, Dave Cornblum, PDG Ellen Liebherr, Doreen and Jim Dowding, Joan Wilkins, and chairperson Adriana Ziegenbusch.
