Dear Friends,
On behalf of The University of Scranton and its President’s Business Council (PBC), we welcome you to The Pierre and thank you for your generosity and support. The University is a student-centered educational community, instilled with the spirit of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. You can experience our Jesuit tradition through outstanding academic programs, transformational student experiences and a palpable sense of community.
Tonight, as we gather for the thirteenth anniversary of this wonderful gala, we are delighted to honor Ralph J. DiRuggiero ’73, P’10. We also extend a warm welcome to Ralph’s friends and business associates who join us this evening. Ralph has been an active and devoted supporter of Scranton from his days on campus as Student Government President, through his early years as an alumni volunteer, and into the present time as he continues to mentor students and young alumni. His business success and his commitment to his community have been well-recognized by many organizations, and we are proud to include tonight’s honor among them.
The University is passionate about creating and sustaining a supportive and nurturing environment for our students. We are an exciting community whose devoted and engaged faculty, through a comprehensive and challenging curriculum, expand the minds and hearts of our students. Our alumni are our best ambassadors, and their lives are distinguished by the ethical rigor, generosity and habits of achievement that they developed during their years at Scranton.
We are most grateful for your support of this dinner, which is an integral component of our strategy to build our endowment and provide financial assistance to our students. We thank you for making it possible for us to continue to build upon and strengthen our tradition of educating leaders who will go and set the world on fire.

In ancient and medieval Europe medallions of office were worn as breastplates by figures of authority or distinction. The University of Scranton Presidential Medallion is such a symbol, and it continues the tradition of incorporating educational, religious and historic icons that describe the institution’s distinctive character. The center of the medallion is an enameled great seal of the University with rays. The principal colors of the seal are the traditional colors of the University, white and royal purple. On the purple field is a horizontal silver bar containing, in purple, a star derived from the seal of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and from the seal of Saint Thomas College, predecessor of the University, and two stacks of wheat from the obverse of the coat of arms of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The upper half of the seal contains, in gold, two wolves grasping a cauldron suspended from a chain. They are taken from the coat of arms of the family of Saint Ignatius Loyola, and they identify the University as a Jesuit institution. Below the silver bar is a golden rising sun, symbolic of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the shining light of the Church and the Patron of the University. Indicating the Diocese of Scranton and William Penn, founder of the Commonwealth, the black border of the shield reproduces the border of the shield of the Diocese, and the silver hemispheres are taken from William Penn’s coat of arms. The crest is a golden cross of the style Patonce. It symbolizes Christ, the goal and the norm of the University’s educational efforts, and it complements the motto, which the University has had since it was entrusted to the care of the Christian Brothers in 1897: “Religio, Mores, Cultura.” The outer ring surrounding the seal includes the name and founding date of the University and reference to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Presidential Medallion is worn on a silver chain with links inspired by carved wooden moldings in The Estate. It is engraved with the names of the previous presidents and the founder of the University. The chain is connected by a link adorned with the symbol of the Society of Jesus. The medallion was designed and crafted for the University by William Reidsema of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania.

13TH ANNUAL AWARD DINNER LEADERSHIP
PRESIDENT’S BUSINESS COUNCIL
The President’s Business Council (PBC) was formed in 2001 by The University of Scranton and a prominent group of alumni and friends with the purpose of advancing the mission of the University. The PBC fulfills the interests of the University and of these alumni and friends in the business community to form an organized, national affiliation that strengthens the Scranton network in the business sectors. The PBC has proven to be a valuable conduit for Members to become more actively engaged in the life of the University.
The objectives of the PBC are to provide meaningful networking opportunities for alumni and friends; to provide mentoring, internship, educational and career opportunities for current students; and to provide a fundraising source for the Presidential Scholarship Endowment Fund. Council membership is open to alumni and friends who can help in accomplishing its objectives.
As part of its goals, the PBC seeks to fund Presidential Scholarships, which are the University’s top merit-based awards for talented students who will become leaders of vision and integrity. Proceeds from the Annual Award Dinner go directly to the Presidential Scholarship Endowment Fund. The Council has generated more than $10 million for the endowment. The annual gala is a wonderful celebration of Scranton and honorees whose lifetime achievements reflect the University’s mission of Catholic and Jesuit excellence and service.
In conjunction with the University’s Kania School of Management, the PBC supports “Career Coaches,” a student mentoring program for students in their junior and senior years. Interested students are matched with PBC Members who serve as the student’s coach and mentor.
The PBC conducts regional receptions in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., with current students attending to promote local networking among students, alumni and friends of the University. The Dinner Kickoff Reception, a national networking event held in New York City, serves as the official kickoff for the Annual Award Dinner. “Meet the Honoree” receptions in Philadelphia and Scranton follow the formal dinner kickoff to introduce the Honoree to alumni and friends in those regions. The PBC continues to evaluate other opportunities to support a variety of business affinity groups.

Presidential Scholarship Endowment Fund
The Presidential Scholarship Endowment Fund was created as a means by which the University could manage a portion of its endowment to secure the proceeds of the President’s Business Council Annual Award Dinner. The interest generated by this fund supports the Presidential Scholarships that the University awards annually to its most academically qualified students. The long-term goal of the President’s Business Council is to fully endow all of the Presidential Scholarships that the University awards each year. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among the top students entering the University each year and are selected for their academic excellence, leadership ability and character. Current Presidential Scholars enrolled at the University are listed on the adjacent page.
Presidential Scholars Program
As part of their Presidential Scholarship, all Presidential Scholars participate in a three-credit seminar on “Leadership and Civic Responsibility.” This seminar, held in the summer between their first and second years, is designed to nurture the students’ leadership skills, to foster their discernment of what they wish to accomplish during their undergraduate experience, and to promote their understanding of the larger social implications of their curricular studies, their community involvement and their lives. Students engage in interdisciplinary readings and discussions, real-time shared reflection on the meaning of their summer employment and civic engagement, and the mentoring of incoming freshmen. Beginning in 2012, the veterans of the seminar have designed a mentoring program for the incoming Presidential Scholars, including one-on-one mentoring and several group events designed to encourage Presidential Scholars to enter fully into the opportunities provided by their Jesuit education.

The University of Scranton is a Catholic and Jesuit university animated by the spiritual vision and
the tradition of excellence characteristic of the Society of Jesus and those who share its way of
proceeding. Located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Northeast region, the University was founded in 1888
as Saint Thomas College by the Most Reverend William G. O’Hara, D.D., the first bishop of Scranton.
Scranton achieved university status in 1938 and was entrusted to the care of the Jesuits in 1942.
The University has flourished under the Jesuits, growing from a primarily commuter school with
fewer than 1,000 students to a broadly regional university with a total enrollment of more than
6,000 students in undergraduate, graduate and non-traditional programs. The academic quality,
distinctive experience and value of a Scranton education consistently garner national recognition.
Since 1972, 148 Scranton graduates have earned Fulbrights or other prestigious international
fellowships. In the past 10 years, Scranton students earned four Truman Scholarships and nine
Goldwater Scholarships. In that same time period, four students were named to USA Today’s All-
USA College Academic Team. The University’s Center for Service & Social Justice has a roster of
2,850 students who perform well over 170,000 service hours each year.
For 21 consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Scranton among the
top 10 master’s universities in the North. The University’s MBA program is among the top 15 in the
nation for general management, according to a national ranking of business schools published by
Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review. For seven consecutive years, the University has
been named in Forbes magazine’s online listing of “America’s Best Colleges.” Scranton is among
just 119 colleges in the nation named to the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement in
2008, and is one of only 100 colleges and universities named to Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll

THE UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON

MORE REASONS TO CELEBRATE A SCRANTON EDUCATION
Another record-breaking year • At 1,078 members, the Class of 2018 is the largest in University history. • The class was drawn from 9,394 applicants, which is the second largest application pool in the University’s history. • Incoming students represent a total of 480 high schools, 10 states, Nigeria, China and India. • States represented include California, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
Exciting new majors and minors • We are pleased to offer several new undergraduate programs this fall, including Applied Mathematics, Entrepreneurship, Journalism & Electronic Media, Mathematics (BA) and Strategic Communication. • We’ve also replaced our former Electronics/Business major with a major in Engineering Management. • First-year applicants may apply for direct entry into a new master’s in Accountancy program. • A combined BS/MBA in Finance is also now available. New minors include Business Leadership and Educational Studies.
Center for Rehabilitation Education • Our new 111,500-square-foot, eight-story center for rehabilitation education will provide an advanced, modern facility to match the exceptional reputations already established by our Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Exercise Science programs. • The project, scheduled for completion in summer 2015, will place the University and its students on the cutting-edge of research and learning, while benefiting the local community through student-based service programs.
