here are few individuals today who embody the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s (HSP) mission

statement of inspiring individuals to create a better future through historical understanding better than Michael Beschloss.

As an author and historian, Beschloss brings the past presidents of our nation to life with New York Times bestsellers like The Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler’s Germany and Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How they Changed America. As the official NBC Presidential Historian and a commentator on PBS, Beschloss is often asked to shed light on current events and contemporary figures from a historically informed lens. Perhaps most importantly, Michael Beschloss is known to be a wildly popular and accessible voice in the history community. Beschloss continues to provide historical perspective to a world-wide audience daily through Twitter (he has over 102,000 followers) and was recognized last year in TIME Magazine’s list “Best Twitter Feeds of 2013.” For these, and many other reasons, we honor Michael Beschloss with the 2014 Founder’s Award.

Tonight, we are also pleased to honor two of our close friends and loyal supporters of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania: Majid Alsayegh and Robert J. Rittenhouse, with the Heritage Award. Both Majid and Bob actively serve on HSP’s Board of Councilors and were vital to the completion of our recent renovation. Majid was a key player in securing funding from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, without which the renovation could not have taken place, and Bob served tirelessly as Chair of our Building and Facilities Sub-Committee to ensure every step of the lengthy renovation process was executed smoothly.

The past year at the Historical Society has been filled with activity and new opportunities. In October we completed an ambitious $5.7 million project that included the total renovation of our lobby, the installation of compact storage units in three of our vaults for easier collection retrieval, the implementation of a modern bar coding system, and four large display cases to feature our collections. Thanks to the dedication and flexibility of HSP’s staff, the library was closed for less than a week total throughout the entire construction process. More than 1,400 members

of the community joined us for our re-opening events in October and over 3,000 individuals have visited the library in the past year.

With funding from corporate partners, the Historical Society served a number of our community’s students. HSP hosted the annual National History Day Philly kick-off program in October (with funding from the Beneficial Foundation). Since the beginning of the school year, over 500 students have taken advantage of HSP’s resources through our ever-growing student mentorship program (with funding from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation), outreach programs in schools, and class visits to the library.

In November, the Young Friends of HSP hosted their most successful event to date—a “Mad Men” themed cocktail party featuring the Balch Institute Ethnic Images in Advertising collection—attended by more than 100 people. HSP welcomed over 350 genealogists to our library and a total of 1,300 family historians to the Pennsylvania Convention Center on March 14 and 15 for our second “Ancestry Day.” Over these two days, attendees were given the opportunity to visit the library and use our resources for research, attend lectures given by genealogists and historians, and even meet one-on-one with professional genealogists to discuss their specific research needs.

About the Founder’ s AwardThe Historical Society of Pennsylvania seeks not only to enrich and maintain the historical record but also to champion history’s uses and enhance its value to the public. As part of its 175th anniversary celebration, the Society established the Founder’s Award for Exemplary Service to History to recognize leaders in these causes.

The medal was commissioned with the assistance of Lea Aspinwall Cadwalader, in memory of her husband John Cadwalader, a longtime councilor of the Historical Society. The face of the medal is based on Alexander Milne Calder’s model for the statue of William Penn on Philadelphia’s City Hall.

About the Heritage AwardThe Heritage Award, created in 2005, is presented to those who have made significant contributions to the future of the heritage of the Philadelphia region and in support of the work of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

The face of the medal shows the Society’s historic Addison Hutton building at 1300 Locust Street, the repository for our 21 million documents (such as the first draft of the U.S. Constitution), books, photographs, maps, and other graphic items—essential material for understanding the nation, the Commonwealth, and Philadelphia.

Dear Guests,As many of you are aware, Wells Fargo’s partnership with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania extends much further than support of the Founder’s Award. On behalf of both institutions, we are proud to update you on our partnership and specifically on our effort to preserve and share the records of the Bank of North America, the nation’s first private bank. The Bank of North America, founded in 1781, is an important part of Wells Fargo’s lineage, and its original location at the corner of South 6th and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia still operates as part of Wells Fargo today!

The CollectionThe Bank of North America (BNA) was the first private commercial bank in the United States, chartered by the Second Continental Congress in 1781. Established primarily to aid Congress in providing supplies and money for the prosecution of the Revolutionary War, the BNA remained an important national force into the latter half of the nineteenth century. This collection is one of HSP’s largest, including more than 600 volumes, as well as correspondence, photographs, engravings, caricatures, printed materials, and other items. Minute books are complete for the period 1780-1823 and there are extensive letter books and financial records covering most of that period. Overall, the collection is richest for the earlier decades of the bank’s history, when its national influence was greatest.

The ProjectWe are very excited to announce that more than 300 volumes from the BNA records have been conserved and are available to the public. This represents nearly half of the volumes in the collection! The volumes have been mended where necessary, cleaned, labeled, and covered in sleeves to protect them from further damage. These volumes have been moved to their permanent home in HSP’s newly renovated second-floor vault (see images below). A finding aid for the accessible material has been posted to HSP’s website and is available on site as well. A comprehensive finding aid will supersede this version at the conclusion of the project.

The conservation team has completed work on the books that needed cleaning and minor paper mending. Each book was thoroughly vacuumed. Assorted debris—such as loose threads, sand, bugs(!), and bits of quill—was removed. Each book was photographed and housed in a polyethylene cover. Now, the team has begun mending the most heavily damaged materials. Most of these volumes need 40–60 hours of treatment each, including: vacuuming; paper mending and folio repair; re-sewing the text block; giving the spine a new lining; and finally, reattaching both covers. When the treatment is completed the volumes will then again be made available for research.

Inside the CollectionThe project team continues to find unique material within the BNA records. For example, conservation technician Charissa Schulze recently blogged about the drawings and doodles that are found within the hundreds of account books and ledgers. She wrote:

It feels almost incorrect to call these images “doodles;” most exhibit a much higher level of intention and execution than we would associate with modern examples of the category. Even so, many of these drawings are penciled very lightly or are all but erased; this, combined with their infrequency, perhaps speaks to a higher standard of discipline in the workplace, but it also makes finding them all the more wonderful—as if they are a sort of secret.

As you can see, the collection is not just account books and ledgers. It provides a window into the lives of past generations of investors, business people, bankers, and more. Please check back with HSP and

Wells Fargo as we track the progress of this exciting preservation project through blogs, videos, and other social media. The project team is documenting its finds and photographs and they can be accessed through the Bank of North America project page on HSP’s website, hsp.org/bnaproject.

ichael Beschloss is an award-winning historian and best-selling author renowned for a

distinguished career that includes his role as regular commentator on both NBC and PBS. His nine books include the #1 New York Times best seller Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy (2011), co-authored by Caroline Kennedy. He is currently working on a history of American presidents in wartime from James Madison to George W. Bush, which will be published by Crown in 2015.

Mr. Beschloss has been lauded as “the nation’s leading presidential historian” by Newsweek magazine, demonstrated by the author’s critically acclaimed body of works. His book Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America (Simon and Schuster, 2007) debuted as a Washington Post bestseller

and a New York Times bestseller for three months after its release. Mr. Beschloss’ The Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler’s Germany, 1941–1945 (Simon and Schuster, 2002) was also a New York Times bestseller and was Amazon’s number #1 best-selling history book of the year. His national bestsellers on President Lyndon B. Johnson’s secret tapes, Taking Charge (Simon and Schuster, 1997) and its sequel, Reaching for Glory (Simon and Schuster, 2001) were heralded by The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times Book Review, respectively. Mr. Beschloss won the Ambassador Book Prize for The Crisis Years: Kennedy and Khrushchev, 1960-1963 (HarperCollins, 1991) and was praised by The New Yorker for his book, Mayday: Eisenhower, Khrushchev and the U-2 Affair (Harper & Row, 1986) calling it “a grand narrative…crowded with well-drawn portraits.” Mr. Beschloss’ first book, Kennedy and Roosevelt: The Uneasy Alliance (Norton, 1980) began as his senior honors thesis at Williams College.

Michael Beschloss serves as the NBC News Presidential Historian—the first such title on any major network. He is also a regular contributor to the PBS NewsHour. Mr. Beschloss won an Emmy in 2005 for his role in the creation of the Discovery Channel series Decisions That Shook the World, of which he was the host. In a career that spans four decades of presidential authorship and television commentary, Mr. Beschloss has been called “a national treasure” by Bloomberg News and “easily the most recognized Presidential historian in the United States” by The New York Times.

Born in Chicago in 1955, Mr. Beschloss is an alumnus of Phillips Academy, Williams College, and graduated with an advanced degree from the Harvard Business School. He has been a historian on the staff of the Smithsonian Institution, a senior associate member at Oxford University in England, and a senior fellow of the Annenberg Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Beschloss holds honorary doctorates from Williams College, St. Mary’s College, Lafayette College, St. Peter’s College, and Governors State University. He has also received the State of Illinois’s Order of Lincoln

and the Harry S. Truman Public Service Award from Independence, Missouri. He is a trustee of the White House Historical Association, the National Archives Foundation, and the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs. He lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife Afsaneh and their two sons.

ajid Alsayegh has been a life-long student of history, leading to over 12 years of dedicated

service on the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s (HSP) Board of Councilors on which he currently holds the position of Treasurer and Vice Chair for Planning and Finance. With over 30 years of experience in project management and as the founder of Alta Management, LLC, Majid has overseen several major capital projects in the region and has made great contributions with his passionate service to a number of non-profit organizations.

Mr. Alsayegh has been a Councilor on the HSP Board since 2002, previously serving on the Board of the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies for three years prior to its merger with HSP. During his many years of service on the Board, Mr. Alsayegh has helped shape the vision of the recent building renovation project. He unceasingly advocated for the importance of safeguarding HSP’s assets by making the necessary improvements to the building. Most importantly, Mr. Alsayegh played a key role in helping HSP steer its way through the state legislative system and to achieve our goal of receiving a matching capital grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to help fund the renovation. As Treasurer, Mr. Alsayegh was instrumental in securing additional financing for the project and in actively monitoring construction costs. His proven dedication and contribution of countless volunteer hours has had a significant impact in helping HSP fulfill its mission.

As Founder of Alta Management, LLC, Mr. Alsayegh provides real estate development consulting services to clients in the public and private sectors. He has overseen design and construction of several major projects such as the Criminal Justice Center in Philadelphia, the Judicial Center in Harrisburg, the Pittsburgh Penguins arena, and the new Family Court in Philadelphia.

With a variety of interests, Mr. Alsayegh is deeply involved with non-profit organizations across the region. His commitment to peace and conflict resolution led to his co-founding of Intercultural Journeys, a non-profit that uses music and the arts to promote harmony between cultures in conflict. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of the Dialogue Institute, a non-profit that teaches the skills of dialogue and critical thinking, empowering young leaders from around the world to sustain transformative relationships across lines of religion and culture. Mr. Alsayegh is also on the Boards of Delaware Valley College and the Pyramid Society, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the art of breeding the Arabian horse.

Born and raised in Mosul, Iraq, Mr. Alsayegh holds a BS in engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and an MS in management from the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Mary, live on a farm near Amityville, Pennsylvania, where they breed and raise Arabian horses. They have a daughter, Jenna, and a son, Ryan.

obert J. Rittenhouse has had a prolific 30-year career in real estate development and project

management in the Delaware Valley and beyond. He has served on the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s (HSP) Board of Councilors since 2008, holding positions on the Executive Committee and Strategic Planning Sub-Committee, and is currently the Chair of the Building and Facilities Sub-Committee. With his years of professional insight and devotion to HSP, Mr. Rittenhouse helped guidethe Society through its five-year renovation project completed this past fall.

Mr. Rittenhouse is currently a Partner of Aegis Property Group in Philadelphia, where he has been responsible for the company’s development management activities in the corporate, R&D, higher education, and institutional market sectors over the past 20 years. Mr. Rittenhouse offers specialized expertise managing real estate development projects with complex technical or financial requirements, while assuming primary responsibility for team leadership and comprehensive project oversight on each of his projects.

Prior to joining Aegis Property Group, Mr Rittenhouse was program manager for General Electric’s Real Estate and Construction Operation where he directed a diversified mix of project types including aerospace, medical systems, plastics, and environmental remediation programs. He was also a construction engineer with U.S. Steel.

Fluent in the skills necessary for such a project, Mr. Rittenhouse played a crucial role in HSP’s recently completed renovations. His dedication to the future of the Society proved itself with his involvement at every stage of the project, tirelessly working alongside the HSP staff, architects, and engineers to ensure a smooth, efficient process. As Chair of HSP’s Building Committee throughout the project, Mr. Rittenhouse gave his experience, expertise, and an enormous number of volunteer hours working with the Committee, providing oversight of the bidding process to the review and negotiation of contracts. He always made himself available to work through problems when they arose.

In the course of the project, Mr. Rittenhouse developed a good working relationship with the contractors and subcontractors and earned their respect by being fair, truthful, and open to ideas. Through his leadership style, he established a standard for excellence, which inspired the contractors and workers to do their best work. Under Mr. Rittenhouse’s leadership, the renovation project was finished on schedule and under budget.

Mr. Rittenhouse also extends his service to the Building Committee of the Research Collections and Preservation Consortium (ReCAP), an archival storage facility for the research libraries of Princeton University, Columbia University and the New York Public Library located in Princeton, New Jersey; the Asset Management Committee of the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the alumni association of his college fraternity in Troy, New York; and the Cinnaminson Township, New Jersey, planning board. He holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He resides in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, with his wife, Suzanne.

hiladelphians tend to be—and rightly so—a bit smug about the city’s role in the political

life of this nation. One could argue that if it weren’t for Philadelphia, there would not even be a nation. The first and second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and voted for independence. The Constitutional Convention was held here, and for a decade, Philadelphia was the first seat of our national government under the new Constitution—housing the Executive (the President’s house in Center City and the summer “White House” in Germantown), Legislative (Congress Hall), and Judicial (Old City Hall building) branches.

The first political party convention Philadelphia hosted was in 1848, where the Whigs nominated Zachary Taylor. In 1856 it hosted two presidential conventions. The American Party (also called the Know-Nothings) nominated Millard Fillmore. The Know-Nothings had origins as a secret fraternal order; members professed to “know nothing” when asked about their party. The Republicans nominated John C. Frémont. In fact, this 1856 convention was the first one ever held by the new Republican Party at the Musical Fund Hall, five blocks directly east from HSP on Locust Street. Both the Know-Nothings and the Republicans hoped to fill the political void created by the demise of the Whig Party in the early 1850s. The Republicans returned to Philadelphia in 1872 (nominating Ulysses S. Grant) and in 1900 (William McKinley).

By 1936, Philadelphia had a new convention hall in West Philadelphia. In that year, the Democrats used it to renominate Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1940 the Republicans returned and nominated Wendell Wilkie. In 1948, three political parties held conventions in Philadelphia: Republicans nominated Thomas Dewey, Democrats nominated Harry Truman, and the Progressive National Party nominated Henry Wallace. The Republican platform included promotion of civil rights, an anti-lynching law, elimination of the poll tax, armed forces integration, passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), support for the United Nations, and support for the new nation of Israel. Like the Republicans, the Democrats supported civil rights, anti-lynching, abolition of the poll tax, the UN and Israel. However, it was at this 1948 convention that Southern Democrats (known as the Dixiecrats) broke

away and held another convention in Birmingham, nominating (still then a Democrat) Strom Thurmond. The Progressives stood for peace with the USSR, ending the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, no military draft, and complete desegregation. The Progressives were also the first major political party to have a keynote address delivered by an African-American.

After 1948 Philadelphia seemed to drop off the political convention map. Fifty-two years later the Republicans returned to Philadelphia in 2000, this time nominating George W. Bush. With many delegates attending, it was held not at the new Pennsylvania Convention Center in Center City, but at the sports complex in South Philly. This was the impetus for expanding the Convention Center westward to Broad Street, greatly enlarging its capacity.

Philadelphia wasn’t the only Pennsylvania city to host political conventions. In 1840 the Whigs nominated William H. Harrison in Harrisburg. In 1852 Pittsburgh hosted the Free Soil Party’s nomination of John P. Hale. And in a bi-coastal convention, held at Valley Forge and Long Beach, California, the Reform Party nominated Ross Perot in 1996.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s collections document the political life of this city and the nation. The James Wilson Papers, for example, document the machinations of the Constitutional Convention (including two of its prized outcomes: the first and second hand-written drafts of the U.S. Constitution). The Charles Thomson Papers include three “secret journals of Congress,” 1774-1780. HSP’s cartoons and caricatures collection spans almost two hundred years of imagery, mostly lampooning local, national, and international political issues. Comprising the collection are eighteenth-century cartoons, prints and clippings of nineteenth and twentieth century cartoons, and a number of original drawings of cartoons that appeared in newspapers during the mid-1930s. The collection is particularly strong in Civil War cartoons from 1861 to 1862 and 1864; cartoons from the 1868 presidential campaign, the late 1860s and early 1870s, some of which discuss Reconstruction; cartoons from the World War I era; and cartoons and original drawings of cartoons from the 1930s that satirize New Deal politics. Despite the collection’s over 200-year date span, there are significant gaps. For example, there are only a few items from the mid-to late-1700s, and there are scant cartoons from the early 1800s, the 1890s, the 1920s, and 1940s. There are no items from the 1840s or from 1863. Many of the images deal specifically with national issues and presidential elections, though most of the cartoons from the 1880s onward highlight local politics, issues, and people. Though humorous and exaggerated, these political cartoons demonstrate how drastically American political and social concerns changed—from abolition and African-American rights, to the crisis during World

War I, through the Depression and the New Deal, to post-war international security. The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies also collected political cartoons. Most contain depictions of ethnic stereotypes, including African-American, Irish, Chinese, and Jewish. Further description of the collections can be found on HSP’s Discover online catalog (discover.hsp.org).

HSP is in the midst of a digital history project featuring its political cartoons collection. The primary goals of the Historic Images, New Technologies (HINT) project are to improve access to HSP’s digitized graphics and provide other libraries, archives, and museums with tools and strategies to increase discoverability of their own graphic items. HSP is developing a sophisticated image tool, based on our existing Digital Library viewer, with the ability to create and display TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) annotations. HSP project staff are digitizing and encoding 500 political cartoons. These cartoons span from the late 1700s to 1923 and cover a range of topics and political themes, including the struggles of the colonial United States, the Civil War, and local Philadelphia politics. For the user, this TEI encoding will result in pop-up descriptive and interpretive annotations that appear when they hover over defined areas of an image. The HINT project is also creating an online digital history exhibit that builds upon previous HSP digital history projects, displaying digital facsimiles of textual material alongside transcripts encoded in TEI and providing users with important contextual information about the documents.
