Analysing the ecology of UK mammalsDavid Oakley is a part-time PhD student researchingthe UK's weasel and stoat population. His studies haveattracted national attention, and he has even appearedon the BBC’s ‘One Show’. “Presently there's no way of accurately assessing whether

these animals occupy an area, or how many there are,” hesaid. To fill this gap, David has designed a rapid assessmentprotocol – using camera trapping and footprint tunnels, as well as hair capture for DNA analysis – and completedfield trials in the New Forest, Devon and Sussex. “Theuniversity has given me the opportunity to contributeoriginal scientific knowledge in my chosen field,” he said.“What I find most rewarding is adding something new to my field of study, which I am proud of, and the BBCappearance was a great chance to present my research to a much wider audience.”
