2014 SEASON

The Alex: It’s not just a landmark, it’s a destination.

Welcome to our 2014 Season, our 88th year

as a Glendale icon, and the 20th year as a

Performing Arts and Entertainment Center…

In short, Welcome to the Alex!

As you flip through the pages of this brochure

you’ll see a wonderfully diverse schedule

filled with world-class dance and music, film,

fresh talent, and, even a live conversation

or two. From the Los Angeles Chamber

Orchestra to the Glendale Youth Orchestra,

the Glendale Pops to Arturo Sandoval and

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Celebrate Dance, the

Los Angeles Ballet, and Chelsea Handler, the

Alex proves once again, it’s more than just a

landmark, it’s a destination.

As we enter the next chapter in the Alex

Theatre’s story, we are amazed at how far

we’ve come over the past two decades. With

more than 2,500 performances under our

belts and almost a million patrons through

our doors, the Alex is as bright as the neon

spire that illuminates Glendale’s Downtown.

We’d like to invite you to become a part

of the Glendale Arts and Alex Theatre

family. This year, we are launching a newly

revamped Glendale Arts Membership

Program. As a Glendale Arts Member, you’ll

play a key role in helping to sustain the

growth of the Alex Theatre and ensure the

historic venue remains a place to gather, be

entertained, educated, and challenged. Plus,

you’ll receive discounts off of participating

performances, invitations to private events

and receptions, as well as discounts from

local businesses and restaurants. This is

a great way to show your support and see

some wonderful performances and events.

Be sure to check out the last few pages of the

brochure as they highlight all the benefits of

being a Glendale Arts Member.

We thank you for your continued support and

we look forward to seeing you at the Alex!

T H E A L E X T H E AT R E : 192 5 – P R E S E N TTHE EARLY YEARS: 1925–1940

The Alexander Theatre first opened on September 4, 1925. The “Alexander” was named after the young son of C.L. Langley, who developed the Theatre project.

In 1934, the Alexander presented daily matinees and double features for every program. Ticket prices were 30 and 40 cents.

FROM VAUDEVILLE TO CINEMA: 1940 –1990

The 100-foot neon-lit Art Deco marquee and tower were added in 1940. They were designed by renowned theatre architect S. Charles Lee. At the time the marquee and tower were added, the Theatre’s name was officially shortened to “Alex.”

Following a distinguished role in Vaudeville history, the Alex became a leading preview and first-run movie house when live

stage performances waned in the 1930s.

Elizabeth Taylor, Bing Crosby, Charlie Chaplin, Ginger Rogers, Barbara Stanwyk, and Robert Taylor were among the Hollywood stars who slipped into the auditorium to see their new releases.

The City of Glendale designated the Alex Theatre as a local landmark in 1977.

A NEW CENTER FOR ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: 1991–2010

For 60 years the Alex hosted first-run blockbusters such as Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Hunt for Red October.

The Alex ended regular operations on September 26, 1991 with Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

In the spring of 1992, the Glendale Redevelopment Agency purchased the Alex and restoration began

in December of 1992. On New Year’s Eve in 1993, the Theatre reopened as a performing arts and entertainment center.

In 1995, the Glendale Redevelopment Agency leased the Theatre to the Alex Regional Theatre (ART) Board, a non-profit corporation which oversaw programming, rentals,

fundraising, and management of the Theatre.

In 2008, the ART Board became Glendale Arts, a private non-profit organization charged

with managing the Alex as well as developing community resources and programming that benefit the community.

In 2009, Glendale Arts launched the Glendale Pops.

Under the direction of Matt Catingub, the Pops has attracted guest artists Kenny Loggins, Dave Koz, Jo Dee Messina, and David Beniot, among others, to the historic venue.

THE ALEX TODAY: 2010 –PRESENT

The Alex Theatre hosts roughly 200 events per year and attracts more than 100,000 patrons to the region. Its diverse schedule ranges from classical and contemporary concerts, theatre, dance, comedy, fundraising, film screenings, TV & Film productions, and special events.

The Alex Theatre has been on Los Angeles HOT LIST’s “Best Concert Venue” Top 5 list since 2007, winning the 1st place spot in 2008. Pasadena Weekly named it “Best of 2010,” and the Glendale News-Press has named it the “Best Live Venue” in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

In the past decade, Glendale Arts has generated over $8.5 million in earned income and hosted more than 2,500 community and professional performances.

In July 2013, Glendale Arts embarked on a 6,600 square foot expansion of the Theatre’s

backstage. The expansion includes additional dressing rooms, storage and shop space, the installation of a new freight elevator to access the street and subterranean levels, a new passenger elevator, and additional stair and hallway access to assist loading.

The expansion will be completed in May 2014.
