background
Cadzow Netball Club was founded in 2005 as Hamilton Junior Netball Club by Geraldine Moore and
Carina & Elena Morris. The club started in the small gym of Holy Cross High School in Hamilton
with approx 10 girls all aged U13. As the years moved on and more players arrived through the
door, most of the original 10 girls remained and were now looking to play Senior netball. To
accommodate this the club changed its name to Cadzow Netball Club in 2012 offering a pathway
for players at U11s, U13s, U15s, U17s and Senior level. Over its 10 years the club has enjoyed
many successes and is regarded as a hugely successful club both locally and nationally.
Cadzow Netball Club is the largest club in Lanarkshire with almost 100 affiliated members to the
Governing Body, Netball Scotland and caters for players of all ages and abilities. The club also
recently embraced the legacy programme of Netball Scotland post Commonwealth Games and
opened their own Bounce Back to Netball section encouraging women and girls aged 16+ who
have fallen away from the sport to re-engage or those who have never tried it to give it a go.
More information on each section of the club is included within this pack.
The club is affiliated to both Lanarkshire Netball Association and Glasgow Netball Association to
enable our players and coaches to enter appropriate leagues for our teams. We work closely with
the South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture Netball Development Officer, Active Schools team and
Netball Scotland’s newly appointed Regional Development Manager. The club recently achieved
Club SL Bronze award in the South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture Club Accreditation Scheme and is
currently working towards achieving the Silver award.
the committeeThe club is supported by a strong voluntary committee of parents who work alongside our coaches
to ensure that our club runs smoothly. The current committee is Chair – Chris Wilson, Treasurer
– Alison Fagan, Secretary – Sylvana Mackin, Child Protection Officer – Rhona Boyd, Coaching
Representatives – Elena Morris & Rebecca Moore. The committee meets quarterly to discuss
any issues and take decisions on behalf of the members. New committee members are always
welcome and can be voted in at the club’s AGM which takes place at the beginning of September.
So if you have something to offer please put yourself forward for a role. We encourage as many
parents and senior members as possible to take some time out to come along to the AGM - this
is your club so your voice counts.

Umpiring Opportunities
Cadzow Netball Club also supports players who wish to become qualified umpires. The club
works with Netball Scotland to identify opportunities for players to attend umpire courses and gain
qualifications to allow them to officiate at matches. Entry award for umpiring is C, progressing
to B then A. Thereafter Umpires are Talent Identified to progress towards International Umpiring
Qualifications. The club currently has 1 active C Grade Umpire, Gemma Rankin who is working
towards her B Grade, 2 additional qualified C Grade Umpires who have gone off to University
and will return to the club in due course, as well as 2 members looking to achieve their C Grade
qualification this season.
Gemma RankinAfter having played and loved netball for over 10 years, I knew
I wanted to become more involved in the sport so went on to
become a C umpire. I really enjoy playing every week but also
being able to teach and guide young netballers. It has also
build my confidence both on and off court, whilst developing other
skills and reinforcing rules. I am now able to make decisions quickly
and react to the game in front of me. I have learnt so much through
umpiring that I am currently progressing and working towards my B award.
In 2014 after the success of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Netball Scotland launched it’s legacy programme Bounce Back to Netball (BBN). The programme is aimed at people aged 16+ who have fallen away from netball due to career/family commitments to re-engage or those who have never played the game to give it a go.
BBN is a recreational programme encouraging people to take an hour a week out of their busy schedules to have some “me” time, have fun, enjoy the social side of the sport and get fit. Cadzow BBN now has 22 affiliated members who meet at Holy Cross High School on Tuesday evenings from 7.45pm-9pm, a perfect time to have the work day done, tea time, homework, children’s bedtime done and now it’s all about you. The cost of the session is £3 per week with a one off £10 affiliation fee to Netball Scotland to cover insurance and reap the benefits of being an NS member, as well as getting a BBN t-shirt.
The BBN group have a facebook page where you can get up to date information on the BBN at Cadzow and festivals being held regionally and nationally through Netball Scotland. Join the group on Cadzow Bounce Back Netball Hamilton and come along and give it a try.

Injury PreventionNetball is a high impact sport which puts a variety of demands on the body during both competition and training. As netball involves numerous complex movements such as jumping, twisting, change of direction, rapid acceleration and deceleration there is a risk of injury.
The most common netball injuries are ankles, knees and hands. It is extremely important to minimise the risk of injury by considering the advice below.
Warm up/Cool down• Always warm up prior to training/games this should include cardiovascular activity (eg running) and dynamic stretching, this will get both the muscles and your brain ready for netball• A cool down should also include some light cardiovascular activity (eg running) and static stretching, this will help to get rid of the lactic acid (waste products) and minimise DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)
Hydration• It is extremely important to drink plenty of fluids in order to keep hydrated, this applies to every day and not just during training sessions and games• Dehydration leads to impaired performance, fatigue and reduced concentration. Even a small percentage of dehydration can have a significant reduction in performance.• Females should drink a minimum of 2 litres of fluid each day, this should increase when exercising.
Nutrition• This is an essential component to both minimise injury risk and also to enhance adaptations to training and optimise performance• Carbohydrates should be a key component of your diet• Remember to refuel after training and games to help repair your muscles and your recovery (ideally within 30 minutes of your session)
Sleep• A lack of sleep leads to fatigue, risking injury• Sleep requirement varies however a minimum of 8 hours sleep per night is required
Balance, Core & Strength• Good balance and particular lower limb (leg) control/strength reduces the chance of injury to ankles and knees. Speak to a chartered physiotherapist/coach if you think this may need to be addressed• Muscle strength and good movement patterns (running/jumping/turning/landing correctly) are essential for netball, your training programme should include this to reduce your risk of injury. Speak to a strength and condition specialist/coach if you are unsure what this entails• Your core is the group of muscles that make up your trunk and abdominals (tummy/ lower back/hips). It’s a good base for stability
Footwear• Wearing appropriate laced up trainers gives your ankles good support. This also supports the rest of the body• If you’re prone to blisters, it can be beneficial to wear two pairs of socks to decrease friction
