Figure PaintingBev Tosh
Enhance your figure painting skills and immerse yourself in the creative atmosphere at Red Deer College. During this enriching workshop, focus on composition, value, proportion and methods of underpainting using a live model. You can expect to complete four or five paintings directly from the model. This course is designed for oil/acrylic painters - not watercolourists - due to the methods of underpainting.
Level: IntermediateCRN #1026 | July 7 – 11Course cost $495 + GST
The Versatility of Watercolour Isabelle Hunt-Johnson
Explore the versatility and impact of watercolour as an art form. Focus on essential painting techniques such as working on dry or wet paper, the properties of colour, personal expression and extended techniques. Explore a variety of subject matter including still life, florals, life drawing, abstraction and the costumed model. Individual development is encouraged through the use of critiques, one on one guidance, sharing ideas, demonstrations and reference to historical and modern practices in watercolour. Expect to complete at least four paintings and a variety of experimental exercises.
Level: AllCRN #1359 | July 7 – 11Course cost $495 + GST
Yes You Can Draw the Figure!Ross Bradley
While drawing is the foundation of all art forms, the most challenging subject to draw is the human figure. Work from a live model and hone your observational skills as you use a variety of materials. Emphasis will be placed on developing your own style of drawing while understanding the principles of anatomy and proportion as well as general concepts of composition, form and light.

Abstract Painting Cold Wax & OilJanice Mason Steeves
Develop your own painting vocabulary and direction in this lively exploratory workshop. Discover how to add layers to create overlapping colour fields and experiment with texturing and mark-making. Focus on the structure of painting and the elements of design using the softly impasto medium of cold wax. Intended to balance playful, intuitive exploration with an understanding of composition, you will have lots of individual attention as you experiment with this medium.
Level: AllCRN #1435 | July 7 – 11 Course cost $495 + GST
Seeking Harmony… Mind, Music and ColourPippi Johnson
Plato and Pythagoras first wrote about the relationship of music and colour. Even the words are the same: key, harmony, rhythm, composition and gradation. Come, bring your acrylic paints and favourite music as we explore the connection and create a unique style and expression. The journey will explore research on this relationship, the use of traditional and non-traditional painting styles and the meaning and effects of colour and colour harmonies on our ideas and emotions. Music experience or education in not a pre-requisite, you only need an open mind and desire for an enhanced creative experience.
Level: AllCRN #1439 | July 7 – 11 Course cost $495 + GST
The Expressive Portrait in ClayJackie Bagley
Review the anatomical structure of the head: skull, eyes, nose, ears and mouth. With class instruction and demos at each step, you can expect to produce a realistic 3D portrait in clay, one that arrives at a likeness with life and expression. A more experienced student can expect to move towards achieving expressive quality, moving towards abstraction. The clay portraits are built on an armature, using the additive and subtractive method.
Level: AllCRN #1032 | July 7 – 11 Course cost $495 + GST
