22nd AnnualTyler Tip-Off

November 15-16, 2014

Kim TylerSmith College Class of 1994

The Smith College Tyler Tip-Off was so named in 1992 to honor the memory of one of Smith’s brightest scholar-athletes. Kim Tyler was a standout basketball player, a successful student, and a wonderful teammate. Her passing during her first year at Smith was a sad moment in Smith Basketball history but an occurrence that has since sparked an outpouring of love and remembrance for Kim and her family. Kim was all that a young student-athlete could hope to be; she seemed destined to live up to those beautiful words, “this woman is a success.” To all who knew her, she did “live well, laugh often, love much, and leave behind a world much better than she found it.”

Smith Basketball would like to extend a special thank you to Tom and Marilyn Tyler for their unending support of our program throughout the years and for their commitment to providing a wonderful weekend for our teams and spectators. We are honored to be celebrating the memory of Kimi this weekend—she was an amazing basketball player who embodied all of the positive characteristics that we instill in our players to this day.

On behalf of the 2014-2015 Smith College Basketball team, we would like to welcome you to the 22nd annual Tyler Tip-Off. This tournament is held in remembrance of Kim Tyler ’94. As fellow athletes, we respect her love of basketball, her adherence to sportsmanship, and her fierce commitment to her team. Her number is retired in our gym, inspiring us to work hard every day and to live life to the fullest. These lessons will guide our team through this 2014-2015 season, and we are proud to honor a woman who shared our love of learning and competition.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating and remembering the life of Kim Tyler ’94.

Entering her eighth season at the helm of the Smith College basket-ball team, Lynn Hersey has over-seen consistent improvement that has turned the Pioneers into one of the best teams in New England.

In 2012-13, Hersey led her charg-es to new heights - the Pioneers tied the school record with 23 wins and made their first appear-ance in the NCAA tournament, where the Pioneers stunned No. 8 ranked Southern Maine in the opening round.

The Pioneers blazed new trails in 2011-12, winning a school record 23 games, advancing to their sec-ond consecutive NEWMAC final,

and capturing their first ECAC Championship with a 65-57 win over Keene State College. Hersey received her first NEWMAC Coach of the Year award for her efforts in turning around the pro-gram.

Taking over a squad that had won only four games in the previous season, Hersey led the team to a five win improvement two years later in 2008-09.

2009-10 saw drastic improve-ment, as the Pioneers qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2006-07, posting their first winning season (14-10) since the 1998-99 season. The 14 wins were also the fifth-highest win total in Smith history, and the Pioneers defeated nearby rival Springfield College for the first time in 11 years. Berit Schelde ’10 earned All-NEWMAC 2nd Team Honors, the first player to do so for six years. The 2010-11 season continued the upswing as Hersey led Smith to a 17-11 campaign where the Pioneers reached the NEWMAC Championship game for the first time since 1998 and qualified for the ECAC tour-

nament for the first time since 1996. Rosa Drummond earned NEWMAC Rookie of the Year honors, the first Smith player to do so in the sport of basketball.

Hersey came to Smith after serv-ing as the co-head coach for the 2005-06 and 2006-2007 seasons at Amherst College, helping lead the Lord Jeffs to quarterfinal appear-ances in the NESCAC tourna-ment. Prior to that, Hersey was an assistant for Amherst from 2001 to 2005. She also was the interim softball coach for Amherst’s soft-ball program in 2006, leading the team to 18 wins and a NESCAC final four appearance.

A four-year starter at Plymouth State College (now Plymouth State University), Hersey captained the Panthers’ squad as a senior and led the team to a 20 win season and a berth in the ECAC tourna-ment.

Hersey graduated from Plymouth State in 2000 with a degree in Physical Education and a minor in Health, and earned a master’s degree in Sports Management from UMASS-Amherst in 2003.

LYNN HERSEYHEAD COACH | 8TH SEASON

ASSISTANT COACHESChessie JaCkson

Assistant CoachFrancesca “Chessie” Jackson returns to Smith for her third sea-son and first as a full-time assistant basketball coach and recruiting coordinator.

Jackson most recently served as an assistant coach at Division III University of Rochester for one season. Prior to her time with the Yellowjackets, Jackson spent a pair of seasons at Smith as a graduate assistant coach, where she was a part of one of the great-est two-year stretches in Pioneer basketball his-tory.

In Jackson’s first year at Smith, the Pioneers won the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England championship with a 23-6 record. The following season, Smith earned an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III bas-ketball championships, the first such berth in the program’s history, where the Pioneers reached the second round of the tournament with an 80-58 win over the then eighth-ranked University of Southern Maine.

The Williams College alumna had a four-year playing career with the Ephs where she helped secure a pair of NCAA Division III tournament bids in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Upon graduating from Williams in 2011, Jackson ranked fourth in career points (1,346) and eighth in career rebounds (635).

Jackson earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Williams in 2011 and a Master’s of Science in exercise and sport studies from Smith in 2013.

JaCkie Ward

Assistant CoachJackie Ward enters her first season as a grad-uate assistant bas-ketball coach at Smith College.

Prior to her arrival at Smith, Ward was an assistant coach at Nazareth College for three seasons, earning her Master’s of Education in the process.

A 2011 graduate of Binghampton University with a degree in English, Ward was a four-year Division I scholarship athlete for the Bearcats, serving as team captain during her senior season.

kristina Williams

Assistant CoachKristina Williams begins her first sea-son as a graduate assistant basket-ball coach at Smith College.

Prior to her arrival at Smith, Williams served as the assis-tant women’s bas-ketball coach at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, Calif. for the 2013-14 season.

Williams had a decorated four-year career at Lewis & Clark College, leading the Pioneers to three consecutive at-large bids to the NCAA Division III national tournament while garnering Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-American honors following her senior season.

Originally from El Dorado Hills, Calif., Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Lewis & Clark in 2013.
