2014 PREVIEW
DULUTH, Minn.—The University of Minnesota
Duluth's full slate of opponents for 2014
has officially been announced.
Head coach Bob Rients and the Bulldogs
finished last season with a 14-26 overall
record but were 14-10 in the Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference, good for seventh
in the league.
UMD will once again be led on the diamond
by defending NSIC Player of the Year and
ABCA/Daktronics All-Region selection Alex
Wojciechowski in his sophomore season.
Wojciechowski finished 2013 with a
.425/.474/.675, good for first, second, and
third in the conference in each respective
category (average/on-base percentage/
slugging percentage) and an astounding
1.149 OPS.
Senior outfielders Kellen McCoshen and
Max Ryan will serve as the Bulldogs' captains
in 2014. Ryan batted .210/.270/.267/.537
with six doubles and eight RBI and made just
one error in 31 games. McCoshen batted
.174/.309./.174/.483 in 29 games without
a single error for 2013.
Junior right-hander John Meyer was named
to the Northwoods League Top 200 prospects
in the offseason and tosses 27.2 innings
of 2.93 ERA ball for UMD in 2013. Meyer,
along with fellow junior pitchers Bo Hellquist
and Kyle Fritz should each see their innings
increase as the Bulldogs look to replace
pitchers Jordan Smith and Adam Zwak who
accounted for nearly half of UMD's starts
and over one-third of its innings in 2013.
Joining the fray will be 11 first-year players
including local products Noah Tapper, a
catcher from Duluth East, and Kevin Stocke,
a pitcher from Hermantown. Stocke is the
younger brother of UMD junior, Michael
Stocke.
As per usual, the season begins with
the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational,

2014 PREVIEW
Mar. 12 with a doubleheader against Northwood
(Mich.) University and continues the next day with
two against Ohio Dominican University, who finished
2013 with 25 wins after making a run in the Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason
tournament. UMD takes on Wayne State (Mich.)
University on Saturday, Mar. 15 in a revenge match-
up for the Bulldogs, who were knocked off twice by
the Warriors last season. The following two days, UMD will do a quadruple-dip
with a pair of doubleheaders against St. Michael's College. The Bulldogs close
out the non-conference phase of their schedule on Wednesday, Mar. 9 with single
nine-inning games against West Chester University of Pennsylvania and Johnson
University-Florida.
The first pitch of the NSIC schedule will be Mar. 22 as UMD starts a weekend
set against Wayne State (Neb.) College. UMD will take on the nation's No. 2 in
Minnesota State University Mankato on Mar. 29-30. MSU finished runner-up to No.
1 Tampa University in the NCAA Postseason Tournament. The Bulldogs miss No. 7
St. Cloud State, the only other NSIC team ranked in the 2014 NCAA II Collegiate
Baseball News Preseason Poll.
The home schedule is set to begin on Apr. 5-6 with a weekend set against
Southwest Minnesota State University. When UMD takes its home field this season,
it will be the first time since May 6, 2012 that the Bulldogs have played a game
at Bulldog Park after snow wiped out the home slate in 2013. After winning six
of its final ten games to close the regular season, UMD bowed out in the 2013
NSIC Postseason Tournament at the hands of eventual champion Minnesota State
and Augustana in the double-elimination format and will look to build on the late
season success as the young squad continues to improve and grow.

Coaching Staff
Bob Rients
Bob Rients enters his ninth season as the University of Minnesota
Duluth's head coach in 2014 and 15th year overall as a member of the
UMD baseball staff.
Rients (pronounced "rents") became just the third head coach in the
program's storied history on Aug. 4, 2005, succeeding Scott Hanna, who
stepped down three months earlier following a 27-season head coaching
run.
Through his first seven seasons of leadership, Rients has compiled
a 172-216 overall record, including an 85-69 mark in Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference play. In 2009, his Bulldogs went 36-20 overall
(matching a program single-season mark in victories) and 22-10 in the
NSIC, also a career-high in conference victories. The impressive season
earned Rients the NSIC Coach of the Year award.
A native of Elysian, Minn., Rients first arrived on the UMD campus in the
fall of 1997 after transferring from the University of Minnesota-Crookston.
He lettered two years (1998-99) with the Bulldogs as an outfielder before
moving on to the coaching arena.
Until his promotion to head coach, Rients was responsible for
coordinating UMD's recruiting efforts as well as overseeing the pitching
staff and monitoring practice sessions starting with the 1999 season.
During his coaching tenure, UMD has earned one NSIC regular season
title (2003), earned the school's lone berth in the NCAA Division II
Central Regionals (2003) and produced the school's first three baseball
All-Americans: Tim Battaglia in 2003, Tim Garceau in 2005, and most
recently, Alex Wojciechowski in 2013. The Bulldogs also have had nine
ABCA All-NCAA II Central Region selections and 22 All-North Central
Conference/All-NSIC honorees.
Rients, who celebrates his 38th birthday on February 2, 2014, earned
a bachelor's degree in physical education from UMD in 2000.

Josh Foremanassistant CoaCH, tHird season
Certainly no stranger to UMD baseball, pitching coach Josh Foreman will embark on his third season with the Bulldog staff in 2014. Contributing mostly as a pitcher, Foreman lettered four times at UMD under head coach Bob Rients from 2008-11, and immediately transitioned
to the coaching ranks in 2012 after serving as a team captain in his final collegiate go-around. Foreman led the Bulldogs in innings pitched in each of his final two collegiate seasons, and had his best year as a senior in 2011 when he went 6-2 with a 3.28 earned run average while hurling a team-leading 60.1 innings. He made nine starts that season, striking out 44 batters and adding two saves on his way to landing All-NSIC second team honors. A native of Shawano, Wis., Foreman owns a degree in physical education from UMD.
Mike Darleyassistant CoaCH, first season
Mike Darley makes his coaching debut at his alma mater in 2014 and, as an assistant coach, will oversee the Bulldog catchers and infielders in addition to working with the offense. During the past year, Darley was the hitting coach for the Eau Claire Cavaliers of the Wisconsin State League and also
the assistant coach at Virginia (Minn.) High School. Darley was a four-year lettermen with the Bulldogs (2009-12) and during his collegiate tenure was used at seven different positions (all but shortstop and first base). As a senior team captain in 2012, he was one of just two Bulldogs to appear in all 51 games and ranked second on the club in total bases, doubles and at bats. Darley also was hit by pitch 12 times -- one shy of the school record -- that spring. One year earlier, he paced all Bulldog starters in hitting with a career-high .342 average to go with a .447 on-base percentage. Darley appeared in 118 lifetimes games with the Bulldogs (89 as a starter) and hit at a .325 clip. The Chippewa, Wis., native is currently enrolled in UMD’s Masters of Education program. He graduated from UMD in 2012 with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree.
Ryan BaierstUdent manager
Ryan Baier joins the Bulldog staff as a student manager in 2014. Native to Chippewa Falls, Wis., Baier was an All-Western Cloverbelt Conference selection in baseball, football, and basketball at McDonnell Central High School before graduating in 2012. Baier is pursuing a Communications
degree at UMD with a minor in Marketing. When he’s not serving as the Bulldogs’ student manager, he enjoys the outdoors (fishing, hunting, and camping) and staying active with sports. His cousin, Nate Baier, played football for one of UMD’s NCAA II National Championship teams.

nsiC PLayer & fresHman of tHe yearAlex Wojciechowski, UMD
Wojciechowski hit at a .429 clip and conclude the regular season leading the NSIC in overall batting average. An imposing figure at 6-5 and 230 pounds, Wojciechowski has hit more than a few shots to match his towering frame throughout the year on his way to leading the Bulldogs in total hits (48), doubles (15), home runs (five) and slugging percentage (.696). Despite consistently looking to drive the ball, the defensively-sound first baseman has sacrificed nothing in the way of making contact with just 16 strikeouts against 10 walks drawn at the plate. Wojciechowski becomes the first player to earn NSIC Player and Freshman of the Year in the same season.
nsiC PitCHer of tHe yearHarvey Martin, Minnesota State
Martin posted a 1.90 ERA with 67 strikeouts and a .199 opponent batting average in 52.0 innings pitched. He ranks fourth in the NSIC in ERA, opponent batting average and strikeouts, while tying for fifth in the league in wins. He is second in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (13.4), seventh in walks per nine innings (0.87) and WHIP (0.83) and 12th in strikeouts per nine innings (11.6). Martin lived up to his billing this season after being named the 2013 NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
nsiC neWComer of tHe yearMartin Valdez, Upper Iowa
Valdez dazzled in his first season with the Peacocks as the southpaw posted a 5-1 record with a 2.18 ERA through 53.2 innings. Valdez appeared in eight games ,starting seven, and averaged 6.71 innings per start, the NSIC’s highest average. UIU’s ace recorded five complete games and three shutouts. His strikeout to walk ratio was more than 4:1 with 59 k’s, sixth most in the NSIC, and only 14 free passes on the year. Valdez averaged 9.89 strikeouts per game, eighth highest in the NSIC. The junior also held opponents to a .226 batting average, eighth lowest in the NSIC, on just 45 hits while allowing only 13 earned runs, seventh fewest in the NSIC.
nsiC CoaCH of tHe yearTim Bellew, Bemidji State
Tim Bellew guided the Beavers to a 22-20 overall and 13-13 NSIC record. The league mark was good enough to send BSU to the NSIC Tournament for the first time since 2008 and the second time in the eight-year head coach’s career at Bemidji State. The 20 overall wins marked the seventh time in program history (62 seasons) the team reached the plateau and, in the process, became the second team to ever post back-to-back 20-win seasons. In 2013, the Beavers finished first in the NSIC in batting average (.330), second in fielding percentage (.970) and fifth in team ERA (4.15).

UMD ... BY THE NUMBERS
94 ALL-NSIC SELECTIONS: The Bulldogs have boasted 94
selections by 64 different players in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference, including Alex Wojciechowski (’16) and Orry Engebretsen
(’13) last year.
85 CONFERENCE WINS: In one of the most competitive leagues in
NCAA II, Coach Bob Rients is 16 games above .500 in the NSIC during
his nine-year coaching tenure at UMD.
13 ALL-CENTRAL REGION SELECTIONS ... In addition to eight in
head coach Bob Rients’ tenure, the Bulldogs also had the Region’s 2003
Player of the Year in pitcher Tim Battaglia.
9 FIRST-YEAR PLAYERS: The Bulldogs boast nine freshman
in 2014, not quite matching the 13-player class from a year ago.
Those frosh produced five of the top UMD batting averages a year ago,
led by NSIC Freshman of the Year, first baseman Alex Wojciechowski,
infielders Kyle Comer and Jimmy Heck, catcher Tommy Bodeker, and
outfielder Josh Denisen.
8 ALL-NCC SELECTIONS: UMD spent four years in the North
Central Conference (2005-08) and had eight all-league players, and at
least one each season.
5 STRAIGHT WINNING CONFERENCE SEASONS: The Bulldogs
have been above .500 in conference play each season since re-joining
the NSIC for the 2009 campaign.
4 BIG LEAGUE DRAFTEES: Tim Battaglia (’04), Pat Bergquist
(’87), John Engen (’79), and Mike Petrich (’90) were each selected in
the Major League Baseball amateur player draft. Four others signed
professional contracts, including three independent in the big leagues.
3 ALL-AMERICANS: Alex Wojciechowski (’16) became the third
UMD All-American selection last year with a Third Team Daktronics
selection. He joins Tim Battaglia and Tim Garceau, each honored by
Rawlings/ABCA, in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
