President’s message

My Dear Members of the Arizona Trustee Association:

Well, another year has drawn to a close. That makes 27 ofthem in the books for this fine Association.

To recap the year:

Steve Itkin (DeConcini, McDonald, Yetwin & Lacey) took asecond opportunity to be Chairman of our Education Committee. And what a stellar job he did!

Not only were our luncheon and convention speakers of the highestquality, but they were timely, topical and generated much thoughtprovoking discussion.

In addition, we had the implementation of the Dodd-Frank Act to contend with. In anattempt to answer our multitude of questions, Steve and his committee put together an excellent“Special Educational Session,” with representatives from the CFPB, the Mortgage BankingIndustry and our industry. To say the least, the discussion was spirited!

Tracey Bayne (First American Title) and Brenda Tucson (Fidelity National Title) continuedtheir string of excellent Conventions as Joint-Chairs of the Convention Committee. We have areputation for putting together a fun, informal and informative Convention every year. This year’swas no exception and was held at the Gila River – Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino. In additionto the great speakers, we had a hot time golfing, gambling, mixing, mingling and...wait forit...listening to Bon Jovi! Well, he kind of looked like Bon Jovi – it was the “Wanted Dead orAlive” Bon Jovi Experience. An educationally good time was had by all.

Stay tuned for a special announcement for this year’s Sedona convention...

Rhonda Mello (Trustee’s Assistance Corporation) has done a stellar job in transitioning thewebsite from old technology to new. I think we can all agree that registering for events is mucheasier with the website. The news is timely and it is very easy to maneuver around. We even havean “app” for your phone or tablet. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter! Ginger Lamband Laura Kaminski (Arizona Capitol Times) have continued their support of our Association asCo-Chairs of the Newsletter Committee. They acted as compiler, editor and publisher of thisTrustee Times newsletter that you are currently reading. What you don’t probably know is that theCapitol Times also helps us with many other things, such as the layout and publishing of theMembership Directory. They are a technology reference and resource for us.

Legislatively, Rick Chambliss (Broening, Oberg Woods & Wilson) as Chair of our LegislativeCommittee, worked closely with our Lobbyist, Lee Miller to monitor legislation and supportlegislation that would be positive for our industry and find solutions for legislation that may havea negative impact for our industry. Suffice it to say, Arizona, once the “Poster Child” forforeclosure volume, has led the nation out of the foreclosure crisis. That was in some part due tothe lack of interference with our Statutes by well-meaning legislators.

It has been another great year for the ATA. I would like to thank the Board Members for theirconstructive help during the year and our Committee Chairs and Members for their efforts inmaking our Association run smoothly. I look forward to seeing you all at the Annual Meeting andHoliday Party which is being held on December 9 at the University Club.

Looking forward to a great New Year,

PaulPaul T. Rhodes, Jr.President

Promising Progressions

by Rhonda Mello

Keeping up with new technology is a significant challenge for anyorganization and it is a vital function which enables us to succeed. TheATA’s productivity can only continue to increase by utilizingtechnological advancement to engage our members. The Board ofDirectors has worked closely with the Website Chair for several yearsresearching best methods to advance the ATA’s technology. This includedtransitioning from a website that utilized dated technology to thecreation of a new website which uses more current technology and willsmooth transitions between Website Chairs. We also created an “app” toutilize when you’re mobile, and are also incorporated into LinkedIn,Facebook and Twitter accounts on social media.

In keeping with utilizing technology to better communicate with ourmembers, we have begun a test to live stream the monthly luncheonspeaker as a Hybrid Event. Have you ever been in a situation where youwere unable to attend the luncheon, possibly because you were out oftown, but were really interested in the speaker/topic? Or maybe youwanted one of your employees to attend the session but were unable tobreak them away from the office? This addition of technology will allowyou to share in the educational experience from a remote location.

The Website Committee will conduct a trial period in early 2015.Please submit your feedback directly to the Board of Directors orWebsite Chair. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, or Likeus on Facebook. Those links are on our website!

President

Rick ChamblissRick Chambliss is a shareholder in the law firm

of Broening, Oberg, Woods & Wilson, P.C. Overthe last twenty-five years, he has been involved inmost aspects of real estate-relatedrepresentation, including escrow, title insurance, and foreclosure matters. He has been actively

involved in the Arizona Trustee Association, serving as a past president,on the Board of Directors, the Convention Committee, chairman of theBy-Law Committee and chairman of the Education Committee.Currently he is the chairman of the Legislative Committee.

Mr. Chambliss believes the ATA should strive to promote theforeclosure industry by continuing to educate its members, affiliates andthe public about proper foreclosure practices while staying vigilantabout the occasional legislative proposal presented to “improve” theforeclosure process. In the past, some efforts to address improvementsin the process were unnecessary because there was not a real problemto be fixed. With the assistance of our lobbyist, those legislativeproposals were withdrawn or defeated. On some occasions, theproposal had some merit but was over-broad and the ATA worked withinterested parties to narrow the scope of the proposal. The ATA hasbeen an effective advocate for the foreclosure industry.

I ask for your vote for President and pledge to continue the goodwork of the ATA.
