Simply stated: WOW! Somehow, incredible, amazing and fantastic just don’t cut it. We used and heard these words continually throughout the 2013-2014 school year to describe our district’s and students individual and team accomplishments as they occurred. As I reflect while writing this column, though, these words don’t seem to do justice in explaining what our school community accomplished collectively last school year.

The 2013-2014 school year began and ended with celebrations not directly related to our current students’ achievements, but nevertheless accomplishments we can all be proud of. In August, we completed the renovation of our high school and celebrated its rededication throughout an incredible Homecoming weekend with the support of our Alumni Association. In the spring, the Beachwood Schools Foundation hosted its successful Foundation Gala to celebrate the induction of 10 new alumni into Beachwood High School’s Gallery of Success.

Throughout the year, our students, through academic, extracurricular and athletic

activities provided us with continued celebrations week after week as our district reached new highs. With a record number of titles won in athletics, to a record number of extracurricular teams winning state and national titles and even competing in global competitions, to our district achieving its highest Performance Index score ever, we have achieved a new benchmark of excellence in Beachwood, and it’s being noticed by other communities everywhere.

Beachwood Schools also made advances for our students by entering into two huge partnerships. Last fall, high school students began classes in our Design & Innovation program, which is the result of our partnership with Cleveland State University. Beachwood Schools also partnered with University Hospitals for the Beachwood-UH Medical Academy, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a major health care system and a public school system. The program, which began this summer, blends traditional Honors and AP course work at the school, with internships and other structured experiences within the UH system.

The accomplishments of our Schools would not happen without the support of the Beachwood Community. While Beachwood can boast that we are one – if not the only – community in Ohio that has never failed an operating levy, our residents can be just as proud of how fiscally responsible our schools have been with the resources provided to them. All schools receive funding from their respective communities through operating levies. The typical cycle for an operating levy is three years, meaning schools often go to the ballot every three years. Beachwood has managed to not seek an operating levy since

2005, which is believed to be longer than any other district in the state. Further, in May, Moody’s renewed Beachwood Schools’ Aaa bond rating, making it one of only four districts – and the only district of its size – in the state to achieve this rating. This is something we are especially proud of.

As much as we like to celebrate our successes, which are highlighted on the pages that follow, your Board of Education is continually looking forward to ensure continued successes. In doing so, we are always mindful that our duty to the community is to serve our students, but also provide a level of service that will help attract and retain families to our community. To achieve our objectives, in January, the Board set a series of goals for the administration (this is done annually). This year’s aggressive set of goals includes academic, extracurricular and athletic initiatives, as well as facilities planning for our athletic fields and elementary schools. We are happy to state that the administration is on track to fulfill each of these goals, which were published by email and in the Beachwood Buzz earlier this year.

As we move forward, we promise to continue to keep you informed of our progress and hope you will help us celebrate these successes by sharing our stories with your friends, families and neighbors. As a community we know this is the best place to raise a family. Let’s make sure everyone else knows it, too!

On behalf of our community and our kids, I thank you for your support.

From our Superintendent

Richard A. Markwardt, Ph.D.Superintendent

Fairmount HilltopBryden

The 2013-2014 school year marked my 10th year as superintendent of Beachwood City Schools. So, it was a milestone year of sorts for me. When I assumed my role as superintendent here in 2004, the district faced some significant challenges. None were insurmountable given the talent and resources of the staff and community.

Today, Beachwood is stronger academically and financially than at any time in its past. Our district’s student performance index places it among the highest performing districts in Ohio. Our students’ scores on standardized tests of achievement and ability far surpass state and national averages. Beachwood City School District is on sound financial ground. We are one of only four public school districts in Ohio with a Aaa bond rating. The newly-renovated Beachwood High School is among the most beautiful high school facilities in the state. Certainly, we can be pleased with our progress in the areas of academics, finances, and facilities.

With progress noted, much remains to be done. Top-performing districts cannot afford the luxury of inertia. Districts that are not

making gains are losing ground. We must never be satisfied with our accomplishments. We must always strive to be better.

The longer I serve Beachwood, the more I realize the unique characteristics that make the Beachwood City School District so special. First among them is the quality of our students. Put simply, we are provided with exceptional clay. Our students come to us from supportive families with high expectations and an intrinsic appreciation of learning.

We have high-quality staff. All districts have stars among their teachers and non-teaching staff members; we simply have more than most.

The Beachwood Board of Education and the administration recognize the importance of keeping students’ needs at the center of all decision-making. If decisions are good for kids, ultimately they will prove to be good for families, staff, and the greater community.

The City of Beachwood is diligent to provide services and support for the schools. The City houses many of its recreation programs in the schools during the summer months. It partners with us in the area of programming

by providing us with advice and community resources through its contacts with area businesses and the Beachwood Chamber of Commerce. Most important, the City is a strong silent partner in our efforts to keep our students and staff safe in our school buildings. I have never seen a greater commitment to school safety by local government than that demonstrated by our mayor, city officials, and the emergency response personnel of the City of Beachwood.

It is impossible to celebrate the accomplishments of our schools outside of the context of our community. Stated simply, Beachwood is a great community that deserves and expects greatness from its schools. The community provides the ideological, financial, and governmental support necessary to achieve the expected level of academic performance. Those of us who work in the schools are privileged to play a role in such a great social diorama.

Thank you for all that you do to support the Beachwood City School District. We are proud of the achievements of our students and staff. We anticipate even greater accomplishments in the future.

Comparing Local Levy Cycles

District Retains Aaa Bond Rating

Moody’s Investment Services reconfirmed Beachwood Schools’ Aaa bond rating in June 2014. Beachwood is one of only four Aaa-rated public school districts in Ohio. The Aaa bond rating is based on the district’s low debt burden and prudent fiscal management, as well as the community’s exemplary voting history of passing school levies.

Refinancing of BHS Bonds Saves $2.3 Million

Beachwood Schools saved more than $2.3 million in interest expense by refunding the Build America Bonds used to finance a portion of the Beachwood High School construction project. The refunding yields a 6.36 percent net present value savings that translates into an actual interest savings of $2,379,121 over the life of the issue. The initial sale of low-interest-rate bonds in August, 2010, coupled with federal stimulus incentives already cut more than $11 million off the initial projected cost (including financing) of $50.6 million. The payback period was also reduced at that time from 30 years to 24 years.

Beachwood Receives State Auditor’s Award

The Beachwood City Schools’ excellent record-keeping has again earned the district the Auditor of State Award with Distinction after a financial audit by Auditor of State Dave Yost’s office returned a clean audit report. The state’s audit opinion was unmodified – there were no findings for recovery or recommendations, and the district’s financial statement accurately depicts the district’s operations. The Auditor of State Award with Distinction is presented to local governments and school districts that have perfect audits upon the completion of a financial audit. Beachwood Schools also has its own audit committee comprising three independent citizens and a board member who are business people or certified public accountants. This committee meets with the administrative team to plan the audit each year and also meets independently with the state auditors to review procedures. The committee also reviews other activities, such as bullying, testing, policies and litigation.

Beachwood voters passed the districts’ last operating levy of 5.9 mills in May, 2005, when the district also promised the community it would not seek additional funding from an operating levy for at least three years (2008). Through 2014, the district has more than kept its promise; It has been more than nine years since the district sought additional operating revenue from taxpayers.

Operating levies fund school districts’ day-to-day expenditures (salaries, benefits, utilities, books, supplies and equipment) through property taxes. The majority (80 percent) of funding for the Beachwood City School District is derived from local property taxes.

In a recent survey of neighboring districts, Beachwood Schools was the only district to remain off the ballot for an operating levy since 2005. See the accompanying chart to compare the operating levy cycles of local school districts.

Partnerships Lead To Creation of Medical Academy, Design & Innovation Program

University Hospitals and the Beachwood City School District announced a partnership this year to establish a rigorous four-year, science-based curriculum designed to prepare high school students for professional careers in medicine. The UH-Beachwood High School Medical Academy will be a seamless academic program that blends traditional Honors and Advanced Placement course work at Beachwood High School with internships, credit-flex studies, augmented summer course work, and structured experiences at multiple sites within the UH system.

This unique educational partnership represents a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a major health system and a public school system. While Beachwood High School has a strong reputation for its academic program that is often compared to the area’s finest private schools, mastery of academic content alone does not prepare a student for a professional career in health care. Academy graduates who enroll in academically-demanding pre-med college programs will have a distinct advantage over students from other high schools.

A group of high school students attended a two-day medical academy camp in June. Classes for freshman and sophomore students are scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2014.

Beachwood High School also introduced a new Design & Innovation program in partnership with Cleveland State University’s Washkewicz College of Engineering. Students in this cutting-edge four-year program will be exposed to biomedical engineering, software engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial design and more.

BEACHWOOD EARNS 7TH STRAIGHT MUSIC EDUCATION AWARD

Beachwood City Schools has been selected among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation for the seventh consecutive year. Now in its 15th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation recognized 376 school districts nationwide for their commitment to and support of music education in schools. The BCME survey requires districts to answer detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Institute for Educational Research and Public Service of Lawrence, Kansas, an affiliate of the University of Kansas.

District News

Beachwood Middle School was re-designated in the national Schools to Watch® recognition program developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. BMS is one of just 20 Schools to Watch in Ohio.

Launched in 1999, the Schools to Watch® initiative identifies schools across the United States that are well on their way to meeting the Forum’s criteria for high performance. Each school was selected by state leaders for its academic excellence, its responsiveness to the needs and interests of young adolescents, and its commitment to helping all students achieve at high levels. In addition, each school has strong leadership, teachers who work together to improve curriculum and instruction, and a commitment to assessment and accountability to bring about continuous improvement.

BMS RE-DESIGNATED AS NATIONAL SCHOOL TO WATCH

Schools to Watch are recognized for a three-year period, and at the end of three years must repeat the process in order to be re-designated. BMS first earned the designation in 2008 and again in 2011 – both times under the leadership of current Hilltop Elementary School principal Mrs. Linda LoGalbo, who was BMS principal from 2006 until 2013. Mr. Paul Chase has been BMS principal since the start of the 2013-2014 school year and led the school through this most recent re-designation.

The Ohio Department of Education’s site visit team noted the school’s use of technology in every school environment, the school’s ethnic and cultural diversity, and the teachers’ collaborative work styles and commitment to student success.

Beachwood Schools was recognized with the Ohio School Public Relations Association’s “Best of the Best” awards for Ohio’s best school web site and the best school social media site at OHSPRA’s annual conference held in March. Contest judges cited the district web site’s comprehensive content, clean lay-out, and easy navigation, and they commended the district’s Facebook page for its use of photos and high engagement rate among the page’s “fans.” Beachwood Schools’ web site and social media profiles are managed by Doug Levin, director of marketing and communications.

Celebrations

The Beachwood Federation of Teachers sponsored its second annual Family Fun Night in January, during the varsity boys basketball game. The event provided families with a great night to beat the cold while the Bison defeated Cuyahoga Heights, 74-51. Activities included bounce houses, face painting, cup-stacking, crafts, flags, balloons, and – thanks to The Microsoft Store at Beachwood Place – six new mobile Xbox One consoles for students to play.

More than 500 guests attended Beachwood High School’s ninth annual American Sign Language Club holiday party for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in December. More than 70 students in Beachwood High School’s American Sign Language Club and ASL foreign language classes were involved in the planning of the party. The 500 guests included children and adults (and their families) from dozens of schools and organizations throughout Northeast Ohio’s

deaf and hard-of-hearing community. This event provides an opportunity for BHS students to give back to the community. BHS’s ASL club and language classes have a historic bond with Cleveland’s D/HH community. This party also gives typical-hearing students the opportunity to practice the communication skills they have learned in ASL foreign language classes, according to BHS sign language teacher Ms. Sharon Weisman.

Going Global!

A team of BMS students who won the state Destination Imagination championship was one of three Beachwood teams that placed in the top 15 in the world at the Destination Imagination 2014 Global Finals, held May 21-24, at the University of Tennessee. Two more Beachwood teams placed in the top 30 at Globals. A record 1,412 teams comprising 7,978 students competed in this year’s Global Finals, and more than 125,000 students participated in Destination Imagination tournaments worldwide.

The five Beachwood teams that competed at Globals - two each from Hilltop Elementary School and Beachwood Middle School and one from Beachwood High School - qualified by placing among the top three teams in their respective challenges at the state DI tournament held on April 26. Beachwood’s team of eighth graders – Olivia Adelman, Abbey Brewer, Gaby Rodriguez, and Lily Steiger – won the state championship in the “Laugh Art Loud” challenge, while three other Beachwood teams took second and one team took third in their respective challenges.

In March, 12 Beachwood teams participated in the DI regional tournament, held at Beachwood High School. Of Beachwood’s nine competitive teams, five teams finished in first place in their respective categories to advance to the state DI tournament. The remaining four competitive teams all placed. For the first year, Beachwood also fielded three Rising Stars (non-competitive) teams from Bryden Elementary School at Regionals. Beachwood’s DI adviser is Hilltop teacher Mrs. Shelley Lewis.

Two Marketing Students Qualify for International DECABeachwood marketing students Josh Raiffe (Beachwood) and Mike Koller (West Geauga) earned the High Achievement Award at the DECA International Competition in May in Atlanta, where they competed with 16,000 students from each of the 50 states and eight countries. DECA is an international organization of marketing students that provides various competitions and leadership programs for students at the high school and collegiate level. They qualified for the International DECA competition by placing second in the “buying and merchandising” event at the state’s DECA competition, where 10 Beachwood students from Mrs. Jean Getz’s Beachwood’s Excel TECC marketing class competed in events such as food marketing, business services and professional selling. Events test the knowledge and application of business and marketing techniques. Jared Wexler (Beachwood) placed sixth in the “quick-serve management” event at States.

BHS Orchestra Visits Italy

More than 80 students in the BHS orchestra traveled to Italy for a fabulous Spring Break trip to see the sites, learn the history, and perform three concerts. Students visited Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Orvieto, and Rome and saw sites such as the Roman Coliseum, the Jewish Quarter, the Vatican, and Amalfi St. Andrew Cathedral. They also traveled by boat, tram, and shuttle bus to the top of the Isle of Capri, where Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire for 11 years. The history was fascinating and the views were spectacular. The orchestra, conducted by Mrs. Lisa Goldman and Ms. Noél Bliss, performed three concerts at the Sorrento Cathedral, Duomo di Orvieto, and St. Paul Within the Walls Church.

Going Global!

Beachwood High School junior Maria Alvarez’s film Difference of Opinion was named the winner of the Best High School Experimental Film category at the International Student Film Festival Hollywood in October of 2013, in Hollywood, California.

Alvarez entered three films into the festival for high school and college film students from the United States and abroad. Alvarez was one of only a handful of students to have two films accepted. In total, 78 films were accepted into the festival.

Difference of Opinion is a one-minute short film – a dark comedy about two lovers with different outlooks of their relationship. She produced the film while attending a four-week summer program at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles in 2013. The program immerses students in all aspects of filming, including story-writing, filming, editing and directing.

“In class, we’re coming up with new projects and ideas every day, and we get to play different roles in the production process,” Alvarez

said. “Beachwood High School’s beautiful new television studio gives me access to high tech tools that other students don’t have. When I get to college, I’ll already be prepared because I won’t be doing this for the first time.”

The BHS Academic Challenge team won the National History Bowl national championship in the Varsity Small School division on April 26, in Washington, DC. More than 130 varsity level teams from across the country competed. Topics cover a wide range of areas, including traditional history, historically important scientific discoveries, artworks, musical compositions, and works of literature. A “small school” is any non-magnet, non-selective public school with fewer than 1,000 students in grades 9-12. Team members are Chandler Kitson, Ryan Reilly, Jay Rajan, and Jodi Shapiro. In a separate event, junior Ryan Reilly finished 21st out of nearly 200 seniors and juniors competing at the National History Bee. Advisers were BHS teachers Mr. John Kaminski and Mr. Steve Arvidson.

BMS Orchestra Takes 1st Place at Cedar Point Music Festival

Congratulations to the seventh and eighth graders in the Beachwood Middle School orchestra that won two first-place awards at Cedar Point Music Festival. Performing in the competitive class, the orchestra earned the two trophies for its “superior” score and for the highest orchestra score of the event in all classes, including high schools and middle schools.

Team 695, Beachwood High School’s robotics team, won the 2014 OhioFIRST state championship on May 17 during a day-long competition at Thurgood Marshall High School in Dayton.

After finishing sixth at the IllinoisFIRST Robotics regional in April and following all of the regional qualifiers during the late winter months, Beachwood ranked first out of Ohio’s 55 teams to earn one of 24 invitations to compete at the state championship. Beachwood’s Team 695 was the number one seed heading into the tournament.

Team 695 made major changes to its robot following the early morning practice rounds at the state tournament and selected two other teams to join its alliance to battle for the state title: Team 48 from Warren and team 5146, a rookie team from Hebron. When the dust settled after the afternoon competitions, Team 695 and its alliance partners were crowned champions! The teams advisers are BMS teachers Mr. Bob Davis and Mr. Robb Ristau.

State Power of the Pen

Beachwood High School’s The Beachcomber (student newspaper) staff won its second consecutive first-place rating at the Ohio Scholastic Media Association Conference, held April 4-5, at Kent State University. The Beachcomber staff also earned an ‘Excellent’ overall rating for its news web site, bcomber.org, and won 29 individual superior, excellent and honorable mention awards. The Beachcomber adviser is BHS teacher Mr. Josh Davis.

NEWSPAPER STAFF WINS 1st-PLACE STATE RATING

Seventh grader Yardena Carmi, left, and eighth grader Jinle Zhu wrote their way into the final “Power Round” and earned distinguished spots in the top 1 percent of writers this season at the State Power of the Pen writing tournament at the College of Wooster on May 23. Zhu’s “best response to a prompt” during the first round of the state Power of the Pen tournament was the competition’s number one-ranked piece. She received a superior rank of 99 for the piece entitled Run Like the Wind, which will be published in the Book of Winners, a publication that is sent to and used by all Power of the Pen coaches. Zhu was ranked 20th out of all eighth grade writers in the state of Ohio this year. Power of the Pen advisers are Beachwood Middle School teachers Ms. Kelley McLaughlin and Ms. Julie Ungier.

Separate teams of Beachwood fifth graders and sixth graders each placed first and second at the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics math contest at John Carroll University in February. Beachwood fielded seven total teams comprising 28 fifth and sixth graders. Last year, only two Beachwood fifth grade teams competed.

For two hours, students competed in four rounds requiring problem solving, mental math, construction and application of concepts. Students worked both individually and together in different rounds. Out of 11 fifth grade teams and 10 sixth grade teams, 20 percent of the teams earned trophies, 40 percent earned Championship Awards (blue ribbons) and 40 percent earned Special Awards (red ribbons).

Beachwood math teachers Ms. Carole Katz, Mrs. Shelly Lewis, and Mrs. Laura Gibson coached and practiced with the students for several weeks.

The purpose of this tournament is to promote enthusiasm for mathematics among students in the fifth and sixth grades; recognize students for their interest, perseverance, and talent in mathematics and problem solving; challenge these students in an energizing and competitive setting; and celebrate community-wide the achievements of these young mathematicians.

Beachwood High School senior Scott Arkin was named one of the 565 semifinalists – and one of just 18 from Ohio – in the 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Semifinalists were selected from more than 4,000 candidates on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character, and involvement in community and school activities. They were chosen by a panel of distinguished educators after a review of students’ essays, self-assessments, descriptions of activities, school recommendations, and academic transcripts. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.

11 Students Earn National Merit Recognition

About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The 16,000 finalists who earned this honor nationwide represent less than 1 percent of all high school seniors. These students competed for more than $35 million in National Merit Scholarships that were offered in the spring.
