The experts say the move will be one way of ending human traffick-ing and child slavery.The appeal follows findings of a new research that suggests that the global fall in wildlife numbers is connected to an increase in human trafficking and child slavery.Ecologists say a shortage of wild animals means more labourers in many countries are needed for sur-vival. And children are often used to fill the gap for cheap workers,

especially in the fishing industry.The decline in wildlife species has also escalated terrorism and desta-bilisation of regions, the researchers say.They claim the rise in value of items such as tiger organs and elephant ivory have led to an explosion of trafficking by powerful groups.The authors point to the Janjaweed, the Lord’s Resistance Army, Al-Shabab and Boko Haram, all of whom they say have been involved in poaching ivory and rhino horns to fund terrorist attacks. They say simple declarations of war on poachers which have been the standard response by most govern-ments to the events are misguided

and missing the bigger picture.“We can continue to try and cover it up with little bits of enforcement. But until we start to address the bigger issue which is poor gover-nance and the global free for all, we are not going to address the tide of conflict,” said Prof Justin Brashares of the University of California.He led the study whose report was published in the journal, Science. Prof Brashares claims harvesting of wild animals from the sea and land is an $400bn (Sh34 trillion) annual enterprise and supports the liveli-hoods of 15 per cent of the world’s total population. They say criminal groups such as Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram and The

Lord’s Resistance Army are ex-ploiting the avenues to fund terror activities.They argue that the rapid depletion of species has increased the need for slave labour. Declining fisheries across the world mean boats often have to travel further in harsh-er conditions for fishermen find harvest.This is where pirates and criminal gangs take advantage.“That’s how the whole Somali conflict started as fishermen started going out with guns, trying to fine boats that were fishing illegally in their waters,” Prof Brashares says.“There’s a direct link between scar-city of wildlife, labour demands of

Highway footbridges a risk to pedestrians, says union

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) should first ensure safety on footbridges before asking pedestrians to use them, a union has said.An association of motorists also want adverts put on the footbridges pulled down because they make the walkways dark and unsafe

for users. The Motorists Association of Kenya chairman Peter Murima says the footbridges should remain well lit to ensure safety of pedestrians.His appeal comes barely days after NTSA started arresting pedestrians who ignore the bridges to cross roads at dangerous points.

The authority is concerned over the high rate at which Kenyans continue to lose lives under preventable circumstances. More than 100 pedestrians have been killed in Nairobi alone due to road traffic accidents at points where the footbridges are just overhead.NTSA Director General

Francis Meja says the agency is rehabilitating all the 33 footbridges and pedestrian tunnels in Nairobi. He said his office will encourage pedestrians to stick to the footbridges.NTSA says 692 of the 1, 484 road deaths recorded since January this year involve passengers, majority of whom

have been hit while crossing highways in Nairobi.Pedestrians and users of intermediate modes of transport, he adds, contributed up to 1,030 of the deaths, representing 69.4 per cent of the toll.“This number could significantly come down if people started using

footbridges,” he said.Meanwhile, road users say the footbridges are often dirty and littered with human dung. They also say it is risky to use the crossings as street boys and thugs have taken control of most of the facilities from where they mug and steal from passers-by.

NEWSScientists discover brain cells that can arrest eatingScientists have discovered a central hub of brain cells that may put the brakes on a desire to eat.And switching on these neurons can stop feeding immediately, according to the Nature Neurosciences report.After a study on mice, researchers say the findings may one day contribute to therapies for obesity and anorexia. Experts say this sheds light on the many complex nerve circuits involved in appetite control. Scientists from the California Institute of Technology suggest the nerve cells act as a central switchboard, combining and relaying many different messages in the brain to help reduce food intake. Using laser beams they were able to stimulate the neurons - leading to a complete and immediate stop to eating.Prof David Anderson, lead author of the study told the BBC: “It was incredibly surprising. It was like you could just flick a switch and prevent the animals from feeding.”Researchers then used chemicals to mimic a variety of scenarios - including feelings of satiety, malaise, nausea and a bitter taste. They found the neurons were active in all situations, suggesting they may be integral in the response to many diverse stimuli. The cells worked rapidly when mice had taken a full meal, indicating they may also play an important role in the prevention of over-eating. “These cells represent the first well-defined hub that inhibits feeding in the brain.Prof Anderson said.

A $126million (Sh11.1 bil-lion) loss has been reported by Electronic commerce company, Amazon, in its second quarter.The loss came despite a 23 per cent increase in second quarter sales to $19.3bilion (Sh1.7 trillion). This has led to stock exchange analysts to predict big profits for the firm.The US company has also warned that sales could dip in the current quarter. The announcement has scared investors and forced its shares to drop by six per cent. The investors are worried that the net loss is nearly double what had been predicted by experts.The loss has been attributed to heavy investing the com-pany has done to try and build up the business.Last month, the com-pany launched the first ever smartphone, the

Fire Phone, and has been developing digital content, including computer games and TV shows. The projects are expected to cost them

$100m (8.8 billion) in the third quarter.Despite the setback, Amazon predicts a rise in third quarter sales between

As the cost of energy continues to rise, the Kenya Electricity Generation Company (KenGen) will next month start feeding an additional 20 megawatts (MW) to the national grid.The move is expected to improve power supply and reduce costs of power. The extra energy is produced at its Wind Farm in Ngong, in Kajiado.KenGen CEO Albert Mugo says the 20 MW project is at the final stages and should be complete by August 2014.“The 20MW has been done as two separate projects where we have

installed eight turbines generating 6.8MW at a cost of €12 million (Sh1.4 billion) that was advanced by the government of Belgium,” says Mugo. “The second one we have 16 turbines with a generation capacity of 13.4MW at a cost of €20 million (Sh2.4 billion) that was given by the government of Spain.” Power prices have gone up in recent months following a poor rainy season between March and May. The insufficient supply led to a drop in power output from Kenya’s

hydroelectricity dams. This has led to the country increasingly relying on more costly diesel-fired thermal sources. KenGen says compared with other renewable sources, which include geothermal, hydro power is cheaper. In the past three months, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has said the cost of producing electricity has gone up by slightly over three per cent. This has caused households to pay an average of Sh4, 700 per month, up from Sh4, 300.

While Java’s stores initially proved a hit with expatriates, more than 70 per cent of customers are now Kenyans, mostly under 40s. Kenyans spend at least Sh150 each time they visit a coffee house.

Devoted coffee drinkers make an average five visits a week to spend no less than Sh3,300 a month on the brew. Some spend up to Sh10,000 a month on popular varieties like lattés, cappuccinos, macchiato, espressos and mochas.

Those who cannot afford to visit the houses spend about Sh500 a month on instant coffee. Euromonitor’s experts say the leading supplier of the brand is Nestlé Foods Kenya, thanks to its offer of affordable brands.

Nescafé has a dominant 69 per cent share of the instant coffee market. “The company’s success can also be explained by the introduction of small pack sizes, which have enabled it reach low-income consumers,” say Euromonitor experts.

Kenyans who visit coffee houses are considered to be the rich and sophisticated type.A new report by research group Euromonitor has revealed that professionals are increasingly relying on coffee to keep them going in a demanding work environment. Euromonitor researchers say in Kenya, as in the West, coffee is increasingly being perceived as an energy booster and is associated with performance.It is served in offices during breaks, at conferences and other formal business meetings. It is also popular among students during exam periods.The country’s drinking trend was spurred by the introduction of coffee houses in 1999.“People thought we were crazy to try to sell coffee to Kenyans,” said Jon Wagner, a US former relief worker who co-founded the Java Coffee House almost 15 years ago. Another company, Bonzo Me, has been doing something similar since early July 2014.“I just feel like everyone on social networks has been taken advantage of for long enough,” said Michael Nusbaum, the creator Bonzo Me. “Face-book has been making a ton of money, and the people providing the

content aren’t getting any-thing.” Last Wednesday, Facebook reported mas-sive earnings for the past three months, claiming it rakes in almost Sh88bil-lion every 30 days. A statement from Joey Cosco from US based tech company, Business Insider, says that none of that money “ever touches the users’ pockets.”On the other hand, Bonzo Me is paying its users up to 80 per cent of its ad-vertising revenue for the most popular posts. Anyone across the world, including Kenya, can use their services by down-loading the Bonzo Me app onto their smartphones.

Local banks have introduced the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), a loan pricing mechanism to promote transparency in the industry.
