‘Transit’ artwork is how the world sees Boston A local artists’s colorful Back Bay cityscape will soon be gifted to visiting dignitaries, serving as a testament to the reservoir of creative home-grown talent flourishing in the Hub.
“Transit,” by artist Adam O’Day was selected as the winner of the Portrait of a City competition, which chal-lenged artists to submit work that captured the spirit of contemporary life in Boston.
“Arts and culture has always been one of my ad-ministration’s top priorities,” said Mayor Marty Walsh. “The purpose of this competition is to highlight and showcase the work of local artists, and all of their creations were great. These artists are making the city a vibrant and lively place to live.”
Walsh’s office will pur-chase 30 printed and framed prints of the painting, which
shows Boston’s Back Bay as seen from Back Bay station. The paintings will then be given as gifts to visiting diplomats and distinguished guests, according to city of-ficials.
O’Day, an Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University alumnus, has participated in more than 100 art shows. His work includes elements of impressionism and expres-sionism. MORGAN ROUSSEAU
Rally-goers: ‘Keep your ideology off my body’
Hundreds gathered on City Hall Plaza on Tuesday to rally against the Supreme Court decisions on Hobby Lobby and buff er zones outside of abortion clinics. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
Hundreds of women’s rights advocates flocked to City Hall Plaza on Tuesday evening to speak out against two recent Supreme Court rulings that protesters say make it harder for women to safely access health care and plan their re-productive future.
Last month, the nation’s highest court unanimously vot-ed to strike down a seven-year-old protest-free buffer zone outside abortion clinics as un-constitutional, on the grounds that it violates the free speech of pro-life demonstrators.
A week later, the court ruled that craft chain Hobby Lobby can object on religious grounds to a provision of the federal
health care law that requires employers to provide insurance covering birth control.
Tuesday evening, rally-goers cheered on activists, like Hailey Magee of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, who declared, “I personally don’t want any bosses in my bedroom,” and “Not the church, not the state, women must decide their fate.”
Speakers included Mayor Marty Walsh as well as City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, who roused the crowd with her emotive speech.
“For a host of reasons peo-ple often caution me for ap-pearing angry in public,” said Pressley. “Damn right I’m out-raged because my body is not your hobby.”
Walsh said he was “disap-pointed” and “disgusted” with the court’s rulings, but said leg-islators would work to protect women trying to access repro-ductive health care.
Outraged. Local advocates are raising their voices against two Supreme Court rulings targeting reproductive rights.

FBI agent, roommate testify in Tazhayakov trial
A federal agent who inter-rogated a friend of the suspected Boston Marathon bomber three days after the deadly attack testified in federal court Tuesday that
two of the alleged terror-ist’s friends jointly agreed to throw away evidence.
FBI agent Sarah Wood said Azamat Tazhayakov, who is on trial for obstructing a ter-ror investigation, consulted with his friend Dias Kady-rbayev before deciding to dispose of a backpack full of emptied fireworks allegedly
belonging to Tsarnaev.Another witness testify-
ing Tuesday was Tsarnaev’s college roommate, Andrew Dwinells, who said he let Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev into the room on April 18, 2013. The men claimed to have received a text from Tsarnaev saying “something about [Tsarnaev] leaving the
country and he won’t be back, so [Kadyrbayev] can go ahead and take what he wants.”
Kadyrbayev then removed a small bag of marijuana from Tsarnaev’s drawer, and spent roughly 10 minutes going through Tsarnaev’s belongings, according to Dwinells. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Visit Metro.us to view the proposed plans for the Mohegan Sun casino in Revere.
Casino opponents ripped into Mayor Marty Walsh over a reported agreement between the city and Mohegan Sun that doesn’t allow East Boston residents to vote on the plan.
“We hoped for more from Mayor Walsh, who knows well the damage addiction has on people, families and com-munities,” said John Ribeiro, chairman of Repeal the Ca-sino Deal.
Boston and Mohegan Sun reached an agreement in prin-

ciple in which the casino op-erator would pay the city to offset impacts of its planned development at Suffolk Downs, but would not permit a vote on the deal, according to the Globe. Figures on the deal were not released and a deal was not officially announced.
Earlier this year, the Mas-sachusetts Gaming Commis-sion rejected Walsh’s argu-ment that Boston was a host community to the planned casino in Revere and another proposed by Wynn Resorts in Everett. Walsh had said Boston residents deserved a vote.
In November, voters will get their say on the state’s 2011 gaming law when a bal-lot question will ask people whether to repeal it.

The boys care coming back to town.
The Boston Bruins an-nounced on Tuesday that the team will build a new practice facility at a massive develop-ment under construction in the Allston and Brighton neighborhoods.
Boston Bruins President Cam Neely said in a statement that the team signed a letter of intent for a long-term lease with the developer of Boston Landing, a 14-acre project that will also be home to the world headquarters of New Balance.
“Since joining the Bruins in a front office capacity, a goal of mine has been to move the Bruins into a first-class practice facility and this agreement moves us closer to accomplish-ing that goal,” Neely said in a statement.
The agreement includes ice time and 25,000 square feet of dedicated locker room, training and office space. Construction is ex-pected to begin next spring and the facility is expected to

12 years of debtsI had debts piling up for over 12 years, and to make things worse, I couldn’t hold a steady job. I received the Anointing with the Oil and determined a financial blessing in my life. Today all my debts are paid, and I have the job I wanted that pays me more than the ones I lost.
Anger was destroying meI had anger bottled up inside of me against someone that had hurt me. I tried to put it behind me, but I couldn’t, It got to the point of me wanting to kill them. I received the Anointing Oil and started to anoint my head, and prayed for myself. That’s when I started to see things differently and I was able to forgive. Today I have nothing against them.

Mel Gibson: ‘I’ve done what I need to do’
Guys, seriously. Mel Gibson is super-tired of everyone always bringing up his past troubles — and by “troubles,” we mean that time he got popped for driving under the influence in Malibu, called a female cop some very colorful names and had a few things to say about Jewish people. But that
was, like, a long time ago. “It’s behind me. It’s an 8-year-old story,” Gibson calmly explained to the Hollywood Reporter. “It keeps coming up like a rerun. But I’ve dealt with it, and I’ve dealt with it responsibly. I’ve worked on myself for anything I am culpable for. All the neces-sary mea culpas have been made copious times, so for this question to keep coming up, it’s kind of like … I’m sorry they feel that way, but I’ve done what I need to do.”
Also on the list of things Gibson doesn’t want to discuss? Upcoming projects: “Because every time I do, somebody else goes and does it. It’s a kind of industrial espionage thing.” Makes you wonder why he even sat down for the interview at all. Oh, right: “Expendables 3” comes out next month.
Lawrence can be as classy and goofy as she wants Jennifer Lawrence attended the Christian Dior couture show in Paris looking lovely as always, though she did almost fl ash side-boob upon arrival. Not that she was at all fazed. Later, with a strategically placed leather jacket added to her outfi t, she showed off her trademark goofi ness and joked around with “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson.

Vergara has a new man Sofi a Vergara is reportedly dating “True Blood” star Joe Manganiello, according to People magazine. “They just started hanging out,” a source says. Manganiello made no secret about fi nd-ing Vergara attractive while she was engaged to Nick Loeb, though. “There was a picture someone snapped at the White House Cor-respondents’ Dinner where they caught me looking at Sofi a Vergara’s butt,” he previously told People. “I don’t go after other people’s women. She’s got a guy. If she was single, I would be like, poof!” And now he is apparently like, poof!

ACTRESS HALLE BERRY
FILMMAGIC
Halle Berry needs space
So what does it take to lure Oscar-winning film star Halle Berry to television? Well, the name Steven Spielberg doesn’t hurt. “A name like that, you don’t really sneeze at,” Berry says of the director. “I know the quality of his work, and I know that he loves this sort of genre. These supernatural kind of stories are right in his wheelhouse.” But there was more to “Extant” — her new series about an astronaut who returns from a yearlong solo space mission to find herself mysteriously pregnant — that enticed Berry. Here, she shares the details.
She can relate to playing
a mom: “This was a character when I first read it that was so relatable to me. I felt like it was just in my DNA,” Berry says. “While I’m not an astronaut or scientist — far, far from it — I still had an understanding about the human quality of this woman and her

struggle to not only find time for herself — which is what she loves to do, our Molly goes into space for a year — but also to be a good mother. That’s the struggle I have struggled with since my kids were born.”
Everyone else is doing it:
“I feel like the best writing now is on television. That’s been a real reality that I think all actors have been talking about for years now,” she says. “If you are an artist you just want to do good work that inspires you, that ignites you, that makes you want to wake up in the morning and go to work and that’s what this series and this character has done for me.”
She was stoked to try
zero-gravity: “Luckily, because I had been Storm [in ‘X-Men’], I was used to flying,” she says. “I did actually take a real zero-G flight, so I have really experienced being weightless. I can really under-
stand why astronauts love to go up there and love
to live in that medium and experience. It’s as close to being a bird and having
that kind of freedom I think one can ever get. But I also have to say by 15 times going
up and down and going through that, I did, you know, vomit. My body
was done dealing.”
Binge-watch
Berry’s serial tastes
While it’s taken a while for Halle Berry to make her way to a TV series, she’s been a fan of them for quite some time. So what does Berry like to plop down in front of when at home with husband Olivier Martinez and their children? “’The Good Wife’ has been, since the day it came on, one of my
favorites,” she says. “I was a ‘Girls’ watcher. I even made my husband watch ‘Girls.’ He would never admit that. You’ve got to do what the wife does sometimes.
“I watch ‘Game of Thrones.’ That was a show that I found really interesting.”

9WELLBEING
Many people experience tem-porary eye-related problems such as pink eye (conjuncti-vitis) or a scratched cornea. But there are a number of conditions that constitute true eye emergencies which, if not treated promptly, could result in permanent loss of vision. In these cases, seeking emergency medical attention from an ophthalmologist is essential to preserving or recovering your vision.
Retinal detachmentThis can occur when the sensory
layer within the eye lifts away from
its inner surface, resulting in abnor-
mal electrical impulses (fl ashes) and
debris to fl oat inside the eye and
possibly a wavy quality to vision. A
laser procedure may be necessary.
THE SIGNS OF VISION TROUBLE
Sports-related eye injuries could cause serious complications, such as a detached retina. Here, Swiss defender Steve von Bergen is helped off the fi eld during a World Cup match against France. / GETTY IMAGES
Chemical injuries
Caustic liquid that is either acidic or
worse, highly alkaline, may result in a
chemical burn. Immediately rinse with
cool water before seeking help.
Acute glaucoma
The fl uid pressure within the eye can
suddenly increase, which may result
in blurred vision, redness, nausea and
vomiting, the appearance of a halolike
glow around lights and a hazy cornea.
Medication to lower the eye pressure
and even surgery can be eff ective.
Occlusion
The eye’s main blood vessels can
become blocked, causing sudden and
painless blurring or loss of vision.
Treatments include medications,
injections or lasers.
Don’t touch!
Mechanical InjuriesRupturing or perforation of the eyeball can happen from a hard poke or hit while playing sports or from a piece of debris entering the eye at high speed, such as an errant shaving from a workshop tool. Wearing pro-tective goggles or a shield is essential to prevent these injuries; once they occur, they require immediate oph-thalmological evaluation, antibiotics to prevent infec-tion and possible surgery. Do not touch your eye if you suspect there is something stuck in it, as this will only worsen the injury.

Men are victims of domestic violence, tooRe: ‘What kind of man are
you?’ (Metro, July 7) While it is laudable that Alexsandro Palombo is attempting to prevent domestic violence with depictions of cartoon couples with a woman’s black eye, I fi nd the lack of male victims to be sexist and misleading. Dr. Murray Strauss of UNH has compiled over 200 studies showing the incidence of physical violence between
men and women to be roughly equal and frequently bi-direc-tional in intimate relationships. Violence is a method of control used by both sexes, not a male characteristic. I fi nd the title of the article to be sexist and misandrist. S. HAMILTON, VIA EMAIL
Birth control has legitimate purposesRe: ‘Pursuit of pleasure not
protected’ (Metro, July 3-6)
If letter writer Justin Dobbs is a man, as I presume, then it’s with poor grace that he mocks women who want to “do it” without getting pregnant — after all, that’s what men have always done. And no, the Hobby Lobby decision won’t induce women to get married — after all, many married women want to space their pregnancies, too.ALAN R. BROWN, VIA EMAIL
“You will do as my religion says, or else,” is always a viola-tion of freedom of religion. Sometimes it’s a big violation, when the “or else” part is hor-
rifi c, and the “you will do” part is repugnant to the person’s own religion. Other times, it’s a small violation, as when the “or else” part is merely some money, and the “you will do” part is merely the selection of one form of contraception over another. Big or small, it’s still a violation of freedom of religion, not a constitutionally protected exercise of it.DAN WYLIE-SEARS, VIA EMAIL

After the Revolution host the Chicago Fire on Saturday at Gillette Stadium, New Eng-land will officially be halfway through the 2014 MLS regular season.
As you can tell by a 7-7-2 re-cord, it’s been an up and down campaign thus far for the Revo-lution. The good news for them is that the Eastern Conference looks much easier to navigate than the loaded Western Con-ference.
Only four teams in the East have winning records, which is how New England find them-selves surprisingly in good shape. They are currently in
third place — three points behind Sporting KC and five points behind DC United with a game in hand on both — with the top five making the play-offs.
Including Saturday, 10 of New England’s final 18 match-
es will be at Gillette Stadium, where they have gone 4-2-1. The Revolution have a goal differential of plus-6 at home and minus-6 on the road (3-5-1). Thanks to the scheduling quirks that were a byproduct of the World Cup, New England
hasn’t won a match since May 24. That sounds worse than it is, but the Revs have dropped their last four matches and have been outscored 9-2 in that span, including back-to-back shutouts. They were the top team in the Eastern Conference before this recent slide.
The slide may have hit its peak on July 4 with a disap-pointing 2-1 loss at Real Salt Lake. The Revolution surren-dered two penalty kicks sand-wiched around Darrius Barnes’ first goal of the season.
“I’m not going to talk about the referee other than the fact that from start to finish it was a little bit cynical,” head coach Jay Heaps said. “But then again, we fought hard, but we’ve got to do a little bit better job.”
MLS. New England will hit the midway point this weekend, looking to get back to winning.

World Cup preview: Netherlands vs. ArgentinaThe polarizing Lionel Messi and Argentina take the stage Wednesday at 4 p.m. on ESPN as the two-time World Cup champions take on the Netherlands, a country that has come close several times but has never brought home hardware.
The Dutch are led by Robin van Persie, whose 13 attempts in the tourna-ment are only two less than Messi.
Holland also has Arjen Robben, another potent off ensive weapon (scoring two goals and an assist). EVAN MACY

Germany nets seven goals in record-setting blowoutThe fi rst 29 minutes of Ger-many’s 7-1 victory over Brazil in the fi rst World Cup semifi -nal looked as if it would bring the host country to tears.
In less than a third of the game’s playing time, the Ger-mans completely walloped Brazil’s defense into submis-sion, becoming the fi rst team to score fi ve goals in less than 30 minutes in World Cup history.
Brazil also became the fi rst host country to lose by more than four in a World Cup game. The only other time Brazil allowed seven goals was back in 1934.
Toni Kroos and substitute Andre Schurrle each scored a pair of goals in the victory for the German national team.
Finally, in stoppage time, Brazil avoided the shutout when Oscar scored, but of course the damage had already been done, and Ger-many punched its ticket to face the winner of Wednes-day’s Netherlands-Argentina contest in Sunday’s World Cup fi nal. METRO
