Busan International Foreign School, founded in 1983, offers
a post-secondary preparatory curriculum for mainlyexpatriate and some national students. English is thelanguage of instruction for all students Preschool throughGrade 12. High school students at BIFS participate in two ofthe world’s most rigorous secondary school curricula:Cambridge University’s International General Certificate ofSecondary Education (IGCSE) in Grades 9-10 and may pursuethe International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in Grades 11-12.All graduates of BIFS earn a U.S. high school diploma.
BIFS is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schoolsand Colleges (WASC) and the Council of InternationalSchools (CIS). In addition, it is authorized to offer theprogrammes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and ofthe Cambridge International Center (CIE) and is recognizedas a College Board testing center for the PSAT, SAT andAdvanced Placement Program (AP).
SCHOOL CALENDAR
The first semester begins in the third week of August andends in mid-January. The second semester begins the thirdweek of January and ends the third week of June. Thereare approximately 36 weeks (180 days) in the school year.
GRADING SYSTEMBIFS uses a 4.25 point scale for its GPA purposes, which isweighted an additional .25 point for all IB Standard Level(SL) courses, including Theory of Knowledge, and .50point for all IB Higher Level (HL) courses. BIFS does notprovide individual class rankings; yet, upon request, BIFSwill provide universities with an approximate percentilestanding to assist with university admissions.

CREDITS AND GRADUATIONA minimum of 25 credits is required to receive the BIFSHigh School Diploma. A credit is awarded for the successfulcompletion of an annual academic year course. All IB HLcourses receive 1.5 credits awarded per year (minimum 240hours timetabled instructional time over two years). Astudent must complete a total of 40 community servicehours during the four years of high school to meet theCommunity Service credit requirement. The minimumdistribution of credits for the post-secondary preparatoryBIFS High School Diploma must include:
