SCHOOL & COMMUNITY Enrollment (Grades 9-12): 149 Number of Middle/High Faculty: 45 Grade 12 Class Size: 22 Busan International Foreign School, founded in 1983, offers a post-secondary preparatory curriculum for mainly expatriate and some national students. English is the language of instruction for all students Preschool through Grade 12. High school students at BIFS participate in two of the world’s most rigorous secondary school curricula: Cambridge University’s International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in Grades 9-10 and may pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in Grades 11-12. All graduates of BIFS earn a U.S. high school diploma. BIFS is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). In addition, it is authorized to offer the programmes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and of the Cambridge International Center (CIE) and is recognized as a College Board testing center for the PSAT, SAT and Advanced Placement Program (AP). SCHOOL CALENDAR The first semester begins in the third week of August and ends in mid-January. The second semester begins the third week of January and ends the third week of June. There are approximately 36 weeks (180 days) in the school year. GRADING SYSTEM BIFS uses a 4.25 point scale for its GPA purposes, which is weighted an additional .25 point for all IB Standard Level (SL) courses, including Theory of Knowledge, and .50 point for all IB Higher Level (HL) courses. BIFS does not provide individual class rankings; yet, upon request, BIFS will provide universities with an approximate percentile standing to assist with university admissions.
