2015-16

With an Olympic games on the horizon, the 2015-16 Kansas swimming and diving team will take training to a new level in the upcoming months in hopes to prepare the squad for an eventful year

The Jayhawks are already off to a successful start as senior Chelsie Miller and freshman Libby Walker have both turned in Olympic Trial cuts previously this summer While a large portion of the team will be looking to punch their own ticket to Omaha, Nebraska for Olympic Trials, Kansas’ international swimmers Pia Pavlic and Yulduz Kuchkarova could automatically qualify for the Rio de Janeiro games with the right times in several long course competitions this year

“This is a big year for the sport because it’s an Olympic year,” head coach Clark Campbell said “The training is going to ramp up pretty quick, usually we have a slower lead into the season but this time it will be fairly fast ”

Along with a rigorous training schedule in preparation for the upcoming summer, KU is hoping to find its way back into the top-two at the Big 12 Championships as well as increase its representation at the NCAA meet

Returning all but four athletes - two swimmers and two divers - the experienced squad has its sights set high for the season In addition to the multiple veterans, Kansas will introduce six talented newcomers to the roster, five of which are freshmen

“We only lost two swimmers from last year’s team,” Campbell said “It’s ‘game on’ because now we have six new ones who are at a really high level In what little we lost, numbers wise, and then how many we have brought in, makes for a very good environment and training ”

While the Jayhawks are hopeful for a successful year in the water, they also have goals to attain outside of their performances in the pool As a unit, the team will be working toward improving its culture Campbell believes that Kansas swimming

and diving has created a good team culture, but it’s looking for a “championship culture ”

In addition to developing stronger team unity, they will also work toward building self-confidence on an individual level

“With more self-confidence we are better athletes, better students and we have a better culture because of it,” Campbell said “I think if we draw on those two things, improve on our culture and our confidence then that will make the team better in and out of the water ”

FreeStyle• Nika Fellows, Sammie Schurig and Lindsey Manning make up a large portion of the

distance swimmers All three turned in top-six finishes in their respected events at the Big 12 Championship meet • Haley Molden will look to build on an impressive resume during her senior campaign, after recording a career-best mark at Big 12’s and earning a top-eight finish in each of her 200-yard swims last year • Four-time Oklahoma state champion, Breonna Barker will contribute speed to the Jayhawk sprints • After recording the team’s fastest 50-yard freestyle time at the conference meet, junior Leah Pfitzer hopes to build off last year’s strong finish • Sophomore Hannah Driscoll placed in the top-16 in all three individual freestyle events she competed in at the 2015 Big 12 Championships

• Sophomore Briana Balsbough joins the Kansas squad after swimming at San Diego State for a year

Campbell on Molden:“Pretty much top to bottom, from the 50- to the 1,650- we’re going to be pretty strong Haley (Molden) had a tremendous summer She had lifetime best times and came within a whisker of qualifying for Olympic trials We’re really excited about what she has done ”

BacKStroKe• After turning in a pair of runner-up finishes at Big 12’s last year, along with earning her way into the Kansas record books, junior Yulya Kuchkarova has proven to be a force in the water • Freshman Taylor Sieperda spent the summer getting acquainted with Robinson Natatorium and will bring a fresh look to the backstroke events • Sophomore Madison Hutchison earned career-best times in three backstroke sprints at last year’s conference meet • Placing in the top-six in every 100-yard swim last season, junior Hannah Angell adds an element of speed to the team • Senior captain Laura Bilsborrow concluded last season with three career-best times at the 2015 Big 12 Championships

Campbell on Kuchkarova:“Yulya is our go-to person, she had a great summer She went to the world championships and then to the world cup She’s going to be full of energy and have a really good season ”

ButterFly• Three freshmen: Haley Bishop, Cassaundra Pino and Libby Walker, will add depth to the event • Veteran Pia Pavlic has proven to be a consistent scorer for the Jayhawks over the last two years and will look to continue the trend for her junior season • Sophomores Anna Peirano turned a career-best time in last season’s final meet and will look to build off the success this year • Zoya Wahlstrom has become a steady performer in the butterfly events

Campbell on the butterfly events: “The butterfly last year was a little thin, but this year I think it will be a big strength for us ”

BreaStStroKe• After earning a spot at the top of Kansas’ all-time records for her performance in the 100-yard breaststroke at Big 12’s, senior captain Bryce Hinde will look to take her talents to the next level • Gretchen Pocisk returns for her junior season after setting career-best times in an impressive outing at the Big 12 Championships • Sophomore Lydia Pocisk, younger sister to Gretchen, turned in three top-10 finishes at the conference meet in her rookie season

Campbell on Lydia Pocisk:“Lydia ripped it up last year She was a really a big get for us ”

8 SWIMMING & DIVING2015-16

InDIVIDual MeDley• Back-to-back NCAA appearances and a summer of training with some on the nation’s most elite swimmers make for a promising senior campaign for Chelsie Miller • Recording top-eight finishes in both the 200- and 400-yard IM at Big 12’s and nominated as Freshman of the Year by Kansas’ swimming and diving staff, sophomore Madison Straight adds versatility to the Jayhawks

Campbell on Miller: “Chelsie will be leading the way in the IM’s this year With the summer that she had and the experiences that she’s been exposed to, I really think that she knows what it’s going to take to get to the next level ”

DIVInG• Junior Graylyn Jones recorded career-high scores in the one-meter, three-meter and platform throughout the course of last season She also earned a pair of 10th-place finishes in the one- and three-meter competitions at the conference meet Jones’ performance at Big 12’s qualified her for NCAA Zones • The only Jayhawk to advance to the finals on the platform at Big 12’s, sophomore Nadia Khechfe would go on to represent Kansas at the 2015 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships

Campbell on the divers:“Graylyn and Nadia have both responded very well to Gabe (Downey) and are ready to step it up We are going to be a little thin in diving with only having the two of them, but our quality is really good ”

The Jayhawks host events inside historic Robinson Natatorium, which has served as the home for

Kansas swimming and diving for more than 40 years. The facility has gone through numerous upgrades

throughout the years. The current structure features a 25-yard, six-lane competition pool; a 25-meter,

1. THE nICKnAME: JAYHAwK The University of Kansas is the home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers The term “Jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848 Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter

2. THE ALMA MATEr In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters ” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle ”

3. CAMPAnILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus

4. THE K rInG The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy

5. wAVInG THE wHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field

6. THE rOCK CHALK CHAnT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E H S Bailey, a professor of chemistry On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club

“give The woRld The besT you’ve goT ANd ThebesT will come bAcK To you.”

Jayhawk Memories

“I am forever a Jayhawk and forever changed because of my experience swimming for the University of Kansas This incredible program gave me the opportunity to maximize my potential not only as a swimmer, but as a student and as an individual The coaches and the staff are truly unique because they care about each and every person that is a part of the Jayhawk family Excellence is something that is not only expected of student-athletes here, but is demonstrated to us by our support staff on a daily basis The University of Kansas is a place where I established life-long relationships, while working hard in the pool and in the classroom It is also somewhere that I will always cherish because I learned and grew so much through all of my hard work, competition and fun Rock Chalk Jayhawk!”

“I was recruited by more than 20 different Division I universities when I was applying to college Through my experiences, I found that many of them offered me what I was looking for, but it became clear that I was looking for something more than just a good program and quality school What I was searching for was a group of people who would serve as a family that would help me grow as a person, a swimmer and a student After speaking with (head coach) Clark (Campbell) and (assistant coach) Jen (Fox) for the first time, it did not take long to realize that these people were the ones I needed to trust in and believe Once I stepped foot on campus, my experiences were much more than I could have imagined Girls on the team were welcoming and nice, coaches were respectful and dedicated, and the place was beautiful and felt like home ”

Coming off of a season filled with milestones and historic performances the previous year, the Kansas swimming and diving program posted another impressive outing during the 2014-15 campaign Under the direction of head coach Clark Campbell, the Jayhawks finished the year with a 9-3 dual meet record, the best record since the 2008-09 season and the fifth time Campbell has led a team to nine or more victories KU’s dominance in the pool brought Campbell to a 167-92 dual meet record throughout his coaching career

Campbell’s laid-back and genuine demeanor helps build close relationships with each of his swimmers outside of the pool Not only does he care about making his swimmers better in the pool, but also in the classroom Campbell’s team has been named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a national Academic All-American Team, earning a team GPA of 3 0 or higher, all 26 semesters he has managed the program

Attention to detail is what makes Campbell’s practices productive Every set he organizes for the swimmers has scientific reasoning behind why it works and will ultimately lead to success His team at KU has placed in the top-five at the Big 12 Championships all 13 seasons At Kansas, Campbell has coached 18 swimmers to NCAA Championship appearances

During the 2013-14 season Campbell coached Kansas’ first Big 12 Champion, Chelsie Miller, to victory in the 400-yard individual medley In the same season, the decorated coach also led the Jayhawks to their first top-two finish in 18 years

Currently in his 14th season at Kansas, Campbell ended 2013-14 with a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championships, the Jayhawks’ fourth top-three finish

during Campbell’s tenure at Kansas KU broke four school records, while an additional three swimmers carved their names into the all-time record book The Jayhawks earned an average GPA of 3 36 and placed 11 members on the All-Big 12 Academic Team

coachInG BeFore KanSaSPrior to his appointment at KU, Campbell coached at the University of Evansville for three years There, he led several athletes to success at the national level and helped the program reach new heights The Purple Aces established school records in all 19 men’s and women’s events while Campbell was at the helm of the program in 1998 Those top marks included 12 Missouri Valley Conference records During his four years at Evansville, his squads were named Academic All-America by the CSCAA all eight semesters In 2000, Campbell was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year

From 1995-98, Campbell served as the assistant men’s swimming coach at the University of Minnesota During his time in Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers captured Big Ten conference titles in 1996 and 1998 while earning top-15

finishes all three years at the NCAA Championships

Campbell served as the head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at West Virginia Wesleyan from 1993-1995 and directed the school into a top-10 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics program in just two years He was named the NAIA Swimming Coach of the Year in 1995

perSonalCampbell competed as a professional triathlete for seven years before his coaching career began After turning professional at the age of 19, he became one of the most consistent top-10 finishers on the pro circuit During his career, Campbell was self-coached He was the 1986 National Long Course Champion and the 1990 runner-up at the United States Triathlon Series National Championship

Campbell received a Bachelor’s degree from Kansas in 1993, and a Master’s in physical education/coaching from West Virginia University in 1995 Campbell and his wife, Cassie, have three children: Canaan, Cierra and Claire

ExPErIEnCE SIXTH YEAR

POSITIOn CHANCELLOR

Since arriving at the University of Kansas in 2009, Bernadette Gray-Little has advanced KU’s mission of lifting students and society by educating leaders, building healthy communities, and making discoveries that change the world

Through the Bold Aspirations strategic plan, KU is changing the way it prepares students for success It’s fostering research and scholarship across all disciplines, and sharing the benefits of a flagship university with the state and world

Gray-Little led the effort to create new admission standards for the University of Kansas These new standards take effect in 2016 and will give students and families a more accurate picture of what it takes to be successful at a research university

Under Chancellor Gray-Little’s leadership, the university has also revamped financial aid, creating four-year renewable scholarships and expanding the Jayhawk Generations Scholarship And it has launched its first university-wide curriculum, the KU Core, which incorporates both classes and experiences, making KU a leader among its national peers

Gray-Little has also been instrumental to Far Above: The Campaign for Kansas, KU Endowment’s $1 2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign Additionally, the university’s Changing for Excellence initiative is making administrative operations more efficient, with the savings being invested in education and research

As chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Salina and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder

Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010 She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research

Prior to becoming KU’s 17th Chancellor, Gray-Little held leadership positions at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, including executive vice chancellor and provost

ExPErIEnCE FIFTH YEAR

POSITIOn ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Dr Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart But

when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced

the Hays, Kan , native as KU’s Athletics Director January

3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches

That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there

with them – and their student-athletes – every step of the

way For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-

athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate

athletics

Since Zenger’s arrival at KU, those coaches and

student-athletes have raised the bar with outstanding

performances on both the conference and national

stages Highlights include:

• A National Championship for the Women’s

Outdoor Track & Field team, and seven individual

national championships

• An NCAA Final Four appearance for Men’s Basketball

and five more Big 12 regular-season Championships,

raising that streak of titles to 11

• Two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances for Women’s

Basketball

• An NCAA Sweet 16 (and three straight NCAA

appearances) for Volleyball

• NCAA Championship appearances for Softball

(twice), Baseball, Soccer and Women’s Golf

• A National Coach-of-the-Year award (Stanley

Redwine women’s track and field) and several Big

12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year awards - Bill

Self, men’s basketball (twice), Ray Bechard,

volleyball (twice), and Clark Campbell, swimming

and diving

During the last two academic years – 2013-14 and 2014-

15 – 11 KU teams were represented in NCAA postseason

competition, the most KU appearances in one year in

more than a decade

Zenger has spearheaded a tremendous upgrade in

Kansas Athletics’ facilities as well – improvements he

expects will help KU’s coaches and student-athletes

continue their run of outstanding performances Most

notable among these is the completion of Rock Chalk

Park, which contains new, state-of-the-art stadiums

for KU’s Track & Field, Soccer and Softball programs

Memorial Stadium has received a facelift as well In

summer 2014 the track surrounding the football field

was removed, replaced with new artificial turf, bringing

the turf to within 10 feet of the stands In addition,

construction is underway on the DeBruce Center, the

permanent home of James Naismith’s original “Rules of

Basket Ball,” adjacent to historic Allen Fieldhouse Finally,

the beautiful new McCarthy Hall, which houses the men’s

basketball team and an equal number of distinguished

non-student-athletes, opened its doors for the 2015-16

academic year

Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics

director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU

Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley

Conference The Redbirds won a conference-leading

seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and

captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three

years ISU also reached highs in fundraising, academics

and community service during Zenger’s tenure there

Zenger’s career took several turns before landing in

athletics administration After playing football at Fort

Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, and

even before he finished his undergraduate degree at

Kansas State, he was pursuing his dream of coaching by

assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan ) High

School His first college football coaching job came at

Drake University right after graduation; he then joined Bill

Snyder’s staff at Kansas State, serving in key roles as

assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football

operations

It became evident, though, that more than coaching was

in store for Zenger He came to KU to earn his Ph D in

educational policy and leadership, while strengthening

his understanding of university leadership at the highest

levels

Still, coaching stayed in his blood He joined the football

staff at the University of South Florida and then at the

University of Wyoming before returning to Kansas State,

eventually serving as KSU’s associate athletics director

for development He held that position until becoming

Athletics Director at Illinois State in 2005

Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I

Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement He also

served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship

Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a

member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division

I FCS Athletic Directors Association He is married to the

former Pam McAnarney; they have three children: Luke,

Abby and Jake

2014-15 season review2014-15 reSultSComing off a season with a program-best finish at the 2014 Big 12

Championship, the Kansas swimming and diving team had lofty expectations to live up to After losing seven seniors, the Jayhawks turned to the nine freshmen and 10 returning Big 12 finalists Although Kansas failed to reach its ultimate goal, due in part to a tough start at the conference meet, the team was able to strengthen its overall dual meet record to 9-3 and finish third at the 2015 Big 12 Championship, the end of a productive season

Talent shined early as the Jayhawks opened the regular season in irregular fashion at the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s “freestyle festival” (Oct 13) The unconventional meet format consisted of eight total events with each team allowed to count just three competitors per event toward the team score and each individual athlete only allowed to score in one event It didn’t seem to affect the Jayhawks much as KU saw victories in the four individual events, two relays and one of the two diving events Head coach Clark Campbell noted sophomore Lindsay Manning’s improvement early on

“Lindsay Manning was terrific,” Campbell said “Both times at UNO were faster than what she went at the 2014 Big 12 meet We knew she had to keep rolling, training hard and racing well She’s a totally different person than she was last year ”

The first Robinson Natatorium home meet featured men’s and women’s competition in a two-day double dual against the Missouri State Bears and Denver Pioneers (Oct 24-25) Overall, eight pool records were taken down, seven of which were on the men’s side Standout swims by Haley Molden and Deanna Marks helped Kansas defeat Missouri State, 277-75, but couldn’t bring the Jayhawks past Denver, who spent portions of the 2015 season ranked in the top-25, 204-138

“My goal was to go faster than I did at UNO,” Molden said “I did, and I was really excited I wanted to go 1:52 or faster in my 200 and :52 or faster in my 100 That’s what I did and I was so happy with it ”

Marks posted two top-three performances in the 100- and 200-yard

butterfly events On the second day of the double dual, Marks and Caroline Patterson were honored as seniors for their dedication and commitment to the Kansas program

In its first Big 12 matchup, Kansas hosted TCU in a double-dual with North Dakota (Nov 1) After coming off a tough loss to Denver, Kansas faced stiff competition against the Horned Frogs, who just one year prior had defeated the Jayhawks, 176-124 The competition fueled KU, as the team won all but three events in a double-dual sweep “We performed at a very high level,” Campbell said “We had a lot of standout performances and it was a really good way to start the season ”

Another shot at redemption came for the Jayhawks as they hosted the University of Illinois in a televised event, Nov 8 In a meet spanning over two and a half hours, it came down to the last three-hundredths of a second, as Yulduz Kuchkarova edged out the Illini in the final leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay to win the meet, 154-146

“We had a solid meet from top to bottom,” Campbell said “You want to get to that point where it’s going to come down to the last relay We got it there, Yulduz made the touch, and we got the win It was a great way to end ”

The streak of confidence continued through to the third annual Kansas Classic (Nov 21-23) as the Jayhawks took first overall in a five-team field with 1,283 points Big 12 foe Iowa State finished second (1,093), followed by Northern Iowa (441), Nebraska-Omaha (378) and Tabor College (146)

“Schedule-wise, it was pretty much just like what we would see at conference,” Campbell said “We tried to swim and get our best time possible in the morning, and then at night went for glory ”

The glory of the win was paired with 70 new career-best times posted at the Classic, along with two new meet records in the 200-medley and 800-yard freestyle relays

Finishing up the 2014 calendar year, the swimming and diving team split up in December as Hannah Driscoll, Bryce Hinde, Chelsie Miller and Lydia Pocisk had the opportunity to join America’s best at the USA Winter Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina (Dec 4-6) At the meet, Miller—who, at the time, was honored as Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week—represented Kansas well as she finished with a silver medal in the 400-yard IM Driscoll also posted her career-best and second-fastest team time in the 100-yard freestyle at the national meet, clocking in at 51 22

Meanwhile, the rest of the team held a time trial event at the Jayhawk Open (Dec 6), where Kuchkarova suited up and carved her name on the Robinson Natatorium record board, breaking Iuliia Kuzhill’s record from 2010 in 1:57 83

“The beginning of this year was really different because I was training alone for the Asian Games,” Kuchkarova said “It was exciting to be back with all of my teammates It was a huge help to have my teammates encouraging me and helping me train hard and keep up with them ”

Kansas kicked off the new calendar year with its annual training trip, this year in California The trip began in Los Angeles with a double-dual against UCLA and San Diego (Jan 10), where the team fell 168-126 to UCLA—No 8 nationally, at the time—but topped San Diego, 158 5-89 5 The Jayhawks then traveled south to San Diego for one week of outdoor training before starting the spring semester

In the last double-dual meet of the season, KU traveled to Liberty, Missouri to take on Truman State and William Jewell (Jan 24) Seven pool records fell and all but one event was won by the Jayhawks, who swept the Bulldogs, 164-90, and the Cardinals, 169-83

“It was so exciting and motivated me for conference,” said Manning, who won three individual events and set a new pool record in the 800-meter

freestyle at the double-dual “I was really happy with where we all were at as a team ”

Kansas returned home to battle perhaps one of its toughest opponents of the season, as it matched up with Arkansas on Jan 31 Fast times and close finishes, most of which went the Razorbacks’ way, brought Arkansas to a 194-105 victory over the Jayhawks Although not the ideal outcome for KU, the meet provided top-quality competition for the Jayhawks prepping for the upcoming Big 12 Conference Championship

“Some meets you’re the hammer, other meets you’re the nail,” Campbell said “Against Arkansas, we were the nail, but we competed really well In dual meets, the final score really doesn’t matter—it’s all about the process and competing Our girls did that We lost a few touches, and that can add up, but we were still really pleased with how we competed Those are great meets to help prepare us later on for Big 12s ”

The Jayhawks rounded out the regular season at home with long-time Big 12 rival Iowa State in a two-day dual meet (Feb 6-7) Eight season-best times for the Kansas team, the fastest medley relay at a dual meet this season, and event wins by Miller in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Molden in the 200-yard freestyle and Kuchkarova in the 100-yard backstroke solidified a lead over the Cyclones, 94-56, after the first eight events Although not a win, freshman diver Nadia Khechfe qualified for the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships, scoring 280 20 on the three-meter boards

The momentum continued through the second day as Kansas took the victory, 169-131 The win closed the door on the dual meet season, as Kansas finished 9-3

“We have really developed a nice rivalry with Iowa State,” Campbell said “Iowa State and us are the last remaining members from the Big Eight We have very similar programs and both teams really respect each other It’s a good rivalry that has carried over in several sports, and definitely (includes) swimming and diving I thought that meet was a good preview of what was to come at conference ”

Kansas entered the 2015 Big 12 Championships (Feb 25-28) with confidence as the 2014 runner-up and a winning regular-season record The excitement and confidence was quickly changed during the first event, as a disqualification on the Kansas 200-yard medley relay was announced With just two events on the first day, a solid start was crucial to how things might unfold in later days In the second event, the 800-yard freestyle relay, swam a close race to finish third

Things turned around on the second day, as Miller broke her own school record in the 200-yard individual medley, dropping her time from 1:58 98 to 1:58 37 KU placed Sammie Schurig and Madison Straight in the top-eight heat for the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM, respectively, and an additional 12 Jayhawk swimmers and divers placed in the top-16 to score points for the team The 400-yard medley relay also gave KU a boost into solidifying fourth place, placing second overall

The Jayhawks climbed into third place on day three, as two records fell and four all-time top-five swims were recorded Miller continued the record-breaking streak, lowering her previous 400-yard IM record from 4:07 97 down to 4:05 67, placing second In the 100-yard breaststroke, Bryce Hinde clocked in at 1:01 98 to secure her place as the school record-holder by three-hundredths of a second Freshman Lydia Pocisk also made her mark, swimming 1:02 21 to claim the third-fastest 100-yard breaststroke time in school history and place seventh overall

Two more all-time top-five times went down in the 100-yard backstroke, as Kuchkarova earned a silver medal with a time of 53 41 Kuchkarova’s new career-best time ranks second in KU history Hannah Angell also set a new career best, finishing fourth overall in a time of 55 34—the fifth-fastest time by a KU swimmer

Kuchkarova and Miller earned two more silver medals on day four, in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard butterfly, respectively Miller’s performance in the fly lowered her school record from 1:58 58 to 1:58 53 In the diving well, Khechfe advanced to finals, placing seventh overall with a final score of 180 60 In the end, it was not enough to overcome Iowa State and the Jayhawks finished third behind Texas (1,082 5) and the Cyclones (618 5) with 589 points West Virginia claimed fourth place (481) and TCU (458), fifth

“It was a really good meet,” Campbell said “We were there physically, but we made too many mental mistakes With our team being 75 percent freshmen and sophomores, I’m really excited to see what the future holds We’ll use this to motivate us and be better next year ”

Kansas divers Graylyn Jones and Khechfe continued the season at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships March 9-11 On the three-meter boards, Jones placed 40th with a score of 223 30 and Khechfe, 45th (210 55) Both divers increased rankings on the one-meter boards, as Jones placed 34th with a score of 235 25 and Khechfe (228 80) placed 42nd On the platform, Khechfe was the only diver representing KU Khechfe scored 150 60, finishing 29th

“I’m most happy with the progress I was able to see in them,” then-interim

diving coach Gabe Downey said “When I came in, it felt like they weren’t very confident Now, they’ve gone up against some of the top competitors in the country, and were able to show poise and confidence I’ve seen a huge improvement They train better; they’re working harder and doing more things to be successful They’re doing a great job taking strides toward where they want to be and where they need to be ”

Miller went on as the only swimmer to represent Kansas in her second appearance at the NCAA Championships (March 19-21) in the 200- and 400-yard IM, as well as the 1,650-yard freestyle

On the first day, Miller’s time of 1:59 97 in the 200-yard IM placed 55th overall Continuing onto the second day, she clinched a 13th-place finish and her second All-American title in the 400-yard individual medley, with a time of 4:08 77 Miller concluded the 2014-15 season for the Jayhawks swimming the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 16:17 02 to place 26th

Miller extended her season by competing at the USA Open Water Nationals (April 24), swimming her first 10k race in 2:11:11 86 The junior placed 21st overall

“Overall, it was a really good season,” Campbell said “Every year you have ups and downs We were disappointed with the final score (at the Big 12 Championship), but the way we swam and competed all year was very successful ”

Losing just two seniors, the swimming and diving team will return 13 top-eight finishers from the Big 12 Championships The team will turn to five incoming freshmen to help build upon a strong foundation for the 2015-16 season The expectations remain high, and the Jayhawks have even more motivation to reach their goals
