STUDENTATHLETE EXPERIENCE ATHLETICEXCELLENCE

The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was devel-oped by the NCAA to prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field

Based on the premise that student-athletes, by virtue of their involvement in athletics, have a difficult time accessing campus-wide student activities, programming and experi-ences, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is designed to provide student-athletes with education and experiences to assist them in bridgingbridging the gap from college life to profes-sional life and to make meaningful contribu-tions to their communities.

The program was designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs, focusing on the person as a whole — academically, athletically and emotionally — and on the changing needs and skills of that person in the years during and after college.

TheThe program stresses five points of learning. The five areas of commitment viewed as critical to personal growth include: academic excellence, athletics excellence, personal development, service and career develop-ment. For instance, the academic commit-ment focuses on study skills, goal-setting, time management, while personal develop-ment may include fiscal responsibility, stress management and sports nutrition.

Some of the activities that are scheduled annually for the student-athletes include a welcome for all freshmen and transfers to kickoff the new year. The athletics depart-ment staff and other university staff attend and interact with the new student-athletes and welcome them to Lamar University.

Guest speakers will be brought in throughout the year to help the student-athletes cope with the rigors of balancing college life with academics and athletics.

CHAMPS/Life SkillsProgram

Lamar University is committed to an inter-collegiate athletic program that embodies academic, athletic and financial integrity. This constancy must be manifest primarily in an athletic program which is always in concert with the overall mission of the University and complements the values andand goals of higher education. As a part of the total educational process at Lamar, the intercollegiate athletic program should bring pride, admiration and loyalty to the University. In this context, the Lamar Uni-versity intercollegiate athletic program will benefit the student body, alumni, faculty, staff and local community through the development of esprit de corps. The soundness of the athletic program must also be evident in a commitment to enhance the educational growth and development of student-athletes and to abide by the letter and spirit of the rules andand regulations set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and The Southland Conference.

Lamar AthleticsMission Statement

The Lamar Student Athlete Advisory Commit-tee offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives. The SAAC is dedicated to promoting a positive student-athlete image within the athletic programs and creating the executive leaders of tomorrow.

The mission of the NCAA and Lamar Univer-sity's SAAC is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and foste-ring a positive student-athlete image

Robin HarmonyHead Coach

3rd Season

Robin Harmony enters her third season as women’s bas-ketball coach at Lamar after being named to the position on April 30, 2013.

Harmony has enjoyed plenty of success in her first two seasons at Lamar, winning a Southland Conference regu-lar-season championship and competing in the WNIT in her first campaign and following that with a second-place conference finish this past season.

Harmony coached a pair of All-Southland Conference players in each of her first season, as guard Gia Ayers was named to the first team and forward Dominique Edwards was a second-team selection in 2013-14, while JaMeisha Edwards was a first-team choice and Dominique Edwards was a third-team choice.

Harmony’s success prompted Lamar Director of Athlet-ics Jason Henderson to sign her to a contract extension this spring, ensuring that Harmony would stay at Lamar through the 2017-18 season.

Harmony came to Lamar from St. Thomas Universi-ty, where she spent six seasons as the school’s first-ever women’s basketball coach, posting an impressive 131-48 record. Harmony, a two-time Sun Conference Coach of the Year, led the Bobcats to three appearances in the NAIA National Championships.

The Bobcats never had a losing season under Harmo-ny, and went 27-4 with a perfect 14-0 Sun Conference re-cord in her last season before losing in the first round of the NAIA National Championships.

A defensive-minded coach, Harmony’s philosophy paid office at St. Thomas as the Bobcats twice ranked second in the nation in scoring defense and twice were in the top five for steals per game, 3-point field-goal percentage defense and turnover margin.

Prior to her time as head coach at St. Thomas, Har-mony spent 18 seasons on the coaching staff of her alma mater, the University of Miami, the last 12 seasons as as-sociate head coach. Harmony acted as interim coach for two games in her final season with the Hurricanes, post-ing victories in both contests.

During her time at Miami, Harmony helped the Hurri-canes win three Big East regular-season championships, two Big East Conference Tournament Championships, reaching the postseason seven times and advance to the Sweet 16 on one occasion.

Harmony, who was assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator for one season at Fairleigh Dickinson, was a standout player for the University of

Miami. The first women’s basketball player inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame, Harmony totaled 1,308 points, 750 rebounds, 445 assists and 314 steals in a school-record 125 games.

Harmony still holds the school record for assists in a game with 14 in a contest against Florida International University on Dec. 4, 1982. She is 10th in career points and fifth in career rebounds at Miami.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in education and recreation form Miami, Harmony played one season of professional basketball in England, helping her club, the Avon Cosmetics, win a league championship while earn-ing Most Valuable Player Honors.

Harmony, who earned a master’s degree in sports ad-ministration from St. Thomas, is a graduate of Hershey (Pa.) High School, where she was a three-year starter.

Randy Schneider is in his third season with the Lady Cardinals, and his second as associate head coach.

Schneider helped Lamar clinch a share of the South-land Conference regular-season title in 2013-14, as the Lady Cardinals went 13-5. Lamar finished 18-13 overall and qualified for the WNIT, the program’s fourth appear-ance in a national postseason tournament in the past five seasons.

In 2014-15, he helped the Lady Cardinals post their eight consecutive winning record, as Lamar finished 17-13 while placing second in the Southland Conference with a 14-4 mark.

An indefatigable recruiter, Schneider was instrumental in helping Lamar land a recruiting class that was ranked 84th in the nation and tops in the Southland Conference by All Star Girls Report, one of the top sources of high school player rankings in the nation.

Schneider was an assistant coach at St. Thomas Univer-sity in Florida for six seasons on the staff of current Lamar head coach Robin Harmony. During his time at St. Thom-as, the Bobcats six consecutive seasons of at least 20 wins, advanced to the NAIA Tournament on three occasions and were ranked as high as 11th in the nation. In his last sea-son at St. Thomas, the Bobcats posted the best record in program history, going 27-4, including a perfect 14-0 mark in the Sun Conference.

Prior to his time at St. Thomas, Schneider coached girls high-school basketball for eight seasons, post-ing a 131-57 record, reaching the state tournament seven times.

Schneider also served as a head coach of the Premier Jaguars AAU basketball team in Miami and the Mi-ami Suns, one of the premier AAU clubs in the nation.

Candace WalkerAssistant Coach

3rd Season

Candace Walker is in her third season as assistant coach of the Lady Cardinals after being hired in June 2013.

Walker, was an assistant coach at St. Thomas University in Miami, Fla., for two seasons, rejoins Lamar head coach Robin Harmony, who was the head coach at St. Thomas.

A tireless worker, Walker helped Lamar win a Southland Conference regular-season championship and a berth in the WNIT in 2013-14, and place second in the conference with a 14-4 conference record in 2014-15.

Walker played basketball for four seasons at UNC Wilming-ton, finishing her career second on the school’s all-time list for games played at 119 and third in steals with 185.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in business admin-istration from UNC Wilmington in 2010, Walker earned her

master’s degree in sports administration from St. Thomas while serving as assistant women’s basketball coach.

In her second season at St. Thomas, Walker helped the Bobcats post a 27-4 record, including a perfect 14-0 record in the Sun Conference, as St. Thomas was ranked as high as 11th in the nation in the NAIA.

As a student, Walker was actively involved with the UNC Wilmington Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Adopt-A-Family and the Relay for Life. At Lamar, she is in-volved in a number of community service activities with the Lady Cardinals.

Walker was a standout player at North Atlanta High School in Georgia, earning second-team All-State honors.

She resides in Beaumont.

Joya WhittingtonAssistant Coach

1st Season

Joya Whittington is the newest member of the Lady Car-dinals’ staff, coming to Lamar from Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., where she spent the past two seasons as head coach of the Falcons.

Whittington posted a 41-16 record in her two seasons at Lackawanna, including a 23-6 mark in 2014-15. Whittington coached four all-district players during her tenure with the Falcons. Prior to her time at Lackawanna, Whittington served two seasons as assistant coach at her alma mater, Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa., after four seasons as a standout player there.

At Seton Hill, Whittington was mentored by Ferne Laba-ti, the former National Coach of the Year, who was the head coach at Miami when current Lamar coach Robin Harmony served as an assistant.

As a four-year player at Seton Hill, Whittington scored 548

points, grabbed 470 rebounds, and added 155 assists and 112 steals. A two-year captain, Whittington helped the Griffins make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Na-tional Tournament as a junior.

In addition, Whittington has traveled overseas as a coach with New Release Basketball, a Christian organization that conducts camps and organizes teams to play games in Europe.

Whittington majored in business with a minor in psychol-ogy and a specialization in sports management, earning her bachelor’s degree from Seton Hill in 2011. She earned a mas-ter’s degree in business administration with a specialization in entrepreneurial studies from Seton Hill in 2013.
