GerryQuinlanisinhis17thseasonasheadwomen’srowingcoachatSaintJoseph’sUniversityandhasdevelopedtheHawks intooneof theEast’smostcompetitiveprograms. Includinghis tenureatSaint Joseph’s,Quinlanhasamassedmorethantwodecadesofcollegiateheadcoachingexperience.

For the past three seasons, the Hawks have continued to post solid results and at the 2014 Atlantic 10Championships,earnedabronzemedalintheVarsity8aswellastheThirdVarsity8.

Saint Joseph’smedaled in threeeventsat the2012Atlantic10Championships,andat theAberdeenDadVailRegatta,thedefendingchampionSecondVarsity8earnedabronzemedalforitsthirdconsecutivemedalinthepres-tigiousevent.Atthe2012DadVails,QuinlanwaspresentedwiththeMatthewLedwithCoach’sAward,whichisgiventotheoutstandingcoachfromthepreviousyear’sregatta.

Quinlan’s2011crewhadoneofthebestseasonsinschoolhistory,highlightedbytwofirstsfortheprogram-agoldmedalattheAberdeenDadVailRegattaandtheteamtitleintheAtlantic10Championships.TheHawks’SecondVarsity8capturedtheprogram’sfirstDadVailgoldmedalandtheVarsity4tookhomeasilver,tohelpSJU finishsec-ondintheteamstandings.SaintJoseph’swontheFreshman8attheconferencemeet,andearnedtop-threefinish-

esinthreeothereventstogivetheHawkstheleague’steamcrownforthefirsttimeever. In2010,theHawksmain-tainedtheirstatusasoneofthetopteamsintheAtlantic10Conference,turnedinmedal-winningperformances(onesilver,twobronze)attheAberdeenDadVailRegatta,andendedtheyearwithatriptotheprestigiousHenley RoyalRegattaforthesecondtimeinschoolhistory.SJU’sVarsity8alsosetarecordinbecomingtheonlyteamtoadvancetotheGrandFinalattheDadVailRegattaforsixconsecutiveyears.

The2009Hawksearnedanumberoffirstsfortheprogram.SaintJoseph’swonitsfirst-everAtlantic10titlesastheVarsity8andQuadboatsearnedthegoldmedalsattheconferencechampionships.QuinlanwasrecognizedastheAtlantic10CoachoftheYearforthefirsttimeinhiscareer,whiletheHawksmatchedtheirbest-everteamresultwithathird-placefinish.TheHawksearnedabronzemedal,whichgavethemthemostmedalsofanyteaminthepreviousfouryears.SJU’sFreshman8alsoadvancedtotheGrandFinalfortheseventhconsecutiveseason.

In2008,Quinlan’schargesplacedathenbest-everthirdasateamattheAtlantic10Championship.TheVarsity8boatearneditsfirst-evermedalatA-10s,placingsecond,whilealsotakingfirstattheJesuitInvitationalandtheKelly

Cup.TherestoftheHawksalsodominatedatthecity-wideKelly Cupraces,takingfirstplaceineverycontest.QuinlanguidedtheHawkstovictoryintheVarsity8atthe2006DadVailRegattawhilethatcrewearnedtheschool’sfirst-evertriptotheHenley Royal

RegattainEngland.TheHawksrowedtoasilver-medalfinishintheDadVailVarsity8in2007whiletheFreshman8tooksilverin2008.Duringhis tenure theHawkshavewon threegoldmedals, six silvers,and fivebronzemedalsat theDadVailRegatta.SJUhas finishedsecond in the

women’spointtrophystandingstwiceandcombinedwiththeHawks’men’steamtowintheDadVailOverallPointsTrophyin2005,2006and2010.SincehisarrivalatSJUin1999,Quinlanhasbeenoneofthedrivingforcesbehindthegrowthofboththewomen’sandmen’srowingprograms,nearly

doublingparticipationduringhistenure.QuinlanhasbeenactiveinthedevelopmentoftheRobertM.Gillin,Jr.Boathouse,whichopenedin2002,whilemain-tainingalumnisupportandcoordinatingseverallocalregattas,includingtheJesuitInvitationalRegatta.

Quinlan’srésuméincludesasix-yearstintastheheadcoachofNorthwesternUniversity’smen’sandwomen’sprogramsandathree-yearstretchastheheadwomen’scoachattheUniversityofNotreDame.HisteamshavewonmedalsattheDadVailRegatta,theChampionInternationalCollegiateRegattaandtheHeadoftheCharles,andhavecompetedintheHenleyRoyalRegattaandtheMexicoCityInternationalChampionships.

A1991graduateofNotreDame,QuinlanspenthisprepcareerrowingatMonsignorBonnerHighSchoolinDrexelHill,Pa.HeandhiswifeLinda,aformerHawks’assistantcoach,resideinPhiladelphiawiththeirdaughters,MaeveandTess.

FormerSaintJoseph’sstandoutBrianna(Kearns)Lampman,a2006graduate,isinhersixthseasonasassistantcoachandrecruitingcoordinatorwiththeHawks.

LampmanstrokedtheVarsity8forthreeyears,includingtheboatthatwonthegoldmedalatthe2006DadVailRegattaandmadetheHawks'first-evertriptotheHenleyRoyalRegatta.In2003,sherowedfortheFreshman8thatearnedsilvermedalsatboththeAtlantic10ChampionshipsandtheDadVailRegatta.

ShepreviouslyservedasagraduateassistantcoachatBarryUniversityinMiamiShores,Fla.,from2008to2010.Shehelpedleadtheteamtoa2010SunshineStateConferenceChampionshipTitleandanappear-anceattheNCAADivisionIIChampionship,wheretheVarsity8earnedthirdplace.

Lampmanearnedamaster'sdegreefromBarryUniversityinmovementscience,withaconcentrationinsportandexercisepsychology,andlaterpublishedherthesison"ThePrevalenceofEatingDisordersamongDivision1Rowers".ShespenttwoyearsonthecoachingstaffatPhiladelphiaUniversitypriortograduateschool,startingwithitsinauguralseasonin2006.The

Women'sNovice8claimedtheSarahVaughnTrophyinitsfirst-everDadVailRegattaappearance(2007).ThefollowingyeartheVarsity8earnedanat-largebidtotheNCAADivisionIIChampionship,wheretheyearnedafourth-placefinishintheGrandFinal.

homeoftheSaintJoseph’sUniversitymen’sandwomen’srowingteams.The15,540squarefootstate-of-the-artboathouseincludesfourheated

boatbayswithcapacityfor42eights,14fours/quads,and14smallboats.The boathouse sits on 20,381 square feet of land at the 1,000-meter

markofthefamedSchuylkillRiverracecourse.TheboathouseservesasSJU’shomebaseforallofitshomeregattas,includingtheDadVailRegatta,MurphyCup,andvariousdualraces. The750-squarefootdeck isaperfectviewingareaforfamilies,fans,andalumni.

Thesecondflooroftheboathouseincludeslockerrooms,showers,etcaswellasalargecommonareaforergs,teammeetings,andvideoreview.

TheGillinBoatClubjoinedtheSchuylkillNavyonSeptember20,2004,byunanimousvoteofthedelegatesoftheSchuylkillNavy's10memberclubs.

InadditiontoservingasthehomeofHawkrowing,theGillinBoathousealso hosts several summer camps including the Saint Joseph’sUniversity/FairmountParkCommission'sCommunityRowingProgram.

TheSaintJoseph’srowingprogramshaveaproudhistoryofsuccessonthewater,butanumberofalumshaveachievedagreatamountofpost-grad-uatesuccessinthesportaswell.MikeTeti’78,Teresa ZarzecznyBell’88 andReneeHykel’01 arethreeSJUlegendsthathavegoneontoevengreatersuc-cessessincetheirdaysonHawkHill.Allthreehavetakentheirrowingcareerstothehighestlevelsofinternationalcompetition,makingtheSJUrowingpro-gramacradleofchampions.

Arguablythebest-knownoarsmaninAmerica,MikeTetiwasatopHawkrower,graduatingfromSJUwithasociologydegreein1978.

“SaintJoseph’sgavemetheopportunitytocompeteandalsotheoppor-tunityforagreateducation,”Tetisays.“IoweSJUagreatdebtforalloftheopportunitiesIreceived.”

From1977-93,Tetirowedon11nationalteams,includingthreetripstotheOlympicGames.Hewon24nationalchampionships,agoldmedalinthemen’s eight at the 1987World Championships and a bronzemedal in thesameevent at the1988Olympics. Hewasnamed the1987United StatesRowingMaleAthleteoftheYear.

Tetiachievedevengreaternotorietyasacoach,guidingtheU.S.men’sopeneightsquadtoanunprecedentedthreestraightworldchampionships.Healsocoachedthemen’sfourwithcoxswaintoworldchampionshipgold.In1996heledthelightweightmen’sfourtoanOlympicbronzemedalbeforebeing named USRowing’s HeadMen’s Sweep Coach, the highest coachinghonorinthecountry,inOctoberofthatyear.

TetibecametheU.S.Olympiccoachfollowingthe2000Games,andledthemen’seightboattogoldinAthensin2004,afeatthattheUnitedStateshad not achieved since 1964 when another coach with Hawk ties, AlRosenberg,ledtheAmericanstovictory.HealsoguidedtheU.S.Mentothebronzemedalatthe2008OlympicsinBeijing.

Tetiiscurrentlytheheadcoachofthemen’screwteamattheUniversityofCaliforniaandwasinductedintotheNationalRowingFederation’sHallofFamein2010.

TeresaBell isnostranger tosuccesson the international level,either.HerOlympicdreambeganinthefallof1992whentheInternationalOlympicCommitteeannouncedthatherevent, the lightweightdoublesculls,wouldbeapartoftheOlympicGamesin1996.

Intruth,Bell’sjourneyreallybeganbackin1985.Inthatyearthesoph-omorejoinedtheSaintJoseph’swomen’srowingclubteam.By1988,shewasapart-timememberofthevarsitysquad,andherHawkHillcareerculminat-edinvictoryinthewomen’ssingleseventattheprestigiousDadVailRegatta.Bell laterwentontobeamemberofboththeCrescentBoatClubandtheFairmountRowingClub,forwhomshestillrowswhensheisinPhiladelphia.

In1996,BellwaspreparingforOlympiccompetitionwithintensework-outsthreetimesaday.SheputinmostofherworkinTennessee,thehome

of the United States Women’s RowingCenter. She also spent time training inGeorgia in preparation for the OlympicTrials. Before the Olympic Games, shespent a month rowing in Europe beforereturninghomefortheAtlantagames.

This exhausting routine helped pre-pareBellfortherigorsofthehighestlevelof internationalcompetition,butallofthework paid off in the end as Bell and herpartner, Lindsay Burns, took the silvermedalinthelightweightdoublesculls.

FromHawkHill totheOlympicmedalstand, Bell never forgot her roots. “Ienjoyedmy experience at Saint Joseph’s,”Bell says. “It made me who I am today.Besidesrowing,SaintJoseph’staughtmetobeopen-mindedandthathasreallyhelpedme.”

FollowingtheOlympics,Bellplacedfifthinthesameeventatthe1997WorldChampionships.Shewasinducted,alongwithTeti,asamemberoftheinaugural class on the Saint Joseph’s AthleticsHall of Fame in 1999.Morerecently,BellwasinductedintotheNationalRowingFoundationHallofFamein2016.

SJU’sinfluenceisstillbeingfeltintherowingcommunityasClassof oneofthetopnamesinthesport.Sheisafive-timememberoftheU.S.NationalTeamandcompetedat theWorldChampionshipseveryyear from2003to2006. In 2005, the former Saint Joseph’swalk-on took silver in the light-weight double sculls at theWorld Championships inGifu, Japan. In 2007,HykelwastheU.S.NationalChampioninthelightweightsinglesculls.

The year 2008markedHykel’s first trip to theOlympicGames as shetraveled to Beijing to compete in the lightweight double sculls event, thesameeventTeresaBelltooksilverinatthe1996Games.Hykelandherpart-ner,formerSJUassistantrowingcoachJenGoldsack,justmissedthemedalfinalafterreachingtheA/Bsemifinal.

Teti,BellandHykelarejustthreeofmorethanadozenHawkstocom-peteinternationally,asathletessuchasSeanDreaandtheFlaniganbrothers,DonaldandRichard,havedoneSaintJoseph’sproudatthehighestlevelsofthesport.

Inadditiontotheseindividuals,theSaintJoseph’srowingprogramcon-tinues towritenewchapters in itsever-expanding legacy. Since1999, theHawkmen’sandwomen’steamshavecombinedtofinishfirstorsecondinthe race for the coveted Jack Bratton Trophy, awarded to the Dad VailRegatta’soverallpointschampion,fourtimes,mostrecentlyin2010.

The women’s program, meanwhile, has developed into one of theregion’smostformidable.

The2006seasonwasabanneronefortheHawkprogramasawhole,asSJU turned in its then-best-ever finishesat theSanDiegoCrewClassicandAtlantic10Championships,andwinninggoldintheVarsity8attheDadVailRegatta. The 2006 team also competed in the prestigious Henley RoyalRegattaintheUnitedKingdom,afirstforSaintJoseph’s.

In2009,theHawks’Varsity8setarecordinbecomingtheonlyteamtoadvancetotheGrandFinaloftheDadVailRegattaforfiveconsecutiveyearsand increased that mark to six straight in 2010. SJU’s Freshman 8 alsoadvancedtotheGrandFinalforeightyearsinarow.The2010seasonculmi-natedwithSaintJoseph’scompetingatHenleyforthesecondtimeinschoolhistory,whilein2011,theHawkswontheirfirstAtlantic10Conferenceteamchampionship.

TheHawkshavemadetwotripstotheHenleyRoyalRegatta,withthemostrecentbeingin2010.

TheSaintJoseph’sHawkmascothasbeenflappingitswingsfor60years.Oneof themost famousmascots incollegesports, theHawk isbestknown for staying inconstant

motionbyflappingitswingsthroughouteverybasketballgameandrepresentingtheSaintJoseph’smotto,“TheHawkWillNeverDie”.

SaintJoseph’sathleticteamshavebeenrecognizedwiththenickname“Hawks”since1929. Atthattime,theschool’syearbookeditorinitiatedacontestamongthestudentbodyforasymbol.Morethan100submissionswerenarrowed,with“Hawks”winningoutover“Grenadiers”byaslimmargin.Thenamewasappropriatebecauseittypified“thefightingspiritofourcrimsonandgrayathletesanditissuggestiveoftheaerialattackwhichhasmadeourfootballteamfamous.”Football,ironically,wasdiscontinuedatSJUfollowingthe1939season.

TheHawkmascothasgarnerednumerousaccoladesinits60-yearhistory,andin2013,itwasnamed“CollegeBasketball’sBestTradition”byNCAA.com..Ithasbeenselectedasthenation’stopmascotbyTheSportingNews,SportsIllustrated,SportsIllustratedforKids,Street&Smith’sBasketballYearbook andESPNCollegeBasketball magazineandwasanomineeforthe2008MascotHallofFame.

Caitlin Walley ’15, a food marketingmajor, earned a business degreewhile alsokeeping her love of theater close to herheart. When shewasn’t busymesmerizingaudiences with her leading roles, she wasbuilding a better SJU by founding the IotaRhochapterofPhiSigmaSigmasorority.Atthesametime,shesinglehandedlylaunchedher career by attending large-scaletradeshows with food industry leaders inChicago, Ill., and interningatMerck, oneofthelargestpharmaceuticalcompaniesintheworld.CaitlinchosetomakehertimematteratSJU.

Brian Lafferty ’15, a criminal justicemajor,changedhisown lifeandthe livesoffellowHawks.HemadeanimpactontheSJUcommunityas vicepresidentof the studentgovernment and a resident assistant, allwhile excelling in academics and achievingmembership in three honor societies. HispassionforhelpingothersandhisSJUprideflourishedasaHawkHosttourguideandanorientation leader.And,asa leaderofSJU’soff-campusministryprograms,hediscoveredhowtohelpotherslivegreater,whileatthesame time exciting audiences at every bas-ketballgameastheHawkmascot.
