INTRODUCTION

1

Vision and goals

In October 18th 2012, the IPN SPIE Student Chapter was established, after two years the name was

changed to IPN – Azcapotzalco SPIE Student Chapter in order to allow other IPN branches to form

their own chapters.

Most of our members are PhD and Master Students from the Centro de Investigación e Innovación

Tecnológica (CIITEC – Azcapotzalco) in Mexico City. The other members are postgraduates and

undergraduates from Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Mécanica y Eléctrica (ESIME – Azcapotzalco

and ESIME - Zacatenco), and Universidad Autónoma del Carmen (UNACAR).

Our objective is to keep together the student community from IPN – Azcapotzalco and UNACAR

who are interested in image processing, optics and photonics research fields. Our activities are

categorised into two groups:

Social and networking activities.

Educational activities.

Student Chapter members

Committee members are elected at the beginning of this year. The current committee members

(January 2015 –December 2015) are:

Over the last year, the student chapter has been organizing few events that involve our members,

students from other universities and researchers from others places inside or outside Mexico.

Social and Networking Activities

List of social and networking activities:

Announced of planned activities (January 2015)

Party Recruitment (January 2015)

Welcome party for members who were studying abroad in 2015.

Members´ Birthdays (Once a month).

Tea Time (Twice a month).

January 2015: Announced of planned activities.

This event was planned to provide information, to all members of our chapter, regarding the

activities, conferences and grants. The main topics were Optics and Photonics and International

Year of Light (IYL) 2015.

internal meeting.

January 2015: Party Recruitment.

The aim of this event was to talk about our chapter, activities, benefits to be members, and how to

join us. Then we invited the prospective students to share with us their expectations and research

works. At the end, everyone enjoyed snacks and beverages.

July 2015: Knowing the company Test Technology.

This event was organized by the supervisor of the IPN – Azcapotzalco Student Chapter in order to

create a contact with the company Test Technology. Test Technology is specialized to provide test

and measurements devices to the industry or universities. The company provided a short talk to

explain some optical devices which can be useful to develop the different projects in the Student

Chapter.

Twice a month (2015): Tea Time.

Tea time is a social event organized by the student chapter where chapter members and students

from other fields are invited to give a short talk regarding their scientific working and then to

enjoy some snacks and beverages. This is a great opportunity to interact with other departments

in order to create future collaborations, and it is also a great opportunity to invite those students

to join our chapter.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

IPN, Azcapotzalco Student Chapter was invited to give a scientific talks in

different places

Our Vice-President was invited to give a scientific talk regarding his research group by

“Technological Institute of Celaya”.

On October 22, a scientific talk was given at the Technological Institute of Celaya (Instituto

Tecnológico de Celaya), Mexico, by reason of the International Congress of Mechatronics Systems

(CISMe 2015) and The National Week of Science and Technology.

At the conference there was talk of the various research topics of the SPIE chapter members,

emphasizing the work done by the research group working with tapered fiber, encouraging the

interplay of both study areas, tapered optical fibers and mechatronics, noting the great

intervention of mechatronics in the field of tapers.
