Welcome to the Klein Forest Choir! You have chosen membership in an award winning organization, dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in choral
music. We believe that discipline and hard work paired with energy and fun are what make this organization
great! You are asked to take your commitment seriously and to come to class daily with a desire to work and
a willingness to learn.
We are excited to get the year started with a fantastic group of students. Our choir department has so much
to offer all who are a part of it. Music is a vital part of everyone’s life, and there is much evidence to support
that participating in music stimulates the brain and increases a person’s intelligence.
Our choir department offers the following benefits to its members:
Performances of a Lifetime
Lifelong Friendships
A Place to “Belong”
Competitions
Annual Trips
In this handbook you will find information and guidelines to help you have a successful year. It is designed to
inform students and their parents/guardians of KISD/KFHS policies for choir and address questions and concerns
that may arise throughout the school year. Please read these pages carefully and allow us to address any
questions that you might have. Answers to most questions concerning procedures in our department can be
found within this book and/or on our choir website at www.kleinforestchoir.com.
We also encourage you to use our online management system, CHARMS, which monitors individual student fees,
forms and other information. A link can be found on our website. Sign on using school code KleinForestChoir
and use your student’s KISD ID# to view personal information.
The Klein Forest Choir Department has established a strong tradition of excellence on our campus and in our
community. We welcome you as part of our choir family and look forward to your involvement with the choir.
Please do not hesitate to contact us as questions or concerns arise throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Anna C. Schermerhorn Kandi Poole

KLEIN FOREST CHOIRS
PERFORMING CHOIRS
We have a place and a choir for every interested singer. Students are expected to remain in choir from August through June.
Though some consideration is given to those students who have shown a long history of commitment to the program, ensemble
placement is not solely connected to grade level. Your skill and ability as a singer will be the deciding factor for choir
placement. Some movement within ensembles is possible at semester, but only with director approval. Our current choirs
and descriptions are as follows:
Men’s Choir: Open to men in grades 9-12. This choir focuses on learning foundational vocal technique, sight
reading, and essential knowledge of music. Students are required to participate in school concerts and specially
requested programs. This ensemble will include roughly 20-30 men. Members of this choir will participate
with Chorale Men to form The Men of Klein Forest.
Women’s Choir: Open to women in grades 9-12. This choir focuses on learning foundational vocal technique,
sight reading, and essential knowledge of music. Students are required to participate in school concerts and
specially requested programs. Some students may remain in this group for one semester and then move to
Bella Voce if they are prepared. Will include roughly 40-50 women.
Bella Voce: Open to women in grades 10-12, most of whom have had previous choral experience at the high
school level. This will be the select women’s ensemble of Klein Forest High School and in many ways will function as a Varsity Women’s ensemble. Singers must have advanced literacy skills, mature and developed
tone, and a record of consistent eligibility. Women of Bella Voce must either audition for All-State or perform
a solo at KISD Solo & Ensemble contest. Will include roughly 30-40 women.
Chorale Men/Women: Open to all students in grades 10-12, most of whom have had previous choral
experience at the high school level. This is an advanced mixed ensemble of highly motivated singers. It
requires strong knowledge of music including ability to read music and fundamental vocal technique. Singers
must have advanced literacy skills, mature and developed tone, and a record of consistent eligibility. All
members of the ensemble must commit to Tuesday evening rehearsals from 6-8PM. Students who cannot
commit to this weekly rehearsal will not be considered for this ensemble. Members must audition for All-
State and perform a solo at KISD Solo & Ensemble contest. Will include roughly 30-40 singers. Chorale men
also participate in The Men of Klein Forest.
KF Singers: Open to all returning choral students in grades 10-12. Must be a second choral ensemble.
Students in this ensemble must be concurrently enrolled in one of the choirs above and KF Singers. Students
in this ensemble must purchase their own uniform and extra accessories. Auditions for this ensemble are held
in May. Will roughly include 15-20 singers.
*All KF Choirs participate in the Fall Concert, Dinner Theater, Spring Concert and Pop Show.
*The Men of Klein Forest participate in the KISD Men’s Concert.
*Men and Women’s Choir may participate in UIL Concert and Sight-reading at the discretion of the directors.
*Bella Voce and Chorale must participate in UIL Concert and Sight-reading.
*All dates of KF Choir performances are available on the Choir Master Calendar.

CHOIR STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
Klein Forest Choir students are asked to hold themselves to a high personal standard both in and out of the choir classroom. Student placement in each choir is based on ability but much consideration is given to the student’s
overall success in the choir department and Klein Forest. The following criteria are used to determine a student’s
placement or advancement within the department.
1. Maintain Academic Eligibility
2. Maintain an Exemplary Discipline Record
3. Attend ALL Rehearsals and Performances
4. Work Daily to Improve Musicianship Skills Failure to meet these expectations could result in change of class schedule at semester, lower academic grade for
#3 and #4, loss of travel privileges with the choir and any other consequences deemed necessary by the choir
directors.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
1. Be in your seat before the bell rings. Gather your folder and pencil and be in your seat when the bell rings.
If a student is not in their seat when the bell rings, then he/she is tardy. Students entering class after the bell
with proper documentation of official school business in the building will not be marked tardy.
2. Have only your choir materials at your seat. Place all personal belongings in designated areas at the side of
the room during class time. Purses, books, pencil bags, brushes, combs, etc. are not allowed at your seat.
3. Have no gum, candy, paper, etc. in your mouth while in the choir room.
4. No food or drinks are allowed in the choir room or practice areas. Water bottles are permitted during all
rehearsals.
5. Talk only when you have permission. Be respectful of your director and fellow choir members. Be ready to
focus on our main priority of making music. This requires absolute attention.
GRADING POLICY
1. 60% Participation/Concerts: Students receive a weekly Participation Grade. Grades reflect student
attendance, attentiveness, preparedness, punctuality, attitude and behavior for daily rehearsals. Grades are also
given for extra rehearsals and activities. Concerts also fall in this category. All Concerts are graded.
Attendance at concerts is MANDATORY. Refer to CONCERT REQUIREMENTS page of the handbook.
2. 30% Choir Tests: Any testing format chosen by the Director. Advance notice will be given of a test and will be given on assigned subject testing days. Major projects such as the District Audition Unit and the
Solo Presentation Unit fall in this grading category. Grading rubrics will be sent home for notification
of any major projects.
3. 10% Homework: This includes materials check, pencil check, letters to be signed by parents and returned to
the Director, permission slips, etc. Students will be informed when something is for a grade.
6
LATE WORK POLICY
Daily Grades: Major Grades:
1 day late: – 20% 1 day late: – 30%
2 days late: – 30% 2 days late-Zero for grade
3 days late-Zero for grade
DISCIPLINE POLICY
1. Verbal Warning
2. Rehearsal Time Out/Teaching Interaction: Student will be pulled aside and/or removed from
class. Teacher and student will then privately discuss behavior and consequences to follow should
behavior not improve.
3. Phone call to Parent/Guardian: Teacher will call parent in order to discuss specific behaviors and
how these behaviors can be improved with reinforcement at home. Together the teacher and parent
will decide on the best course of action.
4. Office Referral: Once all other venues have been exhausted, then we must reach out to the
administration for school consequences such as detentions, ISS, OSS, or Alternative Campus.
Any physical/verbal violence, major infraction of KFHS or KISD policy, or student refusal
to cooperate in discipline procedures or follow the discipline policy will result in an
immediate Office Referral.
Steps 2 – 4 above include points deducted from daily and conduct grades. Step 4 will result in a “U” or
Unsatisfactory in conduct for the six weeks.
CODE OF CONDUCT
All persons associated with the Klein Forest Choir department should be made aware that we are
to represent our school and department to the best of our abilities. We ask that all involved adhere
to the following code of conduct:
1. Represent Klein Forest in a positive, mature manner and you will further develop pride in your choral
department. You are your biggest advocate for choral music by your attitude about music, your directors, and
your performances. Your attitudes are a direct reflection of your directors and the program.
2. Any student participating in an unfavorable, questionable or illegal manner through electronic media (i.e.
websites, personal homepages, blogs, Tweets, text messages, chat rooms or similar websites/files accessible through
a server or internet) or using electronic communication devices in such a way as to bring discredit on their
organization, its members or any student including themselves will be subject to the disciplinary actions determined
by appropriate school officials and/or organization/directors, including probation or dismissal from the organization.
7
REHEARSAL AND CONCERT EXPECTATIONS
Major rehearsal and concert dates are already listed on the KF Choir Master Calendar. Please be responsible by
keeping all dates on the Master Calendar open and clear of any other events, appointments, work, etc. After
school rehearsals and concert are an extension of the school day and are co-curricular. Students earn
a Daily/Homework grade for attendance and participation at required rehearsal. Student earn Participation/Concert
grades for concerts. Students are expected to arrive on time with their music, a pencil and a good attitude to all
rehearsal/concerts.
Excused Absences: A student will not be penalized for an absence due to severe personal illness or catastrophic
family emergencies. Written documentation must be provided in the event of an emergency. Students are also
not penalized for other co-curricular subjects that require their attendance at afterschool practices or rehearsals.
We must work out a compromise with other organizations, so students can participate in all the activities they
want. We can help with communication to other sponsors in the event that there are conflicts. Please do not
hesitate to speak to us.
Unexcused Absences: Babysitting, work (unless it is part of a Co-Op class), too much homework, doctor’s or
dentist appointments, club meetings, step practice, etc. are considered unexcused absences from required
rehearsals. A grade of a ZERO (0) will be placed in the grade book if an absence is unexcused.
Choir Gold Form: Students must submit a Klein Forest Choir “Gold Form” in the event of a rehearsal/concert
conflict. This form must be submitted as soon as a conflict is known and at least one week in advance. Every
attempt must be made to resolve the conflict prior to turning in the form. Turning in a “Gold Form” does not
guarantee an excused absence. The above guidelines will be used to determine whether the absence is excused or
unexcused. A sample of the form is below. Actual forms can be found in the choir room.

CONCERT REQUIREMENTS
REFER TO REHEARSAL AND CONCERT EXPECTATIONS FOR ATTENDANCE REQUIRMENTS
According to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), music students in grades 9th, 10th, 11th, and
12th are required to “demonstrate appropriate small and large ensemble performance techniques during
formal and informal concerts.” Choir concerts and performances are equivalent to other classes’ six weeks and
semester tests. Concerts are the culmination of an extended period of learning; therefore, Concerts on the
Master Calendar are MANDATORY. Concert grades are EARNED using the following criteria:
STUDENTS: POINTS EARNED:
1. Arrive on time 5 POINTS
2. Have Appropriate Uniform and Appearance 5 POINTS
3. Sing with Choir 50 POINTS
4. Stay for the duration of the concert 10 POINTS
5. Display Appropriate Concert Etiquette 30 POINTS
When a student misses a concert, there is nothing a student can do to sufficiently replace the concert
experience, nor would a written assignment adequately substitute for the student’s lack of participation. In fairness
to the other students who fulfilled their obligation, an excused or unexcused concert absence will require a
make up assignment. It is the responsibility of the student to secure the assignment from the director. All
assignments should be completed within two class meetings of the missed concert unless an alternate deadline is
given by the director. The makeup assignment will be recorded as a test grade. Unexcused absences can
only earn a maximum of a 70.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
Since extra-curricular events are very valuable musical experiences and since choir students are eager to participate,
students must keep up their grades. It is also important to the choir department that students keep these high
standards, so we will be monitoring their academic eligibility on a regular basis.
In order to participate in any extra-curricular activity or event (this does not include concerts and rehearsals which
are co-curricular), the student must be academically eligible. The State of Texas requires those students wishing
to participate in extra-curricular activities (District auditions, athletics, cheerleading, drill team, etc.) to maintain a
70 or above in each class the six weeks prior to the event in which the student wishes to participate. Students can
lose or gain their eligibility at the end of every six weeks. Eligibility can be regained if the student is passing all
classes on his/her Progress Report. You cannot lose your eligibility on a Progress Report.
Progress Reports are official school documents. Please do your best during the first three weeks of a grading
period to have good grades. It is much easier to maintain a good average than have to bring up your grade at the
end of the six weeks.
It is the responsibility of the student to provide proof of eligibility. We will do our best to verify
eligibility, but burden of proof lies with the student. Let us know immediately when eligibility is in
question.
9
STUDENT TRAVEL
The Choir Department will occasionally engage in overnight travel for festivals and performances. Details concerning upcoming trips will be discussed early in each school year. Although choir trips are optional, students
are strongly encouraged to participate as we will be performing on all trips and need our entire team in order to
be successful. Specific regulations concerning student travel will be discussed in detail preceding all trips. These
specific guidelines should be kept in mind:
When traveling with the Choral Department, you are serving as a representative to the public of our choir,
school and district. Students will be expected to behave in a way that brings honor to our choir, school
and district.
A trip contract will be required to be signed by all persons requesting to travel with the KFHS Choir.
Payment schedules will be finalized early in the year. Payment deadlines are final and must be adhered to
so deadlines to travel agencies, bus companies, etc. can be met by the department. In almost all cases, trip
payments are non-refundable as this money goes directly to tour companies, hotels, buses, etc. Students
will be given fundraising opportunities to significantly reduce or eliminate parents’ out of pocket costs.
Consistent discipline problems in school (including multiple assignments to in school suspension) may result in the loss of trip privileges. Any flagrant offense of school policy or KISD Code of Conduct will result in
the loss of travel privileges for a period to be determined by the director and school administration.
You must be academically eligible for the six weeks in which the trips occur. No refunds are given
due to loss of eligibility.
INIVIDUALIZED MUSIC INSTRUCTION-VOICE LESSONS
Private voice lessons are available to choir students who seek to improve their performance by enrolling for private
lessons conducted after normal school hours in our music facilities. Students are under no obligation to take
lessons. These lessons can contribute greatly to every student’s musical growth and to the success of the choir
program. We ask you to seriously consider taking advantage of this additional instructional opportunity.
Voice lessons are an additional expense to the choir student. Lessons are $20 for a half hour weekly lesson.
Lessons are scheduled at the convenience of both the private instructor and the student. Private voice teachers
undergo a rigorous background check through KISD and must have a degree in music. Additional information may
be obtained from the choir directors.
VOICE LESSON SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Klein Forest Choir is committed to ensuring that each choir student has an opportunity to enroll in private
lessons. Through generous donations made by parents and community supporters, students in the Klein Forest
Choir Program receive scholarships to help underwrite the cost of lessons. Funds are awarded to the student to
cover up to half of the cost of each lesson ($10). Scholarships are awarded on a first come, first served basis until
funds run out. Students who submit applications after the funds have been awarded will be placed on a waiting list.
If a student drops lessons or more funds are received, those on the waiting list will be contacted in the order in
which the applications are received.
10
LETTER JACKETS Students may only receive one school purchased award jacket during their high school career at the same school. Freshmen are excluded from receiving a letter jacket with the exception of those who earn 10 or more achievement/participation points. If a student earns a letter jacket and becomes eligible for an additional letter, a suitable recognition patch or stripe will be available for this student to indicate that he/she has achieved this recognition more than once. To receive a letter award in choir, a student must:
A. Be a member of a student organization that actively participates in interscholastic competition and remain in good standing for the entire school year.
B. Demonstrate a positive attitude and maintain a satisfactory citizenship/conduct and scholarship average.
C. Attend all rehearsals and performances. D. Fulfill one or more of the following lettering requirements in one school year:
If any part of the above qualifications has not been fulfilled, the student will be ineligible for an award. If the above qualifications have been fulfilled, then they must earn a minimum of eight achievement and/or participation points. Participation points for choir members will accumulate or carry over from year to year and may be earned as follows:
Second year in High School Choir 2 points Third year in High School Choir 3 points Fourth year in High School Choir 4 points Fourth year points are contingent upon the student remaining a member of the organization for his/her entire senior year under the conditions stated in A, B, & C above.
Achievement points do not accumulate or carry over from year to year. They may be earned as follows:
Attain membership in the All-Region Choir 4 points Advance to the Area Choir Audition 4 points Attain membership in the All-State Choir 2 points Receive an excellent rating on a class I or II 3 points
Solo at the KISD Solo & Ensemble Contest
Receive a first division rating on a class I or II 3 points Ensemble at the KISD Solo & Ensemble Contest
(only two solo and/or ensemble events may be counted toward lettering in a single year.)
A student who is ineligible for any extracurricular activities during the year will forfeit participation points for the year. At the Director’s discretion and with the approval of the school principal, seniors may receive an award jacket if the student is felt to be deserving, even though they may not have fulfilled the requirements set forth above. Measuring for jackets occurs once a semester. Students measured in the fall semester will receive their jackets in the spring. Those students measured in the spring semester will receive their jackets in the fall.
11
FUNDRAISING
We raise funds in choir to enrich our experiences and daily efforts. We receive limited funds from KISD to operate
the Choir Department. Money raised by the Choir Department remains in the choir activity account and does not
go into any other accounts belonging to the district or the school. Fundraising money is used to pay for sound
equipment, computer equipment/software, transportation to events not paid for by the district, etc. We ask that
you participate in fundraising for the benefit of the choir as a whole. We also ask you to fundraise to help
underwrite the cost of the Spring Trip. The KF Choir policy provides that 60% of the profit from fundraising
efforts is credited to your personal cost of the Spring Trip. 40% of the profit will remain in the choir activity
account.
