WHO  WE  ARE  -‐  The  ELO  represents  the  collecAve  voice  of  landowners,  managers  and  farmers  across  Europe.   Their   business   and   private   properAes   are   the   core   for   a   sustainable   and   prosperous  countryside.  The  ELO  addresses  issues  that  affect  European  rural  areas,  which  represent  over  77%  of  the   EU’s   territory   (47%   farm   land   and   30%   forest)   and   is   home   to   around   half   its   populaAon  (consisAng  of  farming  communiAes  and  other  residents).      WHAT  DO  WE  STAND  FOR  -‐  The  ELO  considers  that  policies  must  opAmise  acAons  to  maintain  food  security   while   fully   exploiAng   the  miAgaAon   potenAal   of   different   land   uses.   Taking   into   account  both   global   and   local   approaches,   climate   change   miAgaAon   and   adaptaAon   can   be   achieved   by  encouraging   the   provision   of   environmental   goods   and   services,   by   promoAng   the   Sustainable  IntensificaAon  of  food  producAon  and  a  Bioeconomy,  by  incenAvising  research  and  innovaAon.      WHY  MANAGING  CARBON  STOCKS?  -‐  Climate  change  has  strong  implicaAons  for  land  managers.  It  increases   their   challenges   in   terms   of   availability   of   water   resources,   quality   of   soils,   spread   and  pests’   diseases   and   consequently   growth   and   yields,   ecosystems   and   businesses,   leading   to  significant   changes   in   their   condiAons.     Therefore,   land   management   soluAons   are   to   be   found,  mainly  by   reducing  greenhouse  gas  emissions  and  conserving  and   increasing   carbon   stocks,  which  can  be  used  as  a  bioenergy  source  and  a  subsAtute  to  fossil  fuels.  Managing  ecosystem  services  can  also   minimize   climate   change   impacts.   Land   managers   will   have   to   adapt   their   businesses   and  infrastructures,  as  climate  change  will  have  an  adverse  effect  on  a  range  of  business  ventures.    à  See  ELO’s  publicaAon  «  Climate  change  and  the  Rural  Economy  »  (available  at  www.elo.org)

EUROPEAN BEE AWARDEnhancing the protection of pollinators in the farmed environment

ABOUT   -‐   The   European   Bee   Award   was   launched   for   the   first   Ame   in   2014   by   the   European  Landowners’  OrganizaAon  and  the  European  Agricultural  Machinery  AssociaAon  CEMA  with  the  aim  of  contribuAng  to  the  promoAon  of  common  soluAons  for  the  benefit  of  biodiversity.  The  European  Bee  Award  rewards  farmers,  landowners,  land  managers  or  rural  entrepreneurs  who  contribute  with  an  outstanding  and  innovaAve  project  to  the  protecAon  of  bees  and  other  pollinators  in  the  farmed  environment.   An   independent   jury   chaired   by   Professor   Godfray   (University   of   Oxford)   and  supported   by   internaAonal   experts,   members   of   the   European   InsAtuAons   and   NGOs   will   be   in  charge  of   assessing  which  pracAces  and   innovaAve   ideas   in  agriculture   can   contribute   to  preserve  the  health  of  pollinators  in  Europe  (e.g.  honey  bees,  bumble  bees,  flies,  bu*erflies).      WHO  CAN  PARTICIPATE?  -‐  The  European  Bee  Award   is  awarded  to  a  European  land  manager  who  possibly  together  with  a  partner  organisaAon  has  developed  and  implemented  a  novel  pracAce  that  helps  to  reduce  the   impact  of  farming  operaAons  on  honeybees  and  other  pollinators.  The  type  of  intervenAons   that   might   be   considered   include   managing   part   of   the   farm   in   ways   that   benefit  pollinators,   improving   the   availability   of   flowers   and   other   resources   that   pollinators   require,  changes  within  the  agronomic  pracAces  and  the  use  of  farm  equipment  that  are  pollinator  friendly.  The   independent   jury   takes   a   broad   view   of   possible   intervenAons   and   welcomes   novel   and  innovaAve   ideas.     It   considers   pracAces   that  measurably   improve  pollinator  wellbeing   on   all   farm  types   and   that   benefit   not   only   managed   honeybee   populaAons   but   also   wild   bees   and   other  pollinators.    HOW  TO  PARTICIPATE  -‐  Once  the  call  for  applicaAons  launched,  you  can  download  the  applicaAon  form  at  www.europeanlandowners.org  an  send  it  by  email  to  [email protected]

2015 European Biodiversity Conference Managing Europe’s Carbon stocks for climate resilient ecosystems

CONTEXT   -‐  Agriculture  and   forestry  fix  carbon   in   large  quanAAes  and  are   the  main  economic   sectors  that   store   it   in   vegetaAon   and   soils   through   photosynthesis.   Grassland,   humid   zones   and   forests   in  parAcular  are  key  elements.  A  wide  range  of  farming  and  forestry  pracAces  and  land  use  changes  help  enhance   carbon   sequestraAon   as   conservaAon   agriculture,   diversified   crop   rotaAons,   preservaAon  of  carbon  hotspots  areas  etc.    It  is  esAmated  that  in  the  EU  soils  contain  73-‐79  gigatons  of  organic  carbon  (equivalent  to  275  Gt  CO2).  This  represents  more  than  fify  Ames  the  annual  GHG  emissions  from  the  EU.        PURPOSE  OF  THE  CONFERENCE  -‐  Climate  change  is  a  very  serious  challenge  for  society  and  impacts  on  rural  areas  and  lands  based  sectors.  The  efforts  of  landowners  and  land  managers  for  securing  carbon  stored  in  forests  and  soils  have  only  partly  been  included  in  internaAonal  agreements  primarily  due  to  the  difficulty  of  collecAng  robust  carbon  data  from  forests  and  soils  and  the  lack  of  common  rules  on  how   to   account   for   emissions   and   removals.   There   is   an   unused   potenAal   for   cost-‐effecAve   climate  miAgaAon   acAviAes   in   EU   agriculture.   Policies   will   need   to   encourage   and   facilitate   the   necessary  changes  for  a  more  efficient  use  of  natural  resources  to  achieve  be*er  agricultural  and  environmental  outputs.
