Dear Visitors,Welcome to Knox County, Illinois and

Galesburg, the county seat. Our communi-ty has long been a regional leader in agri-culture and industry. Our leadership haslent itself to a rich history that began in1837 with the founding of our communityand a manual labor college. That commu-nity became Galesburg; that collegebecame Knox College.

Our history includes Pulitzer Prize win-ning author Carl Sandburg. He gainedfame writing about the stark realities ofChicago in the 19th century and the lifeand times of Abraham Lincoln. Carl’s birth-place is a State Historic Site and museumthat exists as a testament to his humblebeginnings and as a legacy to his indeliblemark on America.

Galesburg was an important stop on theUnderground Railroad in Illinois. A “run-away slave was considered as free fromcapture when within (Galesburg’s) limitsas if in Canada,” according to the accountof Charles C. Chapman’s History of KnoxCounty, Illinois, published in 1878.Galesburg, due in large part to KnoxCollege, was perhaps the principal stationfor runaways in Western Illinois.

In the years leading up to the Civil Warand emancipation, Galesburg evolved andchanged. It rose from a sleepy collegehamlet to a railroad town. The populationexploded from just over 300 in 1850 toalmost 5,000 in 1860. The population dou-bled again by 1870 and grew steadily to

become a city of over 30,000 in the early20th century.

With that boom, came architecture, industry, retail and a growing importancein the railroad industry. Today, Galesburghas one of the largest classification yard’swith Burlington Northern Santa FeRailroad. Over 160 trains a day passthrough our community. All of thosetrains should mean a lot of whistles andrumbles. However, Galesburg is a QuietZone community thanks to the addition ofmajor grade separations with the WestMain Street “Don Moffitt Overpass” andthe Seminary/Kellogg “BickerdykeOverpass.” An East Main Street underpass, soon to begin construction, near down-town will silence the train whistles andmake Galesburg an easy place to navigate.

Galesburg is also a leading stop onAmtrak. With regular daily service to andfrom Chicago, as well as many points westall the way to San Francisco, Galesburg isjust a train ride away.

When visiting our community, stop bythe Welcome Center on East Main Street. We have all the information you need forhistory, food, lodging, entertainment, events and much more. We are here toassist you. With exception of a few giftitems, everything is free.

So, welcome! Enjoy your stay and writeyour own history in Galesburg, Illinois.

For decades Alumni Hall sat empty and in disrepair. It loomedover the campus and Galesburg as a reminder of ages past.Today, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a renovatedAlumni Hall that will stand as a monument to a community anda world class liberal arts college.

In 1890, U. S. President Benjamin Harrison laid the corner-stone of Alumni Hall cementing the building in the history ofKnox College. “Listed in the National Register of Historic Places,Alumni Hall dominates Knox’s northern edge and with OldMain, Seymour Union and Seymour Library, completes thecampus’ central quadrangle,” according to the publicationTransforming Alumni Hall.

Originally, Alumni Hall was meant to unite Knox’s two literarysocieties, Adelphi and Gnothautii.

Each group raised money for their wings. The AlumniAssociation raised the funds for the central section. Once com-pleted, the center section housed an auditorium that seatednearly 1000 people. It later became the Knox Library and thewings served as anything from a “Y Hut” during World War II,classrooms, bookstore and much more.

By the 1990’s the building fell silent and waited patiently for30 years for a renaissance. A dream was transformed into real-ity when thanks to the 700 alumni, parents, friends, faculty andstaff, and Galesburg community donors, gifts and pledgesreached $12.5 million. Members of the Knox College Board ofTrustees account for more than 60% of the total gifts raised.

“130 year old buildings don’t get renovated; especially thosethat sat empty for 30 years.” Those are the words of Kirk

Anderson, construction manager for P. J. Hoerr of Peoria, IL.They were the contractors that deconstructed Alumni Hall

and reconstructed it. It was a feat of engineering that willremain with Mr. Anderson for some time.

Alumni Hall was renovated utilizing a standard that shouldput the project on target to achieve a LEED (Leadership inEnergy & Environmental Design) Silver rating from the U. S.Green Building Council. “Environmental sustainability and thehealth of building occupants were strong considerations dur-ing the Alumni Hall planning process. During interior demoli-tion and construction, close to 95% of all material waste wasrecycled and reclaimed. The building’s exterior shell, in all itshistoric beauty, was preserved instead of demolished. Materialsused in construction include FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified lumber, recycled steel, and many regionally-sourcedmaterials. Floorings are low-VOC (volatile organic compound)and high recycled content.”

The building’s interior space has been transformed intooffices, technology centers, study rooms, Lincoln StudiesCenter, Alumni Relations, an atrium and the Heritage Center. The Heritage Center will be an evolving display area filled withthe history of Illinois, Galesburg & Knox College.

Alumni Hall is open to the public. The Heritage Center will bea place for visitors to see and learn about the History of ourgreat community and college.

Railfan(noun) /reIl/fæn/ railfanning (verb)

The history of the railroad in Galesburgis as old as the rail industry in America. It was by some bold maneuvering thatGalesburg would benefit from railroadexpansion. Being in the right place atthe right time helped make it all hap-pen.

It all started with Chauncey Colton. Hewas in Boston buying goods for hisstore in Galesburg.

He met two men, J. W. Grimes, alawyer from Burlington, Iowa. Grimeswould later become governor of Iowa. The other man is only remembered asWadsworth. He was in Boston to buygoods for HIS store in Aurora.

All three men were very much interest-ed in railroad endeavors. Each hadtheir own vision of what they neededfor success. Colton made the state-ment that would transform westernIllinois. “Here we are representingthree different projects, each havingthe same end in view; each road by

itself is worth nothing. Combined in asingle line the roads will prove a greatventure.” (From Earnest Elmo Caulkins’book – They Broke the Prairie, 1937)

The newly formed group would meetwith James F. Joy, a famed railroadbuilder. We would set a goal amountof $300,000 for construction, and adeadline that he would not waiverfrom. Stock subscriptions would raiseonly $250,000 for the railroad project,$50,000 short of the goal. When it

seemed the $50,000 would not beraised, Colton proclaimed he wouldput up $25,000 if Silas Willard wouldcover the remaining $25,000. Willardagreed and the Central Military TractRailroad would become a reality.

In 1854 the “Reindeer” was the firststeam locomotive to arrive inGalesburg. By comparison, the firststeam engine to arrive in Pittsburgh,PA was in 1851. Today, over 160 trainsa day travel through Galesburg.

Two time Pulitzer Prize winning author and poet, CarlSandburg was the subject of acclaimed artist Lonnie Stewart’ssculpture that was presented to Galesburg on April 23, 2014.It arrived at our Welcome Center on East Main Street and wasescorted in a processional to the Ameren building on BroadStreet that included Mr. Stewart, Penelope Niven (Sandburg’sBiographer), members of the Carl Sandburg Historic SiteAssociation and dignitaries from the community. It was atwelve year journey from concept to completion. PeteGorham, a Galesburg resident and historian, is a lifelongfriend of Lonnie Stewart. He presented his idea for aSandburg Statue to the Galesburg City Council in 2002.

In 2010, the Galesburg Arts Commission set about the task ofraising funds and commission-

ing the work by Mr. Stewart,a Knox College graduate

and world famous artistthat has called CentralIllinois home for manyyears. The sculptureis significant formany reasons. Notthe least of which isCarl’s continued pop-

ularity in America andbeyond. The collabora-

tion of Mr. Stewart as sculp-tor and Hagel's Metal

Fabrication of East Peoriabrought us to the final 9 foot tall

bronze masterpiece.

The statue has yet to find apermanent home. It ishoped, by the Galesburg

Arts Commission, to place the statue on the square at Main &Broad Streets. However, challenges with the sewer that runsunder the proposed site may prevent that from happening. In themeantime, this masterpiece can be viewed in the showroom ofthe former Galesburg Nissan building on Broad & Ferris Streets.

Sandburg has a companion sculpture to keep him companyin the years ahead. Nellie the Nubian Goat was also sculptedby Stewart and cast in bronze. Nellie is a direct descendent ofgoats raised at Sandburg’s home on Connemara in Flat Rock,North Carolina. There are still Nubian goats on the farm to

this day. It is said that young Carl tended and enjoyed thegoats raised by his family in Galesburg.

Sandburg’s biographer, Ms. Niven, began working on thebook as a high school English teacher in 1970’s. Though shedid not have a PhD in literature her groundbreaking work suc-ceeded in reviving interest in this nearly forgotten poet. Shewent on to write biographies on Thornton Wilder, the novelist-playwright who created the perennial American stage favorites“Our Town” and “The Skin of Our Teeth;” and Edward Steichen, the photographer also known as curator of a traveling photoexhibition, “The Family of Man.”

Carl Sandburg’s legacy remains in Galesburg. “I’ve traveledhere many times and I’m always amazed and grateful for whatthis town does for this poet,” Penelope Niven said. “You holdthe keys to his legacy and you keep the doors and windowsopen so he continues to be seen and heard and celebrated farand wide.”
