GREETINGS, Welcome to the GHSA -Tommy Guillebeau Football Championships presented by Georgia Farm Bureau. The players, coaches, cheerleaders and band members from these competing schools have put in many hours of work to prepare for this event. It is our hope that you will appreciate their skills and efforts in the magnificent setting of the Georgia Dome this weekend. The Georgia High School Association thanks you for your support of high school football throughout this season. Spectators are a very important part of all high school athletics, and this is especially true for the school for which you are cheering. We do want to remind you that good sportsmanship is an essential element of high school athletics, and today is no exception. Be positive in your support of all the participants. The GHSA office staff has been working for some time on the details that make these games special. Behind the scenes there is a group of hard-working volunteers who will donate many hours this weekend to make this experience better for all participants. The extremely skilled staff of the Georgia Dome works diligently to support the GHSA in this event, and they stand ready to as-sist you and your needs. We want to thank all these people for their dedicated work in making this a show-case event every year. The quality of GHSA events such as this one is made possible through the help of corporate partners whose ads are displayed in this program and around the field. The GHSA thanks these organizations, and we encourage you to support them whenever possible. People throughout the state of Georgia (and in parts of surrounding states) who cannot make it to the Dome this weekend will be able to share in the experience through live television production provided by Georgia Public Broadcasting. The GHSA thanks GPB for their fine work. These games are also being aired on a number of radio stations across the state on the GHSA Radio Network. Additionally, the games are to be streamed simultaneously on GPB.org/sports and on www.NFHSNetwork.com/GHSA. Now sit back and enjoy high school football at its finest - good luck to all!

GENERAL INFORMATIONThe Georgia Dome, the largest cable-supported domed stadium in the world, opened in 1992. Located in downtown Atlanta, the Dome is the home venue for the Atlanta Falcons, and played host to Super Bowl XXVIII and XXXIV, hosted the gymnastics and basketball events for the 1996 Olympic Games and hosted both a Men’s and Women’s NCAA Final Four. Annually, the Dome hosts the Bank of America Atlanta Football clas-sic, the SEC Football Championship and the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Dome is equipped to handle large non-sporting events which include everything from major trade shows to concerts by such entertainers as the Rolling Stones and U2 to religious events by such ministers as Billy Graham and T.D. Jakes.

BASIC FEATURESA total of 8,300 tons of reinforced steel was used to construct the Dome. That is more than the weight of iron and steel used in the Eiffel Tower. A 437-mile sidewalk, from Atlanta to Cincinnati, could be built from the 110,000 cubic yards of concrete used at the Dome. The building covers 8.9 acres and contains 1.6 million square feet on all seven levels. The 290-foot high roof is composed of 130 Teflon-coated fiberglass panels - cov-ering 8.6 acres. The roof’s supporting cable totals 11.1 miles and the Dome is as tall as a 27-story building.

UPCOMING EVENTSIn addition to Atlanta Falcons home games and the SEC championship game, the Geor-gia Dome hosts the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the HBCU All-Star Bowl, Monster Jam, the Honda Battle of the Bands. For a complete schedule of events at the Georgia Dome, please visit www.gadome.com.

The playoffs would not be complete without miraculous finishes and late-game heroics. The undefeated Hornets dialed up what was the

most memorable finish of the 2015 postseason in last week’s semis. In the battle of unbeatens, Grayson took a 26-23 lead when kicker Will VanPamelen hit a 19-yard field goal that put the Rams up by three with 35 seconds left to play. Roswell took over on its own 35-yard line with no timeouts left and in need of season-saving play. On 3rd and 10, quarterback Quintarius Neely hit Kendrick Jackson for a 35-yard crossing route that moved Roswell into striking distance. Roswell rushed to the line and Neely spiked the ball to stop the clock with 18 seconds to play. Neely dropped back the next snap and hit A.J. Smith on a 35-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass with 10 seconds to play, capping a remarkable 30-26 win over Grayson. Smith was well covered on the heave, but leapt up and snagged the winning touchdown on his only catch of the game. Roswell (14-0) overcame four lost fumbles in the victory and returns to the state championship for the first time since 2006, when the Hornets ended up sharing the title with Peachtree Ridge. Neely has led the offense at a championship level this season. The Lovejoy transfer has accounted for 2,444 yards and 31 passing touchdowns with just five interceptions, while adding nine rushing scores. In the backfield, Sheldon Evans has rushed for 1,684 yards and 27 touchdowns this year. Junior Jayden Comma hauled in a game-high 139 receiving yards off six catches in the semis and has 12 scores. Defensively, 6-foot-4, 240-pound linebacker Tre’ Lamar leads the middle of the field and juniors Xavier McKinney and Leanthony Williams spark a ball-hawking secondary. McKinney and Williams are both listed as four-star prospects and are in the top 25 for Georgia’s Class of 2017. McKinney is a 6-foot-1 safety committed to Alabama and Williams holds offers from Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Florida and Georgia amongst others.

The defending champion Packers continue to make history while representing Georgia as one of the top high school football teams in

the country. Under head coach Rush Propst, Colquitt County has become a nationally-recognized powerhouse. Within the state of Georgia, the Packers are the team to beat and for good reason. Colquitt County rides a 29-game win streak into the finals, but it is the complete body of work under Propst the past seven seasons that shows the true success and rise of the program, as well as the unprecedented playoff experience they carry into Saturday’s final. Following a 4-6 finish in Propst’s first season (2008), Colquitt County has averaged 12 wins per season in each year since. This will be the 31st playoff game the team has played in the last seven seasons. The Packers have won 25 of their 30 playoff games under Propst, including 15 of 19 on the road. The Packers are a perfect 9-0 at home in the postseason under Propst and have reached the finals three times since 2010. This year’s team is led by one of the most explosive offenses Propst has ever coached. The unit has averaged 47.9 points per game this season, while outscoring opponents by 29.2 points per contest. Senior quarterback Chase Parrish is the commander of the offense and threw for a school-record 431 yards and six touchdowns last Friday in the Packers’ 52-31 win at Mill Creek. Parrish has tossed 39 touchdowns this season and has gone for 3,190 yards through the air. His favorite target is the physical Arkansas-commit Kiel Pollard, who can do it all. Pollard has rushed for 11 scores while hauling in a team-high 18 touchdown passes this season. Pollard can take snaps out of the Wildcat, battle for jump balls and take slants or screens the length of the field on any snap. Ty Lee is another versatile piece to the offense and the shifty playmaker teams up with Ty Powell to form what has been an unstoppable stable of skill players. Both Lee and Powell accounted for two touchdowns in the semifinal victory over the Hawks.

CLASS AAAAAA SKINNYSaturday marks the first time since 2009 (Camden County and Northside-WR) that the finals matchup in the state’s largest classification does not feature a Gwinnett County school. Roswell beat three Gwinnett schools this postseason (Parkview, Collins Hill, Grayson) to reach the finals, while Colquitt County eliminated Central Gwinnett and Mill Creek on its road to the Georgia Dome. In order for Roswell to complete its perfect season, the Hornets will be tasked with limiting the explosive plays that Colquitt County uses as its metaphorical knockout punches. The Packers are a patient, fundamental and physical football team, but their downfield and perimeter blocking combines with a deep cast of playmakers that bring a level of explosiveness that Roswell has not faced this season. In the semifinals, the Packers busted out five touchdowns of 48 or more yards and three scores of 73 or more yards. Roswell must limit the playmaking ability of Colquitt County’s Kiel Pollard, Ty Lee, Ty Powell and company to gain control of the game.

Allatoona has had to overcome adversity since the first round of the playoffs when the team’s leading rusher Russell Halimon went down in

the opening quarter with a knee injury. The Arizona commitment paced the Bucs with 1,543 rushing yards before his injury against Winder-Barrow, but the offense has made the necessary adjustments while finding new sources of production. Quarterback Brandon Rainey has risen to the occasion at a record-setting pace and the offense has managed to rush for 268 yards per game in the playoffs without Halimon. Allatoona hosted No. 1 Houston County in the quarterfinals and Rainey led the Bucs to an unforgettable 59-47 victory. The senior accounted for a school-record seven rushing touchdowns and a season-high 106 yards on the ground. Defensively, the win did not sit well for Allatoona after giving up a staggering 534 yards of offense, but the Bucs once again made adjustments and locked down Northgate the following week. In the semifinals, Allatoona held Northgate scoreless for the first three quarters and allowed just 196 total yards in a 28-7 victory. Rainey got it done on the offensive end again with a 1-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter and a 93-yard touchdown pass to Turner Cockrell on the Bucs’ next possession. Cockrell is a 6-foot-5 tight end committed to Vanderbilt that has developed into an excellent blocker and weapon in the passing game. Rainey put the game out of reach with another 1-yard run on the second play of the second quarter. Rainey has proven to be a dangerous passing threat and has completed 82 of 140 attempts this season for 1579 yards, 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions. His 20 rushing touchdowns leads the team. Defensively, Danny Tesler had two interceptions last Friday and the team as a whole has 16 interceptions on the year. Faizon Harris leads the secondary and had a season-high five pass breakups in the quarterfinals victory over Houston County. Junior Michael Robinson leads the team in tackles with nearly 10 per game. Robinson totaled a season-high 16 tackles in Allatoona’s 30-14 second round victory over Starr’s Mill.

Glynn Academy enters the state championship after successfully conquering one of the toughest roads to the Dome seen this

postseason. The Terrors opened the playoffs with Jones County at home and travelled nearly 400 miles in the second round to Dalton where they walked away with a 20-13 win. The quarterfinals saw a defining moment of the playoff run as head coach Rocky Hidalgo’s team faced what appeared to be certain defeat. Undefeated Stockbridge led 21-7 in the fourth quarter and lined up a yard away from making it 28-7 before the defense came up with the game-saving stop on fourth down. With the ball inside its 1-yard line, Glynn Academy shifted the momentum by driving 99-yards for the score as Kendall Cross rumbled in a 25-yard touchdown. The defense forced a Stockbridge punt, and senior Garrison Hurd ran the ball down to the 5-yard line to set up Cross’ game-tying score. With 14 seconds left, Banks Entwistle booted through a game-winning 30-yard field goal (24-21). Last Friday, Glynn Academy battled past rival Ware County 24-16 in another thriller. Ware County completed their final pass but was dragged down just shy of the touchdown at the one-yard line to end the game. Quarterback and UGA-commit Deejay Dallas hit Randon Jernigan on a 45-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, Hurd scored from a yard out, Cross found the end zone, Entwistle drilled a field goal with 6:56 to play and Xavier McClinton intercepted a pass with 1:42 remaining to contribute to another team victory. Glynn Academy now sits one win away from a school record 13th victory and its first state title since 1964. Hidalgo has produced a quick turnaround since arriving at the school last year from his five-year run as head coach at Walton High School. Hidalgo previously led the Raiders to their first state finals in 2011 with a perfect record before falling to Grayson.

CLASS AAAAA SKINNYAllatoona (13-1) is the first Cobb County public school to reach the championship game since 2011, when Walton lost to Grayson in the final. That Walton team was coached by Rocky Hidalgo, who is now the coach at Glynn Academy. Hidalgo’s Terrors ride a 10-game winning streak after dropping back-to-back losses to Camden County and Coffee. Allatoona lost its first game of the season to East Paulding but have tied last year’s school-record 13 straight victories to reach the finals for the first time. The biggest factor of this game will be Glynn Academy’s team speed against Allatoona head coach Gary Varner’s defense. Glynn Academy quarterback Deejay Dallas is a four-star athlete and one of the top juniors in the state. He is the rare type of athlete that can score on any given play and he brings versatility to an offense that will take a total team effort from Allatoona to contain.

Buford’s quest for a twelfth state championship has been a check-ered one compared to years past. A 42-game winning streak which

spanned two and a half seasons including back-to-back 15-0 campaigns, was shattered in non-Buford like style, losing to McEachern 37-14. The Wolves had a handful of starters missing, but still, seeing Buford on the wrong end of the scoreboard was something fans in the state of Geor-gia hadn’t seen in a mind numbing 1,071 days. After shaking off the loss, coach Jess Simpson’s team got right back to work, winning 11-straight games including six shutouts. The defense is anchored by North Carolina State commit Shug Frazier up front. Standing 6-foot-2 and 320 pounds, Frazier is an intimidating run stopper that has shown the ability to blow up blockers and get to the quarterback. He is joined by North Paulding transfer Dale Craig, a Middle Tennessee State bound linebacker. Craig has brought a solidifying force over the middle that has helped the Wolves allow just over 7.1 points per game this season. Two-way athletes Martin Mangram, Caleb Auer and Georgia Tech commit Xavier Gantt fly all over the field both offensively and defensively making plays. The go-to man under center who makes things click is signal caller Mic Roof. The junior isn’t asked to sling the ball around like his counterpart, but he does a good job of hitting his spots and has thrown for over 1,300 yards. The grinding rushing attack of the Wolves is what most teams can’t stop. The three-headed attack of Anthony Grant, Christian Turner and Mangram all have over 600 yards rushing and more than 40 touchdowns between them. Mangram rushed for 122 yards against Woodward Academy in the semifinals and scored three times. The Wolves rallied from down 18-7 to ease past the War Eagles, 35-18. Star running back and UGA commit Eli-jah Holyfield of Woodward was held to just 72 yards on the night. Buford has ratcheted up its play this postseason, outscoring opponents by an average 40 to 6 as the Wolves seek their fourth straight championship.

It has been 16 years since the Hurricanes captured their second state title in 1999. Behind a more seasoned Trevor Lawrence under center,

a balanced overall offense and an improved defense, coach Joey King hopes year-two will yield the grand prize. King has gone 26-2 over his two year stint in Bartow County and many of those wins have come via the big arm of Cartersville’s sophomore quarterback. Lawrence has thrown for 3,522 yards, 42 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season, but the Canes are more than just an air raid offense. Senior running back Tiamon Pennymon has carried the Cartersville offense at times. He has rushed for nearly 700 yards and has 20 touchdowns on the ground. Through the air, tight end and Alabama commit Miller Forristall is a matchup nightmare with his 6-foot-5 frame and great athleticism. He originally played quarterback before Lawrence showed up last season and took Cartersville to the next level. He has caught 54 passes for 881 yards and 10 scores. Lawrence’s favorite target has been Terrius Callahan. His 62 catches, 1,187 yards and 16 touchdowns lead coach King’s offense. Defensively, the Hurricanes allow 7.6 points per game. Kobie Whitfield spearheads the secondary and provides game-breaking plays. Against Bainbridge in the semifinals, Whitfield intercepted two passes and returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown to spark a 38-7 rout. Xavior Coaxum and Antoine Jefferson are two more pieces of a stingy Hurricane secondary while Tyler Reed is always among the team leaders in tackles each week from his middle linebacker position. The Canes have steamrolled their way to the state championship, beating Columbia, Liberty County, Jonesboro and Bainbridge by a combined 146-35. Their rematch with Buford from last season’s state semifinals marks the first time the Purple Hurricanes have played for the state title since 1999’s 15-0 Class AA state championship team, when they defeated Hart County 27-21.

CLASS AAAA SKINNYIn a rematch of last year’s semifinal meeting, the Purple Hurricanes of Cartersville will attempt to solve the puzzle that is Buford, the 11-time state champs and three-time defending winners. Cartersville fell to Buford 27-3 in 2014; the second time the Wolves ended their season in the semis, with the first com-ing in 2012, 21-10. Buford was able to shut down the explosive Cartersville offense led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence. As a freshman, he was held to just 126 yards and an interception on 18-of-39 passing. As a sophomore he has taken his game to another level, passing for 3,522 yards, 42 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Coach Jess Simpson will lean on his defense one more time this season and hope history repeats itself in terms of slowing down the Canes’ offense. North Carolina State commit Shug Frazier will bring pressure up the middle, testing the Cartersville line. Linebacker Dale Craig and cornerback Martin Mangram will be integral parts in stopping the Canes.

Westminster opened the season 3-4 overall and 1-2 in region play. The slow start was illuminated by a Week 5 loss to Therrell (3-7),

25-23. In came Blessed Trinity on senior night and the Titans walked out of Henderson Stadium with a 24-10 win; already twice as many losses as the 2014 team that went 12-2 and lost in the semifinals. After that loss to Blessed Trinity, the season turned around for coach Gerry Romberg. Seven consecutive wins later and the Wildcats are playing for their first title since winning it all in 1978 against Dalton, 17-0. The offense turned things around behind quarterback Rankin Woley and running back Zay Malcome. Through their first seven games of the season, the Wildcats averaged 25.8 points per game. Through their final seven, they have posted 38.5 per game and have been handily defeating opponents. Scoring outbursts of 49 and 51 points against Callaway and Adairsville in the second and quarterfinal rounds has the Wildcats believing they can play with anyone. In last week’s semifi-nal meeting with Region 4 rival Cedar Grove, Westminster used 146 rushing yards from Malcome to advance to the Dome, with a 24-8 win. As good as their offense has been the Wildcat defense flexed its muscle against Cedar Grove, allowing just two first downs in the first half. Westminster has been road warriors the entire post season, play-ing every game on the road. The Wildcats have actually played and won seven straight road games. In the quarterfinals at Adairsville, they exploded for their highest scoring output of the season, winning 51-21. Woley did everything, tossing two touchdowns, running for a score and adding a 31-yard interception return for six. His versatility is some-thing that Romberg will rely heavily on in the title game. A not-so se-cret weapon this season for the Cats has been the kicking game. Blake Gillikin is a Penn State commit and booted a school-record 56-yarder in the quarterfinals.

The Titans have finally reached the mountain top. Now it is just time to plant their flag. Blessed Trinity has been slowly improving each

season and now the opportunity to bring home the program’s first state title is here. After back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2012 and 2013, the Titans rumbled to a 13-0 start before falling in the semifinals to eventual state runner-up Washington County, 28-17. That loss has fueled coach Tim McFarlin’s team into another unbeaten season. The Titans’ lone tie came in the region championship against Cedar Grove, 13-13. Though Blessed Trinity rolls into the title game, it hasn’t been without adversity. Starting quarterback Conor Davis injured his shoul-der and missed the majority of the Jefferson game in round two and the entire quarterfinal meeting with Dawson County. An Auburn com-mit in baseball, Davis gutted his way through a 12-7 win over defending state champion Calhoun in the semifinals. He completed 7-of-15 pass-es for 78 yards and now has 1,392 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season. Senior running back Garrett Dupuis carried the load in the low scoring game with 60 yards and a score. He has 592 yards rushing on the season and a second-best 110 tackles on the year. Dupuis made 10 stops in the win. Calhoun had a first-and-goal from the Blessed Trinity 4-yardline, but the goal line defense stood and sent the Titans onto unchartered territory – the Georgia Dome. Blessed Trinity would have never gotten to this point however if it weren’t for the play of freshman quarterback Jake Smith, who stepped up during Davis’ absence. He completed 20-of-28 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns in his two games of action. No matter who is playing quarterback, the num-ber one option on offense is senior running back Milton Shelton. He has run for 1,806 yards and 27 touchdowns to power the Titan offense.

CLASS AAA SKINNYThe Class AAA championship features a rematch of an early game between familiar Region 4 foes. Blessed Trinity has won five straight games against Westminster including a 24-10 road victory on Oct. 16. Milton Shelton sprinted 85 yards for a back breaking touchdown with 4:50 to play to shatter any hopes of a Wildcat victory. He finished with 174 yards on the ground and will be Westminster’s main target to stop this time around. Westminster running back Zay Malcome totaled 55 yards and Rankin Woley was held to 91 yards passing in the defeat. The Wildcats have won seven straight games since dropping to the Titans. If the game comes down to special teams, Westminster will have the advantage with Penn State-commit Blake Gillikin at kicker.

Fitzgerald (13-1) will play for a state title for the fourth time in school history just one season removed from a 12-2 record and a trip to the

Class AA semifinals. The Purple Hurricanes finished second in Region 1-AA, dropping their only game to region-foe Brooks County in the eighth week of the season. The Purple Hurricanes have breezed through the Class AA state playoffs with relative ease. After taking down Putnam County 51-15 in their lone home playoff game, they beat region 5-AA champion Heard County 24-7 to set up a quarterfinal matchup with reigning Class AA state champion Benedictine. In one of Class AA’s most impressive victories other than Pace’s win over GAC, Fitzgerald stomped Benedictine 54-28 and ended their 20-game winning streak. They followed that huge win up with a 40-20 victory over another region champion, Jefferson County last Friday. The Fitzgerald offense continues to put up huge numbers each week. The team’s superstar junior running back JD King has rushed for an astounding 2,380 yards on 319 carries (7.5 yards per carry) and 30 touchdowns. He has rushed for 100 yards in every game except for one, including three 200-plus yard performances and a 332-yard, three-touchdown performance against top-ranked Benedictine. Colleges have flocked to scout King’s toughness and talent and Georgia Southern has already offered him a scholarship. Sophomore quarterback James Graham has also found most of his success on the ground. He has rushed for 1,292 yards on 171 carries (7.56 yards per carry) and 15 touchdowns even after missing the team’s eighth regular season game against Pelham. Starting their football program back in 1908, the team has a long history of success and has become one of South Georgia’s most successful programs. Fitzgerald has made the playoffs in each of the last 15 seasons (31 total times) and has 18 region titles. They also have been state runner-ups three times (1964, 1969, 2000) and won the state title back in 1948.

Pace Academy (12-2) makes its first appearance in the state championship game in school history, while riding a school-record

seven game winning streak. The program started back in 2008, and this is only the Knights; third winning season and third playoff appearance. After starting the season 5-0, they were dealt back-to-back region losses to Wesleyan (18-9) and Greater Atlanta Christian (33-13). They won their final three regular season games to pick up the fourth-seed in region 6-AA. Their path to the Class AA finals has all been on the road. They knocked off Darlington 31-0, and followed that up with a 27-7 win over Screven County. Then, the Knights took care of Macon County 33-26, and avenged their earlier loss to Greater Atlanta Christian by beating them 45-20 in the semifinals. The Knights have used a successful balanced attack on offense throughout the season. Sophomore quarterback Gunnor Faulk leads the team with 1,516 yards passing, while completing 119-of-191 attempts (62.3 percent) with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. His main target is junior Trey Blount who has caught 30 passes for 582 yards (19.4 yards per reception) and nine touchdowns. Blount caught four passes and accounted for 101 of the team’s 201 receiving yards while scoring two touchdowns in the semifinals. Their biggest contribution has come from their ground game, which has been a running back by committee. Five Knights’ players, led by junior Deon Jackson have helped the team average north of 200 rushing yards per game. Jackson has accounted for 1,448 yards on the ground on 137 carries (10.5 yards per rush), seven touchdowns and four 100-yard or more games. Prior to this historic season, the team’s highest season win total was nine when they finished 9-2 in 2010, losing in the first round of the Class A state playoffs. Their best finish came in 2014 when they made it to the Class AA state quarterfinals, although they finished the regular season with a 5-5 record.

CLASS AA SKINNYThe matchup to watch will be the Fitzgerald offense against the front seven from Pace. The Knights defense plays at a championship level allowing only 14.6 points per game but Fitzgerald has lit up the scoreboard for 39.6 points per game this postseason. No team has been able to stop Fitzgerald’s JD King, so Pace must find the formula to contain him and force Graham test an athletic secondary through the air. Pace Academy linebacker Philip Markwalter leads the team with 19 tackles for loss, which will be important in trying to make the Purple Hurricanes one-dimensional. The teams meet for only the second time ever with Fitzgerald beating Pace in the 2014 Class AA quarterfi-nals 49-21 at Jaycee Stadium.

The Chargers are on a redemption tour back to the Class-A Private State Championship Game. After falling in the finals last year and losing in

overtime in the 2013 semis, the Chargers are looking for nothing less than a second state title in school history after winning their first three years ago in 2012. The road to the Georgia Dome for ELCA has not been as treacherous in the postseason, but the battle-tested Chargers took their lumps at the start of the season with their annual gauntlet of power-house opponents. ELCA started the season 3-3 with losses at the hands of Stockbridge, Greater Atlanta Christian and Woodward Academy. All three opponents were in higher classifications including Class AAAAA Stockbridge and Class AAAA semifinalist Woodward Academy. In the seven games since the late September loss to Woodward, the Chargers have averaged 46.4 points per game, with seven straight victories. The road to another state championship appearance started against Mount Pisgah Christian in a first round drubbing as ELCA won 45-7. Running back Trevor Gear scored three touchdowns in a game the Chargers led 35-0 at halftime. Their second round game would be a rematch of the 2014 Class-A Private state championship game against Mount Paran Christian, a game the Chargers lost 49-7. This year the result would be much differ-ent as ELCA won 31-7 behind a big game performance from wide receiv-er Cam Meritt who finished the game with five catches for 135 yards. In the semifinals ELCA faced Prince Avenue Christian and its high-powered Wing-T offense, however the Charger defense would be up for the task. The defense allowed only 14 points, as ELCA would win 35-14. Quarter-back Donald Hammond scored four touchdowns on the night including three on the ground. The Chargers have had plenty of recent success in the past five years reaching the semifinals all five seasons and the state championship three times including this season. They will look to bring home the second football state title in school history to McDonough.

The Fightin’ Irish enter the state championship game with a record of 12-1 and have not tasted defeat since August. Head coach

James Leonard is looking to repeat the success he found in 2013 as he helped bring home a state championship for Aquinas for the first time in school history. The path to the Dome for Aquinas started off with a 42-7 win over Brookstone in the first round as quarterback Liam Welch found pay dirt four times on the night. The second round would be a dogfight as the Fightin’ Irish held off Christian Heritage, who missed a field goal as time expired, 28-27. Running back D’Angelo Durham led Aquinas with three rushing touchdowns. In the semifinals the Fightin’ Irish were in another game that featured plenty of punch against Stratford Academy. After leading 28-14 with 6:37 remaining in the fourth quarter Stratford Academy ran in a goal-line touchdown to cut the two-touchdown deficit in half. A successful onside kick and 23-yard touchdown knotted it at 28-28 and put pressure on Aquinas to reclaim the lead. They responded with a Liam Welch touchdown pass to brother George Welch, the second touchdown connection for the brothers on the night, to take back the lead. The Fightin’ Irish defense stepped up late and clinched the victory as they stuffed Stratford on fourth-and-goal with 12 seconds left to secure a trip to the Dome. Aquinas brings firepower and balance with Liam Welch, who has totaled 29 touchdowns this season, including 18 in the air and just two interceptions. His primary receivers George Welch and Justin Gibbs have combined to catch 13 touchdowns this season. While the passing game has had plenty of success, the Fightin’ Irish use an effective run game as well behind Durham who has 17 touchdowns and well over 1,000 yards and Chris Gates who has found the end zone 13 times on the ground this season.

CLASS A-PRIVATE SKINNYThe Class A-Private State Championship will feature plenty of offense in a game that could come down to one defensive stop or forced turnover. Aqui-nas comes into the game averaging 38.5 points per game, including putting up over 40 points in seven contests this season. On the other side ELCA has averaged over 46 points on its current seven game winning streak, while only allowing nine points to their opponents. Aquinas is led by a balanced offense that features quarterback Liam Welch, who already has one state championship under his belt, a 2013 State Championship win over Calvary Day 27-7. Welch has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards, while scoring 29 total touchdowns. ELCA will look for cornerback Tre’ Douglas to lead the passing defense against Aquinas.

Clinch County’s only loss this season came at Irwin County as the Indians wrapped up a 28-12 victory but the Panthers have made

great strides offensively since the setback that has fueled the current nine-game winning streak. Clinch County opened the playoffs with a 30-8 win over Dooly County and followed it with a 50-34 win over Johnson County in the quarterfinals. The semifinals set up a showdown with Commerce and it was timely plays on both sides of the football that sent the Panthers to the Dome with a 26-19 victory. Zebulon Johnson broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run with 2:30 remaining to push the Panthers ahead. Commerce took over looking to answer with a game-tying drive but Machari Bighams sealed the game with an interception with 1:51 left. Trezman Marshall scored on a 48-yard touchdown run and Shannon Young punched in touchdowns of one and two yards in the semis. Young found success in Clinch’s trip to Irwin County in December as he finished with 83 rushing yards on 15 carries and scored both of the Panthers’ touchdowns. Johnson, who scored the game-winning touchdown in the semifinals saw just two carries in the loss to Irwin County but averaged more than 100 rushing yards per game the next three games, while finding the end zone six times. Johnson has developed into a reliable playmaker that can run and catch out of the backfield. Marshall carried the ball 14 times for 86 yards against Irwin County, in what was just the freshman’s fourth varsity game. Head coach Jim Dickerson has championship experience and has led the Panthers to six region titles and two state titles (2004, 2010) in his 12 years at the helm.

Irwin County looks to snap a 40-year championship drought Friday at the Georgia Dome and bring home the school’s second state title.

The Indians fell just short of bringing home the state crown last year in a 15-6 loss to Hawkinsville, but are back and set to face a Clinch County team they already defeated 28-12 on Sept. 18 of this season. Irwin County has won four of its last five games with Clinch County but this will be the first time the two Region 2 rivals have squared off twice in a season since 1992. Irwin County survived a wild 19-15 finish in the semifinals against a red-hot Emanuel County Institute team. Irwin County took the four-point lead with 8:04 left as D.J. Pollard hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Zach Tolar but the drama had just begun. Emanuel County Institute drove down the field with a 46-yard pass from Rhett Gay to David Durden on a 3rd and 15 and eventually set up a 1st and goal with five minutes left. Irwin County stuffed the Bulldogs and took over on downs with 3:25 left, but the game was far from over. Irwin County fumbled the next play and ECI recovered and was back in action with a 1st and goal from the 10-yard line just five seconds later. William Lewis sacked Gay on 1st down and Ricky Lee was held to just one yard on 2nd down. Dazhun Steele hauled in a reception on 3rd down to take ECI to the 7-yard line but on 4th down, a pass to Durden fell incomplete in the end zone and Irwin County was able to kneel out for victory. Irwin County took its first lead with a 67-yard touchdown run by Pollard in the second quarter but failed the PAT and led just 6-0. A 2-yard touchdown by Tolar put the Indians up 12-7 before Lee scored his second touchdown to put ECI up 15-12 before Pollard’s game-winner.

CLASS A-PUBLIC SKINNYThe Class A-Public Championship is a Region 2 showdown as rivals Irwin County and Clinch County meet for the second time this season. No. 3 seeded Irwin County took the first matchup 28-12 at home, but the fifth-seeded Panthers have made it through the playoffs riding a 9-game winning streak with a much more developed offense that has matured since the teams faced in September. Irwin County will use playmaker D.J. Pollard to balance the offense as a receiving threat and running threat that can produce home run plays. The Clinch County defense will be challenged by the Pollard-led Indians and the Panthers offense will have to produce big plays of their own from their versatile junior running back Shannon Young to pressure the Indians defense.

The Georgia High School Association and Georgia’s Electric Membership Corporations (Georgia EMC) proudly announce the 48 GHSA-member high schools that will receive the 2015 Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award. The award honors schools that demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship during the 2014-2015 school year.

“Sportsmanship is an essential element in the mission of education-based athletics,” says Gary Phil-lips, GHSA Executive Director. “Good sporting behavior involves many important values that influence the behavior of productive citizens. The GHSA appreciates the efforts of Georgia EMC to recognize schools that have excelled at good sportsmanship.”

Since 2006, the GHSA and Georgia’s EMCs have sponsored the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award, which reinforces the GHSA philosophy: “Students, athletes, coaches, spectators and all others associated with high school activities programs should adhere to the fundamental values of respect, fairness, honesty and responsibility.” Schools around the state are honored for exhibiting exceptional sportsmanship during competitive events.

Student athletes, fellow students, school staff, parents and event spectators are recognized for the sports-manship they display. The award is not only a school honor, but a community honor as well. The GHSA region secretaries select winners based upon the sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the school year.

Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards are presented annually to the GHSA-member high schools in the 48 regions from the six classifications by representatives from the EMCs during fall athletic events and school assemblies. Winners of the 2015 Georgia EMC Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award are:

GHSA SPORTSMANSHIP STATEMENT “The GHSA and its member schools have made a commitment to promote good sportsmanship by student/athletes, coaches, and spectators at all GHSA sanctioned events. Profanity, degrading remarks, and intimidating actions directed at officials or competitors will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the event site. Spectators are not allowed to enter the competition area during warm-ups or while the contest is being conducted. Thank you for your cooperation in the promotion of good sportsmanship at today’s event.”
