Just last week the ACU Wildcats were coming off a disappointing 20-10 loss to Stephen F. Austin and headed to San Antonio to take on a well-rested squad from Incarnate Word that had won two straight at home against the Wildcats. But the Wildcats got themselves back together last Saturday with a dominant 45-20 win over the Cardinals that wasn’t as close as the score would suggest. ACU’s defense limited UIW to just 237 yards of total offense and 11 first downs, and UIW scored a garbage-time touchdown against the ACU backups to make the final score closer than the game appeared. Now ACU returns to Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium to take on a McNeese football program that it has never beaten in four attempts, including all three games between the teams as Southland Conference foes (2004-16). The only time McNeese has ever played in Abilene was in 2015 when the Cowboys came away with a 15-13 win over the Wildcats in quarterback Dallas Sealey’s first game as a starter.

“P4X” P4X is for the Play 4 Rex Foundation, which was established in March 2013 after the death of 10-year-oldRex Fleming, the son ofACU associate AD for media relations LanceFleming. Rex fought braincancer for two years before passing away in November 2012. The foundation raises money to aid those who are dealing with and living with pediatric cancer.

McNEESE at ACU

ACU HEAD COACH ADAM DORREL

dam Dorrel – who has led his teams to remarkable conference and national playoff success the past six

seasons – was introduced Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head coach in ACU football history.

Dorrel joined the ACU staff after leading his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University, to its second straight NCAA Division II national championship and third under his watch. In six seasons as a head coach, Dorrel has compiled a 76-8 record, a 90.5 winning percentage that is the best active mark in college football, ahead of Ohio State University’s Urban Meyer (second at 85.5 percent). Dorrel led the Bearcats to the NCAA Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and coached them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at Northwest. That 30-game streak is the longest in the nation at any level, besting Alabama’s 25-game winning streak by five games.

He also was voted the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Division II Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, and 2016 when he led the Bearcats to national titles. Aside from their prowess on the field, the Bearcats also have been successful in the classroom. Northwest student-athletes have had a higher cumulative GPA than the rest of the student body for more than 10 years. The football program is part of that, carrying a cumulative team GPA of 2.89 in Fall 2015 with three student-athletes earning a 4.0 GPA and another 62 earning at least a 3.0 GPA. Northwest football players have earned more than 200 academic all-MIAA citations since 2011 and six have earned academic all-America honors.

Dorrel inherits an ACU program that just completed its transition period from Division II status to Division I (FCS) affiliation, and in 2017 will be eligible to win the conference title and reach the national playoffs. The Wildcats also will be moving into a new venue (Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium), the first time they will have an on-campus stadium to call home since 1946, the last full season they played at A.B. Morris Field.

ACU, however, is just 5-17 over the last two seasons and resides in the Southland Conference, one of the top FCS leagues in the country. The challenge for Dorrel will be to quickly build his staff,

hit the recruiting trail in advance of the Feb. 1, national signing day for high school athletes, and get to know the players on his current roster.

Prior to being named head coach, Dorrel was the offensive coordinator for the Bearcats from 2007-10, four times facing ACU when the Wildcats were members of the Lone Star Conference. The teams split four games with the Wildcats winning two

regular season contests and the Bearcats winning two playoff games (2008 in Abilene and 2009 in Maryville, Mo.).

During that stretch, Dorrel helped the Bearcats to an unprecedented five consecutive Division II championship appearances and their third national title in 2009.

Dorrel became the 19th head coach in Northwest history in 2011, succeeding Mel Tjeerdsma who retired after 17 seasons in 2010. In Dorrel’s 12 seasons with the Bearcats since joining their coaching staff in 2004, they have a 152-21 record and seven MIAA championships.

After earning his bachelor’s degree from Northwest in 1998, Dorrel spent a year as a graduate assistant at Northeastern State University (Okla.). He returned to the Bearcats as a graduate assistant in 1999 when the team won the second of its back-to-back national titles.

He completed his master’s degree at Northwest in 2000. Dorrel was an assistant coach at Dakota State University in

South Dakota and William Jewell College in Missouri before being appointed offensive line coach at Northwest in 2004. He became offensive coordinator in 2007 and then head coach prior to the 2011 season.

He is a former all-America offensive lineman and three-year captain at Northwest. He graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and earned his Master of Science (health and physical education) in 2000.

A Maryville, Mo., native, Dorrel also was a two-time all-district and all-conference lineman at Maryville High School. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin 6 year-old daughters, Allie and Sam. n

What They're Saying About Adam Dorrel“Adam Dorrel has done a tremendous job leading the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat football program. He inherited a program that had been through a significant amount of transition in a short period of time. What he has done to build on a proud Northwest tradition is simply amazing. The past six years at Northwest are among the greatest for any program in college football history in terms of both competitive and academic excellence. Adam is a people person who is warm and genuine. His passion is contagious. ACU is getting an outstanding coach and excellent recruiter who knows how to build a highly successful program. But more than that, they are getting a servant leader who loves student-athletes and will serve as a great role model for those around him. Congratulations to ACU and Adam.”

— Wren Baker Vice President and Director of Athletics University of North Texas

“Adam Dorrel is one of the most outstanding young coaches in college football. His six years as head coach at Northwest Missouri State University have been truly amazing. Coach Dorrel’s organizational skills and his ability to get everyone working together towards a common goal are his greatest assets. Abilene Christian University is fortunate to have him as its head football coach.”

— Mel Tjeerdsma Director of Athletics Northwest Missouri State University

DORREL BY THE NUMBERS (PRIOR TO 2017 SEASON)

• Winningest active head coach in NCAA football (90 .5 winning percentage)

• Head coach of three NCAA Division II national championship teams (2013, 2015, 2016) • Led Northwest Missouri State to wins in each of his final 30 games as the head coach • Only coach in NCAA Division II history to win three national titles with perfect 15-0 records in each season

• One of only three head coaches in NCAA Division II history to win three national championships

I believe that with the commitment ACU is making to athletics in general and football in particular that this is a sleeping giant.”

96th Season of Wildcat Football

ACU will be playing its 96th season of college football in 2017. The Wildcats enter the season with an all-time record of 486-411-32 (.540 winning percentage). ACU should be playing its 99th season of football, but it didn’t field a team from 1943-45 because of World War II.

Seventeen Starters Are Back

ACU returns 17 starters from the 2016 squad that finished 2-9 overall and 2-7 in the Southland Conference. The Wildcats should be returning 18 starters, but offensive lineman Riley Mayfield graduated in May and took his two years of remaining eligibility with him to North Texas, leaving the Wildcats a gaping hole to fill on the offensive line. Nine starters return on offense, led by junior quarterback Dallas Sealey and senior running back De’Andre Brown. Sealey was one of the most proudctive signal-callers in the league in 2016, while Brown will be looking to rebound from an injury-plagued junior season to find the form he disaplayed his first two seasons when he ran for more than 1,700 yards. The Wildcats will also be without the services of wide receiver D.J. Fuller in 2017 as he sits out because of eligibility issues. Fuller is expected to redshirt in 2017 and return for the 2018 season. Defensively, the Wildcats return seven starters, although Bryson Gates returns but is switching from outside linebacker to rush defensive end. Middle linebacker Sam Denmark continues his pursuit of the all-time ACU record for tackles, needing just 63 to surpass Ryan Boozer (1999- 02) for the all-time record. ACU returns just two defensive backs from last

season, including just one starter in cornerback Adonis Davis, who had a solid freshman season. Also returning is reserve cornerback Jamar Mack.

41 Lettermen Return

ACU returns 44 lettermen from last season – 20 on offense, 20 on defense, and one specialists. The most experienced position groups on the roster are wide receiver (nine returning lettermen) and linebacker (eight returning lettermen). The Wildcats lost the services of 21 lettermen from the 2016 season, including four-year punter Austin Kilcullen and three-year deep snapper Hayden Brodowsky.

Four Returning All-Southland Players

ACU will return four all-Southland Conference selections from 2016, including two first team selections in linebacker Sam Denmark and placekicker Nik Grau. Both Denmark and Grau have been selected to the conference’s 2017 pre-season all-conference team. Two players who were voted honorable mention all-conference – offensive lineman Dakota Laws and linebacker / defensive end Bryson Gates –also return to the Wildcats in 2017. The only player the Wildcats saw honored in 2016 who won’t return in 2017 is Mayfield, who was an honorable mention | all-league selection on the offensive line. He transfered to North Texas in the offseason.

Wildcats Face Tough Home Slate

The five teams who will be in Abilene in 2017 for the inaugural season at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium will certainly test Adam Dorrel’s first team at ACU.

Houston Baptist – the first opponent in the new stadium – joins traditional league powers Stephen F. Austin, McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston State in helping to christen the Wildcats’ new digs. Those five teams were a combined 34-23 in 2016 with the Bearkats posting a 12-1 mark en route to an NCAA Division I FCS quarterfinals appearance. The Bearkats lost to eventual FCS national champion James Madison in the playoffs. Three of ACU’s home opponents posted winning records in 2016 with Sam Houston State finishing at 12-1, followed by Southestern Louisiana at 7-4 and McNeese at 6-5. Stephen F. Austin was 6-5 and Houston Baptist had the best season in its program’s short four-year history with a 4-7 record, including a 27-24 overtime win over ACU in Houston, the Huskies’ first win over the Wildcats. Overall, the Wildcats’ 11 opponents in 2017 were a combined 69-60 in 2016, including a 9-4 record by season-opening opponent New Mexico and a 7-6 record by Sept. 9 foe Colorado State.

ACU Tabbed to Finish 8th in Southland

The ACU Wildcats, who are about to embark on a historic 2017 football season, were picked to finish eighth in the Southland Conference pre-season poll. Sam Houston State – which won league titles in four of the previous six seasons – has been picked by both the coaches’ and the sports information directors to win the league championship in 2017. The Bearkats captured 20 of 22 possible first-place votes and 200 points. Central Arkansas – which finished second in the league last year – has been picked to finish second again in 2017, capturing two first-place votes and 177 total points.

Quick-Hitters • ACU gave up just 20 points to Incarnate Word last Saturday night in a 45-20 victory, marking the first time in five years that the Wildcats have allowed 20 points or less in three straight games. In 2012, the Wildcats beat Texas A&M-Commerce (24-17 on Oct. 27), West Alabama (22-16 in overtime on Nov. 3) and Incarnate Word (24-12 on Nov. 10) to end the season. This season the Wildcats have allowed three points in a 24-3 win over Houston Baptist (Sept. 16), 20 points in a 20-10 loss to Stephen F. Austin (Sept. 23) and 20 points in the 45-20 win over UIW (Sept. 30). • The last time the Wildcats allowed 20 points or less in four straight games was 2009 when they gave up 14, 10, 14 and 14 in the first four games of the season, respectively. They won each of those games: 19-14 over Northwest Missouri State (Aug. 27), 58-10 vs. Fort Lewis (Sept. 5), 20-14 in an overtime thriller vs. Texas A&M-Commerce (Sept. 12), and 33-14 vs. Southeastern Oklahoma State (Sept. 19).
