2015 SEASON OUTLOOK The Eagles’ 2015 season promises to be a memorable one. This is the team’s final year playing in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference and all eyes are fixed on the prize of a conference championship when May rolls around. That honor has eluded them until now with two consecutive third place finishes in 2013 and 2014. But before the university joins the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference in the fall of 2015, the goal is to finish on top. With 12 returning players and 15 new faces on the team, expectations are high.

“The last two years have been somewhat of a roller coaster for us. We achieved a program-best record of 35-18 and dramatic improvement in almost every area of play in 2013. But then last year, we fell to 26-29. What was really disappointing was that 14 of our losses were by just 1 or 2 runs,” coach Caty Reeves said. “The key to our success this year will be consistency. The leadership and experience of seven seniors combined with the fresh energy and talent of our new players should produce solid play in every single game.”

In the Circle A primary reason for the Eagles’ optimism is a deeper pitching staff this year. After relying solely on Jenna Daniel and Selena Lopez to lead from the circle in 2014, three new pitchers — Kim Billie, junior college transfer Makayla Kelly and freshmen Mykelti Shelton will alleviate some of the pressure, according to Reeves.

“This year’s expanded pitching staff not only adds depth, but variety,” Reeves said. “We have power pitchers, spin pitchers, down ball pitchers and up ball pitchers. As soon as a team starts to feel comfortable with one, we can easily throw someone else and give our opponents a completely different look.”

Behind the Plate Battery-mate Katelyn Cook will return as the familiar face behind the plate. Cook earned All-MCAC First Team honors last year as a freshman catcher. She will be joined by two new freshmen — Kylie Stockman and Ashle Bode — and a newcomer to softball, Edith Darris who spent the 2014 season as a member of the OKWU wom-en’s basketball team. Christie Bell, last season’s designated hitter, may also see some time behind the plate.

“Each of our catchers have their own strengths,” Reeves said. “As a unit, they are fully capable of helping each other grow and I expect by the end of the season to see consistent play from each one.”

The Infield The infield will see an abundance of new faces after graduating three all-conference infielders, including the 2014 MCAC Co-Player of the Year in shortstop Miranda Kiser. Leanne Salas as the only returning starter in the infield at first base. “It will be hard to replace the consistency we have had in the infield, but I am excited to see the daily competition between those we brought in to fill those roles.” Reeves believes the infield will grow stronger game by game as the newcomers settle in and learn to play together as a unit.

In the middle, freshmen Heather Jones, Courtney Pritchett, Ashley Brotzman, McKenzie McClanahan and Dako-ta Bottoms will vie for playing time along with returner Ty’Shonna Harris. Over at third, Mariah Shepherd will move back to the dirt from the outfield for the 2015 season. She will be joined by Bode who will split time be-tween catcher and third.

The Outfield Reeves expects the Eagles to have one of, if not the fastest outfields in the conference. This year’s squad includes four returning players in Alex Eichler, Courtney Gililland, Caitlin Day and Candace Perkins who was sidelined last year with a shoulder surgery prior to season. It also includes four freshmen who are looking to come in and immediately make an impact — Hannah Sharum, Desiree Cavazos, Andrea Berumen and Mayan Meza Tovar. Bottoms may also see time in the outfield when she is not in the infield.

“If a ball is in the air, our outfield will track it down,” Reeves said. “The closing speed of these girls is incredible

Page 7: 2015 OKWU Softball Media Guide

and if a ball does get down, they all can make accurate and strong throws from any spot in the grass. The outfield could eas-ily be our strongest defensive tool this year.”

When it comes to offense, the 2015 team has some work to do to top what was accomplished in 2014. As a team last year, OKWU set many single season records in such categories as total home runs (40), hits (412), doubles (81), at bats (1,454), and slugging percentage (.427). But the potential for higher numbers in 2015 is real. Last year’s leading home run hitters are returning and they will be joined by Billie and Kelly who have the potential to knock one out with any swing.

This year’s lineup also features more left-handed hitters, with six players on the roster able to either hit or slap from the left side. Having recruited for more speed as well, Reeves is confident this year’s team will record much more consistent at-bats, more RBIs and a higher on-base percentage.

New JV Program The Eagles also will host a JV team for the first time in the history of the softball program.

“You can only get better by seeing live action and live at-bats. I want my pinch-hitters to already have 20 at bats when they come into a varsity game and this can be accomplished with the addition of a JV team,” Reeves said. “It also encourages competition at practice because everyone knows the girl right next to them is competing for the same spot – it challenges all our players to raise their game.”

2015 Schedule The 2015 season opens Feb. 7 at home against Williams Woods University and continues to be busy as the Eagles play a total of 20 non-conference games in the first month. Following the home opener, OKWU will travel to Ba-cone College on Feb. 10 and to Shawnee, OK to compete in the Oklahoma Baptist University Tournament over Valentine’s Day weekend. The following week brings four opponents to Bartlesville, including NCAA Division II foe Oklahoma Christian University. The Eagles will play Oklahoma Christian (Feb. 17), Ottawa University (Feb. 18),

University of St. Mary (Feb. 20), and Kansas Wesleyan University (Feb. 21). A trip to Southwestern College (Feb. 25) and a home game against Tabor College (Feb. 28) will complete the month.

In March, OKWU will travel to Sterling College (March 3) before opening MCAC play at home against Central Christian College (March 7). The Eagles play at Cen-tral Baptist College (March 10) and then host Haskell Indian Nations University (March 13) before spring break.

During the academic break, the team will travel to Tucson, AZ to complete in the Tucson Invitational against teams from across the country (March 16-17).

OKWU will play in two MCAC Crossover Tournaments in Conway, AR (March 27-28) and Bellevue, NE (April 10-11) to compete against the northern teams of York College, Waldorf College, College of St. Mary and Bellevue University. Mixed in will be the final home conference games against Central Baptist (March 31) and trips

to Haskell Indian Nations University (April 17) and Central Christian College (April 18).

Additional non-conference games include doubleheaders against Evangel University (March 25), Oklahoma City University (April 7) and Bacone College (April 15). OKWU will host Sterling College (April 25) on 2015 Senior Day during which seven seniors will be honored.

Postseason play begins April 30 with the MCAC Tournament. The winner of the four team tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The National Christian Colleges Athletic Association (NCCAA) Regional Tournament will be held May 8-9 in Waxahachie, TX followed by the NCCAA National Tournament May 13-15 in Botetourt, VA.

LADY EAGLES COACHES

CATY REEVES HEAD COACH – THIRD SEASON AT OKWU CALIFORNIA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY, 2010 CAREER RECORD: 61-47 (2 SEASONS) In her third season with the Eagles, head coach Caty Reeves is intent on building the Oklahoma Wesleyan softball program into one known for its tradition of success. After posting a program best record of 35-18 in 2013 and receiving their first invitation to a national tournament, the Eagles suffered a disappointing 26-29 record in 2014. However, a 13-7 conference record paved the way to a third place finish in the Midlands Collegiate

Athletic Conference for the second year in a row and Reeves hopes this year’s team will use that momentum to work harder and strive for excellence at every practice and in every game.

Under Reeves’ leadership, the Eagles have seen significant improvement over the last two years in their offense including overall hits, home runs, batting average and slugging percentage. When it comes to defense, the pitching staff has cut their ERA nearly in half and the total number of strikeouts have more than doubled. Opponents’ batting average has been reduced 33 percent since 2012.

Reeves has coached 10 MCAC All-Conference players including the 2014 Pitcher and Player of the year in Jenna Daniel and Miranda Kiser, respectively. Eight players have received NFCA Scholar Athlete awards, five have earned NCCAA Scholar Athlete awards, and graduating senior Allison Edwards was honored as the 2014 MCAC Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Eagles have maintained a team GPA of over 3.00 each season.

Prior to OKWU, Reeves served as assistant coach at McNeese State University, a NCAA Division 1 member in Lake Charles, LA. She worked under head coach Mike Smith whom she played for at California Baptist University from 2008 to 2011 and was primarily responsible for coaching the catching staff and hitters. In 2012, the Cowgirls finished with a record of 34-21.

During her career as a catcher and designated hitter at California Baptist, Reeves helped the Lancers go 251-22, win four Golden State Athletic Conference titles and make four consecutive trips to the NAIA World Series. CBU won the national championship in 2009, took second place in 2011 and finished third in 2010 and fourth in 2008.

An all-around offensive player, Reeves finished her college career with 125 hits, 105 runs batted in, 19 home runs and 87 walks, a total second on the CBU all-time career records. She also recorded an on-base percentage of .452, fifth on the Lancers’ career records list. Defensively, Reeves was charged with just one error in 471 chances to finish her career with a 0.998 fielding percentage.

An NAIA Scholar Athlete in 2010 and 2011, Reeves also was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American Softball Team (Second Team). She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in math in 2010 and started graduate school during her fourth year of eligibility. She completed her master’s degree in education in June, 2012. Reeves grew up in Corvallis, OR and prepped at Crescent Valley High School, where she also played varsity basketball.

CODY BARHAM ASSISTANT COACH – THIRD SEASON AT OKWU OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY — EXERCISE SCIENCE Entering his third season with the Eagle softball program, Cody Barham continues to serve as assistant softball coach in charge of the pitching and catching staff. He also assists with recruiting.

Over the past two seasons, Barham has helped lower the team’s ERA and opponents batting average significantly each season. The pitching staff’s total strikeouts for the season more than doubled from 133 in 2012 to 350 in 2014. Barham coached the 2014 MCAC Pitcher of the Year Jenna Daniel,

helping to drop her ERA by .50 points and increasing her total strikeouts by over 100.

Barham has four years’ experience in competitive softball coaching with the Oklahoma Blitz and has worked as a pitching coach and high school assistant coach. Barham was a utility player for various competitive travel baseball teams throughout his high school career.

Barham is a graduate of Rejoice Christian High School in Owasso, OK where he participated in basketball, track, and football and was named a three-time All-State athlete. He is currently pursuing his degree in Exercise Sci-ence at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.

LADY EAGLES COACHES

MIRANDA KISER ASSISTANT COACH – FIRST SEASON AT OKWU OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY — EXERCISE SCIENCE

Miranda Kiser is beginning her first season as a member of the Oklahoma Wesleyan University softball coaching staff after completing her eligibility as an athlete for OKWU. Kiser will be in charge of the outfield and will as-sist with hitting.

Kiser finished her college career racking up numerous awards including NFCA All-Region Second Team Infielder honors, NCCAA All-Central Region honors, MCAC First Team All-Conference honors, and the 2014 MCAC

Player of the Year award.

In her two years at Oklahoma Wesleyan, she recorded a career batting average of .379 with 8 home runs, 48 walks and 122 hits. In her senior season alone, she led the team in hits (65), batting average (.363), home runs (7), doubles (12), runs scored (48), slugging percentage (.559), RBIs (34), and on base percentage (.441).

Kiser transferred to OKWU after playing two years for the Lady Norse at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (Miami, OK). The team finished fifth in the NJCAA national tournament her sophomore year.

Kiser is a graduate of Tulsa Union High School where she led her team to the 6A state tournament her senior year. She is currently pursuing a degree in Exercise Science at Oklahoma Wesleyan University and will graduate in May 2015.

2014 SEASON IN REVIEW The Lady Eagles softball team ended the 2014 season with a third place finish in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament and posted a 26-29 season record. The team was 13-7 in conference play.

The conference tournament did not go as planned as the Lady Eagles found themselves in the losers brack-et after falling 2-1 to No. 2-seeded Bellevue on a last inning squeeze bunt. They battled back to beat Col-

lege of St. Mary 5-1, but then fell to the host team Central Baptist on Saturday (May 2). The Eagles mustered just one hit by Allison Edwards in the 2-0 elimination game shutout.

Bellevue went on to win the conference tour-nament and to represent the MCAC in the NAIA National Tournament.

Senior Miranda Kiser blazed the way offensive-ly in the Eagles 2014 campaign by leading the team in nearly every category: hits (65), batting average (.363), home runs (7), doubles (12), runs scored (48), slugging percentage (.559), RBIs (34), and on-base percentage (.441). Jun-ior Christie Bell wasn’t far behind hitting .342 and blasting five home runs.

Senior Macy Wright also hit over .300 with a .304 batting average and stole six bases. Freshmen Alex Eich-ler hit .440 with 11 hits in 25 at bats and scored 10 runs. Junior college transfer Mariah Shepherd just missed the 300 mark hitting .293 while finishing second on the team in home runs with six long balls.

Sophomore pitcher Jenna Daniel pitched 214.1 innings, striking out 244 while maintaining a 2.68 ERA. Her record on the year was 17-17 in 41 appearances. Freshmen Selena Lopez took the remaining games, ending with a 9-12 record in 128 innings pitched and 103 strikeouts.

The team as a whole set many single season records, including total home runs (40), hits (412), doubles (81), at bats (1,454), and slugging percentage (.427). The pitching staff set the record for innings pitched (348.1), strikeouts (350), strikeouts per 7 innings (7.03), oppo-nent batting average (.235), and most notably, ERA (3.66).

The team was well-represented in the all-conference awards. Three were named to All-MCAC First Team including Edwards (OF), Kiser (INF), and Daniel (P). Freshmen Katelyn Cook (C), Wright (INF), and Shepherd (OF) were named to the All-MCAC Second Team, while Bell and junior Leanne Salas earned Honora-ble Mention. Kiser and Daniel each shared a part of the highest conference honors as Kiser was named Co-Player of the Year with Shelbi Hatfield of College of St. Mary and Daniel was award-ed Co-Pitcher of the Year with Jessica Sheldon of Central Baptist College.

The Lady Eagles said goodbye to five seniors: Kiser, Edwards, Wright, Jessica Farris and Brittany Stevenot. As a whole, this group combined for 98 wins, over 65 home runs and over 450 RBIs while reaching the conference tournament all four years and making an inaugural NCCAA National Championship appear-

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is an autono-mous association administering athletic programs for approximately 300 member schools of moderate enrollment and more than 60,000 student athletes.

Its purpose is to promote education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions are diverse, yet they share a com-mon commitment to high standards and the principle that athletics are an integral part of education.

Established in 1940 as the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB), the association ex-panded in 1952 to include other sports and changed its name. The NAIA became the first intercolle-giate sports governing body to provide championship opportunities for both men and women and for students of all races. It currently administers programs related to 13 different sports and 23 national championships.

In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport by intro-ducing the Champions of Character program. This initiative seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

Established in 1968, the NCCAA is dedicated to implementing a positive and purposeful athletic experi-ence in cooperation with member institutions and their student-athletes. Membership has grown to about 100 Christ-centered colleges and universities. The NCCAA hosts 24 national championships and invitationals.
