PSC's great location in trendy Southbank, puts it in the heart of Melbourne’svibrant arts and cultural scene; only 10 minutes walk to the city centre and 5minutes from Flinders Street station. We are within easy walking distance of theNational Gallery of Victoria, Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square and theAustralian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA). The Australian Centre for theMoving Image (ACMI), the Melbourne Recital Centre and the Malthouse Theatreare also close by.

LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE AT PSC

Julie Moss Managing DirectorJulie has over thirty years experience in the education and training sector in Australia. During that time she has frequentlyrepresented the interests of private education and training providers at the state, national and international levels. She was afounding member of the Australian Council for Private Education and Training and served as a Board member and Chair of theNational Board for a number of years. Julie is Chair of the National Education Committee of the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography).

She is passionate about photographic education and brings this passion and experience to her leadership of PSC. She is determined to ensure thatPSC provides a place where students can learn to see the world anew and be nurtured to develop and achieve their full potential.

Jenny Heron Director Communications & Students, PSC Academic Board, Member and PSC Governing Council, Member Jenny has been involved in senior roles in photographic education and the vocational education and training sector for overtwenty years. She has extensive experience working in both community and arts education organisations in Melbourne andrural Victoria. She has taught the contextual units at PSC, exploring the complexities of visual representation and culturaldiversity and undertook a pivotal role in the development and implementation of the PSC curriculum. Jenny has a deep interest in the diversity of human expression through place and time, cultural definitions of femininity and

masculinity and changing gender roles. Her current post graduate research involves popular culture and visual representation in the early modernperiod. Jenny has a profound belief in the importance of the student experience and the transformative power of education.

Dr Robin Williams PSC Academic Board, Chair and PSC Governing Council, Member Dr Williams is a distinguished photographer with more than forty years experience in professional practice. He holdsundergraduate qualifications in scientific and medical photography and Masters and PhD degrees in Medicine. He is currentlya Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography, The Royal Photographic Society, The Biological PhotographicAssociation of America and the Royal Society of Medicine. He has a distinguished record as an academic leader; having been a Professor of Photography for over twenty years, a Head

of Department, Head of School and Dean of the Faculty of Art Design and Communication at RMIT. He was for many years the UNESCO Professor of Communications for the Asia!Pacific region. Robin is unique in having twice been awarded forhis outstanding photographic contribution to the service of medicine.

Dr Michael Coyne PSC Senior Fellow, Adjunct Professor RMIT University, Honorary Lecturer Hong Kong University Michael has worked as a photographer for over 30 years, covering significant events in places as diverse as The Philippines ,Papua New Guinea, Cambodia, Indonesia, Middle East and Africa. His work has featured in numerous prestigious magazines,such as Time, Newsweek and National Geographic. Michael's extensive work has been featured in a number of solo exhibitionsaround the world.He spent eight years in the Middle East documenting the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, he covered the Iranian revolution and

the Iran/Iraq war, for this work he received a number of awards. Michael has had many successful books published and three documentary filmshave been produced about his life and work.Michael is a Senior Fellow at PSC.

PSC Governing Council and Academic BoardThe Governing Council is responsible for PSC's higher education course and delivery including oversight of the PSCAcademic Board. The Council provides a wealth of experience in business, academic expertise, research, photography,education policy and management.

PSC Course Advisory Committee The Advanced Diploma of Photography has been delivered successfully at PSC for many years. In that time, monitoringand evaluation has taken place through continuous and widespread consultation with industry and other stakeholders.Reviews of all units have been undertaken annually, informed by student surveys and teaching sta" feedback. Inaddition, the Course Advisory Committee (CAC) meets regularly to give advice on the industry relevance of the course.This Committee is made up of a range of industry professionals, VET sector representatives, and educators. Suggestedchanges and alterations to the delivery of the course are fed back through the Continuous Improvement Cycle at PSCand actioned as appropriate.

In November PSC held the inaugural graduation for ourBachelor of Photography graduates. The evening was verywell attended and included the PSC Governing Council,Academic Board, teaching sta", members of the arts andphotography communities, graduates their families andfriends. Michael Coyne delivered a wonderful and inspiringkeynote address and graduates provided an insightful andmoving response. A highlight of the evening was thecelebration of the wonderful achievements of thisgraduating class and viewing the many award winningimages featured in the graduation AV.

The PSC Advanced Diploma of Photography graduationwas another fantastic event held in May 2014 at the ACMI,Federation Square. Dr Robin Williams delivered aninspiring and insightful keynote address and studentsprovided humorous and passionate graduate response.Special thanks to our many industry guests and graduationaward sponsors AIPP, ACMP Kayell, Next Byte, Adobe,Exetel, Sally Brownbill, Sun Studios, Irwin & McLaren,Borge’s Imaging, Heartfelt and free radical.

Studio Office staffed by the Studio Supervisor provides apoint of contact for studio bookings and studio equipmentusage. Students have email access to the studio bookingsystem.

DIGITAL CENTRE AND THE PRINT SHOPThere is a large well equipped Digital Imaging Centre thatincludes 2 extensive digital laboratories and a centralprofessional print bureau, The Print Shop staffed by theDigital Production Manager. The centre’s Epson ™ Inkjetprinters are much in!demand and skilled technical staffrun prints every week day, offering students a compre!hensive range of professional paper surfaces. The labs areequipped with Intel Mac computers carrying the latestindustry related applications. All monitors are frequentlycalibrated and labs are equipped with pinup colourcorrected print viewing walls and digital projectionsystems. Off campus students are able to upload theirfiles for printing via a graphical web interface.

RESOURCE HUB This Resource Hub provides students with access to localand worldwide!specialised information resources, throughelectronic journal and book resources, with a particularfocus on photography. The Information and Resource staffare available to provide advice, assistance andinformation. They are located in the Resource Hub (inbuilding 67 City Rd on the first floor above the digitalcentre) and will assist students with questions, catalogueand database information, general collection assistance,research and information literacy as required.

PSC is a progressive career focussed dual sector provideroffering both Degree and Advanced Diploma level courses.Both courses have been developed with the specialisedindustry know how that comes from over 40 years as aninnovative and experienced photographic educator.

The Advanced Diploma of Photography ensures that thetechnical and specialised skill set necessary for professionalpractice is built on from foundation to professional level.

OUR SPECIALISED FACILITIESThe main administrative area is located at level 1 65 City Rd.PSC operates from 9am – 9pm Monday to Thursday and 9am– 5pm Friday to Sunday. The offices of the Communications& Students staff are located on this floor and students haveaccess to the Communication & Students Officers via theiropen door policy, appointments, by email and phone.

PSC has a range of specialised facilities that are acknow!ledged as being among some of the best and mostprofessional of any Australian specialised educationalinstitution. In 2013 PSC began a partnership with Adobewhich provides unprecedented access for our students to theAdobe Creative cloud.

We also have a close relationship with equipmentmanufacturers, importers and professional photographers,so students will experience much of the latest techniques andtechnologies.

STUDIOSAt 65 City Rd on the ground floor are 2 professional studios –Fawkner Rd Studio and City Rd Studio – with double heightceilings, cyclorama, makeup and change rooms, backdrops, arange of lighting and grip gear including soft boxes, striplights, booms, strobes, spots, floods, power packs, honey!combs, barn doors, scrims and reflectors; computer set upsfor tethered shooting and multi!purpose work bays. The

STUDENT LOUNGE Students are supported by the availability of a comfortableand well serviced central Student Lounge area. This areaprovides a casual place to meet and relax informally. Itincorporates an 8 workstation!learning hub giving studentsaccess to the Adobe suite, word documents, image uploadingand submissions. Further print viewing and finishing areasand an extensive student information notice board are alsolocated here. The Teachers/Tutors Office is within closeproximity with the academic consultation hours displayed.

OUR SUPPORTIVE STUDYENVIRONMENT Students learn with some of the best in the industry,professionals who constantly bring their current practice,commitment to excellence and expertise to the classroom.These dedicated teachers are an important factor in the highquality and innovation of the student experience. Togetherwith the teaching staff there is also an established studentsuccess and support framework at PSC.

For study your support contact is the CoordinatorCommunications & Students. Their office is on level 1 of 65City Rd. They are the initial point of contact for all studentsfrom information through to general course discussion,enrolment information, career questions, forming strategiesto assist with financial difficulties, referral to learningsupport, referral to professional counsellor, accommodationinformation, personal issues, handling concerns andgrievance issues, and general support.

PSC STUDENT PORTALThis student portal is an online gateway for our students viathe website and includes: go.PSC – access to general information about facilities, theprint shop and student services, the resource hub and ITsupport.miPlace –the e!learning supportPSC webmail – PSC Student EmailAssessment submissions – submitting assignments.

COURSE DELIVERY MODEAt PSC our courses are interactive and delivered via face toface including interactive workshops and tutorials,demonstrations and practical participation. Studentsexperience the studio model of learning. This means thatstudents can put their creative ideas into practice andthrough the peer/teacher feedback and review process gainfrom experienced guidance, feedback and input. Unlike more

traditional modes of delivery, studio!based learningenables active participation of the student in problemsolving and the practice of creating and making.

TUITION FEES All prospective students and reenrolling should peruse theTuition Fee schedule for the relevant period of enrolment.This is available in all information packages.

EXPENSES OTHER THAN TUITIONBefore commencing your studies you will need to consideryour budget. You should think about the cost of tuitionfees, photographic equipment and course materials – listof expenses other than tuition for your course is availablefrom the Coordinator Communications & Students or visitthe website www.psc.edu.au

Students require their own Digital SLR camera tocommence the Advanced Diploma of Photographycourse, together with 2 x USB external hard drives at least100Gb, brand name portable flash, memory cards, a synccord and Adobe software packages. As students progressthrough the course equipment and material requirementswill vary. Students are required to provide their ownmaterials including but not limited to cost of printing –paper and output for work prints and final prints – mountboard and other materials.

You should at all times be aware of the rapid rate oftechnological change in the photography industry and theimpact this may have on equipment requirements andmaterial. These other expenses are not included in yourtuition fees.

On enrolment students will be required to complete a PSCEnrolment Form for the relevant course, which is theformal enrolment agreement between PSC and thestudent. This agreement includes the Terms andConditions of Enrolment and Refund Policy.

The relevant Student Handbook provides information onVET policies and procedures, these are available from theCoordinator Communications & Students prior to and atenrolment and on the PSC student portal – go.PSC

RPLPSC offers a recognition of prior learning (RPL) process.Further information is available at enrolment from theCoordinator Communications & Students.

ASSESSMENT METHODS These include but are not limited to portfolios,assignments, short answer and multiple choice questions,oral presentations, practical assignments, demonstrations& projects. Students are assessed against the individualunits of competency and learning outcomes.

WHAT UNDERPINS BEING ASTUDENT AT PSC?Students require passion, motivation and a commitment tophotographic practice, image development and imageproduction. As a student you will be expected to discussvisual ideas and concepts, research and participate incritique of your work and that of your peers; take oncreative challenges and be ready to explore and develop asense of self and your own personal aesthetic.

ELIGIBILITY TO GRADUATE In order to graduate and be eligible for the AdvancedDiploma of Photography qualification students are requiredto undertake and successfully complete (Pass) all unitsoffered in each semester and year level of the course. (If youfail a unit – grade F – you must repeat that unit at theapplicable fee rate and obtain a pass grade).**For further details of policies and procedures relating toeligibility refer to the Student Handbook.

COURSE REVIEW AND FEEDBACKIntegral to PSC’s Quality and Review procedure is the coursereview and feedback mechanism. This includes Formal andInformal Student feedback. Formal feedback is collectedusing the Student Evaluations that are completed for eachunit each semester, also via the Grievance Procedure andExit Interviews. Informal feedback is collected from studentsin a number of ways via email, phone conversations andmeetings with any of the following: Tutors, Year LevelCoordinators, Coordinator Communications & Studentsand/or Director Communications & Students.

Subjects and units in both theDegree and Advanced Diploma explore the convergence ofDSLR and video cameras, the proliferation of screens and themovement towards screens becoming primary media forviewing images, points to the importance of this subject.Students build upon their existing level of visual language andwill develop the conceptual understanding and varioustechniques required to produce moving images. Theknowledge acquired through this subject is now becomingessential to the professional photographer.

THE MENTOR PROGRAMPSC offers students a mentor program in final year that linksstudents to contemporary photographers to gather feedback,insights and hands on industry knowledge. Students secure acontemporary photographer whose work they find inspiringand stimulating to act as their industry mentor. Studentsspend time with their mentor, observing and discussing,receiving feedback and gathering “hands on” industryknowledge.

PSC often hosts a range of photographic events, includinginternational photographers, guest speakers many ofwhom are our graduates now forging exciting career pathsand other contemporary Australian photographers andartists. Here’s just a taste of what’s on offer:

Louise Cooper (PSC Graduation Award for Excellence inPhotojournalism, 2010) talked about successfully relocat!ing to Sydney and picking up a variety of editorial andcommercial work there, about working for various NGOs,and about recently landing a full!time job in the Brand andMarketing Department of the University of Sydney.

Darrian Traynor (PSC Graduate 2009) offered insights tothe world of the editorial freelancer in Melbourne, wherehe works regularly for The Media Gang, AFL Photos andGetty Images, specialising in sport, news, people andlifestyle.

Jason Edwards (PSC Graduate 2008) talked about his workas a press photographer, first for the Leader group inMelbourne and later for the Herald Sun, where he is one ofthe top young staff photographers.

All talked passionately about their experiences asphotographers, shared many exciting images and storiesfrom the field, and offered some tips and advice aboutnavigating life after PSC.

The final year students also take part in an industry eveningwhere they hear from photographers as part of the PSCmentor program. On the evening our industry guestsshared their diverse experiences as professionalphotographers, provided insights into the mentor processand reflected on their own mentors and how thoseprofessional relationships assisted in developing theirwork, opportunities and personal practice.

THE BUSINESS OF PHOTOGRAPHY Final year business subjects provide a particular focus on real worldscenarios. Students are required to research and develop their ownintegrated business plan, marketing strategies including social mediaand strong on line presence. Of particular relevance to students is thecurrent business climate pervasive in the creative industries, wherebecause of globalised markets, businesses are forced to combinesound business principles with a strong focus on creativity andflexibility.

ONCE YOU’VE GRADUATEDAn exciting range of career options are available including:• advertising photography• corporate/industrial photography• portraiture and fashion photography• photographic artist and/or gallery/curatorial administrator • photojournalist, editorial work• website fusion content including video• documentary photographer• picture editor• photographic retoucher

In particular, a new range of career options exists in the expandingcontemporary trend of ‘fusion’ between the still image and themoving image, together with the new but expanding platforms ofsocial media.

Many of our graduates have been and are currently employed by localcommunity and metropolitan publications. Some have busy freelancebusinesses supplying editorial, sports and commercial images to arange of clients; others are exhibiting artists with internationalprofiles. Some work in areas such as advertising and corporate/industrial photography, portraiture, wedding and fashionphotography, newspaper/ magazine and publication work,photographic artist and gallery/ museum curatorial work. Othergraduates are based in studios as production managers and somework in digital retouching areas.

EMPLOYMENT REGISTERPSC has an established employmentregister, which matches students to jobs,based on the student’s experience andabilities. This provides students with anopportunity to gain valuable experience inthe profession. Most work assignments areallocated to our recent graduates and finalyear students. We are often the first pointof contact for professional photographersseeking assistants and every month thereare a number of requests for students tophotograph a range of activities. Theseinclude portfolios for dancers, modelsand/or hair and make!up artists, familyportraits, weddings, special occasions,advertising photography, studio manage!ment and studio/ photographer’s assistant.We receive regular requests from galleriesand cafes to exhibit student work and weprovide information on photographyawards, competitions and prizes.

FOSTERING SCHOLARSHIP INPHOTOGRAPHY & THE VISUALARTSFollowing on from PSC’s very successful inaugural one!daysymposium last year that explored ideas surroundingphotographic and literary representations of selfhood, at theBallarat International Foto Biennale, this year PSC is hostinga monthly Image Makers series.

This monthly series is an event that focuses on PSC’screative engagement with the cultural and intellectualdebates and discussions around the visual image and therole of the photographer.

ABOUT THE COURSE

ADVANCED DIPLOMA OFPHOTOGRAPHY COURSEThe Advanced Diploma of Photography (22176VIC) coursewith majors in commercial photography, art photographyor photojournalism, is unique to PSC. Our course leavesbehind older analogue and chemically based technologywhere students learn in a contemporary industry specificdigital environment.

This course reflects the role of practitioners who possessspecialist creative, technical and theoretical skills andknowledge. Initially there is an exploration of output andcraft including advancing your computer/digital skills, whilebuilding the techniques and approaches fundamental tophotographic practice. Genre photography, working to abrief, photographic technique, lighting and studio areexplored and extended in the second and third year whilestudents continue to define their own style and practice.The specialisations commercial, art or photojournalism andextensive mentor program in final year allow students torefine their photography in terms of an industry readyprofessional final folio.

The Advanced Diploma of Photography qualification can beachieved in a minimum of four years of part time study.(Please note that the timetabling of units will vary for eachyear level and stage of the course.)

In our unique first year program you’ll be inspired to useyour camera to explore the world around you andphotograph in a range of genres. Asked to step outside yourcomfort zone, you’ll be nurtured and guided to unleash yourcreativity and give expression to what you see. You’ll soondiscover that your DSLR camera becomes your ‘creativetool’ as you learn to photograph in new and intriguing ways.

FIRST YEAR STAGE 1 CORE UNITS:SEMESTER A USE A CAMERA CREATIVELY &INVESTIGATE PHOTOGRAPHIC GENRES You’ll create, view and discuss images on a weekly basisprogressing through a range of genres, visual awareness,composition, light, colour, camera operations and design.You learn to upload image files, workflow and filemanagement in the Mac environment.

As you produce your photographic folio you’ll learn to see innew and more interesting ways, have fun solving visualproblems and build the technique fundamental tophotographic practice.

APPLY BASIC DESIGN THEORY TO IMAGE MAKING Be introduced to composition, framing, form, shape,dimension and perspective so you can create more dynamicand meaningful photographs.

WORKING WITH LIGHT ON LOCATION –PHOTOJOURNALISM AND THE PHOTO ESSAYDelivered over a weekend On locationHere’s your opportunity to photograph on location anddiscover what it’s like to complete a series of shortassignment briefs involving people and landscape. Yourteacher will be on location to provide guidance andfeedback as you work in an intuitive style to ‘capture themoment!’

SEMESTER B BUILD CREATIVITY IN PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICE &APPLY ADVANCED CAMERA PRACTICEA weekly session that immerses you in the image! Youactively explore how to build the creative process thatunderpins great photography. You’ll be challenged tocreate visual stories in your folio work producingphotographs that have meaning and purpose. You’llcontinue to build your control and photographic technique,learn about creating mood and give greater emphasis to theexploration and perception of light.

PROCESS AND EDIT DIGITAL IMAGESHeld in the PSC digital labs these sessions introduce Adobesoftware for photographers and cover data management,workflow, image editing and printing.

WORKING WITH LIGHT & PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUEDelivered over a weekend Location and studioDiscover and explore the light and shadows in the lanewaysand fabulous spaces of Melbourne! An intensive practicaland ‘hands on’ program where you’ll learn to use a range oflight sources and lighting techniques to create meaning andmood.

SECOND YEAR STAGE 2 CORE UNITSSEMESTER A APPLYING CREATIVITY IN PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICEThe feedback and discussion between students, peers andteachers is continued in these units as you develop andrefine more complex ideas and visual narratives. You'llintegrate a range of creative solutions to articulate yourideas and prominence is given to producing images thatcommunicate in a meaningful way.

APPLY STUDIO LIGHTING TECHNIQUES This is an introduction over two 6 week blocks to basicartificial lighting using tungsten light as the teaching tool.Students must undertake and complete the underpinningaspects of understanding studio, lighting equipment andoperating safely in a studio environment.

POST PRODUCTION/TECHNIQUE UNITSAt this level it is important that you have a solidunderstanding of file management, uploading andworkflow, and that you continue to use and practice thesoftware outside of class time as this will help you tointegrate this skill set as part of your ‘creative toolkit’.

APPLY DIGITAL IMAGING & PRINTING PROCESSESAND USE TONAL CONTROLS Workflow and raw processing are continued together withtonal adjustments, good standard printing and theapplication of image analysis and aesthetic.

SEMESTER B DEVELOP PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC STYLE In second semester your creative practice continues andemphasis is given to developing a personal style. You'll bechallenged to explore the meaning of colour and take onmore creative challenges, visual risks, set goals andcritically review your strengths and weaknesses.

MANAGE COLOUR IN A DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT A combination of lecture/practice that provides the skillsrequired to use relevant software and colour managementtools and settings effectively in order to control colourconsistency and produce quality digital prints.

APPLY STUDIO LIGHTING TECHNIQUES This is the continuation of artificial studio lighting usingtungsten light as the teaching tool including use of a varietyof studio lights – tungsten and multiple flash units, meteringfor exposure and contrast and modifying light for textureand reflection. Also you explore genres of still life andpeople based studio photography, studio design andancillary equipment.

THIRD YEAR STAGE 3 CORE UNITSAt third year level you'll find that your skills in conceptualphotography, camera craft, lighting and technique will befurther expanded in more complex and challenging ways.An exciting aspect of this level is your interface withindustry, in the first semester you plan, implement andproduce your main folio in conjunction with a client, to meeta client brief. And you’ll continue to expand your postproduction processes including retouching, workflow,output and printing.

BEING A STUDENT IN THIRD YEAR To study at this level you require passion, motivation andcommitment as you are entering the final stages of thecourse. You learn to further integrate your creative,technological and technical skills to proactively plan yourphotographic production and output. Folio group feedbackis continued, while increased emphasis is placed onbecoming an active problem solver and independentlearner open to new ideas and challenges, able to set goalsand priorities and critically review your strengths andweaknesses. You'll be required to attend classes, take onnew technical challenges, further develop and explore asense of self. The semester timetable (below) indicates yourtime commitment at the college. You will spend approx10–15 hours per week outside the classroom completingyour photographic folios, projects and applying your postproduction skill set.

At the end of Stage 3 you will be required to submit yourspecialisation choice for Stage 4. Please note thetimetabling of units in final year will vary, meaning there isno Friday day class option for Stage 4 units.

SEMESTER A ESTABLISH PHOTOGRAPHER/CLIENT RELATIONS Students will gain the skills to work in a professionalphotographic environment and freelance to a range ofclientele. You are required to plan, implement and producea photographic project in conjunction with a client. Therewill be a focus on managing a brief from initial planningthrough to implementation and resolution. Some furtherskills in studio and lighting are delivered as a combination ofdemonstrations and practical application in the main foliounit. You explore aspects of large format and more aboutlighting including designing, building and controllingartificial light.

RESEARCH HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARYPHOTOGRAPHIC CULTURE This unit enables you to gain an understanding of thehistorical and contemporary context of photographicpractice and reflect on the debates that inform and drivephotographic culture. You will be expected to do someresearch and form and articulate a point of view on arelevant topic.

APPLY ADVANCED POST PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES AYou'll explore relevant postproduction techniques includingrealistic and creative retouching using Adobe software.There is a print component where you will explore aspectsof digital printing.

SEMESTER B The combination of conceptual, theory, practice, lightingand studio photography continues. There is a focus onpreparing you for your final year choice of specialisation. Anexciting aspect of this semester is exploring more aboutstudio and lighting and undertaking the unit Produce aMoving Image. With the convergence of DSLR and videocameras, the proliferation of screens and the movementtowards screens becoming primary media for viewingimages, there is an important impact on still photography.PSC is addressing these changes and challenges throughthe integration of this contemporary unit at this level.

MAIN PHOTOGRAPHIC FOLIOUSE STUDIO CAMERAS AND LIGHTINGThis unit continues to build on conceptual, communicativevisual skills and incorporates more studio and lighting skills.Further practical studio sessions and demonstrationsbuilding on last semester are delivered in the unit UseStudio Cameras and Lighting.

APPLY ADVANCED POST PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES BThis unit further advances your skills in post productionsoftware and how it applies to quality image production.

PRODUCE A MOVING IMAGE PSC is constantly responsive to the changes and trends ofthe industry. With the convergence of DSLR and videocamera the proliferation of screens and the movementtowards screens becoming a primary media for viewingimages, this unit is an important addition to studentslearning and industry focus at this level.

Students build upon their existing level of visual languageand develop more conceptual understanding andtechniques and skills required to produce a moving imageusing Adobe Premier as the software.

FINAL YEAR: CHOICE OF SPECIALISATION &INDUSTRY FOCUSCOMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY OR ARTPHOTOGRAPHY OR PHOTOJOURNALISM At fourth year you are entering the final stage of the course.At this level you’ll integrate your learning and bringtogether your creative and technical skills to plan yourphotographic production and output. This final stage of thecourse requires drive, energy and commitment. The focusthroughout the year is on refining a professional andindependent work style, with particular emphasis onreplicating the deadline realities of the industry andproducing a final folio of work in this context.

Integral to the transition from student to photographer isthe industry focus of final year. This includes yourspecialisation, the mentor program, industry guests,national and state industry awards and events, businessstudies and the production of a final folio that is alsoassessed by external industry representatives. ACCORDING TO THE CHOICE OF SPECIALISATIONSTUDENTS UNDERTAKE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: MANAGE PROJECTS – COMMERCIAL (SEM A) & APPLY SPECIALISED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICE (SEM B) This specialisation includes students who want to be fashion,advertising, architectural, food, portrait, product, corporate andwedding photographers. The program is designed to producecommercial photographers who are capable of producingtechnically competent, creative and conceptual images thatcommunicate effectively. Students will be required to exercisesignificant judgment in planning and selecting the appropriatephotographic solution for a range of photographic briefs andfolios. Students will be required to produce two photographicfolios that meet professional standards, the final folio presentedto a panel consisting of external industry and academicassessors.

ORMANAGE PROJECTS – PHOTOJOURNALISM (SEM A)& APPLY SPECIALISED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICE (SEM B)This specialisation is for students who love to communicate withpeople, to traverse cultural barriers and continental borders andwho want to harness the power of photography tocommunicate a story. The program enables students tocombine the theory and practice of photojournalism/editorial/social documentary/ newspaper photography.Students will be required to become proficient with digitalcapture and workflows and how these impact on contemporaryphotojournalistic practice. Through assignments and folio work,students will be encouraged to refine an identified and personalphotojournalistic style. Students will be required to produce twophotographic folios that meet professional standards, the finalfolio presented to a panel consisting of external industry andacademic assessors.

ORMANAGE PROJECTS – ART (SEM A) & APPLY SPECIALISED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICE (SEM B)This specialisation requires students to “give voice” to their ownideas and develop an artistic premise for their work. Studentswill develop a critical awareness of the practices of current artphotography and art practice, and be required to integrateresearch based on contemporary social theories and historicalcontexts into their own work. Art Major students will develop acuratorial premise and participate in an end of year exhibitionwhich meets professional standards. Graduates of this majorwill be interested in pursuing contemporary artistic practice,exhibiting, and producing considered photographic art work.Students will be required to produce two photographic foliosthat meet professional standards, the final folio presented to apanel consisting of external industry and academic assessor.Please note: The running of all three majors at this level is dependenton the number of students selecting the particular specialisation. Wemust have an absolute minimum of 10 enrolled students to run any ofthe specialisations.

CORE UNITS APPLY DIGITAL IMAGING FOR INDUSTRY This unit applies the required retouching techniques torefine and appropriately finish images, includingoperating according to current industry workflowpractices.

EMPLOY PROFESSIONAL STUDIO LIGHTINGIn this unit students learn appropriate artificial lightingtechniques and to deconstruct and adapt techniques asa means of refining their style.

WORK WITH A COACH OR MENTOR & ESTABLISH A CAREER DIRECTION WITHIN THEPHOTOGRAPHY INDUSTRY

These units acquaint students with a more in depthview of the photography industry. Students secure acontemporary photographer to act as their industrymentor and immerse themselves in specific industrypractices including industry awards. Professional bodystudent annual membership fee is $75.00 (AIPP).

MANAGE AND PROMOTE A SMALL BUSINESSThis unit focuses on running your own photographybusiness. Students engage with real world scenariosand research and develop their own integrated businessplan and marketing strategies. Integral to this isproducing a professional identity.

SPECIALISATION UNITSAPPLY CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHIC MEDIA (art & commercial students) The advent of the Internet as a popular mediumspawned a global art movement that began to explorethe cultural, social, and aesthetic possibilities of digitaltechnologies. New Media often involves collaboration,the free sharing of ideas and expressions and frequentlyaddresses the political ramifications of technologyaround issues of identity, commercialisation, and thepublic domain. This unit provides an understanding ofpost!analogue photographic concepts and the vastpotential of digital imagery to be used in creative ways.

WRITE FOR PUBLICATION (photojournalism students) The focus of this unit is on writing that complementsphotographs and the narrative in photojournalism.

FINAL YEAR UNDERPINNINGThe final year program delivery includes: lectures,seminar presentations, mentoring, group tutorials,industry visits, guest lectures, demonstrations andworkshops. Tutors at this level act as facilitators andguides, rather than directors of your work. This is animportant aspect, as it is vital in final year to gainconfidence in your own direction and abilities.

The mentor program is integral to this process as youdiscuss your work and receive feedback from otherindustry professionals.

PSC’S BACHELOR OFPHOTOGRAPHYPATHWAY PROGRAMGraduates of the Advanced Diploma of Photographycourse are able to upgrade their qualification to thePSC Bachelor of Photography via the pathwayprogram. In this program they must successfullycomplete an additional 60 credit points of study toqualify for the Bachelor of Photography.

This pathway program is especially tailored to coverthe gaps that exist between graduates havepreviously studied in the Advanced Diploma ofPhotography course and the PSC Bachelor ofPhotography degree.

Graduates will need to complete the Bachelor ofPhotography Pathway Application Form and attendan interview with their current folio of work.
