It is such an honor to represent
our donors and our volleyball
community. Whether I’m
talking with scientists, physicians,
reporters, coaches, players or
parents, I am so proud to say
“volleyball did this”. This year I had
the chance to say that to a room of
respected scientists and reporters,
to accept an award that is truly
meant for you, our supporters.
Receiving the Pharmaceutical
Research and Manufacturers of
America (PhRMA) Community
Champion Research & Hope
Award on behalf of The Side-Out
Foundation was the highlight
of 2015.
Your energy and dedication allow
us to continue funding the Side-
Out Protocol and to give hope
to patients with stage 4 breast
cancer. Your kind messages bring
smiles to patients in the hospital.
Your commitment to community
unites teams and inspires action.
You continue to make a difference.
Thank you for understanding our
mission and for making it your own.
We are ever grateful,
RICK DUNETZExecutive Director

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
2015ANNUAL REPORT
4 SIDE-OUT FOUNDATION | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
In April 2015, George Mason
University opened its new
Institute for Advanced
Biomedical Research. During Side-
Out’s annual company summit in
May, employees visited the new
center, which houses the Center for
Applied Proteomics and Molecular
Medicine (CAPMM), one of the labs
that processes metastatic lesions
for the Side-Out Protocol. The
scientists and physicians were
excited about the new technology
available to them and excited to
implement a new element in the
clinical trial next year.
For the second year in a row, Dr.
Mariaelena Pierobon, a physician-
scientist from the Side-Out
Protocol, presented results from
the study at the San Antonio
Breast Cancer Symposium
(SABCS) in December. She wrote
a wonderful blog post in which
she illuminated the science behind
the Side-Out Protocol and shared
her thoughts on the contributions
the study made to the field of
metastatic breast cancer.
The second trial will be completed
early next year, and the third trial
will likely begin in early summer.
The number of patients will
increase to 100 and the trial sites
to 8-10.
“The athletes raise
money and win
games, which allows
us to perform our
work; each patient
is a “match” we are
competing against
cancer to win. But what have we learned from all of our efforts?
That by using this approach, we can slow the progression of the
disease in approximately 50% of the patients, as we have shown
in the first Side-Out trial we conducted. This translates into
patients being with their families for longer, being present at their
children’s graduations and creating other milestone memories.
Without a doubt, there is still a lot more work to be done, but we
have outstanding teams on the floor, and we will move forward in
this journey one match at a time.”

DIG PINK® RALLYThe theme for the 2015 Dig Pink®
Rally was “The Power of Will”. It
was incorporated into a blog series
sharing various stories of Side-Out
employees and a stage 4 breast
cancer patient, and Dig Pink®
participants were encouraged to
develop their own #WillToWay
challenge, using the hashtag
#WillToWay. Approximately
800 teams raised just over
$1 million, down 10% from last
year’s Dig Pink®
Rally fundraising. Students from 12
schools were named ambassadors
through the Side-Out Ambassador
Program.
In addition to the existing awards
offered to teams that reach certain
fundraising goals, two new awards
were added. Below is a breakout

Many teams utilize social media to
both educate their communities
about breast cancer and publicize
their event. The 2015 Dig Pink®
Rally YouTube playlist represents
schools, both high school and
college, from around the nation
that committed to sharing
Side-Out’s mission and
participated in the Rally.
“I think all of our families have
been touched by cancer in
some way so the motivation to
help was immediate. The Assist
Project was a very rewarding
experience and I am sure our
team will appreciate being able
to ‘assist’ again next season.”

DIG PINK® TOURThe 2015 Dig Pink® Tour took the
concept of the hospital cards
project one step further, and
incorporated fundraising. The
Assist Project asked teams to
challenge their players to each
make 3 cards (“assists”) for
patients in the hospital and raise
$30 for The Side-Out Foundation.
If the teams met that goal, each
player received specially designed
2015 Assist Club t-shirts. In total,
116 teams made 6,264 cards which
were sent to 35 hospitals and
cancer organizations across the
country. $52,681 was raised, a
106% increase in funds from 2014
and the number of participating
teams increased by 190%, from
40 to 116.

Although the funds raised and
cards created for the 2015 Dig
Pink® Tour fell short of Side-
Out’s original goal of 30,000
assists and $300,000, the new
model of having teams combine
hospital cards and fundraising is
promising. The focus will continue
to be on engaging clubs to make a
difference by supporting patients
with well wishes and by raising
money for the Side-Out Protocol.
ROCK THE PINK™Side-Out suspended Rock the
Pink™ for 2015 due to renovation
of Occoquan Regional Park and
to re-evaluate the structure of the
tournament. The grass tournament
will be reinstated in 2016.
PHRMA AWARDIn September, Side-Out was
recognized for its outstanding
achievements in the fight
against breast cancer with
the Pharmaceutical Research
and Manufacturers of America
(PhRMA) Community Champion
Research & Hope Award. Rick
Dunetz accepted the award at a
gala in Washington, D.C. featuring
a keynote address by news
anchor and author Tom Brokaw.
Other winners included cancer
researchers and patient advocates
dedicated to advancing innovative
biopharmaceutical research and
improving patient care.
“We’ve shown that
amazing advances can
come from driven teams.
In 10 short years, we’ve
raised $10 million through
grassroots work with
volleyball players, coaches,
and families. That money
has gone directly to funding
our own clinical trials, called
the Side-Out Protocol,
that treat metastatic
cancer in innovative and
breakthrough ways, based
not on the type of cancer,
but on its molecular
architecture. This gets us
better therapy prediction
and better results and
closer to removing the word
‘terminal’ from our cancer
vernacular.”

THE SIDE-OUT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
The Side-Out Ambassador Program
celebrated 5 years in 2015. Although
it was previously abbreviated “SOAP”,
in 2015 the shortened form switched to
“ambassador program”. The highest
scholarship awarded also increased from
$2,500 to $3,500 and the lowest amount
from $500 to $1,000. In December, Fifteen
students from 10 different states were named
Side-Out ambassadors, and 6 of those
students also earned scholarships. Three were
named the 2015 Side-Out/AVCA National Dig
Pink® Award winners. These 3 winners were
announced at the AVCA Annual Convention
during the AVCA All-America/Players of the

PARTNERSHIPSSide-Out is fortunate to have
many wonderful partners who
believe giving back is an essential
element of good business
practice. In 2015, Side-Out
joined with the following to aid
in its mission:
In June, Side-Out joined with
TeamSnap, making the online
and mobile app its official team
management app. TeamSnap
offered a one-year Ultra Plan
subscription to any team that
raised $1,500 or more for the
Dig Pink® Rally.
In April, Side-Out teamed up with
The Art of Coaching Volleyball to
help further educate coaches and
provide skills and drills that can
be implemented in practice.
Top Dig Pink® fundraising teams
will earn Art of Coaching
Volleyball memberships and Art
of Coaching Volleyball will share
videos and articles to be posted
on Side-Out’s blog.
A full list of partners/sponsors can
be found on the Side-Out website.
SIDE-OUT MARKETPLACEShop Dig Pink® now enters into its
second year! Side-Out launched
new t-shirt designs and improved
the technology of the site so that
it is now mobile-friendly. The
biggest benefit to having its own
marketplace is that Side-Out
can invest 100% of the profits
into cancer research and patient
support rather than giving a
percentage of those profits to
an outside merchandise
management vendor.

LOOKING AHEAD
Side-Out is excited to open its 3rd clinical trial in 2016. This
trial will be the largest in size (of both patients and treatment
locations), and it will incorporate a new technology that allows
patients with bone metastases to take part. Previously, they have
not been eligible because it is challenging to get a molecular profile
for bone metastases. Formal announcements will be made once the
study details are finalized.
Rock the Pink™, Side-Out’s original event, will be re-instated and
organized with the help of special event organizers.
The Side-Out team will continue to focus on the Dig Pink® Rally and
Dig Pink® Tour and the best ways to retain and recruit supporting
schools and clubs. It will also build upon its existing partnerships to
spread the word about its mission, always keeping an eye out
for new partnerships with companies and organizations that have
similar goals.
Further development of the Side-Out website will be an important
element in 2016 as the organization strives to create content that will
make the site an important resource for coaches, players, parents
and patients. Publicity will also remain a major focus to attract more
participants and donors, to increase the number of applicants for the
Side-Out Ambassador Program and to recruit patients for the 3rd trial
of the Side-Out Protocol.
Side-Out looks forward to a successful and productive 2016!
