Warm breezes, green grass and longer days of spring and summer are upon us. What better way to celebrate the spring thaw than to learn a new activity, develop a new hobby or spend your time exploring the skills you already have. If your interest is enjoying the vast natural environment consider a visit to a local park or nature trail. Your children can cool down and beat the heat by enjoying one of our many splash pads. Do your children want to meet new friends? What better way than to visit one of our neighourhood playgrounds.
I encourage you to browse through our Spring & Summer Playbook and embrace a high quality of life by participating and engaging in one of our many activities. So put down the remote, move away from the mouse and fi nd a way to make play and physical activity part of your daily life.
Our dedicated and talented team at RCCS remains committed to providing exceptional customer service and addressing the needs of our community by offering new, motivating and dynamic programs. Your City Council ensures that you are receiving good value
for your money. City staff and our many partner organizations make sure your programs are enjoyable, safe and appealing to a wide variety of interests.
Keep this Playbook handy and discover all of the fun and creative programs and fi rst class facilities in the community we are fortunate to call home. The Playbook is available online at www.qswc.ca.
If you have questions, comments or suggestions for our programming, we want to hear from you.

Here are some tips for you to help your children get the physical activity they need:
s Ask caregivers to use active transportation as much as possible (walk to/from school, stores, etc.).
s Restrict television viewing and video and computer games during the after-school period (36 p.m.).
s Encourage your children to participate in intramural activities after school.
s Become aware of the different options for safe parks and playgrounds in your community.
s Send children to school in clothes that promote physical activity and are appropriate to play in.
s Choose active video gaming to replace sedentary activities as long as your child is actually moving.
s Volunteer to supervise during recess or the lunch hour and assist in coaching after school activities.
s Investigate the availability of programs being offered at YMCA/YWCA, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, parks and recreation departments, etc.
Visit participACTION.com/afterschool to find resources and tips on physical activities for all ages, including safety information.
UIJOL!ACTIVE EVERY DAYCanadian kids can move more especially after school! You heard right thats every day. Kids should participate in vigor-ous-intensity activities and muscle- and bone-strengthening activities at least three days per week.
NPWF!GSPN!!F TO ALets challenge our kids to get more active and see how they measure up. ParticipACTION has provided an activity guide packed with fun ideas for active things to do after school. Your children can do any of these activities on their own or with you, a caregiver or friends. Have your kids track their daily physical activity. At the end of the week, see how many days theyve hit 60 minutes per day. Use the handy chart to assign a weekly mark.
Get ready, set, go! Look for the activity tracker on the back page of the after-school activity guide. Post one for each child in the house and see who can have the most fun getting an A.

Serious Medical Conditions: Those with serious medical con-ditions should be accompanied by an individual knowledgeable of their condition and responsible for their direct supervision.
What to wear? Proper bathing attire means bathing attire only. Sorry, no street clothes, shoes or undergarments. Please wear proper footwear outside of the pool. No bare feet outside of the pool deck or changerooms.
Pool Foulings: All children not toilet trained must wear an article of clothing (with elastic legs) and/or a swim diaper that will keep fecal matter contained in the event of a fouling. No disposable diapers are permitted.
Lane Swimming Etiquette: In order to make lane swimming an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone, please observe the following guidelines.
Swim in an empty lane if there is one available and if you need to share a lane, let the swimmer/swimmers already in the lane know youre getting in by standing on the edge of the pool or by dangling your foot in the pool.Choose a lane with swimmers who are swimming at your pace and always swim in a counter-clockwise circle. To pass someone, tap their feet and when it is safe to do so swim past them. Do not pass if there is a possibility of meeting a swimmer travelling in the opposite direction.Do not speed up if someone tries to pass you and do not swim directly behind the swimmer ahead of you, as this may result in injuries.Do not use another swimmers equipment unless they give you permission to do so.Swim using strokes that are appropriate for the number of swimmers in your lane. (For example, do not use fly if there are other people in your lane.)Be polite. Explain lane swimming etiquette to other swim-mers in a courteous manner and if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask a lifeguard.
Health Department Regulations: These regulations are posted on the entrance to the pool deck and on the pool deck and must be followed.

SWiMMinG leSSonS ASSeSSMenTSNot sure what level to register your child in? Has it been awhile since they last took swimming lessons? Switching from another swimming lesson program? Come to any of our public swims and ask the supervisor to do a swimming lesson assessment. They will ask your child to perform a few swimming skills and let you know exactly which level to put them in! The cost is $2.75.
red CroSS leArn-To-SWiM for SWiMMerS WiTh diSABiliTieSChildren with disabilities, who do not require as much assistance, are encouraged to register in our regular swimming lesson programs. Parents will be asked to fill out a swimmer intake form so our instructors have specific details on the requirements your child may need. We can also partner up your child with a volunteer in their swimming class for some additional assistance. Children integrated into regular swimming lessons will now receive an Adapted Progress Tracking Tool included with their progress card which has content broken down into smaller, more manageable progressions to create a positive learning environment and make each swimmers success more achievable. The steps have been created to progress swimmers with disabilities slowly and at their own rate.
