SPEAKER: Eliot Allen, Principal, Criterion Planners (Portland, Oregon) Urban sustainability rating tools are fundamental instruments for helping achieve green community goals. They provide integrated accounting of the triple bottom lines of community development, raising awareness and improving the quality of outcomes. In recent years, a variety of rating tools have emerged with different capabilities and costs, and understanding their strengths and weaknesses can help practitioners select the most appropriate tool. This program will review a dozen rating systems available in North America for cities, planned and existing neighborhoods, transportation and infrastructure, and landscape and parks. 5:30-7:30pm at Sheet Metal Workers Local 36, 2319 Chouteau, Suite 200 (63103)

38 schools are participating in the 2014-15 Green Schools Quest. At each school, Green Teams are hard at work devising and implementing - with the help of a USGBC-MGC Green Mentor - creative, effective and no or low cost sustainable practices for their school. Join us at the 8th Annual Green Schools Event, taking place as our April program, when we’ll announce the winners and celebrate participants of the 2014-15 Green Schools Quest! Several winning schools will take the stage to tell the fun and inspiring stories of their experiences. Additionally, attendees will learn about the sustainable practices in place at W.W. Keysor Elementary School, host of the event, and find out how they can participate in the 2015-16 Green Schools Quest, as schools or mentors. 5:30-7:30pm at W.W. Keysor Elementary School, 725 North Geyer (63122) FREE for all attendees.

SPEAKER: Joyce Lee, FAIA, LEED Fellow, IndigoJLD, (Grand Rapids, Michigan) How can cities and the buildings within them promote physical activity, health and equity in built environment? Joyce Lee, co-author of the Active Design Guidelines which provides architects and urban design professionals with a manual of strategies for creating healthier buildings, streets, and urban spaces, will discuss policy implications and health. She is applying the lessons learned in the Guidelines, LEED strategies, AIA’s Local Leaders: Healthier Communities Through Design, and ULI’s Building for Wellness: The Business Case, to demonstrate how the successful strategies might be applied to Midwestern cities. 5:30-7:30pm at Alberici, 8800 Page Ave. (63114)

Maplewood, Missouri’s Special Business District has been named the nation’s 1st Green Dining District. The designation comes from the Green Dining Alliance (GDA), a restaurant sustainability certification program of St. Louis Earth Day. The GDA works with restaurants to reduce their environmental impact by completing an on-site audit that evaluates all areas of operations, and by setting personalized goals with each Member. Green practices include reducing, recycling, and composting restaurant waste; operating facilities with efficiency; and sourcing sustainable food, to-go ware, and cleaning supplies. The evening will begin with a brief presentation about GDA certification at Schlafly Bottleworks. Attendees will then enjoy all that this walkable district has to offer via a crawl of the GDA establishments. 5:30-7:30pm at Schlafly Botttleworks, 7260 Southwest Ave. (63143)

June 9 - Green Dining Alliance Crawl

July 14 - Tour of Flance Early Learning Center in Downtown

August 11 - Preparing for ASHRAE 90.1-2010 and LEED v4

September 8 - Upcycling Our Urban Ecosystems

October 13 - Water Energy Nexus

Flance Learning Center opened to students in June 2014, and aims to be an exemplary early learning center, serving children of all incomes and backgrounds, six-weeks to six-years of age in a new, $11.5 million facility. The center’s design team placed heavy emphasis on ensuring that indoor and outdoor spaces were resource-efficient, free of toxins, healthy for students, comfortable for teachers, and cost-effective. In recognition of this emphasis on health and environmental sustainability, Flance Center is registered to become only the 4th LEED for Schools Certified Preschool in the world. Universal Design features are also incorporated to create a convenient experience for staff and students, regardless of physical ability, thereby creating an environment in which special-needs and typical-needs children can thrive side-by-side in the same classrooms. 5:30-7:30pm at Flance Early Learning Center, 1908 O'Fallon St. (63106)

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH: ASHRAE ASHRAE 90.1-2010 and LEED v4 have both expanded from their earlier versions and will have major impacts on buildings in the very near future. This program will examine the new requirements. 5:30-7:30pm at Sheet Metal Workers Local 36, 2319 Chouteau, Suite 200 (63103)

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH: American Society of Landscape Architects-St. Louis Chapter SPEAKER: Heather Venhaus, Principal at Regenerative Environmental Design (Austin, Texas) In a world where 6 million people are added each month, every piece of land matters. However, in our quest for sustainability, we habitually neglect the full potential of built landscapes. Urban areas are increasingly where we come into contact with the natural world – not just in parks and nature preserves, but in more familiar places like residential landscapes, restaurants, campuses, and even parking lots. Too often, these spaces are designed to serve a particular, and often limited, purpose. This presentation will challenge attendees to think broadly about all outdoor spaces and recognize their untapped potential. 5:30-7:30pm at Alberici, 8800 Page Ave. (63114)

This program will examine the interrelationship between water and energy usage by following a drop of water from water provider through end user into waste treatment facility and discussing all the energy that is consumes along the way. 5:30-7:30pm at Alberici, 8800 Page Ave. (63114)

Participants will be introduced to three basic community/shared solar models. Policies and limitations shaping these models, and how they relate to the policy environment in Missouri and Illinois will be discussed as well as community drivers that contribute to creating a community/shared solar project. 3:00-5:00pm at Color Art Integrated Interiors, 1325 N. Warson Rd. (63132)

Participants will walk-away with a good understanding of Retro-Commissioning and how building owners and operators can benefit from these efforts. 3:00-5:00pm, location TBA

SPEAKER: Joyce Lee, FAIA, LEED Fellow, IndigoJLD (Grand Rapids, Michigan) Where are the intersections of health and sustainability? This lecture delves into two LEED pilot credits that are built upon access to physical activity and nutrition. Exercise is medicine, as agreed by medical and health professionals globally. The built environment is a key part of promoting exercise. A new pilot credit called “Design for Active Occupants” will demonstrate ways to expend human energy rather than fossil fuel through active design. Urban Agriculture reduces food miles traveled, increases resiliency and improves nutrition. The “Local Food Production” pilot credit was also launched in 2013. Included in the presentation are three new social equity credits launched since Greenbuild 2014 to augment how green buildings positively impact communities. 8:00-10:00am at Color Art Integrated Interiors, 1325 N. Warson Rd. (63132)

The LEED rating system continuously improves, guiding the market towards more environmentally sustainable strategies and decisions, and responding to continuous advances in technology. This is accomplished in a number of ways through changes to the rating system requirements.

The LEED v4 update included changes to most credits in the system, and has engaged stakeholders from all parts of the green building industry. It will have the biggest impact on CO2 emissions of any rating system developed by USGBC and it takes an unprecedented stand on human health. LEED v4 changes the way project teams think, integrate, plan, execute, and operate their buildings.
