Exciting News for our Northeast members!

Between Friends has partnered up with the Genesis Centre within 1000 Voices and we are currently designing programming for the NE quadrant of Calgary. Programs and recreational activities will be held at the Genesis Centre, a community wellness center. In addition to serving a much more culturally diverse population, programming will also take into account the demographic factors that are unique to the North of McKnight communities; including but not limited to Castleridge, Falconridge, Martindale, Saddleridge and Taradale.

Thank you to the United Way of Calgary and Area, TELUS and the Burns Memorial Fund for the funding to start this programming.

For further information, please email [email protected].

A Between Friends’ Inclusion Leader will be at the facility providing guidance to the Between Friends’ member and offering training on program adaptation to the program instructor and participants, if necessary. I.C.A.N! Anywhere Any community program has the potential to be an I.C.A.N! Program. I.C.A.N! Programs are any recreation or leisure activity in our community in which you might be interested. Any Leisure Centre or Recreation Centre, private dance studio, gym, art studio, or swimming pool can be a facility for an I.C.A.N! experience. Between Friends has partnered with various recreational facilities to include programs such as Hip-Hop and Zumba Dance, Drawing, Badminton, Ballet, Swimming, Hockey and Pottery. Programs run throughout all quadrants of Calgary and surrounding area. Cost: Thanks to Cenovus Energy the only cost involved is the program fee charged by the facility you register with.

I.C.A.N! Registration and Information We want our members to be successful, so if you are thinking of registering in a community program, please call us immediately. This will allow us time to connect with the facility to see what type of support they may need to ensure an inclusive experience. To begin the process contact our Membership Coorbinator, Mark Burzacott at 403 508 0117.

Special thanks to our program partner!

The NEW Friends in MotionWe are sad to announce that we are retiring the Friends in Motion aka Skate a Kid to Camp event that so many of our members, staff, and volunteers have grown to love. The Calgary Olympic Oval no longer rents its ice service and sprint pads out for private events. As there is not another comparable facility in Calgary, we had to make the tough decision to retire a well-known and successful event.

Friends in Motion will live on in a NEW event that we having been talking about for a long time and are very excited to introduce. Between Friends will be hosting our 1st Annual Friends in Motion: Bowl-A-Thon! All funds raised from this event will directly support the quality summer programming we offer for children, youth, and adults with disabilities.

Teams of four will take to the alley and compete against each other for the best bowling score in support of Between Friends. Participants are encouraged to dress in costume, come up with a unique team name, and of course, raise funds for a great cause! There will be a registration fee and also a pledge collecting component to this event.

As with our traditional Friends in Motion, teams are encouraged to set a fundraising goal and challenge their friends, family and colleagues to help them send a kid to camp or an adult on an adventure. Every pin a team knocks down and every dollar raised translates into an unforgettable summer experience for a person with a disability.

Date and location to be announced.

Afternoon Tea Between FriendsWe are pleased to introduce an elegant event to support the work of Between Friends. Our new “Mother Daughter Tea” will be an afternoon you won’t forget. It will have all of the makings of a classic 19th Century Tea along with some current day activities for the entire group.

More details to follow in the new year!

We’re excited to show off our

skills at the new Friends in Motion: Bowl-A-Thon!

Aktion Club -- is looking for adults with disabilities who want more experience volunteering in the community!

Aktion Club is a community-service volunteer group for adults with disabilities. Aktion Club members work to return the benefits, help and caring they have received from the community.

In partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Calgary Northmount, Aktion Club provides opportunities for adults with disabilities to develop initiative and leadership skills, serve their community, integrate into society, and demonstrate the dignity and value of citizens living with disabilities.

Aktion Club activities have included volunteering at the Calgary Drop-In Centre, Father Lacombe Care Centre, the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign, and fundraising for a variety of charitable organizations. Together, the members volunteer 2-3 times per month at different locations doing different tasks. Aktion Club volunteer initiatives take place during leisure hours (weekend and evenings) to replicate the typical volunteering hours of their peers.

Aktion Club members host meetings once per month at the Between Friends office to discuss their upcoming volunteer initiatives and explore new opportunities. These meetings are hosted on Monday evenings from 7:00 - 8:00pm.

Aktion Club would like to start another club location in the N.W. and we need to hear from members living in the north about this new and exciting opportunity.

If you would like more information on Aktion Club or would like to join as a member, please contact Breanne Dunlop at 403-930-3852 or [email protected]

Thank you for supporting our 2014 Fundraising Events!

Between Friends hosted its 21st annual Friends in Motion fundraising event on Saturday, February 15th at the Olympic Oval; raising $95,000 that directly supported Camp Bonaventure and our Adventures programs.

2014 marked the final year for the event, and we’d like to thank everyone who supported Friends in Motion over the years. Without our amazing sponsors and donors, families, friends and colleagues; this event would not have been the success it was. Through skating, walking and fundraising we raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of our camp programs. We hope you will join us for some our new and exciting events we have planned for 2015!

This past July, 132 golfers attended the 2014 Between Friends Charity Classic presented by NEWALTA in support of Between Friends. The event was held at the prestigious Pinebrook Golf & Country Club; and together with the support of our sponsors, donors and golfers we raised $119,000 for people with disabilities to help them connect, grow and belong.

Special thanks to members: Matthew, who came out on course to help with the longest drive contest and to Katana who spoke about Camp Bonaventure during our evening program.

2014 was a special year for Between Friends with our September presentation of An Evening with Alexandre & Frédéric Bilodeau presented by Robert Rivard Barrister & Solicitor. The evening featured two time Olympic Gold Medalist Alexandre Bilodeau and his older brother Frédéric, who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at a young age. Frédéric has been recognized as Alex’s hero and inspiration in both sport and in life.

An impactful evening for all who attended; together we raised $28,500 supporting Camp Bonaventure and our Adventures programs.

On Friday, October 24, Between Friends hosted its 3rd annual Between Bands fundraising event at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino, presented by Pellarin Inc. The event was a huge success with almost 300 guests dancing to the musical stylings of bORDERLINE and the Advo-Cats. Thank you to all of the sponsors and donors that helped us raise $33,000 in support of quality social and recreational programs for people with disabilities.

Thank you for an outstanding 2014 and helping us to raise $275,500!Please help us make 2015 even better!
