2015 Annual Impact Report

Page 2: 2015 YWCA Evanston/North Shore Annual Impact Report

DEAR FRIENDS,

What a year! With your generous and unwavering support, YWCA Evanston/North Shore expanded and deepened its impact in 2015.

Perhaps our biggest step forward was the purchase of a 16-unit apartment building that will be home to a new, long-term housing program for domestic violence survivors and their children. It will complement our 90-day emergency shelter and give women the time they need to secure stable housing, employment and financial stability. This housing program has been our dream for many years, and we are thrilled that, with your support, it will soon be realized.

Over the past year, we talked candidly with many stakeholders about our strengths and challenges, our role in the community, and our mission. We learned a lot, most importantly that you deeply value YWCA’s ongoing commitment to confronting tough issues: social justice, racism, and violence against women.

These conversations have given us a renewed sense of mission, and a greater under-standing of how we can meet the needs of our communities.

As we move into 2016, we are not only deepening and expanding our work, we are intensifying our efforts to tell the story of YWCA – what we do and how we do it.

We are thrilled that the YWCA USA has helped us in this effort by launching “YWCA IS ON A MISSION,” a national campaign that highlights our passionate, purposeful ap-proach to empowering women and eliminating racism. Our work hasn’t changed, but our bold new look helps clarify our social justice roots and our focus on:

• Health and safety for women and girls

• Women’s empowerment and economic advancement

• Racial justice and civil rights

These are exciting times at YWCA Evanston/North Shore. We are indeed on a mission, and we are honored that you are on that mission with us. We couldn’t do it without you.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Karen Singer, President/CEO

YWCA EVANSTON/NORTH SHORE IS ON A MISSION TO ELIMINATE RACISM, EMPOWER WOMEN, STAND UP FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE, HELP FAMILIES, AND STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES.

With your support, we harness the potential of every woman and bring real change to the fight for gender equality and racial justice. These are the building blocks for a world where social justice exists for all.

IT TAKES COURAGE.We tackle big challenges, working toward a more just and equitable society that benefits everyone.

IT TAKES COMPASSION. Impacting lives begins with understanding individual needs. We listen, learn, and respond.

IT TAKES COMMITMENT. YWCA is the oldest and largest multiracial women’s movement in the world. YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s roots stretch back to the 1930s. We always have been – and will continue to be – in the forefront of empowerment and equity.

Page 4: 2015 YWCA Evanston/North Shore Annual Impact Report

IT TAKES COURAGE AND COMMITMENT.We offers survivors of domestic violence multiple pathways to help them out of abusive relationships and rebuild their lives.

We work with young people in our schools to teach the social-emotional skills they need to treat one another with respect to stop bullying and to prevent dating violence.

We offer racially diverse Flying Fish Aquatics, which breaks down cultural and economic barriers to ensure that all children learn the life-saving skill of swimming.

We empower young people to build strong bodies and minds through competitive swim-ming. Through the Flying Fish swim team, girls and boys train and compete together, which fosters mutual respect.

It might look simple if you’re on the outside looking in at a domestic violence situation. But it’s very complicated and difficult for women who are living it. We don’t tell women what to do. We help them make choices.

I feel honored when I see clients recreate their lives.” YWCA domestic violence counselor

TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND SAFETY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS

Thousands of women and families participate in YWCA Evanston/North Shore health and safety programs: aquatics, building healthy relationships programming and domestic violence services. In 2015:

• 741 women and children found safety, shelter, and counseling. 1,706 women received immediate intervention, emotional support and referrals from our 24-hour Domestic Violence Program crisis line.

• 411 women obtained Orders of Protection with help from our YWCA Legal Advocacy team.

• 2,554 young people – elementary through college age – participated in our relation-ship violence prevention program, Building Healthy Relationships.

• 1,296 children enrolled in our Learn-to-Swim program.

• 50 swimmers on our Flying Fish swim team received financial assistance, removing economic barriers to participation.

I had lost all hope of ever having any sort of a life again. Words cannot express how thankful I am to my counselor and the YWCA for giving me my hope

back. My counselorperformed no less

than a miracle.”Susan, a domestic violence survivor

IT TAKES EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP.We offer financial education workshops and topic-specific classes for low- to- moderate income women to give them the tools they need to be financially independent.

We recognize outstanding women leaders in our local communities who are empower-ing women and girls to lead independent, empowered lives.

We increase awareness of social, economic and political issues impacting women and girls both locally and globally.

I had no financial skills because my ex-husband took care of finances during our marriage. I got a credit card with a high interest rate because I didn’t have any credit history. Then I missed some payments and the late fees and high interest rates started to pile up. I lost the hope of ever being able to rent an apartment for myself and my son.”

TO PROMOTE EMPOWERMENT AND ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT FOR WOMEN

We work to address the unique needs of low- to- moderate income women and strive to increase their emotional and economic self-sufficiency. We support women’s economic advancement through the delivery of key programs in financial education. We celebrate women leaders who inspire us to action, and we advocate and educate around the unique issues women face. In 2015:

• 85 percent of women who participated in YWCA’s Basic Money Management course, offered to both our domestic violence shelter clients and to the community, reported increased confidence developing a spending plan and a budget for themselves.

• We established four ongoing community partnerships to deliver our Basic Money Management curriculum and help the most vulnerable women and families in our communities develop financial stability.

• More than 400 people were inspired by our 2015 YWomen Award honorees, showing their support for YWCA Evanston/North Shore and women leaders in our communi-ties who are working for social change.

• 250 people learned how they could take action to end the growing commercial sex trade and stop human trafficking at the annual International Women’s Day commemoration, presented in collaboration with The Woman’s Club of Evanston, Northwestern University Women’s Center, Francis Willard Historical Association, Evanston Women’s History Project, and the League of Women Voters of Evanston.

Through YWCA’S money management class, I learned so much and gained confidence. Now I have a budget, a payment plan for my credit card debt, and a savings plan.”YWCA economic empowerment workshop participant

IT TAKES COMPASSION AND EMPATHY.We keep the topic of racial justice front and center in our communities.

We train institutions and groups to be more equitable and inclusive.

We engage people in honest conversations about race, and we work to improve under-standing and communication.

We build community among those who work for racial justice, raise awareness about racism, and encourage community members to take action for change.

Being in a room with people I wouldn’t normally interact with was very profound. Before the series, I had thoughts and feelings about race that I didn’t know how to talk about. Since participating in the series, it’s like I was taught a new language.”A participant in “Let’s Talk @ Lunch,” which brings people together to talk about racial equity in productive ways

Page 9: 2015 YWCA Evanston/North Shore Annual Impact Report

TO ADVANCERACIAL JUSTICE AND CIVIL RIGHTS

Our racial justice programs increase awareness, build coalitions, and address inequities. We foster opportunities to engage in open dialogue about race, racism and race rela-tions — combating racism at individual, interpersonal and institutional levels through programs and forums. In 2015:

• Over 300 people increased their awareness of racial issues and learned how to talk about them at our monthly “Let’s Talk @ Lunch” and “Reel Talk” programs.

• We expanded Building Equitable Institutions, our process to help institutions and community groups become more equitable and inclusive.

• We continued to increase the diversity of the children we serve through Flying Fish Aquatics. In 2015, 30 percent of participants in our programs were children of color, up from 10 percent in 2005.

• Through “Evanston Swims!” and other outreach efforts, we provided instruction to nearly 500 second graders to begin early water safety and swim lessons.

• More than 10,000 lined the sidewalks in support of racial justice at the April Stand Against Racism, which expanded to include both Evanston and Skokie.

• Over 5,000 participants came together in June for the YWCA Ricky Byrdsong Memo-rial Race Against Hate.

Racial disparity is all around us. It’s in our work-places, our schools, our hospitals, our pools – and

there’s no single solution. It can feel overwhelming, but that doesn’t mean we

can’t take action. Instead, we must take action, in fact many

actions at once.”
