Castello di Fonterutoli has been the heart and soul of the Marchesi
Mazzei story and wine-production for nearly 600 years.
Owned by the family since 1435 the estate still retains its original
form, that of a tranquil country village, surrounded by 650 hecta-
res of wood, vineyards and olive groves. A cluster of houses, the
church of San Miniato and the villa, built at the end of the 1500s,
tell the story of a family deeply rooted in the Tuscan tradition.
Today, after almost six centuries the Marchesi Mazzei continue to
devote themselves to winemaking, with an uncompromising ap-
proach to excellence, an eye towards innovation and an abiding
respect for the land.

Let’s leave Renaissance and Middle Ages for one morning and con-
centrate on the recent history of our city Florence since the last 150
years left changes and scars, from the Piazza della Repubblica
to the Crucifix of Cimabue. Marina will walk you through the city
show you the signs of the sanitizing projects of the end of the 19th
century, the mines of the Germans, the 1966 flood and the 1993 car
bomb. The tour includes a visit to Santa Croce Church. For groups
of 10 people and during weekends Marina would like to end the
tour at the Rodolfo Siviero museum.
Rodolfo Siviero took the role of a special agent right after the war
to retrace all stolen art by the Nazi’s. He left his house and col-
lections to the city as a memorial.

The day will begin with a Private Visit of the Giardini Torrigiani
The Torrigiani garden with nearly seventeen acres hidden in the
heart of Florence, is the largest privately owned garden in Europe
situated within city boundaries. Renowned in the sixteenth cen-
tury as a botanical garden it had a revival in the early nineteenth
century when the Marquis Pietro Torrigiani inherited the property
and started acquiring the surrounding land. This he transformed
into a ‘romantic park’ in the english style, adhering to the fashion
of the time, which covered an area of 25 acres.
The architect Luigi de Cambray Digny, who had recently renova-
ted the Oricellari gardens to much acclaim was commissioned to
re-design the garden.This he accomplished cleverly combining na-
tural elements with artificially made landscaping and managing to
include many symbols of an esoteric nature. Members are invited
to explore these beautiful private gardens guided by the Marchese
Torrigiani Malaspina.
