This year, Saint James School is celebrating its remarkable 175-year history.

The School’s mission is “to prepare young men and women for

academic success in college, and to challenge and inspire them to be

leaders for good in the world.” Our students are pushed to cultivate

their strengths and improve their skills in multiple disciplines—but most

of all to be better people: resilient and self-confident, caring and

helpful. This was as true in 1842 as it is today.

Saint James has been able to carry out this mission for 175 years due in large

part to the philanthropic tradition of giving in our community. Because of

you, our generous donors, we look forward to the next 175 years.

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends of the School,

As Saint James School celebrates its 175th year there is much to be thankful for. There has been one constant

throughout Saint James School’s 175-year history and that is the support of alumni, parents, friends,

and staff who have seen to it that the School has had the resources to not only survive such

catastrophic events such as Civil War, World Wars, and depressions, but to prosper even when

times were good.

To understand the value of one’s investment in Saint James, whether this is measured

in time, financial contribution, or general good will, all one has to do is attend a

graduation ceremony in early June and witness the students themselves on their last

school day. There can be no doubt of the positive contribution that Saint James has had

on these students as they head out into the world to help make it a better place than they

found it.

As a Saint James alumnus and parent I can think of no other institution that is more worthy of

our support. With the School’s small size every contribution has a large impact and is easily measured.

It is through generous giving that Saint James School has been a beacon of light the past 175 years. Let us all give

thanks for everyone and everything that has made this possible and continue the tradition onward for the next 175

years.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Saint James School,

As you know, this year Saint James is celebrating the 175th anniversary of our founding,

which makes us mindful of all those faithful teachers and benefactors who have served

on this campus and built this school through peace and war, prosperity and adversity

since 1842.

I think of our first rector, the Revd. Dr. John Barrett Kerfoot, who founded Saint

James and led the college with such courage and conviction as the Civil War raged

around us, of Henry Onderdonk who restored the school after the Civil War, and his

son Adrian who kept us alive after Claggett burnt to the ground in 1926 and through

the Depression.

I think of our campus during the first and second world wars, the Korean and Vietnam

Wars, of our young alumni going forth from Saint James to fight with only the skills,

resilience, and courage that they had learned here in class, in the dorm, and with

their friends on the playing fields, of Donn Porter ‘49, who won the Congressional Medal of Honor, which his

mother gave to the school, and Watty Wheelwright ’49 who won the Distinguished Flying Cross in the Korean

War, and Tim Shryock ’38, who won the Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II.

I think of two presidents of the board whom I was so privileged to serve: Admiral James L. Holloway III ‘39,

who fought in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and was highly decorated for his courage

and leadership in all three, and of Lud Sells ’60 who fought in the jungles of Vietnam and refused to leave his

men until he was relieved by another officer, keeping himself in danger for the sake of those he served. In both

cases, the place they credit for their faith and their survival is Saint James, which is why they are so grateful and

so devoted to this school.

And you have your reasons to love Saint James: the lessons learned, the friendships made, the challenges

overcome, the triumphs achieved, the tears shed, and the laughter shared - that journey into adulthood which is

so well nurtured and so well begun here.
