Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Diocese of Providence:

The audit for the financial position of the Central Administration Funds and Diocesan Cemetery Operations within the Diocese of Providence was recently completed by our independent auditors, Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C. for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016. The Diocesan Finance Council has carefully reviewed and accepted their findings. Those who wish to review the complete audited 2016 Financial Report in full detail may do so on our diocesan website (http://www.dioceseofprovidence.org).

Enclosed is the customary “User-Friendly” or summarized format of the 2016 Financial Report of the Central and Ministerial services of the Diocese of Providence. The “User-Friendly” report reflects those areas of ministerial activity supported by the General Fund or the Catholic Charity Appeal. The performance has been relatively stable in both areas.

The Parish weekly budget collections are up 3.5% totaling $42 million, thus increasing the Parish Assessment to the Diocesan General Fund operations by approximately $120,000 to $3,286,261 at June 30, 2016. We had a record year with the Catholic Charity Appeal reaching an all-time high of $8 million in pledges and donations. We also reversed a downward trend in the annual number of donors to the Appeal. In addition, we experienced a flat return on our overall investment portfolio for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016. Our first three months into the new fiscal year has produced a positive return of 3.6%, and we are anticipating a very good second quarter ending December 31, 2016.

Even with modest increases in lay wages and other employee benefits we were able to keep expenditures level in comparison to the prior year. Operational expenses for both the General and Catholic Charity Funds as of June 30, 2016 were $13,213,466 compared to $12,774,104 as of June 30, 2015 an increase of $439,362 or 3.4%. The progress over the past several years due to internal reorganization and the dedicated work of our employees to provide more services with less resources, has been encouraging.

As we move forward the 2016/2017 fiscal year holds much promise for us. The economy seems headed in the right direction and our investment portfolio is performing well year to date. There is an innovative marketing program for the 2017 Catholic Charity Appeal and we are hopeful for another productive year. The Diocese of Providence will continue to do our best to be careful stewards of the Diocesan resources by relying on the providence of God, on the guidance and support we get from our many advisory committees, on the leadership of our Pastors, and on the outstanding generosity of the lay faithful.

Thank you for your continued and generous support during the past year and may God bless you and your families.

Sincerely yours,

Thomas J. TobinBishop of Providence

Parishes, schools and agencies throughout the diocese benefit from the expertise and services provided by the administrative offices and programs of the diocese.

The following is a summary and detailed list of the secretariats and the individual offices and programs which comprise each secretariat. Note: Certain reclassifications have been made to prior year amounts to conform to the current year presentation.

Since 1925 the Diocese of Providence, through the annual Catholic Charity Appeal, has generated resources to support its many agencies and programs which assist the social, spiritual and educational needs of thousands of Rhode Islanders. The Diocese of Providence is the second largest provider of human services in Rhode Island exceeded only by our state government. Funds raised from the annual Catholic Charity Appeal are used solely to support the agencies and programs designated to receive them.

Emmanuel Homeless Shelter

Since 2010, the diocese has provided homeless men a safe place to come to seek refuge and assistance in finding housing, employment, and if needed, substance abuse counseling. Support from donors to the CCA as well as the generosity from parishes, individuals, and other entities have donated food and volunteered their time and financial gifts. In 2016, Emmanuel House provided shelter for 285 men who otherwise would be out in the cold.
