Dear Friends of the Foundation:

The Amarillo College Foundation and its generous donors continue to ensure our students find every opportunity to succeed. Because of this impressive support, Amarillo College’s No Excuses Success Model established AC and our community as a national leader this past year.

With our innovative approach to supporting and educating students, AC was asked to testify before the US Senate HELP Committee at the invitation of committee chairs, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Senator Patty Murray of Washington. I was honored to represent our faculty and staff by introducing Amarillo, AC, and our amazing students to our nations’ leaders.

The college was awarded the prestigious Bellwether Award for the Advocacy and Resource Center’s support of our students living in the warzone of poverty. This recognition enabled us to travel the country sharing the story of Amarillo and its college.

Our faculty owned the spotlight as well. Amarillo College faculty, Edie Carter, Dean of Academic Success and professor of Math, was named the National Faculty Innovator of the Year by the American Association for Community Colleges – the highest honor a faculty can receive. Dan Porter, professor of biology, received national recognition when the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) named him the 2017 recipient of its Two-Year College Teaching Award.

Our students are finding success and our college is changing the landscape of the community. Our three year graduation rates moved from 19% in 2014 to 45% in 2017 (the state average is only 14% for community colleges.) We are innovatively redesigning higher education, and it is working. For our community, success is … Amarillo College.

Lifetime PhilanthropistsThe Amarillo College Board of Regents in 1961 believed a foundation would benefit the college, its students, faculty and programs. On January 23, 1962, Regents adopted the Articles of Incorporation of the Amarillo College Foundation, Inc. President A. B. Martin announced the first gift of $2,500 from Scott Lumber Company to be used as a faculty emergency loan fund. Those who have made cumulative gifts of $2,500 or more become Lifetime philanthropists, one of the highest forms of recognition Amarillo College and The Amarillo College Foundation can bestow. Donors are recognized in this report for cumulative gifts. We acknowledge our donors both living and deceased.

Student Spotlight – Stevi Breshears

Empowered by scholarships courtesy of the AC Foundation, Stevi Breshears has not only persevered at Amarillo College, she has positively thrived.

A general studies major who will graduate this May, Stevi was admittedly something of a spectator when she first enrolled at AC. “I was not very involved at first,” she said. “I would go to class and then just go home or to work.”

But Stevi has long since made the transition from bystander to leader – and even from homebody to international scholar.

“The scholarship opportunities I’ve been given here at Amarillo College have definitely changed my life,” the graduate of Tascosa High School said.

“I come from single-parent household, so money has always been tight,” she said. “Without financial aid and scholarships, I would not be at AC at all.”

Stevi has been the recipient of National Honor Society and Regents Circle scholarships, as well as a Don Powell Honors Scholarship and an Honors Program Scholarship. The dividends she has reaped are many.

Encouraged by the Foundation’s support, Stevi emerged from her shell. She decided to dabble in the study of mass communications and swiftly ascended to editorship of AC’s student newspaper, the Ranger.

She also applied belatedly for inclusion in AC’s Presidential Scholars program. Not only was the former high school scholar accepted, she took part earlier this year in the Scholars’ service-learning sojourn to the Dominican Republic.

“It was an incredible experience,” she said of the Scholars’ week-long stay in a rural fishing town, where they helped teach English at an elementary school. “It was not a touristy trip at all. We saw the beauty of the country, yes, but it was really a chance to get to know the people and experience their culture – so rewarding.”

Stevi is no stranger to hard work: she puts in 20-plus hours a week at Southerland’s Lumber Company, and she commits plenty of additional hours to her role as editor of the Ranger, yet she continues to excel academically at AC.

Student Spotlight – Nathaniel Solis

Amarillo College freshman Nathaniel Solis is no stranger to acts of compassion. He has long given freely of his time and energy in support of Meals on Wheels, Faith City Mission, and his church’s annual coat drive. He says his charitable involvement has helped him to doubly appreciate his own good fortune. Nathaniel, a 2017 graduate of Caprock High School, is an ACE Scholar and the recipient of three scholarships through the AC Foundation.

“Seeing people’s faces light up when you give them a coat or serve them a meal has been very rewarding for me,” Nathaniel said. “It’s helped me to understand how blessed I truly am myself to receive so much financial support from Amarillo College.

“I honestly don’t know how I’d be able to make ends meet without the great generosity of so many people at the College. I probably wouldn’t be at AC without this assistance, and I do not take my scholarships lightly.”

Nathaniel is a first-generation college student who this school year received $1,500 from the Mack and Arla Forrester Fund, and $500 apiece from the Badger Fund and the Regents Excellence Fund.

Even though he attends classes full time and works about 30 hours a week at Walmart, Nathaniel, a business major, managed to produce a Dean’s List worthy 4.0 grade point average last fall.

Nathaniel is on track to graduate from AC in 2019 and plans to transfer to West Texas A&M University and pursue a degree, most probably in accounting.

“Since the time I was a child, I have always had a love for learning and going to school,” he said. “I have always wanted to get a college degree because I know it will pave the way for me to be able to do what I love for the rest of my life, which is serving others.

“I am so grateful to the Amarillo College Foundation for helping me make my dreams come true.”

The Foundation Finance & Investment Committee oversees a diversified portfolio of high quality fixed income and equity assets. Working with an investment consultant and diversified fund managers, the Foundation had a realized total investment return in 2016-2017 of $1,439,138 and an unrealized gain of $3,075,193 for a total investment return of $4,514,331.

Dr. Bud Joyner became the 10th president of Amarillo College in 1992 and served in that capacity until 1999. He returned as interim president in 2002-2003.

Amarillo College grew and prospered under Joyner’s leadership, and the Bud Joyner Fellows Program originated as a means of honoring his past service. At the same time, it will enhance student-assistance funding at the College.
