Greetings Henry County Schools student:

Preparing to enter the world of work can be a scary venture. There are so many careers from which tochoose and additional careers that haven’t been invented yet. How do you decide? How do you prepare?

This booklet provides a glimpse into the many areas of training offered by Henry County Schools toprepare you for your future career. The training you receive now can be a springboard to your post-secondary training options. With careful planning, you could graduate from high school with industrycredentials that groom you to be more competitive in today’s global marketplace.

Each page contains information on the many career clusters and pathway concentrations and guides youto which Henry County schools offer each course of study. Carefully read these pages and consider yourstrengths and weaknesses, your interests and passions, and above all your vision for your future.Parents, counselors, and CTAE teachers are always available to answer questions and provide directionon your career journey.

The Career, Technical and Agricultural Education(CTAE) Division of the Georgia Department of Educationis responsible for the career and leadershipdevelopment of students in middle and high schoolsacross the state. By using a co-curricular format, theCTAE department works with the Career, TechnicalStudent Organizations (CTSO) to enrich the curriculumin the CTAE Pathways. Hands-on, real world learningexperiences offered through participation in CTSOsgreatly enhance the rigorous curriculum provided by thetraditional classroom experience.

Henry County’s CTSOs strive to help students lay thefoundation and build the skills necessary for chapters toachieve success. Each CTSO is full of interesting andexciting programs in which to get involved at the local,state, and national levels. Fall, State, and NationalLeadership Conferences provide opportunities forstudents to learn leadership skills, network with otherstudents, and participate and excel in knowledge andskill performances.

Our CTSOs also strongly encourage and support

community service activities which provide opportunitiesfor their members to be involved in community initiatives.

In addition, each CTSO celebrates a National CTSOWeek with various activities designed to honormembers, teachers and administrators. Students love toget involved during this week of activities, field trips,socials, contests, breakfasts, and guest speakers.

CTSOs provide an excellent way for all students in CTAEcourses to expand the knowledge and skills learned inclass as well as develop leadership and communityawareness skills needed for their future success in theworkplace.

Career PathwaysCareer pathways are state-approved career enhancement programs defined as a coherent, articulatedsequence of rigorous academic and career related courses usually commencing in the ninth grade andleading to an associate degree, an industry-recognized certificate or licensure, and/or a baccalaureatedegree and beyond.

Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) provides all Georgia students with the opportunityto select at least three sequenced electives in a career pathway, along with recommended academiccourse work, to prepare them to continue their education at any level or to enter the world of work.

Selection of a pathway will be based on self-awareness and the investigation of occupations plus relatededucational levels aligned with the pathway. Most high-demand, high-skilled, high-wage occupations inall concentrations still do require education beyond high school. Implementation of career pathways is acollaborative effort between the local system, the Technical College System of Georgia and theUniversity System of Georgia.

Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Career ClusterAgriculture Education (Ag Ed) nurtures leaders in every fieldimaginable. While some Ag Ed students come from farmfamilies, the vast majority do not. Over 98% of pathwaycompleters go on to work or study in a nonfarm, agriculture-

related career. Thereare three interrelatedcomponents to theprogram: classroomand laboratoryexperiences, theSupervised AgriculturalExperience Program(SAEP), and FFA. The AgEd program combinesagricultural technical skillswith rigorous coursework,leadership training, anexploration of the ethical andphilosophical issues related togenetic engineering, the

impact of agriculture on theenvironment, and other currentagricultural topics.

The opportunities for studentswith solid Ag Ed skills arebooming in fields such asagriscience, animal science,biotechnology, turf

management, landscaping, foodscience, forestry, environmental

science, agriculturalengineering, agribusinessmanagement, and veterinarymedicine.

Emphasis in ArchitecturalDrawing and Design is placedon house designs, floor plans,roof designs, elevations (interior and exterior), schedules, andfoundations. Students in advanced courses will learn to illustratemore complex objects using the Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD)system and develop skills in dimensioning, tolerancing, pictorials,sections, auxiliary views, and intersection and developments.

Students in Construction pathways will gainknowledge in all areas of safety, the State

of Georgia Building Codes, and gainskills needed for carpentry, electrical,masonry, and plumbing.

Welding students will learn basicknowledge and safe operating

skills needed to demonstrateproper use of equipment in

oxyfuel and shielded metalarc welding according tothe American WeldingSociety and the NationalCenter for ConstructionEducation and ResearchCenter.

Arts, Audio-Video Technology andCommunications Career ClusterThe Arts, Audio-VideoTechnology & Communicationcareer cluster allows studentsto work with their hands andcollaborate on fun, interactiveprojects. Using state of the arttechnology, students in theAudio-Video Technology andFilm pathway will completeprojects in designing, writing,producing, editing, andfilming. Students in GraphicProduction or Graphic Designpathways will be involved inthe technologies of printing,publishing, packaging, andelectronic imaging; developing skills in typography, visual arts,and page layout. All students will develop business and effective

communication skills as they learn tointeract with clients and customers.

Students entering the fast-paced industry ofbroadcasting will be on thecutting edge of productionand programming, setproduction, lighting,

recording and editing. Manywill meet with live clients and

produce professional qualityprograms and videos to

meet the needs of businessand industry.

Graphics students will meet with real clients to plan, develop,and implement designs for advertising, product promotion,and electronic communication. The professional equipment inthe lab will provide students the opportunity to follow a projectfrom inception to final print. Many items from the students inthis pathway will be displayed and promoted through an on-siteschool store.

The Education Programconcentration in Career,Technical, and AgriculturalEducation is designed forstudents who are interestedin pursuing a career in theeducation field.

The Early ChildhoodEducation pathway focuseson teaching children agesbirth to seven years.Students will addresspreschool care andeducation and developmentissues that include guiding

the physical, cognitive, creative, social, emotional, and moraldevelopment of young children. This course of study includesplanning and guiding developmentally appropriate practices forworking with young children through the operation of an on-sitepreschool program, based on guidance from Bright from the Start.

Teaching as a Profession focuses on teaching children in grades Kthrough 12. Students will study, apply, and

Energy Career ClusterCourses in the Energy Cluster prepare students for careers inplanning, managing, and providing support and technicalservices related to the generation, transmission and distributionof various types of energy along with the engineering design,construction, maintenance and repair of these systems.

Students in the Energy and Power pathway will learn the keyconcepts and methods of energy systems, applications, andefficiency. They will also explore how energy is converted intouseful services and the role of increased efficiency in providingthose services with less energy.

This career cluster hasbeen implemented in thestate of Georgia as a directresult of the demand forqualified, skilled, trainedemployees to work in therapidly changing energyindustry. Government and Public AdministrationCareer ClusterStudents in any of the CTAE program concentrations who want toenhance their leadership skills, improve their physical and mentalfitness, and be part of an elite team can choose to participate inJunior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC).

Henry County Schools offer both Navy and Air Force JROTCprograms. JROTC cadets are not obligated to commit to militaryservice. However, many cadets find that they enjoy militarydiscipline and structure because it brings out their best and allowsthem to excel. Some win appointments to one of the militaryacademies, and those who enlist can enter military serviceat a higher rank and pay grade.

JROTC training improves the ability to study, taketests, set goals, and better focus on academics.These are the tools every student needs to improvegrades and to better prepare to attend college.

Many programs have Color Guard, Orienteerings,Academic Teams, and Drill teams. Others offer anAir Rifle team – which is a Georgia High SchoolAssociation varsity athletic sport.

Manufacturing Career ClusterAdvanced Manufacturing is a leading Georgia industry, especiallyin Henry County. It involves planning, managing and performingthe processing of materials into intermediate or final products, andrelated professional and technical support activities such asproduction planning and control, maintenance, andmanufacturing/process engineering.

Work-Based LearningWork-Based Learning (WBL) represents the pinnacle of theCareer-Related Education experience. To qualify for a WBLplacement, a student must be in grades 11 or 12 and be atleast 16 years old.

Students must also have a defined pathway in order toparticipate in the Work-Based component of Career-RelatedEducation. This is especially important for successfulapplication of a student’s pathway because each job placementis directly related to the curriculum of the classes completed or inwhich the student is currently enrolled. Work-Based Learning isnot simply work release, but an extension of the high schoolclassroom learning in a non-traditional laboratory setting. It is anopportunity to truly apply, in real world settings, what the studenthas learned through a related program of study.

There are several opportunities for students to participate in Work-Based Learning. These opportunities include Cooperative Education,Internship, Youth Apprenticeship, and Clinical Experiences.

Students from all Henry County high schools mayparticipate in this innovative program which is located onthe campus of Henry County High School. Students willmaintain enrollment at their home school whileparticipating in Academy for Advanced Studies programson a “shared-time basis”. The state-of-the-art career/techprograms of study offered at the Academy are notoffered through the home high schools. Henry CountySchools will provide transportation to and from each ofthe home high schools!

What does this mean for me? It means you will takesome of your classes at the Academy and some of yourclasses at your home school. You can also participate inall extra-curricular activities (athletics, band, drama,clubs, etc.) at your home high school.

How is the Academy for Advanced Studiesdifferent than other high schools? Partnershipswith Clayton State University, Gordon State College,and Southern Crescent Technical College haveestablished the Academy as a satellite campus sostudents can earn high school credit as well ascollege credit upon successful completion of eachcourse. Participation in these programs requiresapplication and acceptance into the post-secondaryinstitution.

How do I sign up? There is no application forparticipation. Contact your school counselor for openhouse and registration schedule.

Move On When ReadyWhat is Move on When Ready?

Move On When Ready combines the Accel, HOPE Grant, Joint Enrollment,and Move On When Ready (MOWR) efforts of the past. It simplifies the

programs and expands the opportunities for students in grades 9 – 12 toreceive college credit prior to high school graduation.

How does Move on When Ready Work?

In order to participate in MOWR, students must apply and be acceptedto the post-secondary institution they wish to attend. Students whoattend MOWR courses through USG and TCSG will not pay any tuition

or mandatory fees, and books will be provided. Course-related fees,such as lab fees or supplies, may be the responsibility of the student.

Courses taken through MOWR will not impact HOPE Eligibility or theamount of HOPE money a student receives. Students enrolled in at least 12

semester hours or 15 quarter hours are considered full time MOWR students.Satisfactory academic progress is required to continue participation in MOWR.

Who is eligible to participate?

MOWR students must be enrolled in an eligible high school. Georgia defines eligible high schools to include: Georgiapublic and private high schools and home study programs within the State of Georgia operated in accordance withO.C.G.A. 20-2-690(c). Students must apply and be accepted to the post-secondary institution they wish to attend.Students must complete an annual Participation Agreement with their local high school.

What about transportation?

Through agreements with Southern Crescent Technical College, Gordon StateCollege, and Clayton State University, students can enroll in MOWR classes locatedon the Academy for Advanced Studies campus with transportation provided twicedaily to and from the home high schools. Transportation to other colleges or the maincampuses of the colleges listed above is the responsibility of the student.

How is credit awarded?

Students will receive both secondary and postsecondary credit whether ornot the course is taught during the regular high school day. Studentsmay select only the postsecondary credit hour courses listed in theMOWR Course Directory located on www.gatracs.org.

How do I get started?

Students interested in participating in MOWR should contacttheir high school counselor in January of each year, as MOWRand the post-secondary institutions have application deadlinesbeginning in March.
