Jerry started the volley ball tournament as

a fun and competitive activity for those who

did not participate in golf. The tournament

quickly took off and became an annual

event. So much so that the golf tournament

was moved to the Fall Institute. When Jerry

passed away in 2007, the SCHFMA Board of

Directors voted to name the annual

tournament in his memory.

This year, the tournament is sponsored by Medical Data

Systems (MDS), Med AR/x (PMAB), App Rev, and DECO. The

Awards reception will be Thursday evening and is sponsored by

Avadyne. Thank you to our sponsors for making this event

Using Data Analytics to Succeed in Bundled Payments

Andy Williams & Eric Rogers, BKD

Will McLeod & Emily Adams, McLeod Health

Wednesday, 1:00 pm Palisades I*

Rev Cycle/Finance Track Sponsored by Xtend Healthcare

Medicare is shifting FFS reimbursement to advanced payment

models as evidenced by the mandatory bundled payment for hip

and knee surgeries. The ability to accurately price risk across

an episode of care will challenge hospitals to align value-

oriented providers and deliver the most appropriate care with

an eye towards activity-based cost accounting.

By attending this session, you will learn:

1. How Medicare bundled payments transfer risk to providers

by holding hospitals financially accountable for an entire

episode of care.

2. The importance of leveraging claims analytics for process

improvement methods and performance evaluation against

fixed target prices.

3. The value of collaborative relationships with physicians

and post-acute care providers.

Meeting Medical Necessity for All Payers Using ICD-10

Linda Corley, Xtend Healthcare

Wednesday, 2:00 pm Palisades G, H*

Rev Cycle/Finance Track Sponsored by Xtend Healthcare

This session will discuss the varied payer requirements for

meeting medical necessity with ICD-10-CM diagnoses and PCS

(procedure codes). However, the presentation focuses on

proven methodologies for evaluating current performance and

for establishing a workable system-wide plan for meeting these

requirements. The primary speaker will utilize a panel of

subject-matter-experts to discuss what has succeeded in

various health service settings – outpatient, inpatient,

professional specialty services – and what they do not

recommend or what has not been successful. The speaker will

also outline a specific plan that can be used for implementation

of verification of medically necessary diagnoses through

various points of service. The collaboration of clinical, patient

access and financial staff will also be highlighted.

By attending this session, you will learn:

1. Accurately identify the monthly dollar amount of lost

revenue due to not meeting medical necessity and/or

specific coverage requirements for all payers.

2. Understand how and why different strategies should be

employed depending on payer.

3. Evaluate current performance using ICD-10-CM diagnoses

and PCS (inpatient procedure codes) in meeting medical

necessity for high-cost outpatient services.

4. Discuss why meeting medical necessity for Medicare

outpatient Laboratory tests may not be as important as in

past years.

Making the Supply Chain Your Competitive Advantage

Andy Perry, Curvo Labs, Inc

Wednesday, 2:00 pm Palisades I*

By attending this session, you will learn:

1. Understand why old strategies like cost based

reimbursement, outsourced contracting, and transactional

management inhibit an organization’s competitiveness and

growth.

2. Understand a new way to think about the supply chain

and Saunders’s Information Systems Strategy Triangle.

3. Understand how to use Medicare market and cost report

current state.

Medicare Advantage: Increasing Enrollments Demand

Increased Provider Attention and RAC Audits

Linda Fotheringill, Washington & West

Thursday, 9:30 am Palisades G, H*

Rev Cycle/Finance Track Sponsored by Xtend Healthcare

Medicare Advantage (“MA”) lives in an odd regulatory space: It

looks, walks, and talks like familiar, state-administered

managed care, but it operates almost entirely under federal

law. CMS is charged with regulating MA plans, and the agency

has set clear expectations for how plans and providers should

treat patients, but there is far less guidance about how plans

should treat providers. These plans have denial and audit tools

much like Medicare’s, and many providers are experiencing an

increasing number of Medicare Advantage denials and

underpayments. We will also discuss the complexities of the

Two-Midnight Rule and its impact on Part C claims.

It is essential that providers understand how Medicare

Advantage’s rules shape 1) denials and appeals, and 2)

contractual relationships between providers and plans. In

addition, updates will be provided on the current state of

Medicare audits.

By attending this session, you will learn:

1. Understand How the financial structure of Medicare

Advantage can turn denied claims into a major revenue

source for plans.

2. Understand How Medicare policies—like the Two-Midnight

Rule and Rebilling—filter into Medicare Advantage and

receive updates on the current state of Medicare Audits.

3. Understand How joining a plan’s network impacts the

provider’s appeal rights.

4. Understand How providers can reduce Medicare

Advantage denials and maximize appeal successes.
