Thisyear,wearegoingbacktofinishwhatwestartedin2015,byraisingmoneyto support programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) plus the Arts for all students. Our goal is to continue building Concordia’s student-driven programs, and offer more speakers who will engage and challenge our learners within these initiatives. In addition, as tradition continues, some of the auction funds will be utilized by Concordia’s student-founded charity, Youth Empowering Progress (YEP), which is known for their outreach, both near and far.

Tonight is not only a celebration of the impressive international education being delivered at Concordia International School Shanghai, but it is a time for reflectionontheamazingpeoplethatmakethiscommunityoneothersstrivetoengage with. There is a true compassion in the people amongst us, and it has been evident throughout the entire planning and preparation process, climaxing with tonight’s gala. We celebrate together the 18th anniversary of the Concordia Community, and I am thankful that God continues to grant us His favor and mercyasweservetogethertoinfluenceour students toward excellence on their respective journeys, whether they are young and just beginning, or more developed teenagers exploring their next steps in life.

This annual event is successul because of the participation of the entire community.

• Dedicated parents chair the event and committees, solicit the donations, manageticketandrafflesales,turnanordinaryballroomintoanextraordinary escape, organize and package all of the donations and set-up/tear-down on the day.

• Committed faculty and staff go above and beyond the call of duty to provide internal donations of parties and exciting leadership opportunities for students. Other faculty members support students while they create artwork that families can enjoy in their homes. Some manage the contractual relationships and partnerships, design the collateral and manage the communications. Others, privately provide once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for community members. Many serve on the night.

• Talented students from across the grades create artistic treasures that can only be purchased once a year at the annual gala and auction. Other students volunteer on the night of the event, generously serving the guestsatcheck-in,facilitatingtheauctionprocess,sellingraffleticketsandassisting with check-out.

• Generous donors and partners provide items for the auction, sponsor the school and auction from their corporate and private funds; others provide in-kind services that enhance the charitable impact of the entire event.

• Finally, the guests who buy their tickets, dress in the spirit of the event, generously bid, support the project and enjoy the gala.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) most often refers to education or to careers. Critical thinking and problem solving are skills inherent in STEM and these are alive and well at Concordia. In 2015, we designated an entire auction to STEM as a way to celebrate the many wonderful things that were already happening at the school in this arena.

We asked faculty members across the school to create a wish list for STEM items to enhance the curriculum. As you can see from the STEM Update on the facing page, we were able to chip away at some of these items and our studentsarebenefittingnowandwillcontinuetobenefitwellintothefuture.But there is still more to do. Together, we can make this happen.

At Concordia, Fine Arts has been a focus of our academics since 1998. In 2005 all of the proceeds of the gala went to fund equipment for the Fine Arts program. Since that time, we have grown from a school of around 600 students to 1200 today. As you can see around campus, we have kept up the investment in Fine Arts while the school was growing. However, we believe that designating some auction funds to Fine Arts would enable us to supplement our program and support our Fine Arts faculty as they unleash the artistic talents of our students across the grades.

All of the proceeds of the Heart of Concordia section of the auction will be designated to renew and update the equipment that our student artists use to express their creativity.

Big BoardBig Board showcases items differently so they don't get lost in the crowd. While the display is unique, the bidding style is the same as Classic Silent Auction or Sealed Bid auction as indicated on the item.Classic Live Auction (English Auction)Also known as an open ascending price auction, this type of auction is arguably the most common form of auction in use today. Participants bid openly against one another, with each subsequent bid higher than the previous bid. The auction ends when no participant is willing to bid further, at which point the highest bidder pays their bid and wins the item.Classic Silent AuctionThis style of auction is a variant of an English auction where bids are written on a sheet of paper. At the predetermined end of the auction the highest listed bidder wins the item. • Upon arrival, please Register at the Reception Table. You will receive your Information Packet, which contains your Bid Number to use when you bid on an item. Note your Bid number is NOT the number on your entrance ticket.

• All items in this fundraising auction have been donated in whole or in part. All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds unless otherwise specified.

• All items in this auction are sold “as is” with no express or implied guarantees or warranties except those that may be supplied by the donor or manufacturer.

• We have attempted to describe and catalog all items accurately. No statement contained in this catalog or made orally during the auction shall be deemed a warranty or representation about the items’ authenticity, condition or value.

• Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations and redemption ofotherprizecertificatesmustbearrangedwiththedonorunlessotherwise noted. BIG ASK: GROW Project LaunchSince YEP was founded, the Concordia community has provided (more than) 342 high school scholarships, 71 middle school scholarships and 13 elementary school scholarships. These scholarship recipients now want to change the lives of other students, but they need our help. Proceeds from this item, will fund the launch of a new program reaching out to 'left-behind' children in Guangdong province. The GROW program trains university students who are previous recipients of CWEF high school scholarships and sends them out to serve as mentors for young rural primary students whose parents are living and working in the Pearl River Delta region. 150,000RMB is needed to launch this program. Three Concordia students started the Yunnan Education Project (YEP) in 2002 following a school service trip to work with the Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation (CWEF) in China’s Yunnan province. Since its inception, YEP has helped improve the lives of villagers in Yunnan through health education, sanitation projects, and clean water systems. Though YEP now stands for Youth Empowering Progress, it continues to offer support to CWEF, whose efforts have continued to grow and spread throughout China. There is even a school-wide YEP Club open to from Grade 2-12.
