Annual Meeting

From Our Board ChairWhile the pace of change may appear to be slow — our community is moving forward. At the Chamber, we are glad that economic development is no longer a dirty word, but instead the adopted strategy to ensure long-term community success.

To advance economic and community success, your Chamber identified three priorities for 2015:

• Advocating for improving infrastructure• Strengthening business ties to education — public

schools, community colleges and the University• Cheerleading innovation as a strategy to create new

jobs for our regionWhy all this concern about infrastructure, education and innovation? Because it is necessary to support economic growth and we need to have continued economic growth to increase the tax base so we can afford the community we want and aspire to be.

Our Chamber team invites you to team with us. As signs around town say, let us “choose our own future.” Let’s choose to be a vibrant community — not just a sleepy university town, not just a quiet retirement community, not just a great place to raise kids — but as a vibrant, innovative, thriving center in our region — the pro-business, left angle of the Triangle.

Robert Saunders, Brooks Pierce 2015 Chair, Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce

Resolve to stay involved!

“Our community is moving forward.”

Travel with Us! In 2015, our Chamber partnered with Central Holidays, a company with 40 years of experience to take a group of Chamber members, business and community leaders, and friends on a nine-day trip to Cuba.

Travelers visited four cities, including Havana. They enjoyed interactions with local Cuban people and built relationships with fellow travelers, while visiting a host of historic sites.

The Chamber plans to travel to Cuba again in 2016. Travel with us Oct. 4–10 — visit carolinachamber.org/travel for details and registration.

“The Chamber’s international travel program provided a wonderful opportunity to visit Cuba. It was an amazing, informative, almost life-changing, trip. I can’t even put into words what I learned and the experiences I had. The trip was full of such interesting and friendly people!”

Chapel Hill Young Professionals

The Chapel Hill Young Professionals (CHYP pronounced “chip”) is group of fun professionals under 40 that meets monthly for networking, professional development, and community service. CHYP is a great way to get plugged into the community through events, local businesses and people.

Events are monthly on the third Tuesday and take place in various Chamber member businesses. Pop-up joint events and community service projects are added to the calendar regularly and members receive event notifications via newsletter. Annual memberships are available and you don’t need to be a Chamber member to join CHYP!

In 2015 CHYPers cooked a meal at SECU Family House, dressed up Derby style and played bocce, mingled with candidates for elected offices, saw Buddy Holly the musical, learned about their leadership style through PeopleMapping, toured TOPO Distillery, put a roof on a Habitat home …just to name a few CHYP activities!

The Partnership for a Sustainable CommunityNow in its fifth year, the Chamber’s Partnership for a Sustainable Community continues to strengthen and support the Chamber’s economic and community development work.

As the Chamber’s charitable non-profit partner, the Partnership’s mission is to apply business leadership to solve community problems and create opportunities. With strong community and business support the Partnership accomplishes this mission by focusing on the four areas:

• Convening leaders• Educating and informing the community• Building organizational capacity; and • Researching and reporting on important community

information.

The Partnership enjoyed great success in 2015 including:

• Graduating the largest class of Leadership Fellows from the 10-week, Leadership Chapel Hill-Carrboro program,

• Researching and delivering the State of the Community Report to its largest audience,

• Recognizing our uniformed officers and community difference-makers at the annual Salute to Community Heroes, and

• Serving as the fiscal sponsor of several of our community’s nascent non-profits.

Funded by the Performance Golf Classic, the Community Bocce Derby and a host of community and corporate underwriters, the Partnership is poised for an exceptional 2016 that will feature the bi-annual Inter-City Visit and Leadership Conference.

First Day of Winter

Buying locally sustains the unique character and quality of life of your community. Beyond the economic impact of your spending, buying locally supports the businesses that reinvest in your community’s social and environmental well-being. Orange County businesses give generously to area churches and non-profits and enhance the social welfare of friends and neighbors.

Dollars spent at a local business are reinvested in your community’s employees through wages and reinvested in other organizations through the purchase of legal, accounting and other business

services. By purchasing from local businesses, you (and the goods you purchase) travel fewer miles, saving you time, gas money, and carbon emissions.

Remember, when you spend it here, you keep it here.
