January 2016: Auto Show Review

CES is the new NAIAS?Detroit officially became the “North AmericanInternational Auto Show” (NAIAS) about aquarter century ago. Raising its prominence inthe global auto show rankings, Detroit took thefront row along with the top European andAsian shows. Some automakers, however, don’t see Detroit as a “must-attend” event.

This year, Bentley, Jaguar-Land Rover, Miniand Tesla decided to not show its wares in theMotor City. Their claim was each brand isbetween major launches, but that’s not quitethe case. Bentley has the new Bentayga SUV,Jaguar has the F-Pace crossover, and Teslahas the new Model X, none of which haveappeared in Detroit. Could it be that Detroit islosing its luster? It’s possible, and there areseveral reasons why this could be the case.

First, there’s the weather. It may be a tiredargument, but the North American InternationalAuto Show is held two weeks into winter…inDetroit; a city not known for tropical weather inJanuary. Attendees have slogged through a footor two of snow while trying to park a few blocksaway. On the plus side, it’s warm enough insideto make you forget the adventure that awaits

after the show as patrons slide through theslush on Washington Boulevard hunting fortheir ride home.

Second, Detroit is no longer the center of theautomotive universe. One hundred years ago, more than half of the world’s motor vehicleswere produced by companies headquartered inand around Detroit. In recent years, the “Big 3”car companies have been renamed by somemedia as the “Detroit 3”, pointing out how GM,Ford, and the former Chrysler Corporation haveslipped from the globe’s 1-2-3 to 5-6-8 withmanufacturers in Japan, Germany, and SouthKorea well ahead of the former “Big 3”.

Third, there’s the competition. After the LosAngeles show moved to November, Detroit wasall alone at the beginning of the year. LA’simportance has grown over the years as moreand more companies look to SouthernCalifornia for its cultural importance. But thebigger issue is with the Consumer ElectronicsShow in Las Vegas the week before NAIAS,where the technology featured in modern carsare showcased to the electronics industry andthe world. Detroit’s taking a back seat.

North American Car of the Year

2016 Honda CivicAfter Honda’s mis-step with the 9th

generation model, the company stepped up

and created the all-new 10th generation and

the voters loved it. Beating out all-new

models from Chevrolet and Mazda, the Civic

returns with a coupe and sedan featuring the

first turbocharged engine in the model’s

history. Radical styling and new features

make the Civic this year’s winner.

Sporting three versions of Volvo’s new

four-cylinder engine (in turbo, supercharged-

turbo, and hybrid versions), the second-

generation full-sized crossover beat out

excellent restylings of Honda’s big CUV and

Nissan’s full-sized pickup. With three rows of

seating, the XC90 takes its Swedish roots to

heart and embraces it fully (leading off with

“Thor’s hammer” headlights).

General Motors

2016 Buick Avista concept• Purely a styling concept, the Avista gives many Buick fans hope that a new Riviera might be in the brand’s future

• Based on a rear-wheel drive platform that can only be assumed to be GM’s Alpha, the long and low coupe displays an athletic silhouette unlike any recent Buick, production or concept• Buick described the powerplant as a 400hp 3.0L V6 mated to an eight-

speed automatic transmission powering the rear wheels

• The Avista’s modern interior allows for seating for four and features a

fully digital instrument panel

• Instead of the airy subcompact box shown as the concept, the production version looks more like a small crossover with a much sportier design

• As promised, the all-electric Bolt will be priced around $37,500, before

incentives, and feature a 200-mile range

• GM claims an unprecedented $145/kWh LG Chem battery pack, beating

prices promised by even Tesla’s next-generation batteries

Honda

2016 Acura Precision Concept• One of the most distinctive introductions at the show, the Precision Concept shows the way for the new Acura design language as the brand tries to break from its traditionally conservative styling

• A new “Diamond Pentagon” grille is expected to become the trademark look for future sedans and coupes in the lineup

• The concept’s intricate exterior curves hide a modern and clean interior

with a nearly rectangular steering wheel and a significant lack of buttons

and switches supported by a wide infotainment screen

• Designed for purely stylistic reasons, the concept was shown without a

powertrain but is built around a long and wide platform with the front

wheels hinting at rear-wheel drive proportions

Honda

2017 Honda Ridgeline• Based on the latest Honda Pilot, the second-generation Ridgeline takes a more truck-like direction than the first generation

• Offered with all-wheel drive or, for the first time, front-wheel drive, the new pickup may appeal to a wider audience

• Dropping the earlier model’s sail panels around the bed, the 2017

Ridgeline features a cargo box which looks more like a traditional pickup

although the bed is not separated from the cabin; the tailgate both lowers

and swings to the side and reveals the in-floor lockable storage

• Power comes from the Pilot’s 280hp 3.5L V6 engine pushed through a 6-

speed automatic transaxle and available with Honda’s i-VTM4 all-wheel

drive

• Payload capacity of around 1,600lbs has been promised making it

2016 Kia Telluride concept• Based on the mid-sized Sorento, the Telluride hints at a larger production crossover to replace the ill-fated Borrego

• Riding on a wheelbase nearly a foot longer than the Sorento, the Telluride’s big features hide the fact that it’s a very large (9.5 inches longer than the 7-passenger Sorento) sport utility

• The concept’s modern interior sports four bucket seats as well as a fold

away third row

• Hybrid power mating a 130hp electric motor and the 270hp 3.5L V6

engine powers all four wheels but returns a claimed 30 mpg

integrated skid plate up front, a unique grille, glossy fender flares, LED

headlights and driving lights, and a roof-mounted spoiler

• Black cloth and leather interior sports orange trim with an aluminum-

spoked steering wheel and additional gauges

• Production is doubtful, but the Ford F150 Raptor is the obvious target

Toyota

2016 Lexus LF-FC concept• Just a styling concept, LF-FC points toward the next design direction for the Lexus brand and, more specifically, the next generation LS sedan

• Styled in the popular “4-door coupe” theme with its fast sloping rear windshield, LF-FC stretches nearly 209 inches long and 78.7 inches wide while standing just 55.6 inches high

• A rear-mounted fuel cell stack powers the rear wheels as well as front in-

wheel motors creating a zero emission all-wheel drive driveline

• Interior controls are changed with hand gestures “without the need to

touch a panel or controls”

• Of course the concept has autonomous technology to anticipate traffic

and keep the car relatively accident-free
