ARIA DI CHIESA: PIETA SIGNORE . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Stradella/ tr . Fraschillo Aria di Chiesa: Pieta Signore is a church aria set to music by Alessandro Stradella . Like many arias intended for performance in a church setting, the lyrics deal with repentance and forgiveness .

The Italian lyrics translate to:Have mercy, Lord, on me in my remorse!Lord, have mercy, if my prayer rises to you;do not chastise me in your severity, less harshly, always mercifully, look down on me .Never let me be condemned to hell,in the eternal fire by your severity.

- Program Note by Nikk Pilato

CARMINA BURANA (1937/1967) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Orff (arr . Krance) Orff derived the inspiration and texts for his score from a 13th - century anthology of songs and poems written in medieval Latin, German and French by the “goliards” — the vagrant scholars, vagabond poets and wandering monks of seven hundred years ago. The original manuscript collection was rediscovered in the old monastery, Benediktbeuern, in the Bavarian Alps, by Johan Andreas Schmeller who published it in 1847 under the name Carmina Burana (Songs of Beuern). Containing approximately two hundred songs and poems — both sacred and secular — the manuscript ranged in style and content from earthly simplicity to sophisticated symbolism and mysticism, from devotional religious contemplation to unabashed, almost cynical worldliness. The origin of the poems — some of which were definitely intended for singing — is obscure. However, since the goliards tempered their Christianity with secular beliefs, the subjects with which the poems deal are as evident today as they were when the poems were written. They are frank avowals of the earthly pleasures: eating, drinking, gambling, love - making; the beauty of life and springtime; the irony and cruelty of fortune (then referred to as “Empress of the World,” the ancestor of our own “Lady Luck”). In arranging Carmina Burana for concert band, I have attempted to retain the spirit, feeling and overall character of the original score, at the same time modifying its length to a duration suitable for programming purposes. The work begins and ends depicting the crushing anguish of the victims of fortune’s ruthless wheel (O Fortuna; Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi); the remaining sections are devoted to the joys of spring and nature, the pleasures of the tavern and the gaming table, the delights of love, the irony of Fate.

Colas Breugnon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dmitri Kabelevsky How perfect to perform the work of Russian composer Dmitri Kabalevsky (1904 - 1987) at a conference of music teachers! Kabalevsky was known for his dedication to the field: he was elected to be the head of the Commission of Musical Esthetic Education of Children in the USSR in 1962 and he was awarded the honorary presidency of the International Society of Music Education. These days we know him most for his energetic and tuneful pieces, the most famous of which are his concertos for violin and cello, the Comedian’s Suite, and the piece you hear today, the overture to his 1937 opera, Colas Breugnon. His traditional compositional techniques are obvious compared to other composers around the world at the time, but as a Soviet composer, his ability to adopt a more daring style would have had limits. Symphony No . 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Howard Hansen Nebraskans should be very proud of one of its most famous native sons. Howard Hanson (1896 - 1981), born to Swedish immigrants in Wahoo, left Nebraska to study composition in New York and at Northwestern University in Illinois, where he earned a degree in 1916. Five years later, he won the American Academy’s Rome Prize, a three - year fellowship to study in Rome. When he returned to the US, he was appointed to be the director of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, a position he held for 40 years. During his tenure, Eastman rose from relative obscurity to the position it holds today as one of the most respected music schools in the world. While there he championed of music of many American composers, and as for his own works, he is most known for his seven symphonies, especially No. 2 (nicknamed “Romantic”), and No. 4, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944. Symphony No. 2 was commissioned by Serge Koussevitsky for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony in 1930.
