TheGreat Lakes Steelpan Festivalwas created in order to fill avoid thatwaspresent in the steelpancommunity.Asother festivalswere researched, itwasdiscovered that this voidwasnot exclusiveto the great lakes area. In fact, this voidwaspresent throughout theworld. The void being referenced is the lack of educationalopportunities for young steelpan enthusiasts to learn about theinstrument as well as improve their playing abilities.

Many of the other existing festivals are focused on theperformance and competitive side of being in a steelband.Although there aremany festivals that offer some sort of educationas well, education has been secondary to providing a venue forperforming and competing.

TheGreat Lakes Steelpan Festival is focused on creating a non-competitive atmosphere for bands to explore the incredibleversatility of the instrument without fear of being penalized forbeing different. Along with this unique opportunity, GLSF is alsoconcerned about educating tomorrow’s playerswith the history ofthe instrument.

The steelpan is a young instrument and has a very uniquehistory. Unlike nearly any other instrument, there are stillpeople alive today who were around at the birth of thisinstrument. Many people who are involved with this instrumentare unaware of it’s history, or the people who helped make it.The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is providing the opportunityfor pan enthusiasts to truly experience this history by bringingin guest artists that have devoted their lives to the study of theinstrument both musically and historically.

About the Festival:

Due to the support from the businesses and individuals listed inthis program, this fourth annual event was able to come togethersmoothly. Please show you appreciate their support of the steelpanby supporting them or even just thanking them. In today’s world, the arts are receiving less and less funding, and events like this arenot possible without us all working together. This festival came froma conversation between Matt Potts and Denette Lynch about a voidin the current steelpan festival realm. That simple conversation iswhat lead us to this point today, and it could not have been donewithout the help from a lot of individuals and businesses. Thesupport has continued to grow and has resulted in GLSF growingbigger every year! This growth helped lead to the creation of acharitable organization for music education, Culture, Arts andMusic. Contact us today to find out how you can help make adifference by helping support diversity within our communitythrough music education.

Please help make a difference in cultural education by supporting Culture, Arts&Music. Culture, Arts &Music (or CAM for short) is a 501(c)3 organization basedin Woodstock that is helping bring forward different cultures within theChicagoland area. In addition to the Great Lakes Steelpan Festival, CAM alsoprovides weekly steelpan classes and private music lessons for many differentinstruments. CAM also hosts bi-weekly drum circles, latin dance classes, latindance socials, paint nights andmore! Contact Matt Potts for more information [email protected].

The Guest Artists:Dr. Elliott 'Ellie' Mannette -

In 1946, as a youth in Trinidad, Mannette crafted the first musicalinstrument from a 55 gallon container and revolutionized the art form.Mannette is also credited with being largely responsible for developing manyof the instrument’s innovations and seven of the orchestra's 10 voices.

After moving to New York City in 1967, Mannette has been at the fore-front of the growth of the steel band movement in the United States. Inrecognition of his significant contribution to this thriving art form, Mannettereceived the 1999 NEA National Heritage Fellowship Award, the highesthonor for the traditional arts given in the United States. In November 2000,and after a 33 year absence, Mannette was given an Honorary Doctorate fromthe University of the West Indies - and received a “Hero’s Welcome” uponhis return home to Trinidad.

During the late 60’s, there were only a few steelband programs scatteredamong some of the larger cities on the East Coast. However, as the yearsprogressed, Mannette traveled extensively building, tuning, and promotingthe art form. As a result, successful steelband programs can be found fromNew York to Washington State and the Dakotas to Texas.

Regarded as a consummate master craftsman, Mannette revolutionizedthe tuning process early in the instrument's development (1941) by reversingthe method of sinking (from convex to concave), and would go on tointroduce a more scientific approach to the tuning process.

In partnership with WVU since 1992, Mannette directed a unique andcomprehensive apprenticeship program (known as the University TuningProject). With the help of WVU Research Corporation, that venture turnedinto a for profit business known as Mannette Steel Drums Ltd, dedicated toproviding the world with master craftsmen, instruments, and services.Mannette Steel Drums became the first 'technology transfer' company in May2000 for WVU's Research Corporation.

Gary Gibson is a Seattle-based musician with a 40+ yearhistory in steelpan. Recognized internationally as an influentialcomposer and performer of progressive music for the steelpanand steel band, Gibson blends his knowledge of classical andjazz music with his passion for traditional Caribbean rhythmsand forms. He has released five critically acclaimed albums oforiginal steelpan music to date (with a sixth coming soon), andis active as a clinician/performer with collegiate and highschool steel bands across the United States.

In addition to being a winner of Trinidad's 2004"Panorama National Steelband Championship" (as a memberof the Exodus Steel Orchestra), Gibson also took first prize intwo of three categories in the 2009 "Symphony and Steel"composition contest, which combined the symphony orchestrawith small steel pan ensemble (performed by Potts & Panswith MCYO). This is Gary's third time here at GLSF and willsurely not be his last either! Gary composed both mass bandpieces specifically for the festival.

Gregory Boyd -"Gregory Boyd is an amazing musician. His music is fresh,he is a great singer and a next level steel drum artist. And he

brings the Funk!!! Big Time!!"

Ida Nielsen -Bassist- PRINCE 3rd Eye Girl

Whether performing with Ashish Khan, the world'sforemost Sarod Master, opening for Bob Dylan, performing atNew York's Lincoln Center or electrifying his Steelpans,Gregory Boyd has always had one mission; to do things a littledifferently, a little off the beaten path. When Boyd decided tojoin the US Navy and perform in the US Navy Steel DrumBand, this ethic was truly put to the test. Deciding that thenormal usage of performing Caribbean steelpans was notenough, Boyd set out to recreate the instrument and use it in asmany different ways he possibly could, all the while singingand performing as many different musical styles as possible inorder to gain a rich understanding of what the instrument canand will do.

Gregory Boyd now resides in Denmark after living in NewOrleans, Louisiana for many years. He is a true child ofAmerican music being a distant relative to Blues LegendMuddy Waters, born in the Milwaukee area and raised for atime in Detroit. Gregory Boyd’s music can be described asrefreshing, exciting, funky and thought provoking.

Potts & Pans -Potts & Pans Steelband is based out of Woodstock, IL and

is the vision of Matt Potts. Upon graduating from college, Mattquickly realized there was a severe lack of awareness withinthe general public regarding this instrument. Not willing to sitback and allow this instrument to be overlooked by hiscommunity, Matt decided to purchase enough pans to start asteelband. Matt soon realized he would have to be self-sufficient, so along with his playing, managing, and arrangingduties, Matt taught himself how to tune and is currentlydeveloping his building skills.

Potts & Pans, Inc. NFP is a Not-For-Profit organization setup to help foster the growth of the steelpan within theChicagoland area. In addition to performing at various events, they also are a resident artist with Culture, Arts & Music andprovide instructional classes for all ages.

The current core members of Potts & Pans consist ofChristina Guerrero, Anthony Jay Houston, Emily Rojas, DanBretz and Matt Potts. The group has provided multipleeducational concerts and workshops throughout the greatlakes region, has been a guest artist at the 2012 InternationalSteelpan Festival in Montreal Canada and won the ChicagoMusic Award for "Best Calypso/Soca Entertainer." The grouphas worked with artists such as Glen McClure, DarrenShepard, Encore Youth Choir, McHenry County YouthOrchestra, Salah Wilson and more. The group has gainedattention throughout the country for their playing ability, educational prowess and adaptability.
